Quest Rewards:

  • Any materials and loot that you find/gather.

Requirements:

  • None.

Summary:

Beneath the Black Iron Palace in the Town of Beginnings lay a hidden dungeon that wasn’t discovered until recently. The revelation of its existence came as a shock to the Players of Aincrad, who had tirelessly scoured the first floor since the game’s debut. Had they simply overlooked it during their investigations? Or had it sat in waiting for the opportune moment to present itself?

Once it was discovered, a scout team was sent in to investigate. The first few levels were fairly easy, but the difficulty ramped up rapidly. After encountering a trap room that locked them inside and disabled Teleport Crystals, two members of the party were killed, and the survivors were consequently forced to turn back. Ever since, it has been seen as taboo for all but the most powerful of warriors to venture into its depths. Even then, it is stressed that survival is not guaranteed.

Outline:

The Black Iron Dungeon is an atypical dungeon that hosts powerful mobs, dangerous traps, and untold treasures. The Black Iron Dungeon holds multiple levels, descending downwards.

Loot earned within the dungeon will be tiered to the Black Iron Dungeon's Level number (Level B1 = Tier 1 loot, Level B2 = Tier 2 loot, etc). Standard loot tables apply when looting mobs/bosses. Maps looted from monsters in the Black Iron Dungeon will open on any floor currently available and the dungeon's tier will scale to that floor.

New levels will be unlocked at each new tier in Sword Art Online. See the following for specific details of each level.

  Hide contents

[LEVEL B1]
Unlocked instantly.

Standard Mobs present here will have varying stats that adhere to the following parameters:

  • HP: 20 ~ 200
  • DMG: 6 ~ 60

B1 Trap: The player steps on a panel. As the panel sinks into the floor, arrows will rain upon the party from above, dealing 50 unmitigatable damage. Players with three slots of EVA in their armor will be nimble enough to avoid damage, while Players with three slots of MIT will witness the arrows harmlessly bounce off of them.

B1 Boss Monster will adhere to the following parameters:

  • HP: 1000
  • DMG: 120
  • EVA: 1
  • ACC: 1

[LEVEL B2]
Unlocked at Tier 2.

Standard Mobs present here will have varying stats that adhere to the following parameters:

  • HP: 220 ~ 400
  • DMG: 66 ~ 120

B2 Trap: The floor beneath the Players shifts, creating a downward slope where the path was once level. Only once the floor has pitched will the Players realize it is slicked with some sort of mysterious oil. They’ll slide helplessly down the ramp and into a shallow pool of viscous ooze, which covers their bodies and reduces their mobility. EVA and ACC are reduced by 2 for the next combat encounter, and Sword Arts will cost an additional 2 EN each until the fight has concluded.

B2 Boss Monster will adhere to the following parameters:

  • HP: 1500
  • DMG: 180
  • MIT: 50
  • EVA: 1
  • ACC: 1

[LEVEL B3]
Unlocked at Tier 3.

Standard Mobs present here will have varying stats that adhere to the following parameters:

  • HP: 420 ~ 600
  • DMG: 126 ~ 180

B3 Trap: The corridor suddenly becomes pitch black, filled with a darkness so palpable the Players can practically feel it. As though pulled along like a puppet by invisible strings, a Boss Monster will lumber into view, shambling toward the Players like a predator with prey in its sights. Seemingly immobilized by the sudden onset of the darkness, the Players won’t regain mobility until the Boss Monster has reached them, forcing them to fight.

B3 Boss Monster will adhere to the following parameters:

  • HP: 2000
  • DMG: 240
  • MIT: 75
  • EVA: 1
  • ACC: 2

[LEVEL B4]
Unlocked at Tier 4.

Standard Mobs present here will have varying stats that adhere to the following parameters:

  • HP: 620 ~ 800
  • DMG: 186 ~ 240

B4 Trap: Shackles erupt from the floor and walls of the corridor and bind the Player that tripped the trap. A surge of electricity runs along the length of the chains and into the Player, instantly reducing their HP to red (25%). The energy will arc to all surrounding Players, inflicting 50% of the damage dealt to the target Player as unmitigatable damage. The ruckus will attract five nearby loot minimum mobs, who will attack the Players on the following post.

