[F??] Champion's Hall

Recommended Posts

A shade pulled itself from the stillness of the chamber, rent from the fabric of absence to stand upon its own two feet and appointed with a task.  Lean and lanky, it walked in silence to the terminal to convey its master's wishes in silence and solitude.  Selection made, its umbral digits wrapped around the conjured item and absorbed it into the void.  Staring at the polished walls and surfaces, its reflection was unfamiliar, even alien, to its unseen eyes.  There was no substance in shadow, only the opposite.  Pausing to survey and memorize the ornate, pristine features of the hall, its presence marred the opulent magnificence of the space, yet was permitted or even outright ignored.  The Hall of Champions did not discern, or did not care to do so.  Duly noted.

Shuffling in silence back to the dark corner from which it had come, the shade faded from view and existence alike, waiting to be called upon again.

Ambling casually through the gargantuan halls, he'd slowly been regaining subtle stepping lost to the vagaries of system and popular need.  What was a loud Whisper, he would ask, though the question was known to be loaded; apples versus orangutans, etc.  Truth was ever more complex than it was credited.  Perhaps time could actually fix such things?  He should have asked Bob when he'd had the chance, not that he was especially chatty for a 'Forgotten Time King.'  Was he forgotten by time, or had he simply lost track of it?  Who knew?  Bob definitely wouldn't say.  What a jerk.

"Uh... let's see here."  Long, slender fingers like spider legs danced across the menu.  "What don't we have yet, that might actually be useful someday."  A few potentials jumped to the forefront.  "Yeah.  That one.  Why not?"  Imagine if a boss could actually be disabled by such a thing?  Actually, hadn't that been the case once?  He couldn't recall whether it was Gabrandr or some other foe.  It didn't really matter.  Choice made, the Whisper returned to his shadows, muttering more random nonsense to himself as he went.

she'd ended up presuming what she took earlier were staples for damage oriented players like herself, despite rarely being seen, save for the occasional event.

so then, on all accounts, picking something else from the list felt a little bit like a missed opportunity. still, night did so, holding the shard of iron will in her hand. a broken piece of metal, its make ornate, almost like an old key meant to stow away one secret or another. and such a thing was a consumable? she could hardly believe it.

the item was swiftly cast into her inventory, just as the other statues blanked of gifts from the present. a pity she forgot to investigate the few others that piqued her interest, night realized, late as usual, and so relegated her interests to the visit next moon. with her back against the stone she'd stolen her treasure from, she vanished with the teleporter's light.

Tracing the trigger key for his recently acquired meathook, Freyd had yet to actually use the vicious looking thing.  It proved to be an unexpected boon from a touch-and-go encounter on the outskirts of Glyndebourne, for which a certain item from this place had proven to be invaluable.

"Seems prudent to replace such a treasure, don't you think?"  Persi wasn't paying attention, being far too absorbed my a miscellaneous trash can unfathomably denying her righteous curiosity.  There was probably nothing in it.  They'd never seen a janitor or NPC in the place, and he could only conjure one or two names that might have access to the halls.  None of them were the littering type.

"Given everything we've seen of the latest floor, and its labyrinth, it seems a prudent choice."

she didn't forget to check this time.

there were a great many items on display that vowed to grant immunity, it seemed. which was an odd choice, night considered, given the deference towards culinarian crafting items to bear the load from the enemies. and, admittedly, there were other choices on display that were for the better in most circumstances.

so these, made for niche scenarios she presumed, might have been best suited for a last resort, surely.

night rolled the vial in her hand. delicate, unblemished and lean, with something akin to liquid quicksilver within, its shapes changing with each shift in gravity, the air bubble dancing in lieu of its absence. with a bounce of her hand, it was cached with a glitter of pixels, leaving the absence of the other items a ritualistic signal that she should leave.

the player quietly sent a message reporting her return home.

The fickle prompt rung out on the wanderer's screen causing him to stir. It was a curious sort, egging him on to a warp pad within the thoroughfare with Ariedennia. The context mysterious and yet the sender more so. The system itself? How alien, and yet oddly reassuring all the same. A flash of blue light and the nomad found him to space he'd never wandered before, which an entirely new sensation. Past suits of armor, and over overtly gaudy glaring floors. A scan to the roof sees the faint light pouring in overhead, casting a sharp flare of yellow as it strikes the massive columns. Time spent here far too great, invited into this space. The message read clear, that this was some sort of reward. But to Raidou this could very well either be a trap or inversely an opportunity. Doors within do not budge, and despite windows there is nothing but a cloud scape to see. Each call of his voice echoes back at him, proving that he was alone. To a platter, one of many, lay an item on each. Some of them familiar, others not. Each of them rare, and the man makes a call. It was offering, and it would prove a good sample.

