Astralin 0 Posted March 20, 2021 #1 Share Posted March 20, 2021 Astralin had been trying to uncover quite a bit. She had indeed learned of the Essence, but what was its significance in that strange book she found not too long ago? Whatever the case, she was off to the fourth floor to fight that...Frost Beast! Yeah, that's what it was called! She intended to fight it for an Essence, but suddenly she stopped as reality dawned on her...she probably couldn't beat it on her own. Well, she was still in the settlement of Snowfrost, so she still had time to look for something or someone to help her. She unlocked the unusual book and opened it up. Oh...right...it was all written in something she couldn't read. Not even the Cardinal was translating it...it must have been an invented font not known by the system. Whatever the case, she closed the book back up, locked it, and stowed it away in her inventory. She wandered for a bit, then saw someone who she decided to ask for help. "Excuse me, do you have some spare time to help me fight a tough monster?" @Freyd Stats and Equipment: Spoiler Level: 19 Max HP: 380 Max EN: 38 Base DMG: 6(Martial Arts Rank 3[+5]) Equipment: [T1]Gloves of the Astral Storm(1 Bleed, 1 Paralyze)[Equipped] [T1]Sticky Ricky(3 DMG) [T1]Alkarina's Resolve(2 EVA, 1 REC)[Equipped] [T1]Amulet of Aknossoth(2 ACC, 1 REC)[Equipped] Skills: First Aid Rank 3 Martial Arts Rank
Freyd 0 Posted March 20, 2021 #2 Share Posted March 20, 2021 Freyd's mug stopped a fraction of an inch from pursed lips eagerly awaiting the next sip of vanilla-scented acrid delight that was his morning cup of coffee. A request for help? Here? At this hour?! The leather in his black on black outfit creaked even as the supple wool cowl the colour of charcoal turned, exposing a single red eye to the source of this sudden request. Another innocent-looking young blonde stood poised and politely pleading her request. How many of these were there? The thought was dismissed as soon as it was given mental voice. It didn't matter. People tooled their appearances regularly, and it was hardly an accurate measure of their abilities, especially in Aincrad. Turning left, then right, Freyd assured himself that she wasn't addressing another. Ironic that he should be asked for assistance here, of all places, where his own journey began. A flood of memories recalled him standing in starting garb behind a brash and bellowing baby tank soon to be facing the front lines. Things had certainly changed, but the memory triggered an unexpected sense of obligation. "Yes. I can help you." Astralin 0 Posted March 20, 2021 Author #3 Share Posted March 20, 2021 From the man Astralin had spoken to, only came a few words. Well, she now knew he was willing to help...now to explain the situation...which she probably should have done first. "So I was hoping to go back to The Frozen Wastes in order to fight The Frost Beast for an Essence of Steel. I know I am able to heal injuries, and strike with my innate power, but...I kind of over invested in my healing too early. My damage output suffered as a result, and I'm not sure I can handle that ice cannon on my own...so that's why I need your help." She explained. I've been to the quest location before, so I know where it is...unless you already know that as well." She added. Hopefully this player was understanding...and, well, she did remember what was said to her the last time she spoke to a hooded individual on the fourth floor...
Freyd 0 Posted March 20, 2021 #4 Share Posted March 20, 2021 Freyd nodded his understanding and agreement repeatedly as the girl sought to explain herself, finally having to raise both hands up to get her attention and intervene. "Hey, yeah, it's fine. Don't worry about it. That ice golem can be fairly daunting early on, I get it. Grab or prepare anything you need." Downing his coffee in a single, long slurp, wisps of steam fumed from his mouth into the frigid cold as he pulled the cup away. Dismissing it to the ether, his hand then slipped into a pocket in space, disappearing from view for a moment before seemingly tearing a hole in the fabric of the game itself. The tear soon became a sliver, which he grasped at the base, engulfing it in the thinnest possible veil of white light - a holy seal around pure, hungry void. It might as well be a five foot long black hole, which he casually wielded as a blade. Freyd was an odd one, seemingly cold and not easily moved, and yet also willing to help on a casual whim. He motioned for Astralin to follow, leading them towards Snowfrost's outer limits. "What do you need the essence for, if I may ask?"
