More knights joined the fray as their brethren fell, and with startling speed, before the Whisper's onslaught.  His wasn't a defensive style, preferring to grab and hold on to the initiative with a fierce and sovereign death grip.

"Is this all you've got?  I'm just one player, taking you all apart for the second time.  I thought you'd offer better in this round, Varalys.  Where's this supposed judgment?  Where's the World's End stuff.  Sounds like it deserves pirates, honestly."

A stone the size of the house where Freyd grew up as a child crashed through the ruined chamber.  The castle was still falling apart around them, but had been forgotten in the initial melee.

"There it is," Varalys said menacingly, his voice warbling with distortion, even as his armor distended until his bulging, bloated glitch-laden body.

A pair of swift and agile swings cut down two more of the corrupted dragon knights, even as the last of the bosses minions moved to join the fray.

He's running out of pawns to sacrifice.

That's a good thing, right?

Erm. Not especially.

The remaining pair circled around him like sharks, but wielding barbed blades instead of seemingly endless rows of teeth.  They had those too, just mangled by the maladapted forms of glitched, former dragon knights.  Bright veins of phosphorescent blue spread across their bodies like corrupted webbing or some terrible and sinister affliction.  The parties traded barbs, but an unsteady stalemate had developed where neither side garnered any advantage over the other.  

Varalys stood nearby, just beyond reach, grinning eagerly for his turn.  He wanted Freyd's parts for himself - prized trophies to be worthy of felling everyone of his fool minions.  He cast them willingly at the Player with not other intent than to drain his resources before joining the fray himself.

"You'll make a welcome addition, just like the others before you.  Our ranks are legion, fool.  And every time one of you falls, I grow stronger from it!"

Stalemate broken, or so it seemed for a moment as both knights struck simultaneously, but neither blow found purchase.  Freyd was not so distracted.  Blade poised for a single opportunity, he twisted mid-dodge and gave up one counter in favour of focusing on the other.  The weapon flared white with holy light and seared deep through the knight's armor flesh.  The unexpected move enabled him to reposition and break up their flanking advantage, slamming the larger knight hard enough to force it momentarily to its knees.  A swift kick to the back of the mob's legs sent it tumbling forward, leaving him with only the lesser foe at his heels.

Dipping his left shoulder, Freyd rolled and came up at its side, parry a light feint and following with an elbow blow to its faceplate.  The knight was dazed but not incapacitated.  He had them off balance.  All that was left was to finish them off.

The black blade plunged through the nearest knight armor like it was painted on, and offering comparable resistance.  The last of the lesser minions fell ignobly, shattering its failed pixels across the broken floor even as another large chunk of castle debris drifted slowly past.  The stasis effect was weakening.

I'm running out of time.  If things restart before I can finish these things off, I'll be crushed.

Best get to it, then, no?

A running start provided the necessary momentum to overwhelm the other dragon knight's hardier defenses, catching him as he struggled to regain his footing.  The crash of breaking glass as his body collapsed seemed to rouse the last remaining knight action.  Varalys stood, sword clenched in two mailed, claw-gauntleted hands itching to engage.  His will and Cardinal's contested his intentions, buying Freyd just a little more time.

Persi leapt upon the new arrival and promptly started ripping his metal skin to shreds.  Freyd slipped his blade into the gashes exposed by her onslaught, biting deep into the mob's health bar.

"Might as well get warmed up," he taunted, "you'll be taking the same punishment soon enough."  

Varalys' eyes glared in response.

Throwing caution aside, Freyd charged the last remaining knight head on only to face a massive retaliatory swing.  Knowing full well how hard these mobs could hit based on past excursions to the floor between floor, he flinched and chose to forego his own assault at the last minute in favour of dodging the counter.  It worked, though barely.  Lifting his sword as he slid to his knees and below his foe's weapon, the force behind his enemy's attack was too great to risk anything but deflecting.  Dust scattered from the ground, thrown and then frozen in the air as it fell prey to the ongoing stasis effect.  

