Freyd 0 Posted April 5, 2021 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2021 <<Bandit Camp>> His message was ready. Freyd had thought long and hard, debating whether to send it, but it was the right thing to do. There differences were immaterial, and things needed to work better if everyone was going to face a tougher, meaner world that seemed intent on swallowing every single player whole. To: ChaseR From: Freyd I bared my back in the raid and you let it be. It was a far closer thing than I even imagined, but you never took the shot, even with my permission. That's appreciated. You and I never mixed well, but we both know that we need to find a way to work together for the good of the frontlines, and everyone else we both care about. Meet me in Yogan Village on Floor Nine. They've tweaked the Bandit Camp quest and laid a handy easter egg inside that could benefit us both. Let's bury the hatchet in the back of a bunch of mobs and agree to move on, for everyone's sake. I hope you'll agree. Kirk gave him a glance that suggested he understood how personality clashed could ruin cooperation. Freyd just grimaced back, uncertain about whether the blue boi would accept. They history was far from clean, but he at least had to give it a chance. Plunking himself down on a nearby soot-covered stool, he ordered a cup of whatever thick sludge they passed for coffee around here and waited to see what would happen. *** @ChaseR Freyd | HP: 900/900 | EN: 124/124 | DMG: 27 | MIT: 66 | EVA: 3 | ACC: 6 | BH: 45 | LD: 4 | | FLN: 8 | HLY: 8 | V.O.: 90 Consumes: Crème Brûlée (Snack) | Accuracy 2 [172785] Liquor of Light (Potion) | Damage 3 [178030-2] Smores (Snack) | Evasion 2 [172801] Spoiler Freyd, Level: 31 Paragon Level: 60 HP: 900/900 EN: 124/124 Stats: Damage: 24 (+3) Mitigation: 66 Evasion: 1 (+2) Accuracy: 4 (+2) Battle Healing: 45 Loot Dice: 4 FLN: 8 HLY: 8 V.O.: 90 Equipped Gear: Weapon: Samael's Pride (T4-WH, VO 1, HOLY 1, FLN 1) Armor: Skirmisher's Garb (T3 LA, MIT 2, EVA 1) Misc: Night Shades (T3-Trinket, ACC 3) Skills: War Hammer R5 Light Armor R5 Searching R4 Battle Healing R5 Charge Energist Extended Weight Limit Active Mods: Large Pockets Ferocity Stamina Meticulous Resolve Inactive Mods: Active Extra Skills: Disguise Survival Meditation Forgotten King’s Authority Inactive Extra Skills: Battle Ready Inventory:Teleport Crystals: Gungnir: T3 Perfect HP Rec [Instant]: Mass HP Rec [Instant] (+30*Tier HP): Antidote 3: Housing Buffs: Rested: -1 energy cost for the first two expenditures of each combat Clean: The first time you would suffer DoT damage in a thread, reduce damage taken from DoT each turn by 20% (rounded down) Hard Working: +2 EXP per crafting attempt and +1 crafting attempt per day Filling: Increase the effectiveness of a single food item consumed in a thread by +1 T1 slot. ChaseR 0 Posted April 5, 2021 #2 Share Posted April 5, 2021 The last thing that Chase wanted on top of an update that was looking to wipe out what little gamer he'd managed to birth in himself, was Freyd. And there he was in all his glory, sliding right into his inbox and getting a groan out of him. He looked at the message for a short while, considering deleting it, maybe just opening it and closing it before he could read any of the garbage written down inside. His frustrations with Freyd were far back enough that he didn't even care about that much- he was more bothered with Raidou and the rest, considering how they handled the whole matter. And involved Mari into it, too. Menacingly glaring down the mail for a short while, he ended up making his mind and opening it up, reading it in full. Silence. He wasn't really sure what he could type in response, what to say and/or do. "... F-Fucking annoying, god damn it.", he grumbled in the back of his mind and made sure to equip his newly tiered up gear, grunting and exiting his estate as he began to move towards the ninth. And upon reaching the settlement, there he was, Zoro himself. "... There's plenty of monsters just as annoying as you. I wish you'd get out of the way, but that means more annoying monsters for me. Let's get this over with.", he growled lowly and huffed, knowing that just being angry at him all this time wouldn't cut it. And even though he did give Chase the chance to literally stab him in the back during the raid, he'd never take that route. Nobody was better left dead than alive, even if he wished there was an exception for him specifically, deep down inside. "They've changed the monkey quest too. Everything is different.", he tried to share what little he knew about the new system to Freyd, stuffing both of his hands in his jacket's pockets. "Any idea what the hell EXP is and how we get it?" Freyd 0 Posted April 6, 2021 Author #3 Share Posted April 6, 2021 (edited) He actually showed up. Some of the attitude was still there, but Freyd could see Chase making the attempt. That counted for something. 