[SP-PT-19] I Thought I saw a Puddy-Splat [Keep Calm and Ki'Raion]

'Phil', as Freyd had dubbed the elderly gentlemen after so many similar encounters, had given him the usual spiel.  First there were the rumours of a massive lion-like creature out in the Forbidden Lands, then all sorts of superstitious nonsense that felt more like filler than meaningful content.  He wanted facts, not speculation, and trusted to his own past experience before the ambiguous smattering of deliberately vague clues about what he might face.  Last came the emotional appeal, which found no purchase whatsoever.  Freyd had face Ki'Raion before, several times.  The mob had always been among the more dangerous he'd encountered, and that alone garnered more caution than 'Elder Phil's' rantings.  But, sometimes, you just have to go through the motions.  

Floor Nineteen had changed more dramatically than some of the others after the recent update.  Leaving the sanctuary created behind the Bastion Wall, the Whisper's gaze drifted with mild interest over the statues in the bleak stone shrine that separated it from the stark and lifeless landscape beyond.  Desolation dominated here, though the history that had caused it still eluded him.  That was a goal for another time.  Hearing and feeling the screeching winds scouring the broken terrain, Freyd focused solely on the matter at hand: to slay the great cat once more and learn its secrets.

How had such a potent creature even managed to endure in such a wasteland?  Had it managed to elude whatever calamity befell this place, or was it part of the cause?  Freyd's mind wandered while he walked.  There was nothing else to do or look at, so he elected to indulge.  Bits of strange ruins and markings occasionally poked out of the shattered landscape, but there were not enough collective elements for him to piece together any kind of pattern.  Perhaps, if he returned and delved deeper, there might be some more interesting tales to be found beneath this entire floor's worth of rubble.

A flash of brightness ahead had him instantly on alert.  Crouching down to lessen his profile, Freyd reached into the darkness beneath a nearby slab of powdery sandstone and drew forth a bit of umbra in the shape of a long staff.  It was a like a stick-shaped hole in space and reality that felt inherently wrong to behold, and was seemingly abhorrent to the very concept of existence.  And yet, there it was in his hands.

Darting like a shadow trying to dodge its way into reaching the sun, he scurried along the surface.  Ki'Raion turned, but only in time to see the darkness rise and smack it between the eyes.  All of a sudden the beast of the sun was seeing stars.

A furious flurry of fast and deadly strikes followed the first, forcing the giant beast back as it struggled to understand the nature of the threat that assailed it.  Its large paws struggled, searching for footing as the creature was forced to give ground.  Stones broke under its massive weight, loosening its footing further and causing it to slip and slide backwards even as it tried to mount a defence.  Freyd, meanwhile, being ever light on his feet, flitted from shadow to shadow.  He was everywhere at once and nowhere that Ki'Raion could confirm or find purchase with using its claws.  It was like his own personal form of blitzkrieg, overwhelming the mob's senses and ability to respond.  Within moments, Ki'Raion's originally impressive health bar was floating deep in the red zone, and its end seemed nigh.

Samael's Pride smote the ground before it, spraying a shower and gravel-like shrapnel against its thick hide and petaled face.  When the lion roared, rather than inspiring sensations of power to be feared, the sound carried confusion and desperation instead.

Choosing defiance in the face of defeat, Ki'Raion let loose one final, mighty roar.  Freyd sensed its vulnerability and exposure, sweeping in from the flanks to deliver the final blow.   A silent pause clung to dust-laden air before the mob exploded into a shower of brilliant light.  Everything within a mile had likely seen it, which forced a grimace onto Freyd's face.  He didn't like to advertise his work so blatantly.  A quick system pop-up confirmed that the skill he'd been after had been collected.  The mob's defeat had served its purpose.  

"Thank you, Ki'Raion." 

Nothing was left to hear the spoken words, yet Freyd felt compelled to voice them aloud.  It was a strange habit that had been growing in prominence in his mind: the death of mobs was necessary, but not without due credit and thanks to the defeated foe.  It was a lesson that high grandfather once tried to instill in him, that only recently taken root.  If these creatures were to be felled for the advancement of players towards their goals, they might as well be given credit for playing their parts.  No sympathy was attached, simply due acknowledgement for a part played.

