Venrough, Floor 16, 11:24AM

Of all the Floors Koga had yet to visit, Floor Sixteen had to have been the most pleasant. Not bitterly cold, not hellishly hot, but rather temperate, warm, with the scent of salt in the air. Though the air was sticky with humidity, the swordsman did not mind it. The moisture was pleasant, even beneath his coat, when compared to the dry desert air he'd grown up in.

"Maybe we shoulda gotten a place up here," Koga said to Okami as the pair stood at the edge of the docks, overlooking the many and varied sea-faring vessels moored there. "C'mon, maybe we can find some fish for dinner."

The wood beneath their feet creaked with every step, but not alarmingly so. The wood was dark, the grain deeply inset by whatever peculiar physical or chemical property that occurred when wood was left in prolonged contact with the sea. It was familiar, his family's second home hadn't been far from piers like this.

Though, they had lacked the stacked wooden crates with a forlorn, panicked looking sailor sitting atop them that this particular pier harbored. Though Koga had been set to walk past and ignore the man, as soon as Koga and Okami had entered his proximity, the man wheeled around violently. "Y-you there! Have you the heart to aid a foolish sailor? You see, this shipment is due for departure come morn… and my ship’s been thieved! It’s those purloinin’ pirates, Greybeard’s lot or something-or-other. I would lead an effort to retrieve it but folks round ‘ere pay no mind to the business of others. Don’t suppose you could lend a hand?"

At first, Koga said nothing, simply blinking in surprise at the man's sudden movement, before his mind slowly processed the rapid strings of words that had been thrown at him. "Pirates?" Koga repeated.

"Yes, pirates. Ya know, the thievin' kind! The one's flying the Jolly Roger, and sailing a-broadside before opening fire with their thunderous cannons!"

'This game has pirates?' was Koga's first thought, before excitement began to creep in on him. Some childish, fantastical part of him had always loved the idea of landing on the wayside of the law, roaming the high seas and sinking the vessels of tyrannical empires. Of course, history and reality were different, but the prospect within the game...

"So, just to be clear. You want me to board your stolen ship, commandeer it, and sail it back to port? That's all?" Koga asked, to be sure he understood.

"Aye. Ye'll have to fight the crew that swiped her out from under me, but if ya do, you can be certain there'll be some coin in it fer ya."

"Alright. You've got yourself a deal," Koga said with a smirk. For a moment, Koga was about to extend his hand to shake the other man's and seal the deal but...to say the other man looked dirty would have been an understatement. Instead, Koga made due with a nod. "I've got someone who might be able to help us," Koga informed the sailor. "Let me reach out, we can cast off as soon as I get word."

The Wolf opened up his messenger and scrolled through quickly, searching for one name in particular. Freyd. His doppel had seemed to know a bit ship-to-ship warfare and commandeering vessels during the scuffle in Ladonia...or was it Galtea? Koga had never really figured out who's land they'd put boots on, but it didn't matter. The man at least knew something more about the matter than Koga, and his sword would be a help when taking the ship, he imagined.

Yo, how do you feel about commandeering a ship again? Pirates this time? Come to Floor 16

P.S. Don't forget your eyepatch and some rum

In any case, for now, there was nothing to do but wait...may as well make something of it...

Floor sixteen could only mean one thing.  Greybeard's crew were up to no good again.  Craning his head back beneath his cowl until it cracked, Freyd wondered how psychosomatic the algorithms were that even enabled such a thing, let alone make him feel better by doing it.  Hopefully, this time, he wouldn't have to get shot out of a cannon or accidentally and indirectly set a party member on fire.

"Nahhh.  It'll be fine."

The gekko perched on the rock beside him gave an eerie and decidedly skeptical look.  Maybe the rum had already kicked in, even though it couldn't and he didn't have any.  Pirates were just trippy.