'Best to keep this business-like,' he thought to himself. A practiced nod greeted and recognized the blue-clad man's arrival. "Yeah, I'd heard about Donkey Kong Kaiju and some of the other quests. It sounds like they offer some useful skills, if you can figure out their Easter egg. EXP isn't much different than SP. Get quests, events and dungeons done and it'll start rolling in. These new paragon levels are kinda weird. Did you find that much changed for you?" Their banter was limited, but the fact that it was happening at all showed some promise. Getting the details for Kirk, the Foreman of the Mines, didn't take long. Both of them knew the lay of the land well enough, but the size of the bandit encampment was quite a bit larger than either recalled. A dozen tents, sprawled out of a large butte and surrounded by lava flows gave them good vantage and some added protection. It wouldn't matter much against the likes of them. Freyd raced in first calling hand what should have been a blade, but looked instead like a long black staff. It appeared like a slot in space, leading into the void, and somehow sealed by the thinnest of white auras. Leaping high, the Whisper crashed into the midst of the first camp, scattering their fire and dousing the who area in ashes. Anguished cries could be heard within, but the could masked the targets as much as it blinded them. Freyd was clearly still thinking that some his old mods applied, where they did not. ChaseR 0 Posted April 7, 2021 #4 Share Posted April 7, 2021 "English- what easter egg, what's a donkey kong and what's a katzoo?", he groaned and asked him, giving him a somewhat tired glance. At least it was easy to see that he himself wasn't being outright aggressive. Even if his attitude really was there after all, it was more so cause effort only gets you so far. The rest needed time, so here's to hoping the two got along well enough to make room for said time. The two were in combat before Chase could even understand it himself, looking at whatever Freyd made show up in his hand. Now there was a huge question that took precedence before anything else. "What in the mother of fuck happened to your sword?". His weapon still seemed the same- blue's, that is- as he launched an attack to the bandits, the light forming his blade only for the final slash, resulting in three bandits being wiped out. The survivor tried to take his chance and sneak an attack in, but Chase was able to move to the side at the last moment, groaning. "My armor is now cloth and we don't get SP but EXP, so skills are limited. Not sure what I can pull with this- our HP is tiny, too.", he kept the conversation going very idly, watching more bandits come out from the camps and rush towards the duo. Freyd 0 Posted April 8, 2021 Author #5 Share Posted April 8, 2021 (edited) Freyd chuckled softly. "Sorry. I forget that you were never much of a gamer. Don't worry about the references. As to the blade... I'm honestly not sure. I just looked like this the first time I summoned it. Gotta say, though," he spun the lightweight staff so easily that it swung too fast to make contact with the first bandit, who was living under some kind of lucky star. "Darnit!" One of the other bandits laughed in open mockery, only to get the butt end of the staff shoved into... no... through his face, then out the back of his head. Half of the man's upper torso was suctioned into the screeching morass of nothingness in Freyd's hands before the rest of his virtual mesh simply clattered to the ground and exploded into motes of light. "Oh, and it likes to do that," he added, as if there was any doubt. A couple of additional, lightning-quick jabs, parries and strikes took down two more bandits. Even 'lucky' looked about ready to wet his pants. ChaseR 0 Posted April 10, 2021 #6 Share Posted April 10, 2021 Chase had little to say. The game seemed to have become much more brutal (or at least made Freyd's attacks look like so), and it decided to switch his weapon up to whatever... that was. "I guess now we pick a god and pray until we're out alive.", he huffed and tried to use Galaxy Destroyer again, annoyed at the lack of a sword art triggering. What the fuck was wrong now? Ah... cooldowns. Not only skills, but also sword arts too. Who even thought up of this garbage- his inner ramblings had gotten started and there was absolutely nothing that could shut them down now. "God damn this stupid ass system, fine, I'll use the other stupid ass move I've got.", he groaned and instead attacked with Cyclone, hitting three out of four- the usual. The annoying part was that except for the one affected by his holy enhancement on top of the attack, noone suffered more than around half their health. Still standing, tall, strong and proud or what have you. "Piss off, what's up with this shit? Why are my attacks so weak now?", Chase dropped his head slightly, casually dodging the attacks of the three remaining bandits. Spoiler ChaseR uses Cyclone on Bandits! Freyd 0 Posted April 10, 2021 Author #7 Share Posted April 10, 2021 (edited) Sweeping in beside Chaser, Freyd's motions were more like shadow than