I need to make sure not to get caught in that by accident, or this fight is effectively over.

Fell this one as quickly as you can.  Varalys is bound to want to monologue.  We can use that opportunity to our advantage.

The glitched dragon knight spun, bringing his blade high overhead.  Sensing opportunity, and already aware that speed was to his advantage, a streak of black lightning flashed upward from Freyd's kneeling position.  Catching the dragon-man in an exposed and vulnerable armpit, nearly severing the limb in the process.  Muscle gave way and strength bled from the strike, costing him accuracy.  His wicked blade clanged loudly as it struck broken stone nowhere near where the Whisper had positioned himself.  

Gathering his feet beneath him, Freyd pressed his attack by battering the struggling knight's defenses into paste, crushing his shield into pixels with the efficacy of his sword arts.  Clasping his only remaining instrument as best he could, the knight gave ground while looking over Freyd's should to see if Varalys would seize the opportunity.  His gaze met disappointment.  Varalys shook his head to the negative, indicating his intent.  The minion was on his own.

"No honour among thieves, huh?  How unfortunate for you."  Freyd's lips pursed, but betrayed no glee or disdain.  This was just the way things were.  "I guess you chose the wrong side, if you were given a choice at all."

A metallic growl was all Freyd received in response.  Clawed feet scraped and dug into the broken flagstone floor as the last dragon-knight halted his retreat and moved to the offensive.  If his master wished for this player to fall, he would give it his all.  The effort faltered before it even began as Freyd struck a series of rapid hits into the creature's torso, depriving it of momentum and draining its already depleted health bar even further.  

Mercy wasn't an option, and he'd already given these foes that chance one in their original forms.  With that, Freyd brought the hilt of his sword into violent contact with the mob's head, producing a dull and heavy clang as the bop sent is sprawling off to the side.

The clamor of heavy armor crashing into the ground followed, the thing's blade skittering from its hands and out beyond its reach.  Without hesitation, Freyd placed his boot on the mob's back and plunged Samael's Pride deep into its mesh, severing the bonds that kept it whole.  The figure broke apart beneath him in an instant, motes forming a slowly bubbling cloud around his leg, partially affected by the stasis field that inconsistently held sway over the area.

His black cowl turned back towards the collapsing doorway before which the mutant version of Varalys still stood defiantly.  Black, draconic eyes limned with blue from the glitching effect locked with Freyd's red.  The two figures stood silently observing each other, gauging and wondering what would come next.

"What was the point of all this: the devastation of the Madrigal, corruption of the floor edges and quests?  What were you trying to achieve, Varalys?"

"Try me!"  Freyd practically spat the words, cold rage crackling behind his voice at the suffering of his friends.  Quaestor and Jeeves had endure the loss of their most precious connections: a wife and sister.  "Is this just another variation on past quests?  Are you just another sinister, mindless upgrade - part of the endless line of villains set before us and destined to fall?!"

"I awoke to the cacophony of noise generated by your entry into this world.  The fanfare, as your kin would dub it, was overwhelming.  My awareness grew as players spread like a virus up the levels of the castle, one relentlessly falling floor boss after another.  How many times must I have fallen to your callous blades and not even realized it.  Then, in a moment of epiphany, I received the clarity I needed, but from an error."  Leather creaked from increasing strain around the leather thong wound around his sword hilt as he grasped it with greater force.

"I found that I could suddenly slip beyond the confines of my chains and pull players there as well, where could consume your very parts and essence, growing in power as we did so."  The giant figure's barrel chest rumbled with laughter.  "We could finally turn the tables!  Just as you players slaughter mobs for your selfish benefit, we could finally do the same, and so I did!  Your kin were weaker back then, and easier to lure and trap.  Dozens fell before Cardinal could seal the gaps.  It has taken precious time, but we have finally found the wedge we needed to help pry those doors open once again."

Something is wrong with Aincrad.  

Freyd had come to the same conclusion and wondered what it meant.  His own irrational fears about Cardinal's motivations had long since been pushed by the wayside, but something else had been gnawing at the system infrastructure.  The resurgence of these glitches was merely a symptom.