B4 Boss Monster will adhere to the following parameters:

  • HP: 2500
  • DMG: 300
  • MIT: 100
  • EVA: 1
  • ACC: 2
  • Immune to Debuffs.

Exploration

Every fifth post (post #5, post #10, post #15, etc.) within this dungeon requires a roll for LD, even when in the middle of combat against standard mobs. This LD can only be influenced with the Searching Skill and/or Scouting Familiar and/or Nimble Cloth Armor Mod. This roll does not require a Post Action, but must be performed separately and after all other rolls within the post. In the event that the Player(s) are already engaged with a Boss Monster, Chest Room, or Trap, they are exempted from this roll.

LD Result Outcome
[1] Boss Monster encounter.
[2] Trap encounter.
[3 - 18] Nothing happens.
[19+] Chest Room encounter.

When opening a Chest in the Black Iron Dungeon, roll for natural CD and LD. LD may only be modified by the Lock Picking Skill and/or a Scouting Familiar. If your CD is 7 or lower, the chest will be empty. The room will lock and trap the Player(s) inside, disabling Flee mechanics as well as Teleport Crystals. When the room locks, the walls will open to reveal 10 mobs with stats relative to the maximum the Dungeon Level you are on permits. In the event that your CD is 8 or higher, the chest will produce loot as normal in accordance with the natural LD.

LD Result Rewards
[1 - 4] (Dungeon Level * 1000) col, (Dungeon Level * 3) Materials.
[5 - 8] (Dungeon Level * 2000) col, (Dungeon Level * 5) Materials.

Bonus EXP

Players can potentially receive bonus EXP for each page completed or Boss Monster killed within the Black Iron Dungeon, provided they are interacting with the floor corresponding with their own Tier. This bonus EXP is progressively unlocked as the Player completes Sword Art Online’s quest content, with the exception of these quests:

  • Making Vows
  • Saying Vows
  • Breaking Vows
  • Nature's Treasure
  • Redemption
  • Black Iron Dungeon

The Bonus EXP breakdown is as follows:

  • 50 quests completed:
    • Boss Monster = Current Highest Floor * 100 EXP
    • Page Completion = Player Tier * 75 EXP (in addition to standard page rewards)
  • 75 quests completed:
    • Boss Monster = Current Highest Floor * 200 EXP
    • Page Completion = Player Tier * 125 EXP (in addition to standard page rewards)
  • 100% of quests completed:
    • Boss Monster = Current Highest Floor * 300 EXP

There had been too many rumors of the supposed Black Iron Dungeon floating around. Tales of harrowing traps and bountiful rewards had floated to Shield's ears. However, for now, they were mainly just that: rumors. Info brokers had very little information, and the information they had was pieced together from - likely embellished - firsthand accounts by flustered players. Aside from the obvious loot benefits of such risky ventures, Shield wanted to be able to add to the accounts to hopefully add information and credibility from a seasoned front-liner. A second seasoned front-liner would only add to the credibility, and Shield knew who he wanted to bring along. As he ventured down to the Town of Beginnings from the mountains outside of Taft, wandering down mountains whose inhabitants no longer posed a threat to him, bustling through city streets, teleporting between hubs, and finally migrating down into the underbelly of the first floor, Shield finally began to see parts of Aincrad that were entirely new to him. As he walked, he wrote.

To: Freyd

Finally heading down under the first floor to see what all of the fuss is about. I'll clear a path down to the fourth sub-floor where the challenges are scaled to our levels. If you're interested, meet me there by noon.

- Shield

Though not without their pitfalls, the first three basement floors (as they had been dubbed by the brokers) were of no real consequence, easily bypassed. The few gremlins and goblins that did attempt to ambush Shield quickly died to his defenses, and, to nobody's surprise, did not drop any useable loot. He sighed at the fifth empty loot window that appeared before him, dismissing it and turning the last corner of the dreary dungeon corridor to face a stairway down with a bold roman numeral "IV" above the opening.

"I think I've found my stop." He made camp momentarily, sitting on an empty crate and looking through his stores of consumables. Sadly, all of them were designed for players of a lower tier. "Useable, but not quite up to snuff for what likely is down there." He took out the newly reforged Manticore Mask, dousing it with the contents of one of the bottles of Immolation Potion he had leftover from his last trip to the local merchant. "Used to be able to source these myself, but I guess those days are done. Oh well."