ever before. The raid battle seemed to have affected him more than he realized, or else the system itself seemed to be supporting his shtick. "Yeah. Lots of change. Not sure why, in some cases, but it is what it is." Batting aside one bandit's blade, Freyd lunged and speared the mob's head with the butt end of his staff, whirling and launching at a second, nearby. The shower of fractals blinded it, fatally, as the blackness spun sideways and smashed him into pieces. Two more rushed in from opposite directions, only to underestimate the benefits of Freyd's extended reach. They never even made it into melee range before they were dropped like the rest. "Give yourself some time to figure it out. But what I've seen to date puts you in a tough spot. You've become accustomed to tanking and dealing damage, and might have to choose one over the other from this point forward." A dip from his cowl indicated another group of ruffians heading their way. "You'll get this. Just give it a bit of time." ChaseR 0 Posted April 13, 2021 #8 Share Posted April 13, 2021 Chase wasn't sure what bothered him the most. The fact he could see eye to eye with Freyd on this matter or how the system was designed specifically to mess him up. And now he had to change the way he played, just when he'd learned to get used to it- great. "Tsk, I'll figure a way to do my own thing.", he groaned and ran right towards the group, watching them try to lunge at the boy with stabs and slashes. He weaved between them all, spinning on his heels and doing what best acrobatics he could to dodge their attacks one after the other, before he planted his foot in the ground and slashed upwards at the final bandit, taking him out in a single hit. If he couldn't just spam his AoE attacks, he'd leave that much to Freyd. He could make sure to obliterate targets one by one in the meantime, at the very least. "How come you're still fine. You can do your shit normally.", he pointed out and gave him a glance as he slid over next to him, cocking an eyebrow curiously. How did he weasel around it again? Freyd 0 Posted April 13, 2021 Author #9 Share Posted April 13, 2021 (edited) Freyd sighed, internally, trying to avoid anything provocative while also doing his best to respond. ChaseR was frustrated. ChaseR was always frustrated, and he couldn't entirely blame him. "The short answer is: I have no idea." His companion swung his heavier blade around, decimating one of the bandits and shattering it into a thousand pieces. "Seems to work just fine from here." Moving in beside him, Freyd altered his grip, sliding each hand to the thirdway points on the shaft. Twisting hand over hand, the weapon spun to catch four surrounding bandit off guard. Their forms collided with each other popping like glass baubles in the process. "Maybe it has something to do with why my weapon changed. I had always focused on raw damage dealing potential. You tried to balance attack and defense. Whatever happened after the raid, it might have affected you differently. No one really knows for certain what has happened." ChaseR 0 Posted April 16, 2021 #10 Share Posted April 16, 2021 His single targets were still all the same, and Freyd's AoEs were too- it probably was what he was thinking, the weapon made the difference. "So I can't keep going the same way I could before.", he quietly concluded himself, not sure what else to say other than to decimate the bandits before him. With only two stepping up to the duo, he raised his sword in the air and brought it down, cutting one in half before taking a stab from a dagger right to his stomach. He wasn't sure if the older version of this quest would be able to damage him, but this had. A, funny enough, miniscule amount of damage, too. Maybe he still could tank as well as he could attack. His agility hadn't taken that much a hit and his defenses seemed to be higher than before, but so did the damages of the mobs around them. More test runs would be needed, he'd have to go around Aincrad questing again, just when he thought he put an end to that whole story. Freyd 0 Posted April 17, 2021 Author #11 Share Posted April 17, 2021 (edited) Freyd looked at ChaseR, his expression one of confusion as he struggled with the concept of compassion for the man's plight. Empathy did not come naturally, but this one could be sorted out deductively. ChaseR had never been a gamer, and seemed to be struggling to explain the recent changes in SAO's environment. "It might depend on the quest," he offered, as if trying to offer a non-technical response. "I'm hearing rumours of new and different challenges emerging all over the castle." Reaching out with a quick lunge, Freyd snared the last remaining bandit's clothing, twisting his staff to lock the fabric and then swinging him up into the air and overhead, Bam-Bam styles. It only took one swing to shatter the mob, both men sensing the telltale signs of a sword art empowering the blow. "Give yourself some time. You've always been a good tank. I'm sure that you'll be able to