red and white and gold. she'd chosen them explicitly for the fortune it would bring, because if iris was right about her hunches, she would need it in incredible amounts. she couldn't afford it otherwise.
first floor, town of beginnings, north-western 
quarter of the city, somewhere along the main 
road. a prime position for a new store to open 
up, after the plot had been squatted on for too 
long, far too long.

what's eye catching about the front was its use 
of crimson, silver and gold, boasting of luxury 
even to the most indifferent of individuals. at 
its best, it manages item identifications for a 
few private individual (for the time being, of 
course). at its worst, it takes out the garbage 
collected from the masses, reaping what col 
cardinal has the favour of offering them for the 
day.

while it is closed, a scarlet thread blocks 
off its exits from interested patrons.

glass stairs first greet any customer looking for its merchant's services. each step's reflection captures the marbled flooring, with ripples of gold interlaced through them. a brilliantly intricate chandelier made with an artisan's touch looms over the newcomer, to flood them with a zest of awe.

down at the heart of the room is but a white table, with a comfortable office chair. it might as well be a throne, however, with how it sits squared at the center of the pristine space. two cushioned lounge benches and a low glass coffee table sit between the end of the steps and the edge of the merchant's table. two tiny square tables are in parallel by the benches' sides -- a bowl of tchotchkes and sweets on one's surface, a stock of different tea leaves in a white case on the other.

off to the sides, a number of bookshelves, gold plants and crystal trees decorate the room's interior. side rooms frame the office on the left and right, but they're barred off from entry to the average visitor. black sliding doors mark their frames.

headed by one <iris> as the front of the store, it is also manned by two significant figures of the realm of expedition; <jean> and <masa>. they keep watch over the store while <iris> is resting or away from business, but often also laze around in the room's comfort, making good use of their expended col on <iris>' behalf.

   HISTORY

The Fontenots had given birth to a pair of twins.

Bianca was the younger of the two, and while her sister Estienne was blessed with determination and ferocity, she picked up her house’s virtues, following in her family’s intended steps for their youth. When her sister was out in the gardens, picking at insects to spike her interest, Bianca was indoors, reading books and learning how to play music. Her aptitude for learning and her reservation at a young age made her the favourite of the two in their household. This brought her resentment from her elder.

So they drifted, as siblings usually did. Being the more responsible sister, she was held to higher standards, expected to rope in Estienne into the family’s ways. Struggling with acing school work, playing music and forming bonds with someone who wouldn’t want to look at her half the time; that was a nightmare that Bianca lived through. Her focus on her burdens caused her to lose friendships in times of their dire needs, unable to carry her companions’ baggage on top of her own.

The one connection both twins held onto was music -- Bianca would play an instrument of her choosing, and Estienne would sing. It was the only way they would bond, the latter refusing to do anything else otherwise. Soon, the songs they produced together was the only thing the two were known for. While it bothered her none, her sister detested the notoriety it brought her. Eventually, their jam sessions together were done in secret, Bianca even taking the extra step to reducing her tools to a machine’s capability.

When they graduated, Bianca found herself specializing in audio, working as a foley for a small local company. The twins drifted apart due to their busy schedules, but by now, Bianca was the more persistent of the two in trying to keep the siblings bond together. At some point, Estienne gave in with a surprise -- taking the opportunity to establish another hobby between them.

A knock on the door. Estienne showed up at her apartment. In her bag, she'd brought over two nerve gears, and two copies of the death game for both of them to try out.

   VIRTUES, FLAWS

Open. Bianca is no stranger to making acquaintances out of strangers. She’s ready to divulge and share information about herself to others at a moment’s notice. She does her best to hold no secrets or mysteries about herself, and does her best to make sure others feel comfortable around her.

Temperance. A Fontenot is often easily unswayed by incentives. She keeps her desires in check, and hence maintains a clear head. Bianca believes that distance, be it on an emotional or physical level, is a key to her moderation techniques.

Diligence. The woman’s work is thorough. A meticulous actor, she does her best to perform well at her job by ensuring the finer details are accounted for. She never wants to let anyone judge her for a poor performance.

