[F1 - PP] The Second Lesson Is Also Free (Starla, Koga, Lishuu, and Recon)

     Starla saw the blow coming from the boar pup from a mile away. It leapt into the air, obviously aiming for her chest, and she stepped off to the side. If the attacks from the boars were going to be so simple, it seemed like battle wasn't going to be as hard as she thought. She just needed to get used to wielding a weapon and then she was sure that she could glide through combat. She just needed to focus on where her blade was going to go.

     The hit from Recon couldn't leave her thoughts though. He was certainly an annoying one, but was he actually helpful in combat? She wasn't sure what he did to attack multiple targets at once, but she didn't have the capacity to do something like that. Maybe he had a multi-target skill or something. She hoped she might be able to get something like that later. That is, if it suited what she wanted. She was thinking of going kind of a stealth assassin build, so maybe multi-target wasn't such a good idea.

     Despite the thought intruding in her head, she gripped her dagger and swung at Boar Pup 1. As she focused all of her energy onto the boar, she felt her blade naturally follow the path her mind had carved for it. Almost as though it was a needle being guided by the string that was pulling it, the dagger sank itself right into the heart of the Boar Pup. The boar turned into dust and Starla felt herself smiling widely. She definitely got the hang of this.

Just like that, the others had killed two boars and left her behind. Lish felt the first pangs of frustration from combat and realized that she did not like the feeling. There was something inherently competitive about it, like she'd failed to measure up. It made her feel inadequate. 

Recon, for as annoying as he was, actually landed the first blow. His attack came dangerously close to wiping out more than one of the pups, but the one hit that landed did more than enough. Starla followed up with a powerful looking hit that carved the second ham and set the table neatly. All Lish had to do was finish the job.

And she couldn't even do that. Her spear thrust wide of the Boar Pup, which squealed wildly in disapproval at the action and started to wildly flail around the group.

One of the boar pups had died from Recon’s swing and cracked up before turning into dust “Far….out?” Recon mumbled to himself. He wasn’t expecting the damn thing to turn into dust like that it was odd plus he was expecting more blood. Recon then turned to the other two to see how their situations were going Starla seemed to be doing fine but Lishuu, on the other hand, wasn’t doing so well.

Recon took a few steps over to Lishuu only to take care of the boar pup Recon got into a battle-ready stance and bent his knees before thrusting the sword forward towards the boar pup. He missed by a long shot and stared at the boar pup and smiled at it “You get a haircut recently? Cause you look a lot nicer now.” He said towards the boar before hearing Lishuu speak. “Look you could be in a hole underground full of water.” in response to her

On second though, maybe taking a group this large out for this quest was a bad idea. This was going to take all day for them to collect their five materials. And that was if the RNG gods were being merciful. Even as Starla managed to kill a pup on her attack, it still left the chances of getting her material in the air.

Koga sighed as he watched Lish miss her attack on the other hand. He didn't even have someone to talk to until one of them actually got all of their materials. Okami next to him yawned as he laid his muzzle on his crossed paws. "Yeah...me too, bud." Koga conjured up an apple from his inventory and bit into it with a satisfying crunch, the sweet juices flowing into his mouth. At least the food in Aincrad was better than it was in the real world, as small a comfort it was.

     Starla managed to kill her boar and sadly she didn't get a material. As she looked at Lishuu to try and see if she was going to kill her boar, another two boar pups flung themselves out of the bushes. Maybe the game was going to keep spawning them for the group until they got all their materials? She was certainly hoping that was the case. It would make things easier for them to not have to hunt down their targets. Starla saw Lishuu miss and before the new boars could get a move in on her, she decided to act first.

     Starla swung and missed horrendously. She thought maybe she had gotten the hang of combat, but maybe she was just lucky with her hit from last time? Starla shook her head, wondering why the blade wasn't going where she thought it was. Maybe she was just unlucky this time. Starla grimaced at the boar, hoping she would get her revenge in the next few seconds. She readied herself to dodge in hopes that the attack from one (or both) boars missed. Starla looked at Recon. "Incoming."

The others continued to fight, but it seemed they were an overall ineffective bunch. Lish realized Starla had missed just before she brought her own weapon around to attempt to do anything, but her spear pierced only air once more. The blue haired girl felt her confidence floundering, almost completely glad that she hadn't tried to fight up until this point. What would have happened to her without Koga here to help? What about the others? She'd be missing, she'd likely have been hit by now, and her health would slowly be whittling away...

Well, on the bright side, she wasn't alone.

If nothing else, she could be supportive. Wasn't that the role she wanted to play anyway? "You've got this guys!" she called out to the others, snapping round to cup her hands alongside her mouth to enhance the volume of her voice. If she couldn't do anything, she would be certain to assure that the others could. She was better at being a cheerleader than the protagonist. With a bright smile on her face, she took a deep breath and called out to Koga.

"Thanks for your help, Koga!"

Recon stepped back from the battle to think about his next actions. 'What to do now? I've already exhausted myself with that first attack. Fuck this is harder than I thought.' Gripping his straight sword tightly Recon stepped back into the fight. He looked at the other two who seemed to be doing well in the current situation. Then two more just popped out of the bushes 'Do they keep spawning until we get the damn materials?' Recon sighed and got into a battle stance once again. This time he started to hype himself up. "Come on let's go I ain't going nowhere." He said in a low voice.