figure it out." "What the hell is going on out here?!" Both men turned to see a burly-looking thug, looking both cross and terrified at the prospect that so many members of his gang had been decimated by the pair. ChaseR 0 Posted April 20, 2021 #12 Share Posted April 20, 2021 There wasn't much for Chase to say to the compliments he was met with. He quietly looked at Freyd, before turning to the burlier thug that took a dagger out, gripping it tightly in his hand. "Seems to be the chief.", he groaned and clenched his sword just as tight as the thief wielded his own blade, checking his list of sword arts and going for the strongest one he could muster without the cooldowns getting in the way. He lunged towards the boss, who stood his ground and gracefully dodged any attempt at the boy's attack landing over missing its mark. He dodged and dodged, and when Chase finally gave up, he attempted to sneak in his own barrage of attacks. Chase just repeated the same maneuvers the thief had, struggling to get out of the situation before he got the both's blades to meet, sending them skidding a bit farther back. "This guy is very fast, careful.", he warned Freyd and looked over his shoulder, giving him the nod to go right back in and try landing a hit for himself. Spoiler ChaseR charges with Astral Hell! Freyd 0 Posted April 24, 2021 Author #13 Share Posted April 24, 2021 (edited) Freyd broke left, silently sending his shadow mongoose familiar around in the opposite direction. The intention had been to catch their opponent in a pincer maneuver, devastating the thug between them. As usual, fate intervened and Freyd slipped on a suddenly loose patch of soot-covered gravel. His swing went high and wide, missing its mark, while poor Persi got a fist in the face for her trouble. She hissed and scampered off under a nearby rock, giving her master just enough time to scramble back to his feet. "Cardinal still has it in for me. Every f-ing time I try to charge, something like that seems to happen!" Freyd's frustration bled through, even as he moved to resume and recover his attack. There would be more opportunities to strike soon enough. For now, he settled with circling around to the boss' far side, flanking him with ChaseR. "Looks like you've still got his attention. ChaseR 0 Posted June 2, 2021 #14 Share Posted June 2, 2021 Throughout this fight, this was the most tense moment. Just when the stakes were getting higher, it felt like all time had stopped and Chase was just staring the boss down for a couple weeks, hell, a month even, wondering what to do. But he finally broke out of it, sighing and giving a quiet glance at Freyd. "Why do I feel like I've seen this play out again?", he asked and with a glance back at the boss, he gripped his sword, starting to charge right towards it. Although the boss began to hop away, the bluehead managed to close the gap alarmingly fast, tightening his grip and swinging his sword forwards with both hands. Just when his attack would miss, almost miraculously at the last moment the blade stretched out of thin air, the blinding light slashing through the Boss- but it was a shallow wound. Hell, he even felt some resistance when he delivered his attack, gritting his teeth and doing all he could to drive it out the other way. "Th-This guy won't die easy." Freyd 0 Posted June 2, 2021 Author #15 Share Posted June 2, 2021 (edited) Spotting ChaseR's last-minute strike, Freyd dove forward and tumbled past the reeling mob, ending his roll crouched low to the ground. Bracing himself forward against his weapon, pressing it firmly into the ground. The far end struck out past his back at a sharp angle, right in the line of the bandit boss' movement. A fearful scream was all their foe managed as the barely perceptible ward around the void peeled back to expose the vacuum within. The banshee's wail followed as all of the surrounding air was sucked in. Propelled and off balance, the mob could not avoid the set spike and impaled itself so thoroughly that the stick stuck out from its back. A slight exhale from Freyd relaxed the pent up tension of the move. Crouching left, he pulled the bandit beneath him and silently slipped his staff from the wicked wound in the man's torso, slapping his face with the far end of the weapon for added injury even as he regained his own footing a few feet away. ChaseR could practically see the calculus at work behind the Whisper's eyes. It was a move executed with deliberate and meticulous precision, and delivered exactly as intended. Twin red irises flicked in his direction, as if waiting for the next wave of their assault to begin. "Perhaps not, but against the both of us he'll die just the same." ChaseR 0 Posted June 3, 2021 #16 Share Posted June 3, 2021 That was not really what Chase wanted to hear from someone he considered enough of a threat to not trust on his own. If the point of them coming together was to slowly befriend one another again, then being this aggressive and bloodthirsty wasn't a way to convince him. He