"Oh, hey.  This quest's got one of those unlockable skill thingies.  Probably never use it, but good to know how it works."  Not that he ever needed a reason to tangle with pirates.  The Sky Rats in Ladonia had learned that the hard way, mostly involving plummeting from extreme heights.

To: Koga
From: Freyd

Aye, Aye!  Be there in two shakes of a lamb's sumthin'er-other.  Rum might be gone by the time I reach ya.  Sorry in advance (not sorry).

Koga would know he'd arrived the moment he tapped him on the shoulder.

"Hey.  Thanks for the invite.  Seems like revisiting not-so-old time after that thing on the Ifrit.  You done this one yet?  It can be a boat load of fun."  He grinned madly, with a certain twinkle in his eye that implied that shenanigans were mandatory.

It wasn't more than a few moments before Koga's messenger beeped at him, alerting him to a response from Freyd. Koga couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at the man's decidedly characteristic response. There were quite a few interesting personalities in Aincrad, but few compared to Freyd. Well, except maybe Crozeph, but Koga still wasn't sure that the man was all there. Or even entirely human, for that matter. "My guy will be here in a bit," Koga reported to the still panic-stricken sailor, who simply nodded. "Please tell him to hurry, who knows what those vermin are doing to my beautiful ship!"

Freyd's arrival was announced by a tap on Koga's shoulder. The man turned and gave the other a mischievous smile. "Where's the eyepatch?" he asked jokingly, though he wouldn't have been surprised if Freyd had actually brought one upon request.

"No problem," Koga replied. "Haven't done this quest yet, no. But, I hear a chance to get into some pirating shenanigans, and I can't say 'no'. You?" he asked, knowing that the glimmer in Freyd's eyes were not for nothing.

"No, never."  A wry grin spread across the Whisper's face.  Koga knew the banter game well.  An eyepatch materialized out of thin air while Freyd's cowl flattened itself to his head and became a black bandana instead.  "Is this better?"

"Please!  I must insist.  Time is short."

"Relax, Slim Jim," he said to the ever-agitated sailor, giving him a casual two-fingered salute.  "And yes, we'll be borrowing your uncle dinghy.  Thanks for offering."  The NPC's mouth stalled, as if struggling to maintain its pre-empted script and programming.  "Go practice your archery or something, in case you're needed in another quest later.  Beware the makeup artists with the artificial ears."

Sauntering down to the beach, Freyd looked entirely too at ease with the scenario and environs, like he'd run through it a few too many times, or maybe just chosen to enjoy himself more this time around.

"Have a seat," he said, "offering the rear bench to his companion.  Take a load off.  I know the way.  It'll take about a half an hour to reach the cove.  The pirates are usually quite sloppy and easy to catch off guard, as long as we don't do anything too stupid."  A few past shenanigans came to mind, but were quickly dismissed.  Once out on the open water, Freyd's curiosity got the better of him, plus a need to clear up an outstanding mystery.

"I got your reply about NIGHT, after that quick departure from Baldur's place.  What happened?  Is she alright?"

A broad, but lopsided grin spread across Koga's face as Freyd created a makeshift eyepatch and asked if it was any improvement. "Perfect, now you look the part," he joked in return, finding that he couldn't remember the last time he'd had such a light hearted exchange with someone. Too often Aincrad bored down heavily on it's residents. Freyd was a bit like a breath of fresh air. An admittedly crazy and deadly one, but what wasn't these days?

Koga looked over at ... Slim Jim? as Freyd addressed the man, apparently knowing far more about the quest than Koga did. Then man momentarily blinked in surprised. "Well, I guess that answers that question," he said flatly before reeling his line back in following Freyd towards the tiny dinghy.

The wood vessel rocked side to side, even in the calm waters, algae and barnacles growing on it's hull. The boat sloshed back and forth as the pair took their seats and made way.

Koga cast another line off, the floating arcing through the air before landing in the water with an audible plop. His face darkened, however, as he heard Freyd's question, the quiet splashing of the water against their boat undercutting the serious question with a layer of discordant calm.

"She's fine, just...She had a falling out with a friend of ours..." the man explained sourly, his lips drawn into a tight line. The man took a deep breath as he felt a swell of anger roll in with the tide. "They fought in Baldur's tournament. "'Friend' went into the fight with intent," he went on, excluding the 'to kill' part of his statement. "Really freaked NIGHT out. It's...being sorted out though. Thank you for your concern."

A moment of silence followed as Koga dropped the subject. He was still seething about the matter, pissed off with Nari. The woman hadn't just tried to hurt his closest friend, but she'd betrayed the trust he'd put in her. The thought alone made Koga want to-

"Ah!"

Koga felt a sudden, harsh tug on his line and the man suddenly pulled overboard splashing into the water with a surprised yelp. Thankfully, this wasn't a game where you instantly died for touching water. It felt cool against his skin. His hair floated like a small black halo around his head as he swiveled about beneath the water, searching for the pole he'd unwittingly let go of when he'd gone into the drink. The water wasn't terribly deep here, no more than perhaps twenty or thirty feet to the bottom. It only took a moment for the man to spot his fishing pole, and right beside it, a small treasure chest.

Koga surface up again near the boat with an excited look in his eyes. "Yo, hold up a second! I found something!" the man shouted to Freyd before diving back beneath the waves and swimming down to the chest. Koga first picked up his fishing pole and dispelled it into his inventory, the blue fragments scattering about just like they would on land. Then, with both hands, Koga grabbed the side of the chest and gave it an experimental pull. It had some weight to it, but not enough that it would hinder his ascent. Taking the container in a firmer grip, the man kicked off the ocean's floor, clouds of sand forming as he kicked his way back to the surface.

The water broke with a gasp, followed by the appearance of Koga's head right beside the boat. Gripping the side of the boat with one hand, Koga heaved the barnacle encrusted wood box onto his seat and hung from the side of the boat. "Look what I got!" he said cheerily. "What say we open it?"

His first treasure chest as a fisher! How exciting. Koga reached out to undo the latch, mysteriously lacking any kind of lock. No sooner had the man touched it did the box literally come alive, swinging open violently, and baring weird fleshy teeth and a massive tongue. "Oh what the shi-"

"Ptui!"

The treasure chest spat something out a Koga, striking him square in the forehead and forcing the man to let go of the side of the boat in surprise, splashing back into the water. Whatever it had spit at Koga landed on the man's seat, glimmering in the light before the chest let out a strange sound, it's whole body shaking as if it were chuckling before jumping over the other side of the boat to sink back down to it's home.

Koga broke the water again with his sword in hand, and an angry look on his face, "Where'd that little piece of shit go!?"

Heartened to hear that his mysterious counterpart was alright, Freyd found himself forced to admit that he knew very little about her.

"She actually gave me my very first weapon.  It literally fell out of the sky just as I set foot beyond the gates of the first city.  Nearly sliced off all the toes on my left side actually."  His voice was both joking and nostalgic.  "She later recognized it and said she'd dropped or lost it somewhere, but refused to accept its return.  She's kinda funny that way, isn't she?  We ran some weird Easter-bunny infested horror show of a dungeon together once, and have attended a pair of raids together now.  Heck, I even get gear from her shop, from time to time, but I still know next to nothing about her."

The steady, rhythmic slap of wood paddling against water metered out his words as he spoke them, almost setting a cadence to his order of thought.  Freyd had no musical talents, to be sure, but it was odd to hear him muse about a person in such a fashion.  Actually, to hear him wonder about people at all was a bit odd.

"I think we're not so different from each other, in a lot of ways.  She seems a very private person."  A floundering splash as rod and caster met water.  Did Koga actually have worse luck than himself with regards to fish monsters?  Maybe it was more Oscar's influence than his own.  "Wait... did you just...?"  Koga was gone, replaced by the suddenly irritating ripple of waves bobbing the hull up and over and down again.  His stat bar was vaguely visible under the water, so Koga hadn't drowned, but what the heck was he... seriously?  The man's head bobbed up and out of the water a moment later to find Freyd sitting in the dinghy looking irate, one of the oars laid casually over his seated knees.

"Where'd that little piece of shit go!?"

A wet bandana slapped him over the head.

"Hey, dumbass," Freyd said, equal parts amused and annoyed.  "Since you're already in the drink, why don't you make yourself useful so we can actually get to this place sometime this century."  An outstretched hand pointed a dozen yards away, where the other oar floated, taunting them as it slowly drifted away from them in the current.

The wet bandana slapping against Koga's face lamely slid down and draped itself across the edge of the boat, revealing a clearly displeased look on the man's face before he looked over in the direction that Freyd had indicated. "Yeah, I got it, one sec," the man replied, tossing his sword into the boat, unappreciative of it's added weight in the water, before swimming over to the oar, grabbing it, and swimming back to the boat, tossing the oar in along side Tsuki no Hikari with surprising speed. Perks of being a former surfer.

Koga grunted as he pulled himself back into the vessel and seated himself once more. "Sorry. Uh, what were we talking about?" Koga asked as he took his coat off and began to wring the water from it over the edge. "Oh right. I didn't know you knew NIGHT, if I'm being honest," Koga admitted, his eyes focused on his task. "But yeah. Saying she's 'private' is putting it lightly. I've known her for...I dunno, years, and I hardly know anything about her. And she's my closest friend." Was that commentary on him or her though?

  • 1 year later...

Once they reached the shore, Freyd pressed his finger to his lips as he scanned their surroundings.  Everything was largely as he remembered it.  The dock was mostly improvised, consisting of a rocky shelf next to a natural deep water harbour where 'Slim Jim's' absconded ship had been anchored.  Most of the man's pilfered goods had since been unloaded.  Crates, barrels and bags with various markings and contents were neatly grouped along the 'dock' organized by good.

"Excellent, that means their Quartermaster is here.  He doesn't spawn every time, and it's a bitch to get to the end only to discover that he's sunning himself at some other location.  You can always tell when he's not because they dump the goods in random piles everywhere.  Details, man.  It's all in the details.  For example, they always leave this particular yard arm tied off here."  With a flick of his fingers, Freyd slipped the mass of twisting, tangled rope loose.  Tension released, it was like watching a Rube Goldberg machine unfold with bits and bobs flying in various directions to trigger a series of sequential effects all with a single grandiose purpose: to distract.

The nearest pirates heard and witnessed the plunder of their plunder.  Much ado made, though mostly missing teeth, they'd also walked right into the Whisper's trap.  Darting out from their hiding place, Freyd tumbled and rolled between them, unleashing a flurry of battering blows that soon felled them all save the one standing stunned by the gangplank with his hands wrapped around a large, bulky crate that completely blocked his vision.

"Hey, mates, what are we supposed to do with crates full of doilies?"  He paused, wondering at the lack of response, until a parrot hopped atop the crate and a scorched, leathery face peered around his baggage.  "Crisp?  Cudgel?  Thunderpants?  Are you all razzing Widget again?"  Turning to see what was going on, he spotted Freyd smiling back at him with his ridiculous getup and pointing directly behind him to where Koga was standing.

After managing to wring out his clothing, Koga took to the oars and, with Freyd's guidance, paddled their little boat all the way to the shore. Koga's boots sank into the wet sand as they stepped out of the boat, and the man rolled his shoulders several times, sure to stifle his groans as Freyd took to examining the area.

Deciding that it was reasonably safe to speak apparently, Freyd mentioned that the Quartermaster had, indeed, spawned at the docks today. Lucky them. "Nice, we won't have to run around looking for him then," Koga said with a grin and a nod before looking over at the different things that Freyd pointed out. First the pile of booty, then to the rope. Freyd slipped the knot free and Koga's eyes began to ping pong back and forth inside his skull as he struggled to track the line as it zipped away.

An angry shout then drew Koga's attention, four men rushing forward only to be promptly knocked out by Freyd as the man beat all the poor fools into unconsciousness. Well, all but one. "...Are you all razzing Widget again?" The poor deckhand was first greeted by Freyd, who grinned widely before pointing at Koga who wore a dastardly smile of his own. Koga lifted a single leg, and then stamped it down on a loose board, the other ending teeter-tottering up and right into the last of the pirate's groan. "Oh!" the man let out a sharp yelp, freezing as he tilted backwards, more and more and more until he fell into the water with a splash.

"Well...alright then. Lead on." Koga gestured for Freyd to continue, since he clearly knew more about this whole affair than Koga did. "The boatswains or the quartermaster gonna be much trouble?" the swordsman asked as they walked. Not that he really expected much of anything to be much trouble at his level, let alone Freyd's.

"I actually don't know," Freyd replied, running up the gangplank in a crouch to keep from being spotted by whomever remained on the deck.  "They've changed a few things in this quest over time, which was why I was curious to check it out again.  It really doesn't seem all that different so far."  His form vanished as two more awkward gurgly-screams from above signaled detection of several more mobs.  A couple of pops and free-floating red bandanas on the wind suggested the expiry of a pair of additional deck hands.  Some shrew came spiraling down from the crow's nest in response, then slammed against the gunnels as Freyd replied with a swift kick.

"Where is he?"  This male voice was different and closer in accent to the men back near the docks where they'd picked up the quest in the first place.  "Jessamine!  Are you alr...AAARGH"

A pair of heavily cuffed leather boots and stuffed parrot came sailing over the edge of the ship as the Whisper continued his assault.

"Coco!  NOOOoooo!"

"Amir.  Do you see him?  Where did he go?!"

Chaos sufficiently sown, Freyd was already up in the crow's nest waiting for Koga to join the party.

In the blink of an eye Freyd had suddenly disappeared. And only a moment later, shouts of pain, fear and ultimately death came from above before a red bandana began to float down from on high. Koga's eyes were drawn up towards the lone cloth as it drifted away as he let out a lone sigh. "One day I'm gonna need him to teach me how to do that," the man muttered to himself as a parrot went sailing over the edge, only to find it's wings just moments before striking the water. "Welp, best get to it."

The last two pirates made their appearance on deck, prompting Koga to draw his sword and rush forward. Instead of paying attention to Koga, the two looked skyward, searching for the Whisper. It wasn't until Amir spotted man and pointed his flintlock however, that Koga rushed in. "Hey, over here!" Koga called out as he raised his sword. The first cut caught the Amir on the shoulder, causing him to cry out as he flinched, his pistol going off with a bang, soon followed by the report of Jessamine's gun as well.

Bullets zipping past his head hadn't been on the agenda for the day, or ever, though at least they were going around rather than through him.

"Was it the eye patch?  You just don't like the eye patch, right?"  Leaping over the side of the crow's nest, Freyd whipped around the various rope ladders, sliding to and fro as he dodged their shots and made his descent.  As soon as he'd made it to the ground, the fight was essentially over.  Parrying Amir's cutlass slash with a wooden pinion, he then threw at the pirate's head.  Amir bent low to avoid it, running right into Freyd's waiting knee.  The more sickening bone-crunching was masked by the sound of shattering glass as the boatswain burst into a field of broken lights.  Jessamine shrieked in outrage, charging towards the Whisper with bloodshot rage in her eyes.  A quick scuff of his boot shot a fallen pulley in her path, tripping and sending her tipping forward off balance.  Without missing a beat, Freyd caught her rapier and slashed the rope tied behind him dropping that last piece of cargo still suspended above.

"Slightly gruesome, as deaths go, but it fit the setting, don't you think?"  No sooner had he spoken following the boatswain's defeat than did a pair of new weapons appear in the middle of the deck.

"Hey," he motioned, spotting the two wonky weapons in the corner.  "These are new."

  • 2 weeks later...

As was the theme of the day, Freyd dispatched the two boatswains the level of care and aplomb of a pirate, as if he were one himself. It was a little uncanny how the pair both seemed to find the perfect position to be crushed by their own cargo. Poetic, really. But no amount of poetry could make the sickening crunch of a person being turned into a pancake any less unpleasant.

"Oof," Koga grimaced. "That...doesn't seem a pleasant way to go," he agreed with Freyd before looking over in the direction the man indicated, towards the now shining weapons. "What d'ya know, so they are," Koga nodded, going over to the shimmering weapons. More fanciful than functional, but Koga's greedy little hands couldn't help but pick up the one that looked half like a katana, and half like a Seven-Branched sword. "Wanna bet we get something cool for using these to finish the quest?" Koga asked with cheeky grin.

Peeling off the wraps made out of barely stabilized void from his hands, Freyd dismissed the volatile weapon to his inventory and replaced them with the newly acquired duplicates.

"I don't know... these feel pretty meh by comparison."  A few finger flexes into fists, followed by a bit of shadow boxing, ensured that they were tight and suitably snug for their final fight.  "What's-his-face, uh... not-so-greybeard, I guess, should be along any minute."

As if on queue, Burlock the Quartermaster hobbled onto the deck from below, his super-tropey peg leg blinged out with metal rings supposedly pilfered from past foes and matching the amount of metal in his nose, ears or substituting for teeth.

"Ugh," Freyd groaned dramatically while rolling his eyes. "He's like an eighteenth century cyborg, but without enough steampunk to make it work."

The mob had already started monologuing at them in accordance with its prescribed script.

"Have you ever actually spawned Greybeard?  This is supposed to be his crew, but it's like someone forgot to write the actual boss, you know?"  Waving his hand dismissively at the villain, it was as if the Whisper were searching for some sort of invisible skip button without success.  "Oh, just stab him already.  Maybe that will shut him up."

"I don't know... these feel pretty meh by comparison," Freyd said as he let loose a couple of experimental punches in the air. "Mm, yeah," Koga agree as he gave the katana a spin and flourish, frowning ever so slightly. The balance was off. It lacked that feeling of familiarity he'd grown accustomed to with Tsuki no Hikari. It wasn't just that it was a different weapon, but an inferior weapon. Still. The quest gave these weapons to them for a reason. Who was Koga to defy Cardinal. Again.

As soon as Freyd had mentioned the last of their contenders, the man himself appeared. Koga couldn't help but start laughing with Freyd's comment, earning himself a glare as the villain began his speech. "Oh, just stab him already.  Maybe that will shut him up."
"Oh come on, be polite and let 'im finish," Koga joked, only pausing for the briefest of moments. "Yeah, I'm not a fan of the whole 'villianous monologue' schtick either."

Thwack!

Watching as Koga struck the Quartermaster with a few well-placed and deliberate blows, he quickly chose to follow suit.

"You've got the right idea!  Shatter his defenses and he's ours." Veering right to flank the peg-legged menace, Freyd had to dodge a pointed lunge and heavy hacking slash or two before he could slip under the pirate's defenses and catch him hard in the gut, stealing the mob's breath.  Given Burlock's impediment, he remained surprisingly spry and agile.  Flashing a shiny grin at them both, the mob suddenly produced something akin to a sword art effect, but not quite.  Dashing forward with supernatural speed, he spun on the peg with added force.  Freyd threw himself backwards even as the blade threatened to shave off his navel, slipping a hair's breadth beneath the blade in full Lambada style and yanking the club foot out from under their opponent in the process.  Both combatants scampered to recover their footing, leaving Koga with the initiative.