The ground shook, suddenly, even as Freyd finished his somber musings.  All around him, tiny stones thrummed and danced, bouncing vigorously on the broken, rocky surface.  Soon, they were joined by larger hunks that seemed to tear themselves away from the surface.  A cloud of dust so thick that it nearly blinded soon surrounded him and the clatter of rock on rock grew in intensity and proximity.  Shadows formed and gathered in the haze, followed by dozens of pairs of glaring, angry, yellow eyes.  Large figures prowled around him, walking on all fours.  They were smaller than Ki'Raion, but also sleeker and more menacing.  Theirs was the essence of stealth and the hunt where Ki'Raion's had been the power of majesty and strength.

"So, it is true after all," Freyd muttered to himself.  "The great cat did, indeed, have a pride. Curious."

There were dozens of them, circling all around and eager to make him suffer for their leader's demise.  Where some would be tinkling through their pants, at the moment, Freyd was already figuring out his plan.  Fear held little sway over him.  This was just another puzzle to be figured out.

Another pack of stone lionesses emerged from the dust cloud, each looking like some sort of amalgam of sandstone and fury cobbled together by wind.  Hatred was palpable in the air.  They wanted blood, or whatever might be considered its digital equivalent.  More specifically, they wanted him dead.  Freyd read it in their eyes and offered them a simple, blunt reply.

"No."

A single, circular swipe from his weapon unleashed a cascade of screeching void mixed with the irrepressible gravitas of the heavens.  Stone shattered and broke, becoming dust to be added to the whirlwind that threatened to swallow him whole.  Freyd only glared in response, as if will alone could keep the storm at bay.  He would let them come to him and shatter each in turn.  Though they swarmed violently all around, he sat calm and collected in the eye.  Ki'Raion's pride had no idea of the depths of his resolve, but they would learn if it was their choice to test him.

Wave after wave, they crashed inward.  It was like watching the ocean desperately try to fill a void within its surface, yet somehow failing to do so.  Freyd's movements, too, were like water.  They flowed from one strike to another, unrelenting and precise.  No energy was wasted.  Every step and flick of the wrist, or spinning twist of body and limb was purposeful.  It was graceful, in its own way.  And no one would ever see it.  That last one was crucial.  Freyd had no desire to boast of prowess or skill, and it suited him just find to have other see and think of him as some sort of bumbling buffoon.  Truth be told, bad luck seemed to find him most readily when he was grouped with others.  The consequences were more glaringly obvious in the context of a group.  When he fought alone, everything rested on his shoulders alone.  It was an easier burden. 

The image he had crafted for himself likely hindered as much as it helped.   He saw the looks in the eyes of his fellow players, wondering how close to being unhinged he really was.  The truth might terrify them even more than their suspicions.

Rather than ebb, the storm gathered strength all around with every foe he felled.  The horde of stone felines failed to diminish, despite the sheer number that had been cut down.  More resilient than most, especially under these circumstances, Freyd also knew that his resources had their limits.  If any kind of victory was to be found, it would mean venturing forward and breaching the bastion of rage seeking to engulf him.  Setting his jaw, Freyd waded forward.  His cowl whipped violently about, but held fast to his thick skull as he pressed into the storm.  A few steps later, he was gone.  The whipping sand and stone was swallowed him whole, accompanied by the roar of a dozen angry mobs.  Each sensed weakness and opportunity.  Their prey had left his perch and joined them in their hunting grounds.  Their assumptions were soon proven wrong.  Thunder resounded from within.  The Whisper was in the wind.

Flashes of white briefly illuminated the cloud.  Each time it did, another pose was visible.  It looked like one of those flip-books that kids make in elementary school, save with a much more lethal mien.  Every time the light flashed, more stone demons converged upon its source.  They rained inwardly, crashing against the force that fought to escape them.  Despite their efforts, the light made slow but steady progress, moving outward from the centre.  

Fatigue was a strange thing in SOA.  Freyd had pushed the limits of the game and his own endurance to extremes plenty of times; probably too many.  This moment would likely end up adding to the tally. Wading through a hail of angry stone lionesses hell-bent on your demise just wasn't a good idea, no matter how you sliced it.  He could have just popped a crystal and been gone, but that would have meant giving up on his prize.  There was also no reason to believe that this madness wouldn't ensue the next time he attempted it. 

No.  Forward is the only option.  Press on.  They will falter before we do.

Barely halfway through the cloud, assuming his bearings held true, Freyd sensed the strength of the storm starting to wane.  Their numbers were dwindling beyond the mobs' ability to sustain the effort.  As impressive as it was, as a manifestation of rage, the storm itself did little to hamper his progress. 

