[SP-PT-09] Polishing off the Iron Knights

Freyd stood on a dark rise overlooking the roasted valley below.  Everything here smelled of sulfur, brimstone, and death - death that crawled.  Shambling across the landscape were dozens of undead soldiers, most of them looking that have been seared, boiled or otherwise summarily cooked in their metal armors.  It was like watching a field of rent and broken cans, waiting for someone to come along and pop them open to get the loot out.

'I volunteer,'  he thought to himself, grinning out one side of his mouth.  Opportunities to grind at the lower floors had always been rare.  This was a choice opportunity to find some gear to help out Quip and the others in Firm Anima who were just getting started.  A shattered keep, all covered in soot and charcoal marred only by points of impact by siege weaponry, dominated the far side of the field.  That would be the end goal.

There was nothing particularly notable about the mass of shambling, armored zombies, that he could tell.  Their variety was somewhat refreshing.  Nothing felt less motivating than going after mobs that looked like identical copies of each other - or somehow unaffected by their environment.  Whoever designed these had done a good job.  Their facial features were all different, some having bits of flesh still clinging to their bones.  Others had randomly distributed chunks missing, for the added bit of grotesque realism.  They didn't fight particularly well, which suited him fine given that their loot drops were as good as any other mob's.  It took almost not effort to clear the first group out of his path. Others took notice and started to congregate on his position.

Freyd just made sure he pressed forward.  Memories came flooding back of rescuing Quip and Dingo in Valehaven, or that crazy run into the heart of floor thirteen with Lessa, Chase and Jomei.

It didn't take long to find his rhythm.  So long as he maintained a steady pace, the mobs would simply follow and provide a constant stream of victims to the grinder.  It felt strangely like kiting bosses around in WoW 3.0, but did the trick.  This was a mechanical run, churning through content for the purely superficial goal of earning loot and system benefits - essentially Freyd's specialty.  Montjoy and the rest of the shadow legion were here, of course, but there was little for them to do.  These were the most basic of basic mobs, meant to be culled for content.  Hence why the site was such a boon for grinding.  

Watching the system tally up the coin and materials as they dropped, Freyd allowed himself a chuckle.  He'd spent a bit of time optimizing his loadout for the run, and was glad to see it literally paying dividends.  They were all just resources to be spent, and no such thing existed as the concept of 'enough.'

Moving from ridge to ledge, then deeper down the valley, signs of ancient water courses became visible.  This place had once been green and fertile, it seemed, though who knows how long ago that might have been.  Floor nine was now little more than an ashen, volcanic wasteland, albeit rich in ores and mobs.  Funny how priorities and benefits changed when you were trapped inside a game.  Learn to navigate the system, and you could prosper quite effectively.  He'd met several individuals who'd already mastered this skill, and learned through his own trials and tribulations, as well.

Another iron-clad zombie SWAT team came at him from the right.  Freyd took each down, in turn, careful to maintain his spacing and not pull too many at a time.  He'd long ago realized the thrill that came with navigating such fields solo, with little to no margin for error.  Grouping up with a party always carried a different sort of drama.  These runs were just for him, alone.

Though mostly corroded, a certain constant livery could be observed among the walking dead encountered while descending the slopes towards the valley floor.  The closer he got to the midpoint, the more other markings and symbols appeared, until both sets were showing in equal proportions.

"What happened here," Freyd muttered, even as he furiously smashed another set of zombies into component bits.

"What often happens when stubborn people convince themselves that they are in the right."  The hollow-ringing voice, oddly enough, came from his left.

A sudden whirl of his staff cleared the surrounding mobs and created a small clearing among the throng, enough to see the ghostly outline of a warrior of noble bearing, whose visage was concealed behind the press of spectral plate that covered every inch of his body.

"Let me guess: you were the referee?"  Freyd snorted a bit, even as he moved to keep the horde at bay.

"No," came a gravelly response from the opposite direction, sounding like razor blades scratching across a sheet of polished steel.  Another specter emerged from the battlefield.  Where the first one carried a ghostly blue pall, the new arrival's was more crimson in hue.

"Seriously," Freyd snarked.  "Star Wars much?  Do you two space wizards want a moment to wail pointlessly at each other, or is this more the duel of the monologues part of the show?  And which era are we dealing with here?  These different timelines are so confusing."

The ghosts just hovered silently, giving him the same strange and incredulous looks awarded by puppies after their owners try communicating with words.  Freyd just sighed.

"Please continue."  He wasn't really paying attention anyway, nor did he care what their beefs were with each other.  "Yeah, guys, I'm really just here for the loot."

"But, grave injustice has been-"

"You started it-"

"Don't care, Kenobi-Vader."  Another zombie went down, spilling its guts all over the alley floor even a Mario-like coins chimed into the air.

Freyd debated pointing out that it was nearly impossible for any players to even hear whatever grand moral quandary they were trying to set up.  The designers forgot to leave any kind of safe zone.  So, instead of giving the two dead mobs the attention they both likely deserved, he simply carried on his merry way, slaughtering mobs from both sides as he went.  Following the line of the dry river bed led him towards a series of improvise battlements that seemed to bar the way to the ruined keep, above.  The shambling iron knights were thickest here, probably because most had fallen at this bottleneck in their past lives.  It didn't slow Freyd's progress much, but his energy reserves were dipping to levels best not fathomed while in the thick of battle.  

A breach in the walls marked his best chance to find relative safety and rest, if he could find a way to seal it back up.  Fighting his was forward, it was very apparent that both lines had concentrated their forces at this point.  The walls were crawling with armored figures, siege towers, ropes and ladders alike, all used as means to breach the defenses.

A few well-placed strikes crippled the wooden tower and caused its collapse in the direction of the wall breach. A rallying cry went up from the defenders, even as Freyd raced up one of the ladders to join in the assault.  Having no regard or interest in the politics of either warring faction, he simply beat his way past any mobs that were foolish enough to step in his way.

Knocking the ladder off the wall behind him, he did the same for the other machines, then proceeded to clear out a handful of soldiers who turned aggro on him for the effort. The balance seemed content to keep firing at the enemy, and he was glad to leave them to their business.  A forced advance into nearby barracks provided the place of respite he'd require, as soon as he was done removing the occupants. They declined to depart willingly.

They fared about as well as the rest, which was to mean not well at all.  Within moments, the room was his and Freyd set himself to ensuring that it remained sufficiently secure for a brief rest.  Sparse, to the point of being bare, only a few scrap pieces of wood remained.  Little had likely been in the room during its distant time of use, but now nothing remained.  Warriors had once lived here, eaten meals together and shared camaraderie.  Friendships would have been born.  Arguments fought over aplenty, and possibly a few stray teeth knocked out - if any of it was real.  Freyd saw only the place as it was, and was designed to be.  If there was any kind of atmosphere to the ruins, it was a crafted illusion by Cardinal and his host of graphic designer minions.  You could not ascribe a human past to it, without risking deluding your self in the process.

Freyd braced the door as best he could.  The walls were solid masonry and still, somehow, of relatively sturdy construction.  They would keep the shamblers out.  His haul to date had been a good one, and there was likely as much or more again to be gleaned up in the keep.  Persi, who had always been sensitive to the presence of treasure, roused herself beneath Freyd's armor and slunk out to sneak a peek.  The lithe little creature, made all of shadow save her brilliant azure eyes, walked with the bearing of a lioness despite being all of two feet long.  Size aside, the shadow mongoose was as adepts at felling field bosses as any any veteran player - perhaps even moreso.  Sniffing at the air seemed to confirm her suspicions and she purred with contentment at the sensations of treasure by proxy.  Her lummox had done well, for a change, and she was pleased as punch about it.  Curling up in Freyd's lap, the apparent prize for his success was permission to give her belly a rub.

Floor nine had a particular thrum to it, like ever-present thunder stemming from underground.  The source was several volcanoes that spewed seemingly infinite volumes of magma from their spouts, running across the infernal landscape at temperatures that kept everything suitable scorching hot for the stone to remain molten.  Blacksmiths, in particular, loved this place and all the varied ores that could be mined or otherwise collected from its many nooks and crannies.

The sun was rarely visible here, as anything but another ball of fire choking in a smoky haze of greys.  Nights were just darker versions of the day that made the magma seem brighter.  Heat was always at or beyond insufferable, save to those players that had already endured the equivalent on floor five and earned the benefits of their survival.  Freyd had, and never underestimated those rewards.  He knew that he was being spared the worst of the floors environmental ire.

"Come on, Persi.  There's more loot to be farmed out there, and the mobs will start to respawn if we don't get a move on.  So will those siege machines."

She opened a single sliver of an eye before huffing silently and flopping her small head dramatically on his lap.  Her long, cold stretch was oddly refreshing in the floor's oppressive heat.

"Montjoy.  How many are waiting for us outside?"

Only a dozen or so, with an equal number on the path leading to the keep.  Nothing substantial.

"Good.  Stand ready.  We're carving ourselves a path out of here."

Wielding his sliver of void, Freyd knocked aside the brace he'd set on the door and burst back onto the battlefield.  They were technically behind the lines at this point, but that meant little when everything in there was an aimlessly ravenous undead monstrosity that no longer cared about which side they were on.

Crashing back into the undead horde, Freyd and his companions made short work of any opposition they encountered.  To be fair, it wasn't all that hard when half their helms were welded shut or otherwise obscured the mindless zombies' vision.  Heroics weren't exactly required.  This was more of a gauntlet than an epic confrontation against a near-insurmountable bag of numbers in mob form.  And that was the point.  Their foes were supposed to be relatively weak, and require a mere modicum of effort to dispatch.  That's how you get more loot.  

So many players in this game were chasing heroic ideals, personal glory or sheer wealth for their own satisfactions - or soulmates.  There was always a bunch that never seemed to get beyond despairing over their love lives.  A mental eyeroll was indulged, following this thought.  For Freyd, all of it was just a means to an end: to find the game's exit, by whatever means were necessary, or available.

"How is that they keep from falling off the edges?"  

A low embankment led up to a draw-bridge stile span comprised of bolted metal sheets and plates.   It must have weighed several tons.  Neither construction had any kind of guard or guiderails on the side, and Freyd struggles to fathom how it was that the shamblers didn't simply tumble over the bank or edges.  Cardinal seemed to conveniently ignore inconvenience, whenever it suited.  Working his way through the crowded lane, Freyd gradually cleared a path that led to the barbican supporting the steel span.  It wasn't in very good shape - would have been an understatement.  Most of the metal was so pock-marked by droplets of lava splatter, from below, or else the rare acid rains from above that it looked completely incapable of supporting its own weight, let along anything more.

"I'd have to be nuts," Freyd said to himself.

Overqualified, then, hmm?

"Shut up, Montjoy."

"We're doing this Oscar-styles, instead."  Shuffling back a few feet, Freyd took a running leap and cleared over the bridge and chasm as if it were no big deal.  

"I swear, that was probably the single best piece anyone has ever given me in this place."  Montjoy mere stared at him from the far side, before blinking and reappearing at his master's side.  

If you say so.  What was the advice?

"That this place is a fantasy world, and that the constraints of the real may only apply if you allow them to grasp hold of your perspective on reality."

Hmm.  Interesting.  What happens when Cardinal chooses otherwise.

The bridge chose that precise moment to collapse, fall into the magma and be melted down into slag, leaving no remnants of its existence.

"Probably something pretty close to that, I imagine."  Twin crimson orbs spun upwards to glare at the sky, as if something were watching.