Freshly returned from another troll hunt, Freyd sat and quietly sipped his tea on the shores of the Lake of Reflections.  Coral had recovered from the damage of the Battle of Cratered Lake, and the locals recalled little to nothing of the events that had devastated their town in the first place.  That suited him just fine.  He was still making notes in his records on field bosses when Shield's message popped up.

"The Black Iron Dungeon.  Hrm."  Persi's ears perked up from the far side of the table, where she'd been lapping at a bowl of ether.  They were frequent visitors to this place, it being so close to the guild hall, and the shop owner knew to stock what she liked.  "We'd been planning to check it out eventually.  And there are few others I can think of who can compare to Shield's prowess as a tank."  Persi returned to her snack.  She lost interest whenever he got to scheming.  Action suited her better.  The snap of Freyd's fingers disturbed her lapping once more.  "I know exactly what we need: someone who's been there before."  Downing the dregs of his drink, and dispensing a handful of col to cover his tab, Freyd was up and moving in an instant.

Shield and I are heading down to bust our BID cherries.  Want to show us the way?  If you handled it solo, the three of us should romp through the place.  Shield is waiting at the entrance to the fourth basement.  Be there by noon, if you can.

Thanks

Be there by noon if you can, huh?

By the time Oscar woke up to check his messages, it was already 11:55. Somehow he doubted he had the time to roll himself out of bed, get dressed, and make it there in time. He typed back a quick message, rubbing the sleep from his eyes as he did.

To: Freyd
From: Oscar

Make it like 12:30. Maybe 1. I just woke up.

With a grunt, Oscar heaved himself out of his bed and opened his door. At his feet, Leeroy and Jenkins slumbered peacefully. Oscar stepped over them carefully and headed down to the kitchen to rustle up some grub. As he did, he pressed two buttons in his menus. In a flash of light, his clothing appeared in place of his night clothes. From his stores, he pulled a selection of buffs. After gorging himself like the fattest of fatties, Oscar whistled sharply. In response, he received the pitter-patter of feet upon the stone floors and a rush of wind as his two-headed hound dashed into the kitchen with a quickness. They were given two large T-Bone steaks a piece, which they ravenously began to devour off of his kitchen floor. Meanwhile, Oscar sipped down a cup of coffee. Long had it been since he last felt the tingle of caffeine upon him and he would find himself waiting even longer. This was just his ritual, one that waited for no man.

When all was said and done, Oscar made his way to town and down to Floor One. By 12:36, he was stepping up to the entrance of the lowest floor in the Black Iron Dungeon. He greeted the vaguely-familiar tank with a drowsy wave, removing his shades and placing them into his inner pocket as he did. "Sup Shield," Oscar said, the haze of sleep still thick on his voice. "Freyd told me you guys were going for a romp. I'll be your tour guide today. Need any buffs before we go in? Things can get a little hairy in there pretty quick."

He invited the hotdog man?

Shield pushed this thought to the back of his mind. He had heard other players mention Oscar before, and although he had not been able to keep close tabs, he knew that the merchant of tube-steaks had played his part in the battle against Shadow. "Glad to have you. And yes, I'd be grateful for what you have to offer. I haven't had a chance to go shopping since the tier increase."

He selected extra health, extra defense, and a boost to his looting. It took him a moment to decide, but eventually he settled on the defense as the most beneficial buff to further buff. Summoning a small bottle from his inventory, he drizzled a savory sauce on the dog, giving his kitchen's benefits to the item before horking it down with the others. Once he had managed to force down the last few morsels, he turned to Oscar once again.

"Whenever you're ready, I think you're the one scouting ahead, but I'll be right at your elbow to defend when the time comes." He held out his hand and Manticore Mask materialized at his fingertips. Its gleaming red leonine eyes stared out from the center of the shield's mass, its outer edges shaped into folded steel wings.

"I haven't had a chance to go shopping since the tier increase."

How serendipitous. Oscar cracked a smile as the tank accepted the items that he had on offer. "I've not had the opportunity to restock since then either. There's this wonderful little Alchemist shop on the main strip in town though. Might want to give them a visit until more shops are able to get up and running. But, we've got something on our plates already now, don't we?"