It's a psychosomatic effect.

Yes.  Cardinal knows his game well, and isn't above putting challenges before players that target more than their stats.

Indeed.

Three more four-legged foes fell to his advance.  Somewhere in the recesses of his mind, a tiny Ryan Reynolds voice call out something about it being like a dozen legs.  A curl graced the corners of his lips, pressed tightly together against the wind.  Too little light penetrated the floor for him to seek the sun as an end goal, but details were slowly becoming visible through the swirling haze.  The mountainous walls of the Bastion Wall loomed as a dark band in the distance.  Even his foes were getting easier to make out as they raced about him.  Cardinal had lost his head game.  Freyd could see the way out of the storm.

Only a dozen or so assailants still remained, though their constant movement made it impossible to confirm the count.  Still, it was a fraction of what he faced when this ambush began.  They were also losing numbers about as fast as he was losing energy.  

This might be a close thing.

No worse than any you have faced before.

True.  And for all their effort, their roars seem worse than their bites.

Several stone lionesses garnered his dismissal by his expression and took offense.  Leaping high, they sought to use the weight of their stone bodies to pin and crush him.  It didn't work.  Instead, the Whisper dodged and rolled, then whirled and smashed them into pieces with a single blow.  The storm lost all vigor at their deaths, exposing the last dozen of their original and now badly depleted pride.  

"Tsk. Tsk.  What would Ki'Raion think if he saw you fail like this?"

They pounced in waves.  Waves of stone that crashed upon a shore of water, yet were broken by it.  Within an instant, the dozen had become a pack of eight.  Even as the brief light from the shattered motes and fractal fragments of their fallen fell away into nothingness, Freyd ceased his advance and let them come.  They circles around him.  From above, it looked like a series of stone gears winding themselves up, or coiling like some sort of spring.  He made ready to break their spirits once more.  A well-placed lunge and dash broke their pattern as he made a break for the Bastion Wall.  They had expected him to fight.  Why bother, if it wasn't necessary?

Giving chase, the cats were fast but hampered by the weight of the materials from which they were made.  They lacked the grace and agility of flesh, and it cost them.  Freyd had already learned their weaknesses and was making good use of them.

He could feel it his extremities.  The weight of lengthy battle was catching up to him, and the system began to enforce its toll for keeping up such a frenzied pace.  Slipping into his own shadow, once more, Freyd reappeared in the midst of his remaining foes.  The move caught them by surprise and felled half of them before the balance recovered and stood clear.  The system compelled their continued aggression, but the fire had gone out of their hunger for vengeance.  This was mandatory defiance now, leading to the final slaughter.  Freyd had seen the look behind the look in their eyes.  It was the same one he'd once seen in the haggard faces of the pawns of the Sundered Spire.  Gleam and passion had been dulled by awareness of pending oblivion.  The poor things just could do anything about it.  The human part of Freyd felt a fleeting sympathy, even as the rest of his drove his staff through their shattered meshes and sent them to their fates.  He was as bound by the dictates of that system as they were, and he seethed against the truth of it.

"Come on.  Let's finish this."  The taunt was cold and harshly delivered.  

The mobs recoiled, hesitant to approach after so many of the brethren had fallen by the player's efforts.  Surrounding him again, two baited and feinted.  Deliberately falling for it, Freyd sacrificed his position and overextended himself in order to reach the nearer two.  Both burst in a puff of lazy blue fractals, but they had achieved their goal.  The last remaining pair latched on, each with a mighty maw upon a single arm.  To their great surprise and consternation, their mighty jaws failed to do more than leave four pairs on Freyd's limbs.  For all of their spectacular power and numbers, they could not penetrate his armor.  He almost laughed at the ridiculous turn, but just managed to hold off.  Reefing his arms forward, he sent both stone lionesses skittering for their footing.  Their mate was gone.  Their pride was gone.  Soon, the last remaining two would join the rest.  They shares a look with each other.  Freyd stood his ground a few yards away, ready and waiting in his defensive stance for them to make their next move.

They did, and died for it.  Two swift snaps were all that was required to end the fray.  The Whisper stumbled and nearly tumbled forward after the last blow fell.  He had nothing left in him for more and needed a moment's rest before he could think of anything else.  Leaning on his staff and kneeling to better stabilize himself, his cowl came to rest upon the weapon's gleaming seal.  