Astralin 0 Posted March 20, 2021 Author #5 Share Posted March 20, 2021 It didn't take very long for Astralin to check her inventory, so it wasn't long before she followed the player once he gestured for her to follow. The man pulled out a blade that seemed to be made of...void? Wow...Astralin really didn't know such weapons existed...but she actually found it intriguing, to an extent. She was asked why she needed the Essence, and, well, she'd have to be honest here... "Well, there is a use I have for it, but I might wait and see if I should before I try. Simply put, it's for this." She said as she pulled out an unusual axe out of her inventory. This axe's blade looked like it was a wedge taken out of a CD, but it wasn't necessarily the kind of weapon Astralin would use. "I have an item that can change the name, appearance and description, maybe even the item type, of an existing piece of equipment. But it's still an uncommon item otherwise. I want to make the best use of it, especially because of it's enchant- er, enhancement, Burn. So I'm hoping an Essence of steel can optimize it, if you know what I mean." She explained. Freyd 0 Posted March 20, 2021 #6 Share Posted March 20, 2021 Freyd paused to examine the weapon, his merchant's eye appraising its worth and qualities in an instant. Twisting it to and fro a few times, he handed it back to Astralin a few moments later, hit first, before walking on. "An interesting weapon. Are you sure that this is what you want to invest in? I probably have better lying around my shop that could better benefit from your efforts. They don't come cheap, mind you. Raidou may enjoy flooding the market with his wonderful toys and trinkets, but it's not my preferred way of doing business." The scenery dimmed to a deeper, icy blue as they descended into a nearby valley. Wind howled through gaps in the mountainous ridges that reached high overhead on either side. This was a nasty site, a little too conveniently prepped for an ambush. Freyd's gaze was ever watchful. "There," he finally spoke, pointing at a skull in the center of the clearing ahead. Judging by its size and shape, it once belonged to an immense beast. "The boss will be summoned when you touch it. Why don't you go drum on it, then play nice for a bit. I'll be nearby. You have fresh underwear if you need it, right?" Without another word or instruction, Freyd vanished from sight, seeking a proper vantage for the coming battle. *** Freyd activates Hiding: ID #185934 | LD: 10+5=15 (success)
Astralin 0 Posted March 20, 2021 Author #7 Share Posted March 20, 2021 (edited) Oh...this player was a merchant himself from what Astralin was able to piece together from his words. "I-it's not like this came cheap either...two thousand col for an axe with a single enhancement..." Astralin responded. The player would escort Astralin to the wastes, and then give his explanation. "There, The boss will be summoned when you touch it. Why don't you go drum on it, then play nice for a bit. I'll be nearby. You have fresh underwear if you need it, right?" The player said before suddenly vanishing. What a strange thing to finish with. Astralin's face reddened slightly when she heard this. "Ahhhhhhhh......." She looked around her, then she decided it was time to take a risk. She hesitated before walking over to the skull. She picked up the bone from the cold ground, and she struck it. The Frost Beast was summoned, and now it was time to fight. "That guy have better not abandoned me..." She thought and hoped. She then activated her Sword Art. "Aerrakea!" She called out, and the vanity effect of her amulet became active, making her eyes glow during this attack. While she missed, the Frost Beast had a hard time trying to attack her as well. Freyd 0 Posted March 21, 2021 #8 Share Posted March 21, 2021 Spreading its arms wide and craning forward to make itself look even more intimidating, the Frost Beast unleashed a mighty, spittle-strewn roar the sent waves of loose, powdery snow rippling away from it. The ground shook from the sheer volume, also forcing Astralin to cover her ears and partially avert her eyes. Expecting some doom-laden smite from a fist the size of a small car, what followed instead was the sound of a giant pane of glass, shattering. A tidal wave of orange pixels washed over her as the titan dissolved into nothing more than a mountain of bluish-white pixels that felt strangely warm as they drifted over her body. The thing was so huge that the volume coming down threatened to push her off her feet, until they all vanished, leaving behind only a figure in black. Grabbing her pale forearm, he yanked her up out of the false snow and slapped something hard, cold, metallic and wet into her hand. "There ya go. Nice and easy. Promise given, and promise fulfilled." A goofy grin splayed across his face, Freyd had given her the desired reward and seemed barely winded by the effort. The black blade shifted back onto his shoulder with ease as he stuffed his other hand into a previously invisible pocket. "So, does that give you what you needed?" Astralin 0 Posted March 21, 2021 Author #9 Share Posted March 21, 2021 Well, to say that this could have started better or worse would be a solid statement. Astralin Would have readied her next attack, but then the monster let loose a deafening roar and a miniature blizzard that stopped her from taking action as she covered her ears to avoid losing her sense of hearing in-game. Didn't this sort of thing only happen in games like the Monster Hunter games that her brother liked to play? Well, Astralin didn't have earplugs level five, so she missed her chance. Luckily for her, the monster suddenly shattered before it could land an attack. Astralin looked around and saw only the player who had vanished before this fight began. He must have..wait, he'd just one shot the monster, there was no mistaking what just happened here! The player then pulled her up from her forearm and helped her back up, proceeding to place an Essence of Steel in her hands...it was much colder, and wetter, than she thought it was going to be. It's not melting, is it? A goofy grin that cheered up Astralin spread across the man's face, she couldn't help but give a light chuckle at least. "Th-thanks...I think s-so..." She answered, despite starting to feel chilled. She stowed the item away in her inventory after she spoke.
