Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #21 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Delving deeper into the eerily quiet caves, Freyd spared himself a few moments to rest and recover. Exhaustion was far more of a problem than it used to be, and the use of sword arts more draining. Fortunately, the caves were not heavily populated and there seemed to be no wandering mobs. Peering down through a series of bridges and stone spans, he spotted a wider open area at the bottom of the pit. Something lurked and shuffled down there, and was likely the beast at the end of the dungeon. "Maybe it'll have better loot?" He whispered his words to an unimpressed mongoose, though that seemed to be her default expression these days. He was struggling not to agree. Surely, there had to be someplace in the game that was still worthwhile grinding. From a purely business-based perspective, it was going to be difficult to do much for the community if he couldn't find items to identify. Shrugging off the dour thoughts for a later time, Freyd rested and watched his cooldowns tick down. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #22 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) When he felt that his resources had restored themselves to a sufficient extent to press on, Freyd got to his feet and stretched. As odd as it was, Freyd felt like he was in his element while crawling through the bowels of this world in search of whatever next threat lay before him. Some players found comfort in their crafts. Others tried to replicate some facet of their lives in the real world, simulating a false sense of normalcy in their current, digital reality. Others still, just went mad. Freyd threw himself into his self-appointed work: to end threats and clear a path forward. He once described himself to Mari as Aincrad's janitor. It was an accurate moniker, despite its absurdity. All he needed to know at the moment was that there was something down below - a mess that needed cleaning. Readied, he resumed his advance into the depths, looking for the next challenge to confront. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #23 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Spotting the monstrous troll from above, Freyd chose an unorthodox approach and jumped from the stone span upon which he was standing. Falling like a meteor, he landed upon his unsuspecting victim, feeling it crumple beneath him even as he tumbled off to the side and regained his footing. Imagining a giant bump and bruise with a pair of circling stars and tweety-bird appearing around its head, Freyd was sufficiently gratified to see the thing dazed and wobbling unsteadily. It raked at the ranks of shadows flitting across its face, finding no purchase, yet offering Montjoy considerable gratification. Darting around to its side, Freyd spared only a moment to register the scores of bones littering every inch of the cavern floor. This thing was clearly the boss, and he was eager to take it down. Planting his staff firmly on the ground, he used it as a fulcrum to build momentum for his body, which pivoted and drove both feet squarely into the troll's back, sending it sprawling. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #24 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) The opportunity he sought suddenly laid bare before him, Freyd followed up by charging the unbalanced boss. Grasping Samael's Pride by one end, he spun with full force, unleashing a massive wave of force that caught the creature dead centre in the chest. The troll actually became airborne, and careened backwards, slamming into the cave wall with enough power to partially imprint itself. It's health took a nose dive into the yellow range and the thing's crumpled form sat idle for several moments as it struggled to recover from the fury unleashed upon it. Shaking its head a few times, it dislodged itself from the wall, grabbing a large hunk of stone and whipping it at the Whisper. Dodging like the shadows he controlled, Freyd was already on the far side of the room by the time the rock sailed harmless past its intended point of impact. The troll roared in frustration. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #25 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Please with the power unleashed by his new toy, Freyd followed up with another straight run, arcing into a series of acrobatic spins that unleashed a series of vicious blows against the boss. It fell back into its own imprint, driven even deeper by the repeated strikes even as a series of web-like fractures spread across its badly battered chest. Freyd swore that he saw the mesh momentarily cave in before springing back out again like an empty plastic water desperately trying to maintain its intended shape. "Stay down sparky! This will be over, real soon." Spinning his staff around him, he locked it level with the ground behind his back, waiting for the troll to make the next move. Wrenching one clawed hand free at a time, the creature's beady black eyes flared to greater heights of anger as it launched itself at the source of its irritation. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #26 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Hunching itself down on all fours, the troll seemed convinced that a more feral approach might work. Freyd's analytical mind, meanwhile, was already calculating every potential vector for its attack and preparing counters for each contingency. The death stick spun and struck the troll upon its left temple even as it made a desperate charge towards the man in black who had caused it so much anguish. Its head detached, sailing sideways and exploding into a fancy puff of brilliant light even as its body continued forward. Its pace slowed, and then stopped completely, as the headless corpse collapsed to the floor, sending a sweeping wave of fractals outward. They washed over Freyd even as he held the final pose of his fatal strike, his eyes intent and focused on the precision of motion that had been required. Checkmate. Montjoy stood, arms folded across his silhouetted form, on the far side of the cave, satisfied with their combined performance. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #27 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Dusting off the motes, even as they disappeared from the folds in his clothing, Freyd eyed the return path back to the dungeon's exit. "I think that we can consider this to be a successful test." Montjoy followed on a nearby wall, silently nodding his agreement. Retracing their steps, they soon found themselves back in the caverns of the underdark on floor twenty-three. The marker stones remained, but no longer blazed with the intensity that they had when first approached. The dungeon had been cleared, at least for now. The janitor had done his job, once more. Perhaps fortune had smiled on him, but Freyd felt validated by his success. Despite the increased danger and difficulty following the recent update, he still seemed capable. "The next raid boss won't be so forgiving," he told himself. "Best not to get cocky." Persi sauntered up to his side and hopped up onto his shoulder, perching herself with perfect balance in the way that only a weightless thing could. Her eyes seemed satisfied at his performance. That was high praise. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #28 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Setting his sights on returning to Kalanaes, Freyd ventured back into the open wilds of the underdark. It always reminded him of the depths of floor twenty-one, though there were clear distinctions. The other had been eroded away by water. Its walls and mineral formations were riddled with muck made solid that also gave it a more melted appearance. These caverns were simply voids in the geology, some still carved by waterways, but more likely the result of ancient magma flows from volcanoes long since vanished. As he pondered the geographical distinctions in his mind, Freyd felt the growing vibrations in the cave floor. He shelved the mental comparison for later review, wondering at the source of the pounding upon the stone foundations of the floor. It rounded the corner a moment later, large, black, unrecognizing eyes staring in Freyd's direction without awareness. Ugzeke had respawned. "Should we have another go," Freyd asked his shadow, a hint of mirth in his voice. Yes, of course. For science. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #29 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Even Persi got in on the fun. Lancing outward from Freyd's form, the feline-like familiar spazzed and sprawled open into a miasmic black cloud of teeth and claws that latched onto the new Ugzeke and promptly started tearing him apart. Freyd followed up with his own series of strikes, but was no match for Persi's fury. She's earned her reputation for devouring field bosses, and seemed eager to repeat or sustain the actions that had earned her that title. Ugzeke was too dumbfounded to put up any protest, wondering instead why the dark caverns had suddenly become so much darker. "Nicely done, girl, but don't forget to leave some for the rest of us!" Tufts of greenish-white hair flew from the giant troll's head, even as he toppled onto his backside under the tiny terror's assault. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #30 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Reaching up to draw the inky blackness from its face gave Freyd the opening he wanted. Persi skittered away at his warning, even as he shattered most of the troll's left arm with his subsequent barrage of blows. The troll raged, having forgotten about him completely as it focused on the feisty familiar. By the time it remembered his presence, Freyd had a legion of shadows swelling in numbers in the surrounding darkness. They all swept onto the field of battle at once, overwhelming the beleaguered troll that flailed helplessly against the onslaught. Make one man an army. Not bad, Freyd. This little trick of yours seems to be more useful than others originally thought. Wrapping up the tide of darkness with a few more well-placed hits, Freyd settled into his stance once more as he readied for the next assault. Ugzeke moaned and whispered, then did the very last thing that Freyd ever expected from a field boss: he ran. Charging after the fleeing titan, Freyd smashed one end of his staff into the ground, unleashing a rippling, seismic wave in front of him. Traveling much faster than the troll, it caught him almost instantly and shattered the stone beneath his feat, sending both him and the a shower of razor-sharp shards flying upward several dozen feet. Ugzeke landed hard, and awkwardly on his chest, performing the waterless version of a belly flop and taking a decent beating in the process. "You leave me 'lone!!!" Ugzeke's deep, throaty voice bellowed and echoed across the cavern walls, his angry pleading sounding almost child-like, despite the loudness of his uncontrolled volume. "Sorry boss. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #32 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Freyd followed up with a high leap, whirling wide and launching a series of stalactites at the fleeing troll, piercing his thick hide with a wave of shrapnel. Ugzeke swung, blindly, and miraculously slapped Freyd from the air during his descent, hurtling him into the nearby wall. Winded and sore, the Whisper picked himself up and shook his head clear as a field of stars kept obscuring his sight. "That might have been worse if there were others involved." Mob AoE attacks were rarely as effective when confronting single targets. It was a rare and welcome break, and gave him time to recover while resuming his onslaught. This Ugzeke was desperate and fearful. It was an unusual set of characteristics for a field boss, but presented new challenges. Other than the tactical differential that followed, Freyd cared no more or less about the mob itself. He'd seen the perils of having too much sympathy for hostile mobs in the various encounters involving the Sundered Spire. He'd avoid harming those that stayed friendly and clear of his path. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #33 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Seeming to fold into himself, several copies of Freyd emerged and danced synchronously across the battlefield. Their blows struck simultaneously from different directions, crushing Ugzeke's form with another series of battering blows. The troll didn't even notice. He was too fixated on a shiny crystal glimmering on the cavern ceiling. Freyd was fine with it. Practicing combat moves and maneuvers on an oblivious meat bag mob had its benefits too, though it tended to feel less rewarding in the moment. Sometimes, whittling down a witless foe was the right solution to letting loose the tensions and stresses of the day. There was also filler to consider, and this suited just fine. Ugzeke's health hit yellow. He was halfway down and just needed the proper nudging to plummet through the rest. Freyd was glad to assist with that, and pressed his attack, sensing that the field boss' rage mode was likely just around the corner. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #34 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Finishing his latest kata with a flaring twist that compressed the power of his motions into a single focused point, Freyd lunged and tapped the tip of his staff into the trolls abdomen. The results were completely contrary to expectations, sending the beast hurtling backwards with the full force of a hurricane. Bits of sharp rock protruded awkwardly from Ugzeke's broken form, where he fell, but his resilience was so great that he simply shrugged it off. Holes healed, though only to maintain the integrity of his digital form. His health remained low and made no effort to trickle upwards against expectations. Oddly enough, trolls didn't seem to have much in the way of regenerative powers in this world. It was a fact that always struck him as odd, but he was also glad for it and so simply dismissed the notion as a convenient oversight or choice that made them easier to defeat. Freyd 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Author #35 Share Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) Persi had slunk away while Freyd managed his maneuvers, and positioned herself within the troll's own shadow. As he rose and pulled himself free from the improvised stalagmite-based iron maiden that had just impaled him, she literally went ape-shit on his ass. Howling in surprise, Ugzeke danced around like an idiot trying to put his combusted pants out while Freyd came hurtling at him from the dark. *WHAP* *THUD* Where Ugzeke's back had just recently been perforated, his front now suffered the same fate, and it was not very pretty. Even Montjoy seemed to cringe and recoil at the sight. A yellow bar turned red, even as Freyd relentlessly pounded him further into the ground. The troll's face kept burrowing deeper and deeper into the rock face with every blow, staring blankly into the distance, and likely wondering how the start of a beautiful new day had gone so very, very wrong. Freyd 0 Posted May 2, 2021 Author #36 Share Posted May 2, 2021 (edited) Steam started to rise from the punctured troll's skin as the already red flesh struggles to contain the volcano of rage building up within. Up in a flash, the beast grabbed the exposed end of Freyd's weapon and used it to slam him back and forth, in full Flintstone's Bam-Bam glory. Battered, but not necessarily shaken, Freyd twisted in the giant's grasp and managed a swift strike to compel his release. Landing with cat-like grace, he slipped below the flailing troll's defenses and lashed out repeatedly. Duplicate shadows spread out in all direction, some caused by the ambient light sources of the underdark - various