"Aim for the bling in his face," Freyd added, chuckling.  "Maybe he's magnetic?"

If Koga hadn't known Freyd already, he might've been worried for the other man as Burlock did his best to shank the dark haired man with surprising speed and dexterity. But tier, skill and experience was more than enough for Freyd to narrowly avoid the pirate's blows. The pushed apart from each other, the Newton's laws dictating they be pushed away from each other. But Koga had had more than enough time to position himself favorably.

"Aim for the bling in his face. Maybe he's magnetic?"
The gentle sound of metal tapping against leather came from the pirate's right, drawing his attention for a moment. "Only one way to find out, huh?" Koga said with a wicked grin as he tapped the shit-sword on his shoulder. "Batter up!" Gripping the katan like a baseball bat (his sensei would've killed him if he saw this), Koga swung with all his strength, slamming the flat of the blade right into Burlock's face. A golden tooth flew into the air and clattered across the wooden floor as Burlock staggered backwards. "Nope, not magnetic."

Eying his Wristwrap's Luck of the Sea suspiciously, Freyd was very skeptical that the wet burlap would amount to much of anything.  He was right. Weaving and bobbing around the mob, as if to pacing of some unsung sea chanty tune, he simply couldn't get close enough for a strike.

"How the hell is he moving that fast on a peg leg?!  Is it spring-loaded?  Maybe a pogo or something?"  Verbal barbs were about as close as the Whisper managed to get, though the effect was mutual.  Swinging his cutless as crazily as he was, Burlock wasn't likely to ever hit much of anything himself.

"Have at ye, scallywags!  Get off my pillage and away from me booty!"

"Dude," Freyd claimed, erupting in laughter, "your saggy booty is the very last thing either one of us is after."  He managed to slap the pirate's butt for effect, but no damage, tumbling to the far side and hoping to create Koga an opening to finish him off from behind.

Koga wanted to swing his sword at Burlock again and just end this fight. He really did. But. Saggy booty. The poor swordsman could not get that imagery out of his head now that he had conjured it up. The man had a sneaking feeling it would plague his dreams for the rest of his life, and that thought created such a sense of existential dread that Koga was rendered frozen in place.

When Koga did finally return to his senses, it was just in time to duck beneath another swing or Burlock's weapon. "Hey! I already gotta be traumatized by the thought of your saggy ass, I don't need a shot to the face too! That's just rude," Koga complained as he took a few cautionary steps back, putting space between himself and the seemingly barely literate pirate. Deciding that just some space and air was not enough to ensure that the pirate's saggy booty remained away from Koga, the man quickly vaulted over a crate that stood behind him before kicking it towards Burlock, forcing him to stop it with his hands.

Watching as the pirate lunged forward to halt the crate's progress, Freyd sensed opportunity.  Fortunately, Lady Luck smiled this time around.  Taking a chance that Burlock's peg leg was actually targetable, he delivered a swift kick and snapped the over-extended prosthetic in half.

"Arrrrghhh!" The Quartermaster toppled forward to fall prone, no longer able to support or balance his weight.

"No, it's Yarrrr!"  Freyd corrected, not missing a beat to deliver his own, in fist fashion with a solid jab to the back of the man's feathered bicorn.  For a second, it sounded like the man's pet parrot squawked, despite looking like it was stuffed, and then both exploded into a cloud of glittering, if fish-smelling fractal shards.  An instant later, the telltale ping of a systems prompt confirmed completion of their quest, including its bonus achievement.

"Heh," Freyd snorted as he scanned the details of the newly unlocked skill.  "Not sure when anyone would actually use this, but sure."  A shrug and a sigh signaled the inauspicious follow up that always followed this quest.  "So, do we take the dingy back, try to sail the whole ship, or..." his eyes drifted to a pair of circus-sized cannons on the shore side, "should we consider Oscar's return to sender approach?"

Fuses were lit without pause, followed by the launch of a pair of crazed but thoroughly amused players.
