Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 6, 2022 #1 Share Posted April 6, 2022 The heat of the forest felt oppressive to Nari. She wondered, not for the first time that day, why she had decided this was worth her time. The fee bits and pieces that NIGHT had provided her regarding the Gemini should’ve been enough to force her away from the encounter in general, but something about it had eluded to her – driving her towards this. She wasn’t sure whether she should consider it nativity, or some other odd self fulfilling desire. Whatever the case may be, she was here now, had been here most of the morning, in fact. Another of the creatures burst into shards as she let her spear tip hover in the air, her breath coming in bursts. She had been pushing through the weaker creatures relentlessly as she continued her search, forcing her body to work. Eyes cast over the area, she watched for any further signs of movement. “I’m not sure how long this will take, but I think I’m going to owe you quite the respite after this…” The little fox chittered in agreement, disliking the warmth far more than Nari herself was. She felt sorry for the tiny creature, forced to tag along because Nari had decided to make the trip. She promised herself that she would make it up to the familiar, even if it was simply an artificial construct. Wiping away the sweat growing on her head, she turned back to the forest ahead, pushing herself forwards. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 6, 2022 Author #2 Share Posted April 6, 2022 Unable to stand the heat any longer, and clearly making no headway with her search for the illusive figure, Nari decided to call her exploration early and return to the settlement. She hated giving up, but it was clear that Cardinal was refraining from sending the quest her way at the current time, and although she hated to admit it, she knew she may need to ask NIGHT for help. ‘Or one of your info brokers, maybe?’ Sighing to herself, she turned and made her way back, crossing through the forest path that she had shorn on her way through earlier in the morning. Taking her time, she avoided the majority of the creatures along the way – no real purpose served in facing them now, aside from further tension on her already tired muscles. The walk itself was short, when she wasn’t busy trying to end the creatures that spawned in the area. In only a few hours, she found herself once more wandering through the city entrance, quickly making her way back towards the teleporter pad. A prickling in her shoulders forced her to spin, a sudden feeling of prying eyes on her back causing her to pause and glance about. She swore she could see the shift of cloth around a corner, but the otherwise calm street provided no obvious answers. Uncertain and uneasy, she returned to her gait, moving slower as she went, waiting for the feeling to return. It didn’t take long, and as she quickly turned in place, she saw that similar dark cloth disappear around a corner. Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #3 Share Posted April 7, 2022 “Well, that’s unusual and highly concerning. I should definitely not look into this further…” She whispered to herself, even as her body turned her back towards the alley that the figure had disappeared down. She knew that it was likely dangerous, and pondered if she was doing the right thing as she crossed the distance. Turning the corner, she found nothing more than an empty alleyway awaiting her. ‘No way it would’ve been that easy. If someone was really following me, they’d not let themselves get caught that easily…probably won’t be seeing them again, now.’ She turned back towards the path to the teleporter, annoyed at her lack of success but content that she was at least not likely in danger for the moment. She was just thinking about how she was going to bring it up to NIGHT when she realised her way was blocked by a figure in a black cloak. Yelping as she leapt slightly backwards, she pulled her menu up, almost drawing forth her spear before realising the figure before her was an NPC. Head cocking to the side, she watched as the NPC mimicked the movement, its arms down at its sides in a similar fashion to her own stance. Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #4 Share Posted April 7, 2022 ‘Alright, that’s a bit creepy.’ She eyed the NPC for a moment, wondering if they would announce themselves or their purpose. She was relatively confident that it was the same cloth she had spotted earlier, and had an inkling of a feeling that this NPC may have been who was watching her. ‘Which only makes this whole encounter…weirder.’ “Can I help you with something?” She forced the words out, trying to keep her voice emotionless even as she fought the urge to strike the NPC and run as fast away as she could. Something about this entire encounter felt uncomfortable to her, and Nari’s inner senses were warning her of danger. She counted the breaths as she waited for the NPC to respond, her caution and inner concern only growing as the NPC remained silent. She felt her fingers twitching, urging her to do something. Her left had just begun to rise as the NPC suddenly spoke, the voice somehow as mysterious as the entire figure that made up the physical form. “I’ve been watching you for some time. I have something to show you.” The words hung on the air as the figure turned and began walking towards the walls of the settlement, heading back down the way Nari had just come from. She paused in place as she considered her options. Something was definitely concerning about the actions of the NPC, but at the same time she saw no immediate danger in following it. At least in the settlement itself, she was safe. Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #5 Share Posted April 7, 2022 The figure passed through the settlement back towards the outer walls, walking through the gate to the wilds beyond without any hesitation. Nari paused for the briefest of breaths before following, unsure how wise her decision was, but promising herself that she could find a way to escape if it became too dangerous. The figure continued through the few open areas towards a pathway that led through the jungle – one that Nari didn’t remember seeing previously in the few times she had passed through the area. The figure paused long enough to ensure that she was following, before continuing along the pathway, remaining silent as it went. “Care to share where it is we’re going?” She called out as she tried to catch up to the cloaked individual. The figure seemed to turn its head at her words, as if considering whether or not to answer her question. “You will see, soon enough.” It was about the answer she was expecting to receive, and she decided to bite her tongue until they reached where it was that this NPC was leading her. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #6 Share Posted April 7, 2022 She wasn’t quite sure how long had passed, when the figure suddenly stopped. Glancing around herself she saw only trees, and a larger pond – the area entirely foreign to her somehow. It was reminiscent of the floor itself, the general environment not having changed or shifted dramatically, but something about it all seemed…different somehow, in a way that Nari couldn’t put into words. “We’ve reached our destination, then?” A hypothetical question, but words nonetheless that she hoped would get the figure speaking. During her walk she had pulled the armour and spear from her inventory, the weight of it relaxing her nerves slightly. Something about the area still had her on edge, but she was willing to wait and see what the figure did now. Turning to face her, the NPC spoke for the first time in a while, the words still somehow mysterious to her ears – unable to place gender, or any true identifying value to them. “I have been watching you for some time, as you have progressed. From the shadows I have seen you grow into who you are now, from one who was afraid of the shadows, to a warrior of skill and prowess.” The words, the environment, even the simple movements of the figure had Nari on alert suddenly, the entire scene causing distress in Nari’s mind. She let her eyes cast over the area as the figure spoke – always keeping it in her vision should it decide to try and take advantage of her distracted appearance. Her gaze caught nothing in the vicinity though, although that didn’t bring her any comfort. Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #7 Share Posted April 7, 2022 “I wish to test you.” The words forced Nari’s attention back to the figure, the hood still covering anything that would be a face, hiding it away from sight. She glared at the figure as she tried to figure out what exactly it wanted, knowing that it was after something. “Test me…how?” Her voice was filled with pause, her apprehension at the situation coming out in her tone. She felt herself shifting ever so slightly, raising the shield in preparation for…whatever was about to happen. Somehow, she was sure this was about to get violent. “A trial, of combat. A truly fair, equal fight. I’ve been watching you, I know all your capabilities, your skills. I am the perfect twin to you, the only one who can truly come to best you.” There was a shimmer as the figure seemed to waver, reminding Nari of heat waves coming off pavement. A blink of her eyes later, she was staring into a mirror. ‘No, not a mirror. This is you. You’re looking at yourself…’ She moved her left arm, bringing her spear upwards and off the ground. The figure before her mimicked the movement, almost perfectly. It brought a disturbance to Nari’s mind, making her more uncomfortable as she watched this identical version of herself, knowing that it wasn’t herself but the NPC. She grit her teeth, as much to drive in her frustration as to stop herself from screaming. Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #8 Share Posted April 7, 2022 “I wish to test you.” The words echoed from her mouth. The voice so similar to her own, it was eerie to hear. Her spine tingled in response, forcing her to shiver. This was nothing like what she had expected to occur, but her mind suddenly remembered something that NIGHT had explained about the Gemini. How it was expected to take the form of the one facing it. ‘So, I’ve found you after all. Alright, then let’s do this.’ “How do I know this will be a fair fight, considering you’re connected with the system that controls this entire world?” She was stalling for time, preparing herself for the fight. Knowing that it likely knew what she was doing, but hoping that it would fall for the tricks anyways. She considered attempting a consumable, to try and boost her skills and capabilities, before tossing the idea aside. By the time she had brought up her own menu, it would likely launch its attack. “I wish to test you, in a fair match. There would be no benefit to this, if I were to call upon powers beyond what either of us have available.” The statement was made as if there were no other reasons required, and Nari was almost inclined to believe it. Something about the statement spoke to a truth that the NPC seemed to believe to its core. As if there was no way it could lie. Nari wasn’t quite ready to trust it, but she could feel something about the words that rang true. “Alright.” Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #9 Share Posted April 7, 2022 The sudden movement and strike had caught Nari by surprise. She hadn’t expected the figure to move anywhere near as quickly as it had, covering the limited amount of distance between them and slamming the spear into her shoulder and forcing her torso to spin slightly with the strike. Retaliating to the strike, she forced her shield up, driving the spear skywards and attempting a return attack of her own. Pulling back the spear, she let herself anchor into the ground, before twisting and driving the weapon forwards. Whatever this NPC was, Nari had seen her health bar drop significantly, and had immediately known that this was no longer just a leisurely conflict between the two – this had turned into a fight for survival, and she was determined not to lose this fight. “I won’t be joining Morríghan yet, I have far too much to live for.” The words, whispered on the air, seemed to trail behind her as she launched her attack. She could almost imagine them beside the violet trail that her sword art left behind it, as if they danced in the light. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #10 Share Posted April 7, 2022 Almost as quickly as she had recovered from the assault of her twin, the Gemini figure gained momentum against her. The spear, so similar to her own, lashed out towards her again, catching her in the left shoulder and forcing her backwards as it once again drained her health bar. She tried to pull the spear out, finding the action harder than she had expected as the other figure fought to drive it in further. For a few seconds, the two seemed to be at a stalemate, the weapon not moving at all as Nari fought against her twin. Then, almost as suddenly the NPC gave up, letting the weapon slide out and stepping backwards in order to reset itself. Bringing her shield up, she growled at her opponent, struck by the sudden realisation that she may have actually found her match. She was managing to retaliate the damage through her defensive abilities and gear, but it was certainly far from the balance she was hoping to have in this fight. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #11 Share Posted April 7, 2022 Her twin slowly traced a path around Nari, eyeing her as it moved towards her right, trying to draw her towards an opening. She recognised the movement, something she had done many times against the creatures she had faced during her time in Aincrad. She followed the movement, making sure to keep her shield between herself and the Gemini. “It won’t work. I know what you’re trying to do. Using my own moves against me won’t get us anywhere.” She knew that trying to rattle the artificial intelligence was likely to have no effect, but the words were given all the same. In truth, she was watching for an opening of her own, trying to judge which of her own movements, attacks and patterns it would try and use against her. “We shall see. As I said, a fair fight.” It sudden lunged forward, the left foot sliding just as she knew it would, giving away the attack before it had even truly begun to move. Nari brought her shield up, managing to deflect the strike upwards and away from herself, but leaving her without the opportunity to retaliate in kind against her opponent. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #12 Share Posted April 7, 2022 The up and down movement of her health was starting to worry her. Even though it was still well into the green, she had rarely had this much loss in the very beginning of a fight – and it seemed like they were only just getting started. Her continuous failures to connect with the other self, was starting to cause her concern, and she wondered if she was truly in a dangerous position now. As the Gemini moved forwards again, Nari decided to try something outside of her usual styling. Letting her shield drop, she winced as the spear of her opponent struck into her right shoulder, forcing her torso to twist with the impact. In the same movement, she let the spear she had been holding fling forward, using the momentum from the strike and her own muscles to drive the spear towards the Gemini. She could see the surprise on its face, clearly not having expected the counter to its own assault, giving her an advantage over its expectations. She smiled as her weapon slid across its own torso, leaving a momentary gash where the tip had penetrated. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #13 Share Posted April 7, 2022 “Not what you were expecting?” She growled as the Gemini figure slid around to her side, showing a reluctance to get close to her if only for the moment. She pondered her situation, knowing that only her only advantage here was keeping the Gemini unaware of what she was going to do. ‘Which means I need to focus on not doing what I would normally do. Changing up my habits, taking risks…everything that is not the focus of a tank.’ She scoffed in her mind, knowing it was far easier in theory than in actual practice. She had taken to staying safe for so long, that now that she was forced out of her comfort zone, she wasn’t sure if she would be able to do it. “This is proving very…informative.” Even the pause seemed identical to her own speech patterns. More annoying than confusing, Nari found. Setting herself into her stance, she feinted taking on a defensive role, watching for the sign that her opponent was about to kick off. The moment it did so, Nari followed suit, letting her spear lash through the air in an attempt to strike her opponent at the same moment it struck her. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #14 Share Posted April 7, 2022 Her most recent strike had devastated her opponent, and she watched as it fell to its knees, losing the strength to fight. Feeling an air of caution, Nari waited, watching it from a distance as she tried to determine if the action was meant as a trick or feint to draw her in. She wasn’t willing to let her guard down until she was sure it was defeated, until she was sure the fight was over. “Well, what are you waiting for? Don’t you want to finish me off? To end me? To end a part of Cardinal?” The words echoed something within her. So similar to something she had said, not long ago to another. Her shield and spear dipped slightly as she waivered. For a moment, she found herself locked in the eternal struggle – to lash out at the system that had taken so much from her, to exact some sort of revenge upon it. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #15 Share Posted April 7, 2022 “No.” The single word was a whisper, and at first she was uncertain she had even spoken it. Her eyes remained locked on the being before her, the mirror image of herself. Something about it stayed her hand, forcing her to halt her bloodlust. Something about it reminded her of the humanity she was slowly losing in this insane assault against a system that was doing nothing more than what it was designed to do. “No? But you have fought to hurt Cardinal for so long. To retaliate against it for what it has done to you. Isn’t that right? Isn’t that why you fight, why you continue to destroy as much of it as you can?” The words came with a bitter ring, as if spat upon the ground in frustration. She wasn’t sure if it was her own imagination, or the programming of the NPC, or the adjustments of the artificial intelligence itself in response to her very presence. “It…was. It was. Until now. Until I realised, looking upon myself, what I’m becoming.” She let the spear fall into the crook of her elbow, her hand cramping from the pressure she had been putting on its shaft. Her eyes had locked onto the other figure, wanting so badly to strike it down, and yet knowing what it would turn her into if she did. “I cannot become that. It’s not what she would want. It’s not what I want. I want to be free of all this…to live again. Not to be a vessel of hatred…and anger.” Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #16 Share Posted April 7, 2022 “Is that so? Then you spare me my life?” She could’ve sworn there was doubt in the tone of voice, as if it didn’t believe this was truly occurring. She considered her response, before speaking up. Trying to determine if she was truly going to let this thing live, if she was truly changing her ways. “Yes…and I hope that I won’t regret the decision.” The words were forced through closed teeth. She felt herself shiver at the decision, knowing it was a change she would have to continue to drive towards. It was also one that she knew was right. She couldn’t deny the anger she felt, towards Cardinal, the game, and everything it represented. But she also knew that it would not benefit her to be driven towards becoming a monster in order to exact revenge upon it. A blink, and the mirror image of herself returned to the hooded figure, rising to stand before Nari. Gone was the expression of doubt, the mimicry of her movements and actions. Instead, the mystery returned, leaving her without the ability to read the NPC before her. Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #17 Share Posted April 7, 2022 “I thank you for sparing my life, then. I will admit to surprise. I had not expected such actions from you. I have been watching you for some time now.” The figure bowed, before making its way towards the path that they had followed to enter the small pond area. Stopping before the treeline, it turned back to Nari, something in its posture seeming to hint that it had more to say. “You have defeated me, this time. But I shall continue to train, just as you will. And perhaps the next that we meet, there may be a different outcome to this conflict.” She could only stare in response as the figure paused for any sort of commentary. Eventually realising there would be none, it turned and continued on its way, leaving her to the silence of the small area. “I doubt that, truly. Nor do I look forward to such an occurrence.” She whispered her response to herself, the figure long gone and out of sight. If there was one thing she knew, she never wanted to see the Gemini again, if it meant looking into herself and seeing the darkness within. Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #18 Share Posted April 7, 2022 Left alone with her thoughts, she found herself drawn to the small pond that took up the majority of the area out of the trees. She had barely noticed it when she had first arrived, noting only that it would make for a hazard if things had turned sour during the encounter with the Gemini. Now, as she glanced over it, she realised that it was completely imperceptible – the surface too dark to see beyond, but a perfect mirror. In that mirror, she saw her own face. Filled with the same fear it had held nearly a year and a half ago. She could see the emotions roiling behind it; the frustration, anger, despair. All of it trying to fight its way to the surface, to break free and explode into the air around her. Feelings that she had tucked down inside her, hoping to avoid. But as she stared, she felt that mask break, and everything came pouring out, her grief screamed into the air once more. Spoiler Word Count:
Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #19 Share Posted April 7, 2022 She wasn’t quite sure how much time had passed when she finally realised that she was still sitting next to the pond. She had let loose all of her grief, her anger, her despair. She had screamed until her throat felt raw, releasing everything into the air and not caring who heard. Yuki had slipped from her shoulders and into her lap as she had collapsed to the ground. Out of habit, she had begun to stroke the fox’s fur, taking comfort in the feel of her companion, and the support that it provided by just being there. “We should head back soon, Yuki. Before everyone starts to worry. We’ve been gone for quite some time already.” The fox gave a small chirp in response, which Nari took for a sound of agreement. Forcing herself to her feet, she took a single look around the little glade again, hoping that she would never see the sights of it again in her entire time here – and yet somehow feeling as if the future would drag her back to this location, or one similar to it. Nari-Lanreth 0 Posted April 7, 2022 Author #20 Share Posted April 7, 2022 She had quickly left the glade behind after her last look, making her way back along the path towards the settlement she had left – this time intending to make her way back to the teleporter pad, and home, without any distractions. The walk itself had proven quick, the jungle presenting little in the way of actual obstacles to her, as if the system knew she was in no mood for grinding any mobs at the current time. The settlement itself had seemed unaware of her departure, and her eventual return. Nari had breathed a sigh of relief to find the normalcy of it all, finding comfort in the fact that there hadn’t been a sudden shift in her entire universe. At least the game continued onwards, the players still striving towards that end goal of escape. Her trek to the teleporter pad, and eventually to floor four had been without consequence. The slowly becoming familiar trail to her new home loosening the final tension in her body. As she entered the little home, she found NIGHT waiting in the living room, a cup of something warm in her hands. “You will not believe the day I’ve had…” She said to the girl, a soft smile coming over her face as she threw herself onto the couch beside NIGHT.