Workaholism. There’s one thing the woman will sacrifice herself towards, over and over again, and it’s work. She prides herself (inwardly, she would never tell anyone this) on her efficiency and effectiveness. Often, if one comes looking for her when she isn’t responding, it would be due to having passed out from stress or exhaustion.

Distant. One can get to know Bianca rather well through her expulsion of personal information, but when it comes to emotions, the woman is hard to read. The aura that surrounds her almost feels airy at times, due to her thoughts being hard to grasp. Through this, it’s also not very likely for the Fontenot to make any number of true friends.

Direct. Her effectiveness and dissociation from feelings cause her words to come through sharp and edged. Half the time it is due to being as straightforward as possible, to make sure her meaning gets through clearly. The other half is simply a lack of tact and social awareness, causing her sentiments to come across rigid and cold.

BACKGROUND

Remaining immobile for extended periods of time was something   NIGHT  wasn't unfamiliar with.

It's just... this time felt different. A span of years as opposed to the occasional weekend. No resistance from her body to still. No will from her mind to move.

Her earliest memory in the real world was living with her mother. Estranged father, that sent gifts and money to the family as they needed it. And hiding away from the world, living through it via brightly-lit screens from the comforts of her own bed.

Now there was just a lit window, and the most interesting thing that passed it was a bird or two through the Town of Beginnings.

 

School was out. If she were to have gained repute there over the early obtainment of the NerveGear amongst her peers, it would now be looked upon with pity, she bet. 

Being alone since Day One wasn't fun.

 

...

 

In spite of it all, NIGHT spurned the inn room she locked herself within one day.

VIRTUES :: FLAWS

+ level-headed

Rarely do her emotions sway her from one action or another — or it seems that way to others on the surface. She's quiet in battle, focus honed in on the party's objective, void of distractions and conversation to ensure a maximized chance of success. And that calm and cool facade appears maintained in her daily strides, pacing through the streets of Aincrad.

+ prepared

If it's hard to catch the woman unaware, that caution is not without great effort on part of the player. From the variety of consumables to the literal armory in lieu of her storage space, she ensures a variety of situational components are ready at her disposal. And practice makes perfect; it's just that NIGHT never shows the stitchings behind her frame intentionally.

+ open-minded

Progressive views? Maybe so. NIGHT stemmed from a traditional background, and may struggle to find her placement on controversial issues, but she's no stranger to giving other parties the benefit of the doubt.

+ deliberate

Methodical inner workings. Speech with no extra fluff. What you see from NIGHT is what often what you'd get, like an open book, like she reads like an open book. It's all within her field of rationale, chaotic or otherwise.

– private

The only way to keep a secret is not to tell someone about it, for everybody talks. She's liken to keep everything awful that's happened to her locked away within herself. That, and setting boundaries is a healthy thing. Reader discretion is advised.

– squeamish

Look at a picture of a forest. Barring any cute and cuddly creatures, NIGHT has a distaste for every aspect within that image. No bugs, liquids, gore, horror; not even plants or trees without, at least, some gloves.

– melancholic

Between the near constant scowl on NIGHT's image and the loner reputation the woman puts up, it's no surprise if other players find themselves uncomfortable around her. That is to say, she feels just as uneasy with her own self, pooled in a state of unrest even in the safety of her home. The woman is her own worst critic, which leads to periods of inaction, quick tempers, and silence, especially with people she finds herself closest with.

– reckless

Appearing careful is part of her image. Embodying the trait itself is not. NIGHT is only human, prone to error, but what emphasizes these is the agenda to do things right and to do them fast — emphasis on speed rather than on quality to get the task over and done with as soon as possible.

This odachi came in a dark wooden case alongside its replica, only scarcely bordered by a sheet of glass above it. A dark steel blade laced with red and white etchings, the sword is slightly curved around its length, with a marking of a crescent moon near near its guard. It's incredibly ornate, making it difficult to wield with practicality.

