Background:

Valerie, or Val, as she was often called, had what would be described by most people as a rather standard life before SAO was released. She was born in Derby, England, to a pair of fairly wealthy parents, Michael and Sarah Augustine. Her father was a mostly humble man, someone who had spent most of his life working in order to get by and support those around him until he was able to expand what was once a simple family business into a moderate franchise of numerous stores throughout nearby counties. It was by no means extravagant, but it was something that he had earned and the man was damned proud of his achievements, even if he wasn’t one to admit it. Her mother, on the other hand, was a fierce intellectual woman who had worked her way up through university and eventually managed to land herself a rather important and high-up position in a rather large pharmaceutical company, which came with an equally impressive yearly salary. The pair used their combined wealth in order to lead a comfortable, somewhat luxurious life, and, when Valerie was born, they used it to make her life just as comfortable. She was afforded a rather cushy upbringing, surrounded by the opulent wealth of her parents. They ensured that she was educated in a private school, rather than a public one, and often pushed for her to excel in her studies, sometimes in a manner which placed a great deal of pressure upon their daughter. Her mother often insisted that Valerie should focus upon the sciences, fields of study which she saw as far more applicable and profitable than where her passions truly lay; she was a rather creative soul, as the girl drew a great deal of joy from drawing, painting, and in general creating, allowing her creativity and imagination to flourish and be expressed freely.

This conflict, the fact that her mother pushed against her desires and her passions lead to Valerie growing to be a rather stubborn woman, for she had grown up constantly having to fight to  be able to pursue what she wanted to pursue, and as such, she became an unyielding individual.

Despite all of this Valerie pushed forwards; she kept up her studies, improved her skills and, eventually, managed to get a place in a local university to study the art that she loved so dearly. At university she flourished and adjusted to the lifestyle quite well, becoming a valued member of the university’s community and excelling in her studies like never before. While at university she also learned of SAO, the up-and-coming VRMMO which promised to be an exciting immersive experience unlike any other in the world. Despite the fact that she, generally speaking, wasn’t that tech-savvy and hadn’t dedicated much time to learning all the ins-and-outs of even the most basic aspects of anything related to a computer, she found herself drawn in, almost captivated by the possibilities that SAO promised to offer. So she told her parents whenever the topic seemed appropriate, and, while her mother had little interest in the groundbreaking VRMMO, her father saw the joy that it brought her, how excited she became whenever she talked about it, and decided that if she passed her exams, then he would do what he could to make sure that she got a chance to experience this strange game that seemed to set her imagination alight. This was achieved through, well, nepotism…nepotism and some rather large donations.

So time passed, Valerie kept at her studies and eventually ended up passing to the next year of her degree with flying colours (well, mostly flying colours, although she always blamed her one failed module on the fact that the lecturer had, as she put it, ‘a massive problem with me for no god-damn reason, mum’) and as such her father rewarded her with a nervegear and a copy of SAO, which, to say the very least, made her quite happy.

So, on SAO’s release date, once she had finished all of her work and had a few hours to kill, Valerie logged on, and, like so many others, was trapped in SAO.

Virtues

  1. Unyielding- this is both a virtue and a flaw, a double-edged sword, as some would say. on the positive side, Valerie is a steadfast and determined individual, the sort of person who would just keep on pushing onwards once they have their mind set on something. No matter what stands in her way, she will strive to push forwards and achieve her goals, regardless of the cost.
  2. Selfless- Valerie is fairly selfless, as throughout her life she has always made a point of helping others before herself. She often put things aside completely in order to help those that she held dear, no matter what. Big or small, short or lengthy, whatever they needed, she did her best to provide it. This doesn’t mean that she’s always some paragon of virtue, but she often goes the extra mile for people that she cares about, but don’t expect her to go out of her way to help some random person to the same degree.
  3. Protective/caring- Throughout her life, Valerie has always had an unexplainable part of her which drove, compelled her to help people who were younger than her, or appeared downtrodden or weak. She was always the person who took some time to give a fiver to a homeless beggar, or offer to pay for people’s tickets if they were stuck and had fallen on hard times, and this carried through to SAO. While there may be no players of a lower level than her currently, once there are, this will most definitely kick in.

Flaws

  1. Unyielding- This is both a virtue and a flaw, a double-edged sword, as some would say. On the more negative side, this trait can make Valerie a frustratingly stubborn individual to deal with. If she thinks she’s right, then, even if she’s being stupid and headstrong, that’s the hill that she’ll die on. This can make convincing her to change her ways or see another view point an extremely hard, close to futile effort, and as such this can lead to uncomfortable friction when she has to work with others.
  2. Confrontational- Throughout her life, due to the fact that her mother was ever so slightly overbearing, Valerie always had to fight to get what she wanted, which has lead to her becoming a somewhat defensive and prickly individual. If someone opposes her, or stands between her and what she wants to achieve, then she can quickly become hostile. This, of course, can lead to her getting herself into some rather unpleasant situations due to her own hostility.
  3. Headstrong- Valerie is, to say the least, a stubborn and abrasive individual at times, traits which she gained from having to push against the well-intentioned restrictions of her parents. Because of this, she has become an unyielding and headstrong individual; if she wants something, then she will keep on pushing forwards until she gets what she wants. Even if things have gone horribly wrong, she will just keep on pushing, determined to carry on and never give up, never falter. Whilst some may see this as a positive, and in the right situations it very much is, it can also be a dangerously stupid character trait. Unless she is forced to, she will not run from a fight or abandon a project or venture; Valerie will endure, even if it kills her.