Freyd 0 Posted March 22, 2021 #10 Share Posted March 22, 2021 "It's a shame that the respawn timer on this thing is so long, or it might actually be worth farming. But it will be awhile before the skull reappears. Was there anything else you needed done while we're out here? There's also a gang of kids back in Snowfrost that regularly have snowball fights. Might be worth a shot, if you've got the time." A quick tap opened a small glowing panel in the air off to Freyd's side. He still had time, though it was growing short. "The frontlines will be gathering soon for the next floor boss battle, and I mean to join them, but I can spare a few moments, if you need it. Also, consider taking a spin up to Freyd Edges in Angel Point on floor 13. It's my shop, and may have some blades to suit your future needs. We also offer discounts on roasted marshmallow insurance, if that ever becomes an issue for you."
Astralin 0 Posted March 22, 2021 Author #11 Share Posted March 22, 2021 Astralin considered the options. It made enough sense that it took a while for this monster to respawn, since the item it drops was said to increase the quality of an existing item... "I didn't actually have anything else planned. I didn't think this would end so quickly...this definitely was nothing like the last time...then again, there was a bit of a fight that I made myself the moderator of that occurred after that other time when the frost beast was slain while I was around..." She admitted. "You know, participating in a snowball fight...that's actually not a bad idea. Sure, you throw snowballs at others, but you've also gotta dodge the ones headed for you. Might make for a fun way to practice evasive maneuvers." She remarked. "I wouldn't mind you being around a bit longer." She added. "One thing though... 'Roasted Marshmallow Insurance'? what's that?" She asked, kind of confused on the matter.
Freyd 0 Posted March 23, 2021 #12 Share Posted March 23, 2021 "Oh, the insurance? It's a thing I came up with when one of my guildmates wanted a flaming familiar. We got talking about how you could use it to roast marshmallows, which led to this whole conversation about how best to do so. I prefer the golden one, just lightly seared on the exterior," Freyd, who had hardly said much at all during their entire journey to this point, was suddenly endlessly rambling about the strangest of topics. His mouth moved a mile a minute, even as his black-gloved hands waved around emphatically, to embellish the magnitude of the absurdity. "But she insisted that the super-charred briquette ones, where the exterior was completely black, had to be the best. Naturally, this led to a good-natured debate about how wrong she was and the fact that there should definitely be something available to offset the loss of perfectly roasted marshmallows; hence, roasted marshallow insurance." Hands splayed hi, in full ta-da, he looked like he was trying to convey some sort of epiphany in the most Willy-Wonka sort of way. "Yeah. Ummm... so..." The sudden, downward swing of his arm brought his shadowy blade back to hand, just for a moment, but long enough to trigger a sword art directed at a low, downward angle. An instant later, and too quickly to do anything about it, a massive spray of ice and snow exploded from the drift that lay between them, completely engulfing the poor girl in a wave of frost and fun. "Tag," came the muffled laughter from the far side, once the mound had settled over Astralin. "And game on!"