phosphorescent mosses and magical crystals lining the walls - while the balance were given form and will by Freyd alone. Montjoy led this shadow legion, drawing away attacks and distracting their foe so that the Whisper could inflict further damage. An unceremonious stick strike between Ugzeke's legs prompted another howl, even as Freyd rolled clear and made ready to end this fight, for good. Freyd 0 Posted May 2, 2021 Author #37 Share Posted May 2, 2021 (edited) Emerging from his roll, Freyd planted his staff hard against the looming wall face before him. It flared a brilliant white, unleashing a crackling wave of energy that chased every crack and fissure in the stone and split them further apart. *SNAP* *CRACK* The entire rock face broke loose and clamored down onto the startled field boss, burying him in a tidal wave of granite that lacerated every inch of the mob's flesh as it swept over, and then through him. The telltale sign of a puffy blue cloud of fractal shards confirmed the mob's demise. They had defeated Ugzeke a second time in the same day. Freyd was pleased, even as Persi slunk back under his vest and Montjoy reattached himself to his master's form. "A very successful test," Freyd added, staring at the weapon in his hands. "Very successful indeed. This should work out quite nicely. We'll need to try some group content and see how it fares, but today's exercise can be brought to a close." Freyd 0 Posted May 2, 2021 Author #38 Share Posted May 2, 2021 (edited) Returning to the Dark Elf city of Kalanaes, Freyd felt the sentries' eye upon him while still far from the walls. The locals didn't like strangers, and liked players even less. Tolerance for his presence was likely driven more by his usefulness, as he'd made a bit of a name for himself by repeatedly clearing out troublesome mobs in the outlying cavern network. A few of the drow even spared him a nod as he re-entered. He returned them, in the same spirit. The Dark Elf council still held a lot of sway in town, though he truly suspected Lun'Rael's hand was behind it. Every indication pointed to her presence as the secret will behind the twisted agenda of the Sundered Spire. He had no idea whether the faction still existed, or if her part in their story had been rewritten. It begged for investigation, but his time was currently limited due to other commitments. It was another task left to perform, on a seemingly endless list of equally important chores. Edited May 16, 2021 by Freyd
Freyd 0 Posted May 2, 2021 Author #39 Share Posted May 2, 2021 (edited) "Never a dull day in the janitorial division." Montjoy glanced sideways at him, but also shared the sentiment. Making their way through the city's twisted lanes and tiny plazas, Freyd was reminded that the elves had fled here from the surface. This city had been cobbled together from scratch. Whatever their history, and regardless of blame, these people had endured quite a lot. Their faces all bore the marks of hardship, whether gaunt from hunger, sallow-eyes from exhaustion, or simply hunched beneath the oppressive demands of their leadership. They had not buckled. Few others could make the same claim, though there were rare NPCs who had suffered worse. The people of floor thirteen came to mind. Somehow their faith had carried them through an apocalypse, and they continued to struggle and strive. Freyd felt at home amongst them. Whether here in Kalanaes, in Angel's Point, or any number of equally endangered point of light. He was glad to belong. Edited May 16, 2021 by Freyd
Freyd 0 Posted May 2, 2021 Author #40 Share Posted May 2, 2021 Reaching the central plaza, he wasted no time and touched his palm to the teleportation portal at its centre, emerging in the matching plaza at the heart of Angel's Point. Dark stone changed to white limestone, and the ominous dark ceilings of the underdark caverns gave way to a rare blue sky above his adopted digital home. Quaestor called to him as he approached the monastery walls. the rest of the Madrigal had apparently gathered for lunch and called over for him to join them. "In a minute! I just have to let Quip and Dingo know that I haven't died yet!" "Bring them over too!" Miri's lilting voice carried through the air like song, even as she lovingly clutched to her husband's arm. Rallying his friends, Freyd failed to suppress a smile as he joined them in his neighbour's tiny shop. They would likely make a tremendous mess of the place, and when it was all over he would help clean it up. That was what he did, and what he would always do. *** Thread Summary: 7,303 EXP (1600 pages, 4000 [2*T4 field bosses], 1500 [T3 dungeon wave #3 only], +3% for Paragon 10) 106,335 col (104,475 from Loot, 1,150 from Wave #3 dungeon reward, 730 from Laurel Wreath) 131 materials (16 from loot, 115 from Wave #3 dungeon reward) 2* Troll Blood (defeated Ugzeke twice) T3 Rare Weapon [191517a] T3 Uncommon Consumable [191517b] T3 Uncommon Consumable [191543] T3 Rare Trinket [191544] T3 Uncommon Consumable [191549] T3 Perfect Weapon [191550] T3 Perfect Trinket [191553a] T3 Perfect Weapon [191553b] T3 Rare Weapon [191555a] T3 Uncommon Consumable [191555b] T3 Perfect Armor/Shield [191560a] T3 Perfect Weapon [191560b] T3 Perfect Weapon [191560c] T3 Rare Trinket [191573] Eligible for US roll Unique Skill Roll 192981 - Craft: 6 Loot:
