[F3 - SP] Return of the Child | <<Captured>>

Recommended Posts

The bottom of the steps led into a larger room – one that was clearly a storage room for whatever was being kept in an area like this. Unfortunately for Nari, that something wasn’t a collection of col or materials. Instead, what she found were two less than friendly looking men – both brandishing short swords and looks of less than welcoming appearances. The closest one to her – slightly shorter and less physically overwhelming in Nari’s mind – was her first target.

Rushing forward, she didn’t give them the chance to react to her presence, instead launching directly into an assault against these new targets, determined to deal with them as quickly as possible. Twirling herself as she went, she let the glaive drop from the crook of her elbow into the palm of her hand, controlling its movement even as she was in motion. She brought the shield up and towards her centre, preparing to deflect any returning strikes that may be thrown her way.

Her strike connected with both of the two individuals – actually managing to catch the neck of the secondary individual. She dropped back, trying hard to keep out of the second individual’s reach while she focused on bringing down the first of the two targets. She knew that her life depended on being able to keep the one at bar while bringing down the other, and the focusing her attention on the second target – but felt a spike of adrenaline rush through her body as she realised she was engaging in what would be her first real dangerous combat in quite some time.

‘Steady. Focus on the goal, bring down the one, then the other. It’s how you survive here.” Realising that she only had one chance here, she let the glaive lay loose in her hand, calling upon the art that she knew would most benefit her. She knew if she could just disable their ability to strike her easily, that she would be in the best possible situation.

The two strikes glanced off her, barely registering on her health bar – but frustrating her nonetheless. Sure, it wasn’t putting her in danger, yet. But she needed to end this now – so that she could assure herself that she would be fine. Even a little bit of damage repeated over time could become dangerous, especially when she was in the situation that she was in – outnumbered.

A quick glance at the second figure, Nari rushed forward towards the one she had just struck, bringing her shield swinging outwards in an attempt to activate the thorns within it, hoping to quickly dispatch this single target and move on to the next. It was a gamble, and one that relied on her ability to connect – but she figured in this tight space she didn’t have much chance of missing, unless something went truly wrong. And then, well, then she’d be in trouble regardless of what she did or did not try to do.

The first of her opponents exploded into a thousand shards, dissipating throughout the air. She felt a moment of pride as the second figure seemed to hesitate for the briefest of seconds, before determining that he would somehow complete what his opponent had failed to do. Lowering the glaive slightly, Nari prepared herself for the charge she knew was coming, waiting for the moment when he would rush forward in order to attempt to overwhelm her. She held her breath, watching his movements and following with the tip of her glaive, watching for the sign of what she knew was coming.

The moment she saw it, she twisted the glaive, bringing it straight into the path of the man, hoping to impale him as he tried to get in close to her to use his own weapon effectively. At the same time, she brought her shield up before her, hoping that she would be able to deflect any wild slashes that made it through the defence of the long handled blade in her left hand.

Against all her efforts, the man managed to slip past not just the glaive – although he managed to slam himself against the blade hard as he came through – but also underneath her shield, catching her in the side which likely would’ve been a much more deadly hit if it hadn’t been for her armour. She watched as he continued to bleed from the wound she had inflicted on him, his health bar travelling further down into the red area. She knew that she had this fight almost completed, but didn’t give herself the chance to celebrate quite yet.

‘Never cheer too early, that’s when things turn around on you. For now, let’s just end this. Carefully.’ She watched as her own health bar recovered – the damage dealt to her disappearing as she returned to full health. She had to admit, that battle healing was an amazing feature to have, at least in these easier encounters. Taking a half step forward, she lashed out with the glaive, knowing that if she just connected once that this would all be over quickly.

As her final opponent exploded into a shattering of shards, Nari felt her tension release. It had certainly been one of her tougher fights – but at no point had she truly been in trouble. The entire thing had been a major confidence boost – perhaps she was almost strong enough to travel to the front lines. ‘Soon. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves after one successful little fight. Let’s try something truly difficult before we just jump into what has killed many others.’

She couldn’t argue with the logic, which normally would’ve made her annoyed at the voice in her head. But…she was different. She knew that she couldn’t maintain her promise if she wasn’t careful – and jumping into danger wasn’t being careful. Especially if it was just to prove a point. Shaking aside all the thoughts, she remembered why she had come here. Striding forward, she focused on returning to the hunt for the leader in question, noticing that there was no goodies of any sort in this room – but maybe the door at the other side would lead somewhere better?

The room beyond the door was not what Nari had expected. Two small windows allowed light in from the outdoors – clearly at street level, and yet large enough to light up the room clearly. Within it she found a large table, food plated and set as if someone was getting prepared to enjoy a meal. On one end of the table sat an open stool, as if a guest was expected to arrive at some point in the next little while. A plate, cup and bowl had been set, as well as the many utensils that would normally be seen in much fancier settings – or at least, Nari assumed as much.

On the other end of the table sat a woman who stared curiously at Nari’s sudden appearance. She wore what appeared to be a cross between chain and scale mail, and Nari could see the zweihander set against the table beside her – within easy reach should it be required. Nari let the glaive roll back into the crook of her arm, wondering if there was a way to get through this without resorting to violence.

The tension remained in the air for a few moments before the woman’s voice suddenly broke the air. It was far harsher than Nari had expected, a cracking, hard tone to it. “I don’t remember inviting anyone else to join us for dinner. Who exactly are you, and how did you get past my men?”

Nari knew she had to be careful here, where one wrong word could lead to a very dangerous situation. Glancing at the woman, she decided on a middle ground, telling a portion of the truth and hoping it would appease her – at least for the moment, although she wasn't sure how likely that was to be.

“I…am here for the boy. I was told that there was a ransom required to bring him back. His mother sent me to retrieve him.” She stared at the woman, watching for the tick that would give away her intent to action. But instead, she queried Nari further – apparently not quite ready to get physical either.

“And…where exactly is my money, then?”

‘Ah, crap. Well, it was a good run – I guess this isn’t going to be solved through words. At least I tried, right?” The sarcasm wasn’t lost on her as she shifted slightly – a movement clearly not lose on the woman who was watching her. Nari saw the woman’s arm glide towards the blade at her side, readying for the conflict they both knew was coming.

“I uhm…never said that I was bringing a ransom. Just that I was bringing him home.” Nari nodded towards the door behind her, moving her right arm upwards as if to gesture as well – but instead bringing the shield into a better position to deflect the attack she knew was about to be launched at her.

The woman moved as if a blur, and Nari barely got her glaive out of the crook of her elbow as her opponent rushed towards her, the zweihander moving in her grip as if it weighed nothing at all. ‘Let’s dance. Only one of us is walking out of this alive, and it won’t be you.’

Nari was ready for the woman’s assault, managing to bring her shield up and her blade down in time to slam the sword art’s strike into her body – causing her to seize up and the zweihander to bounce harmlessly off Nari’s defences. She knew immediately this wouldn’t be an easy fight, and that should would need to be extra careful with her energy and assault style. She couldn’t afford to be careless here – it could lead to a deadly disaster for herself.

Shrugging off the concern and forcing herself to focus on the fight itself instead, Nari slammed her shield forward, attempting to unleash the thorns that had proven so successful in the previous fights. She knew that the stun effect would only last so long, and wanted to take as much advantage of it as she possibly could – especially considering how little damage her first strike had done to the woman’s health bar.

The ringing of her shield slamming into the woman’s body seemed to echo throughout the room, and Nari had to shake her head as the brunt of the force filtered up through her spine and into her head – something that she assumed would have an effect on her later, at some point. For the time being, she needed to focus on bringing an end to this fight as quickly as possible – and her thorns were definitely doing the trick.

Pulling the shield up in front of herself, she braced against it, letting the glaive fall back into the crook of her arm and out of the way of any danger – for herself, and the woman in front of her. Nari watched as the woman collected herself, clearly shocked at the force of the shield and the danger it presented – before bringing the zweihander up for another attack. The blade whistled through the air, and Nari attempted to slide underneath its swing and slam her shield into her opponent all at the same time.

Nari felt the blade of the large sword slash against the side of her face – the tip barely grazing her, and her health bar dropping a single point in response. At the same time her shield came slamming into the woman’s side, releasing the thorns hidden within and slicing across her body – before slithering back and then slamming out into her again in response to the damage Nari herself had taken. Leaping backwards, Nari pushed some distance between herself and her opponent, eyeing the woman carefully in an attempt to determine how best to finish the fight.