Astralin 0 Posted March 28, 2021 Author #13 Share Posted March 28, 2021 A flaming familiar? Roasting the marshmallows? Freyd noted how that conversation went into the best ways to do so, and he gave his opinion. "I like the mostly golden ones too. Especially if the inside is completely molten...so good..." Astralin admitted. Freyd would then reveal the kind of marshmallow the one who wanted the familiar preferred. "Whaaat? But it's just burnt if it's like that, a loss and waste of a perfectly good marshmallow!" Astralin remarked. Well, at least the two were definitely in agreement here, and now Astralin understood the need for Marshmallow Insurance. Not long after that, Freyd would suddenly activate a sword art, and the result would cause a great deal of snow to be flung onto Astralin, until she was practically under a mound. Oh, now things were going somewhere. She smiled, and saw a bunch of snow that was large enough to be hit...and...Astralin could try spreading into the air with a hit from an area of effect attack...and she knew just the one. Tornado Kick. "Aerrakea!" She called out, and she would strike the snow mound with a sweeping strike, sending the snow out in a semicircle, away from Astralin and towards a number of directions...though she probably missed. Freyd 0 Posted March 28, 2021 #14 Share Posted March 28, 2021 Freyd held his blade upright before him releasing only the slightest sliver of its seal to absorb the wave of snow thrown his way. This was just for fun. There was to be no risk involved, and so he guarded against any excessive use of his sword arts. A daydream flashed across his mind of some poor player having to explain how he earned an orange icon because of a snowball fight. It was amusing in its absurdity, yet all too possibly real in its potential. Cardinal was unforgiving, at the best of times. "What say we do this the old fashioned way, just in case?" Dismissing his weapon completely, Freyd grabbed a wide swath of powder and mashed it together into a ball. With gloves and the Survival skill, he might still have an advantage, but this wasn't really that sort of contest. If anything, it was a test of whether he could actually let his guard down low and long enough to actually enjoy himself. "Heads up, blondie!" A barrage of snowballs followed, unrelenting and surprisingly accurate in their aim. Growing up in Canada, even on the west coast, had taught him a thing or two about technique. Within a minute, Freyd was laughing like a mischievous child as he continued to pelt his opponent with harmless balls of fluff. He hadn't done anything like this in a long, long time. Astralin 0 Posted March 28, 2021 Author #15 Share Posted March 28, 2021 Freyd blocked the attempt, and then suggested that they do this the old fashioned way, just in case. Yeah, it was probably safer. Well, time to launch some snowballs, and dodge the incoming ones. Astralin got pelted with a fair number of snowballs, and it was difficult to throw a single one without being a sitting duck that got hit. She'd need some cover...and there was plenty in the trees. Once finally among them, she quickly prepared a good number of snowballs, and it was time to retaliate. Just because she was only able to participate in snowball fights during the winter, didn't mean she had little experience. She definitely seemed outdone here, though. Despite it all she was having fun, tossing snowballs, getting hit by Freyd's snowballs, and having fun. "Whew, what a challenge!" She remarked. She was tied with the best of her hometown for skill in a snowball fight, but this player was something else. Suddenly, she was hit by a snowball, but she didn't see any way it could have come from Freyd...it also came from somewhere nearby and above? Astralin looked in the direction the snowball came from, and she saw a woman standing on one of the snow-covered, but sturdy limbs of a tree. "Care to have another contender?" The woman asked with a soft smile, and another snowball in her hand. Above the woman was a green cursor, so Astralin, while unsure, didn't seem too worried. Of course, she didn't know how she should answer that question...primarily because she needed to keep some focus on the opponent, and her back was now turned, leaving her somewhat vulnerable despite having a tree for cover. Freyd 0 Posted March 29, 2021 #16 Share Posted March 29, 2021 (edited) Their mission accomplished and their current social combat winding down, Freyd suddenly found himself with sword in hand again the moment a stray strike landed on Astralin from above. Instinct took over as the two conversed, and Freyd instantly made himself scarce. His form melded back into the shadows of another nearby tree, concealing him beneath its wide evergreen boughs. At least it smelled like pine. Some of the many other locations he'd previously had occasion to hide in were far less pleasant. Some also had previous occupants who hadn't taken well to his presence. 