Once in his combat stance Recon got his straight sword ready for an attack. Now he controlled his breathing to calm himself before going forward with an attack. With his straight sword, ready Recon trusted forward with his sword and missed. "Well shit. This is getting unboarable."

Another crunch as Koga took another bite out of the apple. Koga had almost forgotten how hard it could be to hit something without the proper skills and enhancements. It was a wonder he hadn't died when he was their level. In fact, if Koga recalled, he almost had died several times due to his inability to hit anything back then. Well, on the bright side, the other three didn't have to worry about that for now.

"Thanks for your help, Koga!" Lishuu shouted towards him. "Pay attention to the fight!" Koga called back, gesturing with the apple as the three boars (oh, two more joined in?) attacked, lunging at the three players. Well, Koga could already tell just by looking, Starla wasn't going to get out of the way of that one, but the other two had a chance, so long as they were focusing.

On top of that, it looked like Recon was starting to lose some steam. "You guys better wrap this up quickly so you can regen some energy!" the Swordsman advised. Technically, they'd probably be fine without it, but Recon's AoE attacks would certainly help speed things up, provided he could hit the mobs.

     Starla looked as Koga had made a comment about how Lishuu should get her head into the fight. As he said that, Starla had failed to notice a boar heading straight toward her. It slammed into her chest which almost made her lose her footing for a moment. When she looked at her health on the left, there was barely any damage taken. She saw the red number float above her as it said "1". Starla was thankful that she had taken the light armor skill first. If this battle ever got out of hand, she would always be able to manage with a fair bit of mitigation on her end, even if she wasn't a tank per se. As the boar turned around to ready for another head butt, she decided this was a prime time to strike.

     Starla felt her blade dig into the boar, a clean hit. However, it wasn't as effective as the last one she had made somehow. She had gotten lucky with a critical strike with the first strike she landed, so it was only natural to expect her regular hits not to feel as satisfying. She hoped she might be able to rectify that in the future. The boar didn't go down instantly with the hit she made, just injure it a little bit. It looked angry as it had been hit and began to focus on her. She hoped the other boars would begin attacking her too. She could at least negate their damage if it came down to it. Starla looked over to Lishuu who had missed every time she tried to attack. "Don't worry about how accurate you are Lishuu. Just keep attacking until you get tired! I'll take care of the rest."

Koga told her to pay attention, but honestly, she was already paying all the attention she could muster. This kind of thing just wasn't... wasn't for her. Even when Starla told her to continue fighting, and that she'd pick up the slack, Lishuu's Accuracy got no better. He attacks never hit. And no, it was painfully obvious that she was expected to pull her own weight.

Her shoulders visibly sagged. What a tragedy, to be trapped in a world where your skills meant nothing. People thrived in society when they had something other people could use or benefit from, but inside of Aincrad, all the possibilities that the world beyond carried were translated into a system where numbers reigned Supreme.

Small wonder that she was useless.

Even Koga wanted none of her cheer and that was enough to drive anyone mad. "Let's just worry about getting you two those materials," she said, her voice measured. She didn't care about the quest anymore, and if she could have walked away, she would have. The frustration didn't show on her face, but she was ready to disregard this encounter entirely.

At this point, Recon was out of breath those last attacks took a toll on him and he was bent over taking deep breaths. He then looked up and saw the boar pup coming in for an attack. “Oh hello, bud nice day eh?” maybe being nice to them would help right? 

Clearly, Recon was wrong and the boar pup got into a stance ready to charge the Canadian full force. He got ready to take the attack head-on the boar pup began to charge him. For once luck was on Recon’s side again and the boar pup tripped upon their charge. “Thank you creator or whatever is watching over me.” He mumbled to himself.

The constant attacks draining his energy had taken a toll on him and Recon decided that this was enough for now. “Alright cover me I gotta take a second to catch my breath.” He said to the two.

Koga looked on as the other three players played with the boar pups. Or maybe the pups were playing with them, it was kind of hard to tell at this point. In any case, Star tried to shout some encouragement to Lish, which only seemed to have the opposite effect on the girl. He figured she was feeling pretty useless at the moment, being the only one thus far who hadn't yet managed to hit one of the nasty little buggers. He understood how she felt, but she had to understand that it was a numbers game after all. And a little bit of luck. But the numbers could always be skewed in her favor. It wouldn't be like this forever if she could just tough it out.

Recon on the other hand bent over to take a breather. It looked like Koga had been right, the man had used a little too much energy. Unfortunately for him, the same boar pup from before decided to take advantage of Recon's apparent moment of weakness and charge forward again. Not that it was going to hit him, that poor thing had tripped more times than Koga could be bothered to count. Lish and Star on the other hand...they were in a little more trouble (admittedly that trouble was only chip damage, but still). Their dancing partners apparently wanted to trade and suddenly they were rushing past each other and at their new targets.