Letting her glaive drop into the palm of her hand, she took a half step towards her left, trying to force the woman into an opening that would allow Nari to pierce her defences without any interference. The woman however followed her step for step, keeping Nari in a position that was no greater than the one she had started with. Deciding to risk a possibly dangerous reaction, she called forth the thorns from her shield, attempting to transfer them into the blade of the glaive – causing the weapon to glow with a soft violet colouring before swinging the blade towards her opponent.

Nari turned to leave the area, just a door on the far side opened up – one she hadn’t previously noticed. Stepping out from the door was a man garbed in less than appealing clothing of a mixture of orange and green, a look of surprise on his face as he took in the scene around him, including Nari. A snarl erupted on his face, and Nari had a sinking feeling that she knew exactly where this was going.

Her hypothesis was proven just as the man brandished the longsword that had been belted at his hip, letting out a roar before slamming through the table and rushing towards her. Sighing heavily to herself, Nari brought her glaive down to meet the rush of the man, hoping that this would be the last one. ‘How many freaking people do I have to kill before I can just take this damned child home to his mother and call it a day?’

Her blade slid up and over him as he ducked beneath, slamming his own blade into Nari’s shield in retaliation. She felt the blow drive her backwards, the force causing a single tick against her health bar as she came to a stop against the wall. Frustration roaring from her throat, Nari pushed back against the weight of the fighter, forcing herself free from his lock. Rolling off to the side, she brought her blade back up, preparing for another lash towards him.

The blade slipped through the air, the first few strikes passing harmlessly near his body. As she felt his defences opening, Nari called forth the sword art – attempting to slam the blade into his body and release the thorns that would tear through every inch of him. ‘I. Have. Had. Enough. Of. You people. Just…stop and die now. You’re not going to stop me from completing this quest, not you, not Cardinal.’

The two of them danced around the room, their blades flashing as they attempted without any success to land a hit that would bring this fight to an end. Nari felt herself growing tired as the conflict continued – she’d already felt worn out from the fight with the leader – and now she was having to face this newcomer. None of her slashes had managed to connect with the man yet, and in her frustration she decided to throw it all away and try something that had worked previously.

Rushing forward, hoping she could get beneath his guard and into the sweet range that would render his sword less dangerous – due to being unable to properly bring it to bear in such a close range – she brought her shield up before her, hoping to slam her opponent into the far wall and unleash the thorns that normally had been so strong for her.

Ducking underneath the wild swing of the man as he realised what she was attempting to do, Nari forced herself forward, slamming the man against the far wall and causing the air to expel from his lungs. She heard a soft ‘shink’ as the thorns erupted from the shield and impaled his body. A soft grunt, and Nari stepped back, wondering if she had managed to do enough to end it all.

The blade swinging upwards and slashing across her front made her realise this wasn’t the case, and in a frenzied reaction, she brought her glaive down, hoping to end everything with one final strike. The violet shimmer on the blade seemed to play against the dark area as it swung downwards, casting a shadow against the wall. Nari’s eyes followed the movement as everything seemed to slow down, the finality of it so close in her mind, she could almost feel the victory – and the end.

The fight over, Nari turned and left the room, closing the door behind her as she went. She crossed back through the fort, coming across no further individuals, before making her way back down the stairwell to the cells – finding the boy exactly where she had left him. Waltzing up to the cell, Nari opened the door, gesturing out to the hallway.

“Alright, let’s go.” The boy seemed to hesitate for a moment, as if unsure if he should leave the cell. Nari sighed, her patience wearing thin as she waited. “The bandits are all gone. Let’s get you home.”

Her words seemed to cause him to realise it was safe – or get him moving, whichever, Nari didn’t care. Leading him up and out of the area, she turned towards the gate back to the forest, striding off – stopping only to make sure he followed her.

Nari tried to tune out the constant nattering of the child on their return walk, fighting the urge to ask him less than kindly to please shut the hell up. She felt a moment of bliss as they eventually re-entered the small village, the boys mother coming running up to greet her child, and thank Nari.

“No, really. It’s nothing. Just. Please. Please take him. And don’t lose him again.” She hoped it came off as a bit of humour, but deep down, she was truly hoping to never have to do this quest again. ‘Why are children so annoying…?’