"I must look like I'm praying," he said to himself.  No one else was left to hear him, except Montjoy.  And, while not easily dismissed, his shade was quite the same as another mob or person.  Focusing on the sudden return of silence, Freyd let it wash over him and cleanse an lingering doubts and distractions.  Refocused, he lifted his head.  Something still seemed off.  Bending low, he pressed he hood against the ground, along with both palms flattened out on either side.  He felt another rumble, more distant than the one that had spawned the lion's rocky pride, but also more potent.

Pulling a spyglass from his inventory, he scoured the horizon for any signs of the source.  It wasn't until he rounded on the direction of the Bastion Wall that he spotted it: the wall moved.  More accurately put, some large enough to look like it matched the height of that monolith structure moved.  It instantly reminded him of the massive golem creature from the Scents of the Wild quest.  It had clearly parked itself in his path and appeared to be staring in his direction, just as he was watching it.  Grasping the spyglass more tightly, he tried to steady his gaze and get a better glimpse of detail as it bent down and reached for something at its feet.   One of its arms shot skyward.  Freyd furrowed his brow and turned his own gaze to the skies, without the benefit of his seeing tool.  What first appeared to be little more than a dark dot traveling across the heavens rapidly gained size as it approached.  Scrambling to his feet, Freyd rushed forward just in time to have a house-sized hunk of rock come crashing down where he had just been.

Apparently, rest wasn't going to happen.  Rushing forward in a zig-zag pattern, Freyd made as terrible a target of himself as he possibly could.  The sky rained stones the size of Volkswagons as he homed in on their source, regretting that another battle had to follow so closely on the heels of the one he had just finished.

This is madness.  You've barely had a chance to recover!

Montjoy's concern was as touching as it was irrelevant.  What other options did he have?  The thing was hurling car-sized hunks of stone his way.  Perspective!  Weaving to and fro, Freyd closed the distance as swiftly as possible.  The thing before him was a titan - a roughly humanoid figure in shape, but colossal in size.  How would he even fight such a creature!?  It didn't seen inclined to give him any choice in the matter.  Without other options, Freyd made ready to engage.

Something dampened his spirit the closer he got to the giant.  He felt weaker, overall, but had little choice.  It needed to be felled if he was to return to "Home" and let Phil know of his success.  That was assuming that he didn't get stepped on and squished in the process.

Freyd just grinned like a lunatic and rushed forward.  The distance closed surprisingly quickly.  More quickly than his opponent had anticipated.  It seemed to think that it would have more time to fling rocks at him with impunity.  He had other plans.  Vast creatures such as these were rarely effective at close range.   Freyd would do what Freyd did best: make a nuisance of himself up close.  If this thing was all that remained between him and his objection, there was simply no other choice: it would have to go.  Samael's Pride sang in his hands.  It clearly approved.

Pole vaulting from the surface, Freyd caught just enough air time and distance to clip the titan just below the ribs on its right side.  The blow managed to fracture the surface of its mesh rather thoroughly, but the mob had a long way to go before it was down.  This was just the beginning.  

The creature reacted with surprising speed, catching him in mid-air and whipping him into a nearby rock face.  The impact left a Freyd-sized and shaped crater on the rocky ground, from which said originator struggled to crawl forth.

"Ouch.  I think?"  Freyd set his gaze back on the immense creature that likewise gazed angrily back down at him.  It raised its foot to snuff him out, but he was long gone by the time it even struck the surface. 

I was going to suggest that we just bypass this thing, but now I'm all for putting it in the ground.

"Persi!  Go left and gnaw on its ankle or something!" 

His shadowy familiar darted off as instructed, but Freyd struggled to properly regain his footing.  For the next minute or two, he was forced to roll, tumble, leap and otherwise slip through shadows in order to avoid death by Monty Python foot.  The Ancient - according to its tag - seemed focused on just squishing him in the fastest possible way.  A half-dozen copies of the Whisper suddenly manifest and scattered in every direction, seeking to confuse and distract the massive creature.  He needed to buy time and properly setup his own offensive.  Its sheer size and a bit of good fortune had stolen the initiative.  He needed to steal it back.  Montjoy and his crew scattered and flitted about, causing the appearance of a grand old mess while actually affecting nothing.  It did what needed to be done.  Recovered and poised to resume his attacks, Freyd felt ready to unleash.