     Starla felt the slight push of a boar bumping into her and she looked down at it. "Pathetic." Her gaze bore down on the boar as she brandished her dagger in her right hand, bringing it down quickly on the boar before it could run away. She stuck it straight in the eye. A critical notification came across her screen as a 5! floated above the boar. Starla looked to Lishuu and the others. Recon was having a hard time recovering himself after doing his big sweeping attack and Lishuu seemed to be having a tough time even hitting a target. She decided she would focus on Lishuu. She was losing steam and she couldn't have her giving up just yet. "C'mon Lishuu, it's okay! The first combat is always the hardest. The mechanics are a bit wonky, so take your time. I'll take care of the immediate threats. We just need to collect as many tusks as we can!" Starla noticed her boar once again didn't drop a tusk. "Tsk." The drop rate on these damn things must be super low. Hope it doesn't take all day.

It seemed that Starla wasn't willing to let Lishuu give in. The blue haired woman sighed and shook her head at how easily positivity could lift her spirits. Then again, was that really such a bad thing? Alicia hated to let her friends down, and when they did things to help improve her mood, she immediately felt like she had to live up to the confidence that they placed in her.

So, without giving her determination up, the woman hefted her heavy Lance again and turned to face the Boar that had, as of yet, evaded every attempt she'd made to pierce it. No more. With a few sways of her hips, Lish steadied herself and waited for the precise moment when the creature would be mid-motion and unable to stop itself.

She pulsed the spear out, and with a pathetic yelp, the piggish brute took the tip of her weapon and kept sliding along the haft. With an expression like shock, Lishuu watched the Mob evaporate into strands of data like she'd hit it with a speeding car. 

"Good lord!" she cried out in surprise. "I... I got it!" she announced, flustered. 

She took stock of the situation and deflated a bit. "But of course, no drops."

Recon watch as the other two fought off the boar pups as he took a break from fighting. “This is fun….so far” It wasn’t really he’d rather be exploring the place or sleeping but no here he is fighting boar pups. ‘Fuck I’d rather be sleeping than doing this shit.’ with that thought Recon went back to watching them. By god Lishuu actually hit the boar “Fuck yeah bud good work! Now do it three more times. Then you’ll probably be done with this….probably.” after speaking Recon took a knee to rest. Recon watched the boar’s attempts at attacking him failing. He smiled before speaking to the boar to give the thing a moral boost even if the thing didn’t understand him. “Come on you are getting closer it shouldn’t be too hard to hit me. I mean I’m a huge fucking target.” Afterward Recon took a deep breath and sat down it’s not like the boar pup would be able to kill him right?

Koga was actually a little taken aback by the cold-blooded manner with which Starla killed the Boar Pup. He tended to consider himself pretty ruthless when it came to mob-slaying but even he had a little bit of a soft spot for the little guys. Starla though...she had no problem whatsoever thrusting her dagger into that poor little guy's eye socket. He'd have to remember not to piss that one off.

A cheer shocked Koga's system back to reality as another pup exploded into code fragments on Lishuu's spear. Her enthusiasm quickly died off though as she realized she hadn't gotten any of the quest loot from the pup. "Welcome to Aincrad," Koga called to her, his cynicism really about to shine through, "where it takes thirty-thousand years to kill anything, and you don't even get any good loot for your trouble!"

Recon seemed to have had about as much of this fight as everyone else as he plopped himself down in the dirt and practically begged for the pup to hit him...well, as you can imagine, it tripped...again...remarkable, I know.

     Starla saw that the last boar was alive and figured she would take a crack at killing it since Recon seemed to be resting. Was there such a thing as exhaustion in this game? If so, she worried how much longer she could last. Then again, she was only hitting with her single attack and not a sweeping AoE like Recon had. Maybe the amount of energy it used up differed? Starla had no clue, but that must've been the case. However, as she ran up to her prey, she slipped. She faceplanted onto the ground and sighed. "Ugh. Well that was disappointing." She looked to Lishuu, hoping she would be able to finish it off as she had the other boar pup. Starla looked to Koga who had made a snotty remark. "We'll get the loot eventually. Just I wonder if the drop rate is low or something..." Yeah, that must've been it. These things were way too weak. Maybe the system expects us to kill a bunch of them?

Oh, thank heavens.

Perhaps it got easier after the first time, but when Lish came around for the next Boar Pup, her lance ripped straight through with low effort. The creature let out a pitiful yowl in response, but the attack had been on the whole much less damaging than her first. Because of that, it didn't simply wipe the creature off the face of Aincrad.

Which meant that it turned its sights on her. She felt a chill run down her spine as it's artificial enmity focused in her direction, and she held the lance level as she took a healthy hop backward. "I don't think it's happy with me," she blinked as she kept the weapon leveled between her and imminent danger. "But I got it! Someone else finish the job!"

Admittedly, the lack of instant gratification was enough to dishearten her as much as all the previous failures to hit at all. This system wasn't unfair per se, but it didn't have any love for those who weren't accustomed to it. In short, a true product of her generation, Lishuu was most disgruntled by Cardinal's lack of basic human empathy.

...well, maybe the programmer's lack of compassion was a more apt conclusion to draw.

Regardless, she watched carefully to see what the Boar Pup would do next.