BACKGROUND

Seiko's life was completely ordinary by any Japanese context. An only child raised in a warm and loving household, Seiko was closer to her mother than her usually-absent father. Come middle school, she was evaluated to be quite bright for her age, ranking highly amongst her peers, though stood a chance to improve according to the faculty supporting her. As a break from her studies, young Seiko was interested in practicing Kendo, before waning off of the sport and mellowing out once she got to high school. The educational pressures of her more prestigious educational institution demanded that she turn to something that would actually relax her than stir her up during her off time from her studies, so it was Home Ec. for one year, before Gardening the next and onwards.

Seiko wouldn't say she was particularly close to her parents, though she wanted to be, knowing her role and place in society. Given the need for both parties to reciprocate, the young Ueda definitely had her hand extended to her parents', but rarely was able to receive their own in return. Such was life in a high-intensity living environment, on the outskirts of Tokyo, and Seiko took to entertaining herself at the local shops around city center with the arcades offering different machines.

The games added up to a habit; not bad, not good. And, for the first time, past her college entrance exams and when her studies started to slow down during her time in university, she wanted to go back to that all consuming, energetic environment of a fast-paced, action-packed... game.

Seiko bought Sword Art Online, thinking it was a good in between of the two aspects in her life. Was lucky enough to have subverted most of the queue fuss, somehow. Put on the headset on the first day of game launch.

Had never been able to take it off ever since.

Seiko's progress in life was by trying to alter herself to address the critiques of others. She adjusts easily, so long as she thinks there is valid reason behind the claim. If given the opportunity, she looks for new ways to better herself and others.

Everyone has different expectations for each other. Seiko's learned to adapt to each of them. By separating different aspects of her life from each other, she can ensure she remains in control of herself, and her outcomes.
STRATEGIC
Seiko's focus on trying to meet others' expectations requires her to think carefully to understand how to do so. Whether she addresses them directly or indirectly so is up to her to determine, and while both are completely in her control, most would be better subverted than confronted. Seiko isn't lazy or a slacker; she just prefers to exercise her smarts to conserve her energies for what really matters, what challenges her most.
TUNNEL-VISIONED
Seiko is simple and straightforward. Hence, so would her thoughts be as linear -- and cutthroat. By having a single point of focus, Seiko can ensure a lack of distraction; efficiency at all costs.
AMICABLE
There's no sense in not getting along with others. Either through personal temperament or societal upbringing, Seiko is capable in demonstrating courtesy in front of others. She does her best to act as a neutral party -- sometimes on purpose, others on accident -- because that's the best position to be in for the best results with everybody else.
RISK MONGER
Seiko has been asking this question perpetually, even from her days in the outside world: is she an expendable human being, or not? At the crossroads of smarts and hearts, something tugs at the strings that make up herself. Each high stakes encounter is but an impersonal test to a everlasting theorem.

(in a different world, sylvester would've been living in the dumps from a gambling addiction; he swears he could see it in his mind's eye.)

in this one, life was swell, being born with a silver spoon in his mouth. living in a countryside manor and renting out apartments in the city when school was in season, the young beaumont practically lived rich and carefree among likeminded peers. of a large family, he lived well with his older siblings. falling in line with a middling sister, his days were usually relaxing, playing an accompanying body to her under fair weather, napping, as she stayed quiet and painted.

then came college, and with it his first go at a modelling gig. he wasn't one to see much success, except in the fine arts, where his stature, genes and penchant for staying still for hours on end allowed his peers to glimpse a better idea of the human anatomy. aimless, he majored in linguistics, and it was only through familial connections that he found himself bouncing through various jobs in the transport sector.

so the real question is how he ended up in sword art online. as part of his elder siblings' efforts in keeping the family connected, there were various motions, one of them was through mmo's. that fell through for most, but sylvester kept it up as a side hobby, especially when it helped him get closer with a few preferred contacts, one of which he was supposed to meet within the game.

cue the administrator, then, who informed him that his late date would not be arriving at all.