'Who was this newcomer,' he wondered, setting red eyes upon her features. She didn't look familiar, but was definitely another player. Stories of false flag traps came to mind, where someone with a green icon served as a disarming lure to draw unsuspecting players into a trap. He wouldn't abandon Astralin so lightly, but it paid to be cautious in this world. If nothing else, he maintained the secrecy of his identity. If things went south, he'd have the advantage when he came to his companions aid. Astralin 0 Posted March 29, 2021 Author #17 Share Posted March 29, 2021 There were no incoming Snowballs from Freyd. That couldn't be good. Astralin quickly looked towards the spot she saw him in last...the same thing happened when Astralin was about to fight the frost beast...was...was he hiding somewhere? Astralin looked at the surrounding area. Plenty of trees to hide behind, but... "I, um..." Astralin still didn't know how she should answer this woman. After all, they were meeting outside the safe zone, anything could happen and this person seemed to be on her own. The woman got down from the tree. "I apologize if I surprised you, you both looked like you were having a little fun. I go by Kihone. You?" She asked. "...A-Astralin. I go by Astralin..." Astralin replied, still a bit wary herself. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Astralin." Kihone then said. The awkward silence would be kind of unnerving to Astralin, but this woman seemed to be sweet in her demeanor. Freyd 0 Posted March 29, 2021 #18 Share Posted March 29, 2021 As the two conversed, Freyd watched the new arrival's body language, searching for cues on intent. There was nothing particularly threatening or alarming about her, but Freyd took that to mean that she might very well be practiced in her deceptions. Spending as much time as he did wandering the wilds of Aincrad alone, his default reactions were not especially open or friendly to the sudden appearance of strangers. He'd also had more than enough run-ins with orange-icon players to know that it would be foolish not to be cautious. Still, he chose to take a chance, if only to reassure his companion. Before stepping out from behind the tree, Freyd realized that he must look much like the very figures he would normally consider to be a threat. Montjoy, something more suitable please. Freyd's shadow enveloped him, altering his appearance to that of a young blond boy wearing a black track suit with a white scarf draped lazily around his neck and shoulders. Bright blue eyes and a cheerful expression replaced the usual stoic mask and piercing red gaze. Disguise could be such a wonderfully useful skill, if properly applied. He nodded subtly to Astralin confirming her unspoken suspicions. "Bit of an odd spot to be hanging around, isn't it Kihone?"
Astralin 0 Posted March 30, 2021 Author #19 Share Posted March 30, 2021 Astralin had never felt more alone yet surrounded in this moment. She would find that yet another player she didn't recognize stepped out into the open, and he nodded to her? What was that supposed to mean? The young blond male player then would speak to Kihone, claiming this was a bit of an "odd spot" to be hanging around. "I wander this floor often, so it's not really that odd to me. I can see why someone would see it as unusual though, if they don't often visit this floor, or meet the people who frequent it." Kihone responded. Astralin wondered what could have drawn this woman to just wander this floor often, but she couldn't come up with a clear answer, aside from possibly being a familiar or loved environment for the woman. Maybe she loved winter, or lived somewhere that was often cold or freezing? But the bigger question was, where was Freyd, and who was this boy who came out of the trees? Freyd 0 Posted March 30, 2021 #20 Share Posted March 30, 2021 (edited) "Hey, are you Astradin?" Freyd gauged from her dazed expression that she hadn't clued into his cue. "This spoopy guy just ran past me saying that he had to run: a guildmate or girlfriend n trouble, or sumthin'. Are you good here?" He eyed the newcomer with his best mix of feigned caring and total disinterest, flicking a bit of col into the air with his thumb, then catching it high mid-spin like some sort of flashy showman's gambit. Perhaps it was, in its own way. "Alrighty, then," he said with a exaggerated bow and too quickly for either of the women to answer. "I'm going back to hunting Purple Yeti! You two play nice and gentle, now!" His voice trailed off into the wind as he turned and wandered off into the blizzard, leaving too very stunned and confused players in his wake. Freyd was working on borrowed time, and his promise had been fulfilled. It was time to move onward and upward, where shadows and destiny were waiting. *** Thread Summary: Astralin receives: 2SP (1 page, +1 event) 400 col <<Essence of Steel>> [Unique Item]: Use to enhance one weapon, armor, or accessory and increase its rarity by one level.