wanted to comment on it. To start screeching at Freyd again, but he wouldn't. He let out a drawn out sigh once more and pinched the bridge of his nose, watching the boss silently and just going along the rotation, diving in and slashing again. Another wide hit at the chest and it was left stunned completely, as Chase turned to look at his (current) partner again. "... You're up.". There was a bit more tension but the silence worked for getting rid of it and not strengthening it, funny enough. He'd be able to tell by now that the boy meant to comment on him and just did all his power not to. A... topic shift, as much as he hated it, would help. "... Freyd 0 Posted June 3, 2021 Author #17 Share Posted June 3, 2021 (edited) Freyd watched his companion's body language as the battle continued, unabated. ChaseR's posture was still tense. His jaw still clenched without provocation. Whatever went through his mind that seemed to feed the boys anger at everything seemed to be seething, still, but at least he managed it enough not to be flapping his gums with accusations. Progress? Montjoy's question seemed premature. Freyd didn't even bother to glance at his own shadow, or dignify the thought with a response. They still had a battle to win, and the ire between him and ChaseR had proven too burdensome in the past. The whole point of this was to bury it, once and for all. He mulled the man's question over for a second, being careful to avoid an overly techie response. That ChaseR still struggled with base concepts of the game this many years on still baffled him, but pointing it out wouldn't do either of them any good. "I... don't do much else." It was a fair admission. "Some people like to focus on their crafts. Others worry more about their appearances. I figure stuff out, exploring and the like. It's just what I do, I guess." He shrugged, even as his strike spun the mob around a full three-hundred and sixty degrees. It was hard to determine whether his strikes were just brutally effective or just casually delivered because of excessive practice. "Are you finding things harder?" There was no mockery in his tone, just genuine curiosity. ChaseR 0 Posted June 4, 2021 #18 Share Posted June 4, 2021 Chase was able to tell. He didn't take that in an aggressive or mocking way, instead groaning and trying to deliver an attack to the agile bandit. He parried the strike with the knife he was wielding before hopping back to dodge what could have been from a larger sword (one not broken like blue's), and attempted to stab the vanguard. He managed to dodge the hit, just barely avoiding getting scraped if not worse by the lunge forwards, looking away from both their enemy and Freyd. "I lag behind a lot. I don't do well with systems and this thing... the cooldowns and things confuse me. And I was just starting to learn how to operate the previous system, finally. I'd made a small library on my basement, with all the systems so I can help understand them better. But now it's useless. Freyd 0 Posted June 8, 2021 Author #19 Share Posted June 8, 2021 (edited) A quizzical expression affixed itself to Freyd's pale face. "Well... kind of all the time, actually. I certainly wasn't anyone of note, but I'd made enough of a splash to gather the interest of my fellow nerds." Dipping low, Freyd swept his legs in behind those of the beleaguered bandit, knocking them out from beneath him. Landing with a breathless *oof*, the mob struggled to manage a curse even as the Whisper returned the butt end of his staff into the middle of his chest. The mesh pressed in, creating an unnatural concave cavity that no ribcage should be capable of enduring. The mob's eyes bulged comically large while his limbs splayed outward from the force of the blow. "I signed on out of professional interest. And when Kayaba played out his grand reveal..." He pursed his lips. "Let's just say that I took it a little too personally." Spinning and tucking his weapon neatly under his left arm, holding it tight with his elbow, Freyd signaled to ChaseR to finish the job. ChaseR 0 Posted June 9, 2021 #20 Share Posted June 9, 2021 It made sense for anyone and everyone to take being chained to some virtual world without their permission personally. Who would even want this in the first place? It could sound good, if they didn't just flat out die. Then again, can that work in a game? The answer is obvious, but as far as bluehead is concerned, a shrug is the most positive answer one can get out of him. His expression became slightly more stern as he let out a sigh and looked back at the boss, seeing it barely still alive with any health. Chase ran in and slashed once, twice, three times, missing one after the other before the boss slashed at him, hitting him once on the arm and then managing to run his dagger into the boy's shoulder. Although he jumped back, it was too late and he was already almost half of his health down. What the fuck happened this update or whatever it was that changed Aincrad so much? "... Half my health?