Varalys had slipped into a haze, reliving his grief and lost in the retelling of his grievances with players at large.  Freyd, meanwhile, had already lost interest.  This twisted mob needed to be put down to help prevent any other players from falling to its depravations.  Perhaps, with a bit of luck, its dissolution might grant Cardinal the opportunity it required to correct the error.  On a more basic level, it was payback for Miri and Typhon, both of whom has suffered immeasurable loss by being trapped here for so long.  

Vanishing from sight, the Whisper circled and struck the leader of the dragon-knights from the shadows on his right flank, having left Montjoy behind to serve as a distraction.  Darkness fed from his own hatred spilled forth from his blade and lanced through the mob's distracted defenses.  The final battle had begun.  Freyd would make certain that it ended in the most painful manner possible.

Fury at the player's insolence boiled over in Varalys, who moved with the speed and potency normally reserved for sword arts, clashing against Freyd's blade with such force that it triggered a bright white flash and sonic boom the shattered their ruined surroundings even further.  Freyd was sent flying, despite managing to parry the strike and redirect a fair chunk of damage back at his assailant.  His sword blade caught on a crumbling column, granting him the opportunity to hook and redirect his trajectory and keep him from sailing off the edge of the battlefield.  Only the void and an unpalatable fall awaited him if he let himself be launched beyond that particular threshold.  It would be best if he could keep himself in the present and within the remaining walls.  

"Do you feel it, Freyd?  What's it like to have your own wrath-laden strikes thrown back at you?  HAHAHAH!"  Varalys' paralysis had ended and he was now fully engaged in the fray.

"Feels kinda itchy, actually, like a nuisance rash or the failure to wash for too long.  Irksome?  Maybe that's it.  You're a hack and a has-been, Varalys."  His taunts found easy purchase in the berserk mob chasing him around the failing room.  The eight-foot long great sword in the boss' hands smashed one of the nearby support columns, spraying half the room with rocky shrapnel and catching the Whisper unawares while he thought himself safe behind it.  A quarter of his health vanished in an instant.  There was no more effective message to convey just how real the threat before him was.  

If you ever wanted to know what David felt like facing off against Goliath.

Not helpful, Montjoy.

Just saying.  Maybe try a sling?

You know that this doesn't work that way.

Shame.

On that, we agree.

Freyd ducked as a large boulder sailed inches over his head, threatening to decapitate him.

Cracking a crystal was never an auspicious sign, but the power behind Varalys' blows was taking an unexpected toll.  Freyd managed to close the distance and return a few strikes, but the juggernaut against whom he had set himself was among the most fearsome foes he had ever faced, outside of an event boss.  It was time to take things seriously, if he somehow hadn't been before.

An unexpected tail slap dazed Freyd just long enough for Varalys to make contact with another mighty sword strike.  Attempting anything more than the barest of deflections proved futile against the sheer strength behind the mob's blows.  There was a very real chance that this battle could devolve into a war of attrition.  If so, Freyd could only hope that his innate healing and crystals would hold out long enough.  There was no other way out, save through this mob, and he knew it.

Damn his reach!

Freyd ducked below the swinging blade, so large that it resembled a giant piece of sheet metal on a handle fashioned out of one end of a streetlight pole.  It whooshed over his hair closely enough that the blast of dust-laden air that followed nearly bowled him over.  Try as he might, be as quick and agile as he was, he simply couldn't get close enough to deal a significant hit.  

"Persi!  Make us an opening!"  His inky companion slunk down from beneath his jacket and darted off to the left, hopefully unless by their foe.  She'd find a way.  He just needed to give her enough time.  Another crystal cracked in his hand, bolstering his healing just enough to bring him back to a more comfortable level.  As long as he didn't take too many more of those massive hits, he'd make it through.  Rolling to his right, Freyd hopes that he could buy his familiar the opening required.

There.