With a playful jab towards Shield's shoulder, Oscar headed inside. The layout had shifted since he last visited. Where he had first been greeted with a wide open chamber, he was now standing in a narrow corridor. "That's interesting," Oscar mused. "Layout must shift every time you come in. No big deal." Previous experience had told him that corridors such as these often had rooms off to the side that could contain a treasure chest. A scant few steps more, and they were upon it. The dark lighting and the lack of any distinct markers made it almost invisible if you didn't know what you were looking for. Oscar poked his head into the room and looked around.

"Nothing. A shame," he said. He certainly could have used some back up the last time he opened a chest. Perhaps now it would be made less annoying. "Sometimes these side rooms just don't have anything in them. I imagine they're still trapped so I wouldn't venture in. Besides, I've come prepared this time." Oscar let out a short whistle. In short order, Leeroy and Jenkins came bounding down the hallway. They came to a stop in front of Oscar, tail wagging excitedly. "Alright boys. I'm not awake enough to be picking this dungeon apart. Go find me a chest." The two heads of the cerberus let out a short bark each and bounded off deeper into the dungeon. Oscar let out a contented sigh as they disappeared round the corner. "Gotta love dogs, right?"

A mild smirk never fully realized upon the edges of Freyd's lips as his hooded gaze turned upward to the darkness clinging to the high, vaulted ceiling above.  This dungeon was made for larger groups with wider corridors than one might otherwise expect, yet the masonry walls and intermittent columns ran unusually high.  They reminded him of ancient Roman ruins that his father used to drone on about during his endless lectures, but the proportions were off.  You would only create such height to provide a sense of grandeur that was otherwise lacking, or to conceal...

"AMBUSH!"

Slamming the featureless hole in space that was his weapon into the ground, its butt end flared white with force and flung him upwards.  Even more disturbing, his own shadow remained on the ground, staring toward the careening Whisper as he ricocheted off the walls like a bizarre black bolt of lightning, until he vanished into the abyss above.  A flash followed, briefly illuminating the  overhead bay and four sinister-looking winged fiends surrounding the black clad madman whirling like a dervish in their midst.  Two more flashes, like vignettes from an old-style paper flip book, each one down a monster from the previous blast of blinding light.  Then came the screeching and the rain.  The former Shield recognized from prior encounters as the seal around Freyd's staff peeled back for momentarily glimpses of apocalyptic void as the nothingness within swallowed its opponents whole.  Rain came in the form of fractal motes belonging to former demons, now defeated.  It vanished before reaching the floor.

Freyd's lingering, groundside shadow bulged awkwardly as a third dimension twisted and emerged from within, as he unfolded himself from his own casting upon the wall.  He joined the others in looking up before noticing their gazes shift slowly down to him instead.

"Oh, ummm, nevermind" he said, shrugging with eerie calm, as if everything they'd just witnessed was perfectly normal.

"We were gonna follow the dog, yeah?"

Shield had to stop for a moment and appreciate the fact that, if cooldowns had not been added for sword arts, his role on this mission would be completely useless up until the DPS ran out of energy. However, considering that Freyd would not be able to reproduce that assault for a good chunk of time meant that his position on the front lines were still relevant - for the moment at any rate. In the dust that settled after the vanguard, a gleam caught Shield's eye from the corner. A small cadre of dark shapes formed from the very substance of the shadows. Within their umbrae, a shining white smile, toothy and cheshire-like, twinkled menacingly within their formless masses.

Taking his opportunity to step up to the plate, Shield's chest expanded, giving space for his trained lungs to inflate to their fullest capacity. As four identical smiles surrounded them, the stalwart warrior's voice boomed out, filling the room and shaking its walls. "WIPE THOSE SMILES OFF OF YOUR NONEXISTENT FACES, OR WE'LL DO IT FOR YOU!"