Even if this was a one time thing

To the pedestal he gently plucks an item he already had, and in response the other statues close shut. Guarding what was no longer available. He now had to spot the difference in his scientific study, and hope to understand more

she did the math, and found it unsavoury. so whilst this haunted hall had seemed as though it wasn't meant to be visited in the first place, night had to elevate her frequents to it as near necessary, especially with her most recent escapades asking much of what she could do pushed to their limits.

there were a slew of updates, too, that bistro had access to its details of. night hadn't figured out how or why just yet. night had barely even been briefed about the subtle ongoings from cardinal. she simply decided that discussions such as those could be sought out at a later date, when they weren't entirely focused on the battle ahead, and when she could feel comfortable taking a break, notes organized, battle plans refreshed.

for now, grabbing the flame from one of the statue's hands and bounding off seemed like the best move, so that's exactly what night did.

The final piece of an overly complicated puzzle, identified and collected at last.  A chilled phial of purest, most solid cold, so much that it sapped the breath from your lungs from a dozen steps away.  More Wulfrin's style than his own, yet necessary.  Hopefully also worthwhile.  Most of these would soon see a need for replenishment, the stores about to be pilfered, devoured, or plundered, depending on your perspective.  It seemed like a waste, but that line of thinking lead to warehousing of a style that might make a certain movie adventurer-archaeologist cringe.  The stuff was meant to be used, and it would be.

Turning towards the exit, Freyd felt the echo of something different about the place.  A new visitor?  Had someone else final breached the ceiling?  A few candidates immediately came to mind.  Pressing finger to face, despite lenses in absentia, he merely smiled to himself, turned, and headed for the exit.

A flash of the warp gate would bring the man back to this strange chamber, allowing him again to peruse what it had to offer. That gleaming hall of gold so much to the point of eccentricity. Every step would echo off the walls, pronouncing the empty space and further validating its emptiness. To the receptacle again sat numerous items, and the nomads prior sample proved nothing. It was virtually similar. However, Raidou would see value in a confirmation. To the stone that sat upon a stone pedestal, eyeing carefully the statues on each side sporting poleaxes and shields. A deep slate color armor that seemed to house no creature. Gingerly he'd approach and with his gaze measuring them on edge, he'd take the stone. As if on repeat the other pedestals flare causing the items upon them to disappear as the armors would cross those weapons of theirs, blocking access. "I suppose that's it for now." The man would move to the gates, another sample in hand. Until he understood the motive, he'd keep his aura of caution.

Freyd entered the hall and stared at things because the sign on the door said he couldn't just wander in and pick up what he'd wanted.  The prescribed time since his last visit had lapsed.  He stood around waiting and wasting time, because some arbitrary rule meant he had to, even though there was absolutely no point to it, whatsoever.  It was dull, meaningless and felt like a complete waste of time, because it was.  Running a mailed gauntlet along poorly traveled surfaces was in no way to test for dust, but if you needed to kill a few minutes, then ensure that they were utterly slain, why not?  This place served as a mausoleum for such doornails of lost time and effort, unchanging, and its boons borne by a potential for uselessness that might bear no more fruit than the sterile air of the Champion's Hall.

*DING*

Ah, the time requirement had been met.  He took his wares, then wandered out.

what'd she hand out? it was a duality to jomei during the floor boss fight, wasn't it?

night took a look at her stock when she entered, stepping off the platform. each drop, each footfall felt like it rung in the halls for an eternity, the ghost of its echo still haunting her after the sounds had long faded off into silence. her memory hadn't failed her; her nerves remembered how unsettling the place could be since the last she dropped by. and the number indicated in her inventory seemed to remind her in verification that she was right.

so she set the past behind her, erasing it as an obstacle with a wave. from the hands that offered the player a gift, she took duality off its pedestal, watching in gratitude as the statues receded, fading away. before the pressure in her ears could build, she turned tail, too, and in just the same manner, faded away into the light.
