An eternal optimist type who finds the best in any situation, even when it could mean certain death. He was heavily inspired in his life by the dashing Indiana Jones from a young age, and while the real world was never that fun type of archaeological adventure, he still kept his imagination even to this day. His classes were always very mixed, especially for those that went on site, because you'd get a pretty even split of kids that were really tired of him being so happy to be out sweating in the sun or sweltering in the forest digging through the dirt, and the other half who were just as happy to match his enthusiasm and jump in with both feet. Bruin likes to think himself a good teacher, and has a fairly decent rate of graduates from his program, so his upper management tends to agree. Even those who tend to grate against his happy go lucky personality always seem to still listen to him and absorb his wisdom, so Bruin never has any reason to chastise them for their lack of excitement. At the end of the day, Bruin is who he is, and the students learning is the goal. Being inspired by such a roguish, adventurous type, and often ready to take the bull by the horns, Bruin can often be a little too reckless. The best example of this was when once spent a month stuck and lost in an underground cave because he jumped without thinking and didn't let his team tie a rope to him to bring him back. He was addled and pretty sick by the time he made his way out, but his optimisim hadn't diminished in the slightest. Though he does at least like to learn to say he learned from the experience, not that anyone has given him the chance to prove it for fear of losing him again. Overall, anyone who knows Bruin would call him a kind soul with a penchant for getting himself in a little too over his head, but not very many people just outright don't like him. He has had a few brushes with other professors who are jealous of his success, but Bruin always likes to tell his students that if someone is spending all their time worrying about you, then they're not worried about the hole they're about to fall into. Not that this has stopped Bruin from falling into holes despite worrying about himself, in any case. HISTORY Spoiler An archaeologist by trade in the real world, Bruin has always loved exploring new worlds and histories. Bruin set out to become an archaeologist at an early age, spending much of his life dedicated to unearthing the past from his early 20's. Now a university professor in the United States, he passes along his passion to the next generation. His specialty is in working with past civilizations, with his favorite period being that of the Medieval era in Europe. Though recently he had taken interest in the archaeology of Japanese civilzations as Japan opened up to the idea of allowing other countries to assist in digs, and found himself on one such dig with his university students for a long term exchange program between the two countries. Bruin also reveled in the idea of being in Japan because of the video game culture. It was no secret that he was an avid gamer, having played MMOs basically since their conception, and spending much of his free time, when not out camping at dig sites, hooked up to the internet playing whatever the latest craze was. It would come as no surprise then that the man would find his way to obtaining a copy of Sword Art Online. He had preordered a copy from the US as soon as it had been announced, and had secretly been hoping that this exchange program would work in favor of him being in Japan to play the game on release. He was certainly in luck. Of course, as we all know now, not everything was roses and sunshine, and poor Bruin found himself trapped in the world of Sword Art Online along with the other 10,000 players who had initially joined the game. Initially Bruin was devastated, as would be expected. But he took solace in the idea that as long as he could survive he could explore an entirely new world, not just behind a computer screen, but as if he was excavating in the real world. He was sad he wouldn't be able to spend the rest of the exchange program with his students and knew they would be worried, but there was little he could do about that now, so he set out. VIRTUES Spoiler Eternal Optimist It is almost impossible for Bruin to see the bad in any situation. There is a silver lining to every cloud, and even when facing certain death he will do it with a smile. He believes with all his heart that there is good in everyone and that getting angry or upset with the world only dampers those around him. He believes it is much more constructive to build everyone up, even his enemies, because that just makes the world a better place in the end. Bold Bruin takes his cues from his childhood hero Indiana Jones, and while he knows it is okay to be afraid, he also knows that facing the problem head on will end up with a much better chance of success. He jumps in with both feet and is not afraid to bring others along with him, whether this is in his gaming life or his real life. He has always pushed ahead even in the worst of circumstances, surviving some of the worst things a human can endure. He does relish the idea that at least in games he can die without consequence, and all this does is make him even more bold. Wise Teacher Bruin is a professor, and has been for 8 years. He spent many of his younger years getting himself into trouble on archaeological digs, but he has since settled down a bit to pass this knowledge on to the next generation. His wisdom isn't perfect, and he knows that. But he is a smart man, and he knows that too. To this day, he has a high graduation rate of his students, and many of which he still receives letters and postcards from their digs thanking him for his guidance. He also spends much of his time learning and formulating strategies with his MMO guilds, helping the younger gamer generation to hopefully also be less toxic, though this is a much more uphill battle. FLAWS Spoiler Reckless While being bold has positives, it also has downsides. Bruin has landed himself in hot water not an insignificant amount of times, and often because he is not paying attention or is too busy charging ahead. He always wants to be the first in line, even when it isn't a competition or a race. Needless to say, this has worried any of those close to the man, though his recklessness also causes him to disregard their worry. His eternal optimism assures them that everything will be fine, even when it very clearly isn't, and won't be if he keeps going the way he is. Insatiable Bruin has had a successful life. Not a single person ever takes that away from him. If he were to die tomorrow, he could say he did what he set out to do, and often this is what drives him to be so uncaring of the consequences. But this still isn't enough, even for him. He wants to find the one thing in life that defines his legacy, the one thing that people will talk about him in history books for. So despite his success and the fact that he could retire happy and live out his life in comfortable isolation, teaching his students until the day he dies, he still goes out on digs and still pushes himself to find that next great spark in his life. Arrogant Most people like Bruin, and his kind nature allows him to get along with most people. But on the same token, Bruin knows he's successful. He knows he's smart, and he knows he isn't even bad looking. His confidence is a big part of his wisdom and ability to teach, but when it comes down to brass tacks, he pretty much shoves his success in everyone's face, whether he means to or not. This has caused plenty of jealousy in students, other professors, and dig co-workers. In his eternal optimism, Bruin tends to just shrug this off and move on, but perhaps that's what makes his arrogance even more dangerous at times.
