Welcome to the Earning a Living quest line! Are you ready to join the working world? Be sure to read your particular profession's quest in its entirety, as there are slight differences between each one. Also, don't forget this important information:

  • You may only have one main profession at a time. Your choices are: blacksmith, tailor, artisan, alchemist, cook, performer, and appraiser. Should you decide to change professions, you will need to complete the appropriate quest.  This will reset your main profession experience to zero.
  • You may only have one secondary profession at a time. Your choices are: foraging and fishing. Again, changing this profession requires taking the other quest, and will reset your secondary profession experience to zero.
  • To clarify, you may have one main profession and one secondary profession at the same time. For example, you might have blacksmithing and fishing.
  • If two players are interested in completing the quest together, and both acquiring the same profession, that is allowed. However, both players must complete their own set of requirements. For example, two players attempting to become appraisers must each collect and identify three of their own items. One individual may not help their companion in any way (mechanically - feel free to roleplay whatever you'd like).
  • An escort is allowed for roleplay purposes (for example, someone who already has a profession, or does not want one). However, that person cannot assist with completing the quest requirements.
  • Remember, each player may only receive one Demonic Shard or one Gleaming Scale. If you have already collected one, you may not switch professions to collect the other. These items are functionally equivalent, so you are not disadvantaging yourself by taking one over the other.
  • Note that some thresholds for crafting/identifying items or gathering mats may be unique for the Earning a Living quest. Before you craft, identify, or search for mats outside of the quest, double check the standard values.
  • Players will not gain profession EXP during the Earning a Living quest, as it must be completed before you unlock the selected profession.
  • Once your thread has been closed, you may create a shop in the Merchants and Shops subforum.

Quest Rewards:

  • 300 Experience Points
  • <<Blacksmith>> Profession

  • Roleplay the following:
    • Talking to Callum.
    • Gathering materials and bringing them back.
    • Crafting the item with Callum's guidance.
  • Gather five materials through any standard means (gathering, fishing, combat). Lower level players are encouraged to avoid combat.
  • Craft an item using Callum's forge.

Summary:
As you enter the smoke-filled forge, the handsome man at the anvil offers you only a quick glance. "Can I help you with something?" he asks. When you explain that you are interested in becoming a blacksmith, he gives a quick laugh. "I'm only just barely a blacksmith myself, having taken over after my father retired last month. But yes, I suppose I could pass on some of that knowledge." Finally pausing from his rhythmic hammering, Callum glances around the cluttered workspace. "I'm afraid I can't spare any of our stock though, as we're already running out. If you can bring me something to work with, I'll teach you what I know."

Outline:

Crafting an Item
Make a standard Crafting Roll. Specify the item type in the Roll Purpose (must be a Tier 1 item craftable by a blacksmith). Use the Crafting Die Chart for a Rank 1 Blacksmith:

When you explain that you are interested in learning more about gathering, Giovanna's emerald eyes widen. "Most simply expect me to forage their materials for them, but few truly care about the process itself. You surprise me." As you approach the homey fishing shack, perched precariously over the edge of the lake, a figure strides up from the water's edge. He lifts a hand in greeting, and when he finally closes the distance, looks you up and down appreciatively. "Anthony Gill, at your service," he announces, executing a quick bow. "Let me guess, you were looking for someone old, with a long white beard, and a pipe?" Waggling his eyebrows, the man adds, "Sorry to disappoint. Now, what can I do for you?" When you explain that you're interested in learning more about fishing, Anthony flashes that million-watt smile. "I am honored you would come to me for help. Since we're friends, I'll let you in on a little secret." Reaching into his pocket, Anthony draws out a small tin, then offers it to you. "This is a special bait, because a local priest prays over it in a top-secret ceremony.  I'm the only one in the world who has it, so don't bother looking for it anywhere else. If you use it, you'll catch the rare any mysterious Rainbow Fish, which you can harvest for Gleaming Scales. Catch the fish, bring me a scale, and you'll know all there is to know about fishing."

You know you're always welcome."

Congratulations!