when put to a goal, it is difficult to sway sylvester from it, at least in spirit. his desire to help others towards a few certain causes he believes in allows him to be a reliable companion to his allies. he also has a penchant for being the guide and support of small groups, if he's capable of it.
indulgent
sylvester is first and foremost a thrill seeker, when he can muster the energy to find something to match his standard for excitement. when he cannot, he turns instead to all other things quality in life; food, drink and material comforts. it's enough to drive him to preserve what he has on most days, despite his capability of weathering the bare minimum.
placid
sylvester's temperament is like a cat curling up under a window on a summer's day, or the still surface of a lake. he is difficult to upset or cause emote – and if he is, he is quick to recover from them. very little, including dangerously eminent risks, is capable of fazing him.
passive
the young beaumont can be ambitious, but he needs to be ferried around between goals. it isn't so much that he is lacking in conviction. the irony lies within the fact that he prefers to watch others complete their work than actually getting his own tasks done. call it laziness, but being idle has its own merits to the man, too.
loyal
what the beaumont takes into consideration first is his friends. though he doesn't consider a lot of acquaintances close, he does appreciate what they've done for him in the past, and often extends his help graciously with this regard. though he often is unable to help much, the man does what he can to repay his debts.
impersonal
given that all things are like water off a duck's back, it is difficult to say if one's presence about the man is of value or entertainment. he carries a generally upbeat demeanor for all he encounters. it's easy to get close to sylvester, but understanding where one truly lies in proximity to him socially is a challenge in itself.

On Maxwell's fifth birthday, his father left home.

Maxwell was too young to remember how the household reacted to this news. Or perhaps he'd decided it was one of the things of life not worth remembering. Under the care of his only mother alongside both of his parents' extended family, his journey through teenhood was not rife with struggle nor friction. At some point, he'd wondered if it was because his mother had put on the bravest front from that day onwards; at other times, he'd chalked it up to his older brother, Emmett, and his generous care and concern for Maxwell's wellbeing. Emmett always did seem to act his best as both a kindly parental figure and a best friend. While growing up, the two brothers were almost inseperable.

Things would remain at peace for a long time. Then came along the Nerve Gear and his brother's waning presence in his life; the man, having reached adulthood, proceeded to continue supporting the family, returning the sentiment on his mother's behalf. It was out of joviality that his brother accepted Maxwell's request for a shared past time during their hours off.

Now Demian isn't sure if he has a mother any more. All he does is cling onto the one remaining hope, the only family he has left in the site of a tragedy of imprisonment.

Hardworking
Out by the front porch of his house is a little garden. It produces small vegetables come spring and summer. It isn't much,Emmett had told him, and Maxwell knew this by the food placed on his dinner on those nights from his harvest. But the work is good discipline, and mom would be proud of you for picking up a hobby that serves us well.

Encouraging 
He learned quickly how he should care for his crops. Sometimes, when his brother wasn't home, he would shuffle around his tiny field, making sure the plants were want for naught. And he shared with them his thoughts, his daily schedule and the pride he held for the little troopers sticking out most of the year under the ground.

Perseverance
He'd cried when the first seed he ever planted remained dormant for a good month, only noting its indifference to the world once his brother had pointed out its slow progress to him. Emmett smiled at his tears -- either it had been Maxwell's naivety that earned him a laugh, or a kind regard to the encouraging behaviour he'd seen the boy usher on his plant in the days before. And still he'd wanted to do right by his crop. Emmett guided him how to.

Stubborn
Weeds, Emmett had told him, would steal the nutrients from the soil, and sometimes release chemicals to attack your plants. Though it was a simple warning, he hadn't expected it to take a toll on Maxwell, how the kid snuck out of his bedroom come midnight just to watch over his plants in the dark. The boy wouldn't budge, not an inch for the next hour or so; by then, Emmett thought it better to forge a white lie for the kid, so that the both of them could soundly rest in their beds for the night.

Impressionable
There were a few months that went by in high school that Maxwell wasn't around his beloved field. It was his friends, Emmett realized after questioning him at the dinner table, that would drag him out late into the night week after week. Only after much trial was he able to convince the young boy to have the courage set his own boundaries -- especially so for the people that he liked spending time with. He'd returned to his garden soon after that, to Maxwell's discrete and silent pleasure.

Repressive
Do you remember the week when I was fighting with mom every night? Emmett asked on occasion, and Maxwell had always answered in the negative. But on those days, the boy had spent the entire night wide awake, listening attentively to their conversation. By the morning light, he would have forgotten it completely, imagining things were fine between his family.
