Quentin Harbridge is the bastion of the Madrigal, or he was. Hearty and broad-shouldered, he was always front and centre to carry his team across the finish line. He, Typhon, Jeeves and Smarmy (aka 'Miri') were inseparable during the early days of SAO, forming the Madrigal as one of the game's first guilds and making a name for themselves. It all came crashing down a few months in when Miri and Typhon were suddenly lost to some sort of game glitch.  The consequences of the death game were instantly real, and he'd lost his soulmate to it.  Quaestor withdrew in the aftermath of that loss.  Jeeves was no better off.  With all of the Madrigal's leadership either gone or wallowing in despair, the buzzards gathered and picked the remnants of the guild apart.  More than a few fell to PKers, adding to Quentin's feelings of guilt and depression.

Some solace was found in isolation, keeping to his tiny shop in the silent, never-traveled side streets of Angel's Point.  He'd likely have stayed there indefinitely, until some spoopy weirdo moved into the ruined monastery across the way.  Strangely, the two struck an unlikely friendship.  The kid - Freyd - needed some seasoning and lessons about how to deal with people.  Quaestor needed someone to talk to who wasn't linked to his past.

Years after Miri's disappearance, still struggling with his burdens, he suddenly received a ping in his notifications.  It was her, or some trace of her.  Racing off like a lunatic, with outdated gear and degraded skills, he needed his friend to help him effect a rescue - which they did.  With Freyd's help, all of the members of the Madrigal have been found and restored to the game.  Quentin's heart now pounds in his chest, again.  Life has meaning once more, and he intends to make the most of his second chances.

history

Spoiler

A love of history, tradition and the smell of the open sea lured Quentin to the merchant marine when he was barely out of high school.  Book smarts were never his thing, but he had passion and his wits, and Miri took care of the rest.  She was the love of his life, always taking charge so that he could follow.  They'd signed up together and seen the world, got married and made a life together at sea.  They always came as a pair.  No other home was required, save whatever vessel they'd signed on with last.  So long as they were together, everything would be fine.  Neither of them were prepared for the storm that awaited them.

Signing up for SAO while vacationing, they had just pulled into port in Osaka and were enjoying a bit of sightseeing when his younger brother-in-law roped both of them into playing some newfangled game.  Quentin contented himself to follow the crowd and signed on for a trial test.  They'd already seen most of the tourist areas and had a few days left in port before returning to the ship.  Why not, right?  Right.  Even when the unimaginable happened, he kept them cool and collected - on even keel.  It was always his role to keep them together, so that's what he did.

virtues & flaws

Spoiler

virtues

big softy - Quaestor always comes across as a giant teddy bear of a man.  He's simply incapable of scolding or intimidating anyone he cares about.  Saying 'no' to his friends can be a challenge.  Content to stay away from the battlefield, Quaestor usually works to keep the peace, domestically, as best he can.

wisdom of ages - Spending a life at sea teaches you many hard and practical lessons.  The most valuable ones offer insight into human nature.  Quaestor always seems to know what to say, and when to say it, to help people when they need it most.  Often dismissed as the big, cuddly doofus in the room, he has a knack for hitting the nail on the head when everyone least expects it.

good natured - Taking enough beats makes you appreciate the little things. Despite all the tragedy he's endured, Quaestor always bounces back. His soul could be a powdered pile of dust in his hands, and he'd still find a silver lining. Mostly, now, it's all about stuffing something tasty down people's gobs until they start smiling or pass out from over-indulgence.

flaws

emotional - Quentin has always been driven by his feelings.  He does what feels right, regardless of whether it's the smart course of action.  It's gotten him into trouble too many times, and may have contributed to the original downfall of the Madrigal and loss of his wife and friend.

broken - The sudden and inexplicable loss of Miri and Tython, then alienation from Jeeves, and finally the collapse of their guild and loss of so many friends devastated the man.  Quaestor's fighting spirit has been shattered.  He can barely even wield a weapon anymore, unless the gravest of stakes are at hand.

heart on his sleeve - Everyone on the ship always loved playing cards against Quentin, because he was such an easy mark.  While not necessarily gullible, the man is a terrible liar.  He also equally awful at keeping secrets.