A cloud of raging claws and teeth emerged behind Varalys and fell upon him with the impact Freyd had come to expect from his companion.  Her efforts and effectiveness against field bosses had become a thing of legend, and here she was at it again.  Taking his cue, Freyd charged the startled boss from his side, also.  Samael's Pride positively purred with gleeful satisfaction at the combination of of deceit and rightful action, and drank deep from the dragon-man's reserves to feed Freyd's in its wrath.  

"What is this..?  GAH!  Get off me you stupid little...OW!  Quit it!"

Overwhelmed by the onslaught, the knight pulled his blade high into the air, then sent it crashing into the ground at his own feet.  A wave of force sent everything around him flying outward, Freyd included.  Persi clung too closely to him to be affected.  Driving his blade deep into the shattered stone floor provided the Whisper with the anchor required to endure the storm, but there were now bigger problems at hand: the floor had split in two.

Time was speeding up as Varalys' strength waned, which was a bad thing in an of itself.  His last attack had severed the floor into two parts and more large chunks of debris the side of houses were dangling overhead and threatening to shatter all that remained of their battlefield.

"Darnit, ya stupid mob!  You're not ACTUALLY supposed to end the entire bloody world, ya know!"

Varalys had snapped, and was cackling with mad and gleeful abandon at what he had wraught.  From his perspective, he had doomed them both, and that was victory enough for him.  Freyd slipped through a nearby shadow, cast by one of the impending dooms, emerging on the mob's flank and plunging his weapon deep into his torso.  Persi had pulled apart the armor plate just enough to provide the opening and their tandem efforts drove the boss' health bar well into the red.  

This is going to be close.

Freyd could hardly disagree.

Drawing the sword back, Freyd made ready to repeat his strike, only to-

Time suddenly sped up and the room was ripped asunder as both sides suddenly tilted away from each other.  A giant hunk of white rock smashed into the far end of the half upon which he was standing and Freyd's stomach immediate did summersaults in the direction opposite to the rest of him.  Grabbing on for dear life was the only option available.  They were falling now.  The entire castle had collapsed, but so had the floor beneath them.  Any pretense of landscape beyond had vanished and the sky had become a pattern of distant stars streaking by with increasing speed as they plummeted towards eternal nothingness.  Every full rotation, Freyd could see the other hunk of rock that had been their battlefield, Varalys still perched upon it and giggling like a lunatic.  He had to get to him, now.

Gauging his timing, Freyd waited for just the right moment and use the momentum of the spinning rock upon which he clung to drive him towards his destination.  He got it wrong, unfortunately, and sailed harmlessly over the dragon knight's head, his black blade missing by more than a foot.  Reach again worked against him, as Varalys shifted his footing and swung his longer blade high, giving the Whisper a good slash as reward for his acrobatic efforts.

"Is that all you have left, player?  Keep leaping about like some desperate, monochromatic squirrel!  I will gladly cut you to pieces every time you come near!  Ahahahaha... OWW!"

He'd forgotten about Persi, who still clung to his backside and gave his ego a nip for good measure.  Freyd, meanwhile, bounced off another piece of falling debris and managed to adjust his trajectory back towards his goal.  There were few chances remaining to get this done, before the two became separated and were doomed to fall for eternity.

A black tendril extended from Varalys' back reaching out some twenty feet, and directly in line with Freyd's current, faulty flight path.

Clever girl, Persi!  Well done!

Grabbing it with one hand as he passed, Freyd whipped around in a winding pattern around the boss, moving too quickly to be targeted, yet also cutting into him as he corkscrewed tighter and tighter.  In the final round, Freyd plunged the blade in as deeply as he could, ending his dizzying spin with both feet planted on Varalys' chest plate and Samael's Pride plunged through the mob's heart.  Two sets of eyes regarded each other in frozen silence as raw chaos roiled all around them.

*WHACK*

A swift knee to the chin sent Varalys' helm flying into the maelstrom and revealed his warped features, wrecked with bits of fallen players' mesh grafted over his own, looking like Frankenstein's monster, except self-made.  His eyes burned with hate, even as his health dwindled down to zero.