He'd barely turned to peer into the keep's courtyard when another wave of armored guardians south to take him down.  Their blades failed to penetrate, and soon vanished along with their slain masters, but the sound of battle had already alerted the rest of the keep to Freyd's presence.  It wasn't a large structure, and little of it had survived beyond the first level.  There were only so many place for monsters to hide.  If a boss lurked around here somewhere, Freyd had seen no sign of it.

There was surprisingly little left to the ruins, other than worked stone and bits of charcoal that might once have been wood. Organic material didn't fare well in this environment, including people. It was understandable that so little remained beyond the ground floor, as timber would likely have been used for support.  Warped poles and standard stood out at various points, probably installed to fly flags and banners that vanished long ago.

Spaces that might once have been stables and stock pens lined the outer walls, along with small stalls with hearths and stoves that would have been used to feed those stationed here.  Worked iron grilles and grates were still visible, along with the charred embers of spent fuel beneath or behind them.  Chimneys built into the walls marked the various tradesmen's shops, some more evident in their purpose than others.

The dead rose around him as he strode deeper into the keep.  One by one, they fell again, but this time left no trace behind, save whatever contribution each provided to his coin purse and inventory.  The completionist in him took over.  Freyd cleared every room, or pseudo-room, and prodded every corpse, compelling it to stand, fight, and give up its treasures.  That was the whole point.  When the grounds had been cleared, he moved into the keep tower itself, and struck down the officers as they rose around him.  Little of their regalias were familiar, even to him.

A stone platform marked the highest reachable point on the tower.  It had likely been some sort of pier of plinth for a staircase that once lined the interior face of the circular structure.  Now, it was just a masonry monolith with oddly shaped and placed slots.  Its function would be unrecognizable to most.  A few more mobs can wandering along the palisade wall to where it joined the stair, offering themselves to the void via Freyd's favoured weapon.  He was happy to oblige and accept their donations.  He was getting tired again, but fortunately few zombies remained to be dispatched.  Dozens of popped pinata clouds laid behind him, leaving no trace in their aftermaths, whatsoever.  

That one was one of Aincrad's greatest wonders and curses: there was never anything left after death.  Cemeteries were made to fill expectations, not because they were needed.  Corpses found in the game were either a morose bit of decor or a plot hook.  And people could do bad things without leaving any evidence, save a marred cursor if they were particularly sloppy or unlucky.

At last, the final gaggle of undead crept out from the sepulcher and crypt beneath the keep.  Two wore cassocks and priestly garb in white, contrasting all other mobs he'd encountered.  The other two wore ceremonial plate so laden with commendations and corroded paraphernalia that they struggled not to topple under its weight.  None of it was recognizable, rendering their appearance even more tragically comical.  They moved faster than the other zombies - at least the unarmored ones did.  The others struggled under the bulk of their metal pajamas and were late to the party.  By the time they arrived, Freyd had already dispatched their brethren and was waiting.  Neither survived the flurry that followed, putting them both bluntly into the dirt.

"That was it?"

No boss.  No grand reveals.  Not even a half-decent bit of lore to explain what all of it had been about.  The grind had reached its end and achieved its stated goal, but little else.

"Montjoy, next time we grind somewhere more glamourous.  This place was a total bust."

Persi was practically giddy with the prospect of frolicking in the gigantic pile of loot they'd collected.  That alone made the whole exercise worthwhile.  

"Yes, yes, you can do your Scrooge MacDuck impression in a bit and go take a swim in the col."  Freyd smiled, even as he rolled his eyes at her.  She reminded him too much of Simmone, at times.  Though, he could quite picture the courtesan taking a bath in cash - or maybe his mind had simply decided that he shouldn't.  Shrugging off the distractions, Freyd climbed back down the stairs, leaped over the missing-bridge chasm and sauntered his way through the ranks of undead he'd had to wade through to reach nowhere important in the first place.

The two ghosts were still at it on the valley floor, each blaming the other for this, that and the other things.  He'd made the right choice by not sticking around and letting them melt his brain with boredom.  Sometimes, all you near is a good old-fashioned murder hobo run, just for its own sake.