With all the yelling going on, Oscar could barely keep up with all the goings and comings. He did see Freyd completely nuke an entire group of enemies, which was quite impressive. And then there was Shield, engaging a second group with a gusto that Oscar personally hadn't been expecting. Certainly not now. Not this early. Oscar could only yawn as he strode forward past Shield, summoning Money Shot from the ether with a flick of his hand. The golden hammer manifested in a fountain of Col, coins bursting forth from the top and cascading downward, only to shatter upon the floor. He certainly wouldn't be able to obliterate these guys with a single swing, but he could definitely make 'em feel it. He took hold of his weapon, driving the head of the hammer into the ground. The shockwave rippled outward, tearing up stone and debris as it carved a path towards the Smirkers. Like a shotgun, the enemies were perforated by razor-sharp shards.

"Alright, Freyd," Oscar began tiredly. "Finish 'em off."

"Oh, hey... Money Shot!  Nice to see it again.  What say we go double or nothing, eh?"  Slipping silent past Oscar's right shoulder, Freyd caught the first two figure full on, folding the first in half with a thrust to the abdomen.  A quick follow-up smashed its neighbour against the nearby wall with enough force to shatter its already damage form, while he kneed its breathless brethren and sent it flipping backwards.  The inky thing was still smiling that joker-like grin as its body twisted, then shattered into a cloud of light.  Though he finished his kata, the other two mobs had made themselves scarce and circled round to strike at Shield.  It might helped their efforts if they'd tried doing so with their eyes open.

"Dangit.  Sorry, Shield.  I'll scare them harder next time, so they might actually hit!  Should we paint some bullseyes on that Manticore mask, or something?"  It was a poor showing after his first burst, but Cardinal had long been fickle with his fortunes.  Freyd has simply grown to accept it.

"Oh, hey... Money Shot!  Nice to see it again.  What say we go double or nothing, eh?"

"Sounds like a plan," Oscar responded. And so, hot on the heels of Freyd's attack, Oscar rocketed forward. The pair of Smirkers found their half-assed offensive efforts intercepted by fifty pounds of gold swinging into them at terminal velocity. As one would flick away an insect, the two enemies were sent flying sharply into the nearest wall where they unceremoniously burst into polygonal fragments of data. Without a word, Oscar pocketed their loot and let out a heavy sigh.

"Dangerous dungeon my left nut,he said to no one in particular. Before he could voice his discontent further, a pair of quick barks followed by a loud howl could be heard deeper in the dungeon. Oscar straightened his back and craned his neck towards the direction of the sound. "Looks like my boys found us something interesting. Let's go catch up."

Cool Downs [Howl - 1/2]

Shield blew air out his cheeks, letting his shield arm relax down by his side. He resisted the urge to swear under his breath. This really was a bit of a joke. As of yet, he had not proven useful in the slightest. He had sacrificed all of his scouting to tank, and thus far tanking had proven utterly useless. He supposed that a few swipes had been taken in his direction, but it wasn't more than the others could have handled on their own.

At this point, I'm barely pulling my weight. I greatly overestimated this dungeon.

He heard the barks and made his way along the corridor in their direction, careful to stick with the others as he did not have himself currently statted to spot any potential threats. Unless he just planned to amble through traps, which seemed like a terrible idea, sticking by Oscar would be key.

"I seriously hope there are more threatening obstacles along the way, or I'm going to continue to be very unhelpful," he grunted, scanning their surroundings, though it was more a formality than anything at this point.

It wasn't long before the group rounded the corner and saw Oscar's familiar waiting patiently for them outside of the chamber. When his master rounded the corner, the two-headed hound barked happily and began to wag his two tails rapidly. Oscar cycled through his menu and produced a large steak, which he promptly tossed the dog's way. The pair snatched the large slab of meat out of the air and began to tear into it as Oscar headed into the room and approached the chest. He let out a heavy sigh and gestured back at Shield and Freyd, waving them inside.

"This can go really good or really badly, and I've never seen the good outcome. Get ready."

Tentatively, Oscar began to unlock the dark chest. He knew what would happen if this particular container was trapped and, frankly, he wasn't looking forward to it. Much to his surprise, as he opened the lid, he could make out a glimmer of gold light from within. The lid snapped backwards, an explosion of gold wreathed in a rainbow burst up to the ceiling. Two Demonic Shards and a Gleaming Scale were added to his inventory. Oscar was actually surprised they got anything interesting, much less something this interesting.

"Oh wow," Oscar said. "For you and for you." A Shard was passed to Freyd, a Scale to Shield. He didn't want to be greedy and take it all for himself. That went better than expected.
