[PP - PvP - F27] I'm No King

Recommended Posts

"Well, it is pretty," Bahr mused as he sauntered through the Ronbaru town square. There was something about this place that reminded him of the Town of Beginnings, though he was struggling to put his finger on it. Perhaps it was simple the architecture and climate, which seemed to mirror the first floor so succinctly. That being said, he hadn't ventured outside the walls yet, and it was possible that what lay beyond could pain a different picture for him.

There was still a part of him that was having trouble believing that this was as far as the Players had gotten. From the information he'd gathered so far (or, more accurately, overheard via eavesdropping), they'd been trapped here for years. So how was it that, in a castle with one hundred floors, they hadn't even managed to scale 30% of it? It was a bizarre, disembodying experience every time Bahr thought about it. At this rate, decades would pass and they would still be trapped here, at this rate. What did that mean for their flesh and blood counterparts on the other side of the veil?

In a bid to dismiss the rising anxiousness that plagued the train of thought, Bahr once again turned his attention to the town. The blanket of darkness that covered everything, save for the pockets of illumination provided by the ornate street lamps. The grass was quiet, as there was no wind to whisper through their leaves. All that could be heard was the idle chatter of the passersby, who all appeared so casual in their respective jaunts. As though there wasn't a care in the world. That everything was normal. That they weren't all, in fact, caged in a virtual prison that threatened their lives on a daily basis, while everything they had known and loved in "real life" was years behind them. And there was nothing they could do about it.

Not like Bahr even remembered the "real world," anyways.

koga_stats_100x100.jpg.c1bc364d0af717fb17519a19a9f4bb98.jpg

In all his years in Aincrad, Koga could hardly remember visiting the same floor so many times and so frequently. And yet, here he was again on Floor 27 for the...third time? in recent memory. Underground, the only light coming from the glowing crystals embedded into the floor itself. It would have been gloomy and ominous, were it not for how bright the crystals, so much so that it almost hurt to look at them.

But the luminous crystals weren't what drew Koga back here today. Today, it was the rumors of the Kingslayer. Or rather, the Kingslayer's reemergence. There had been tell of a man quite a while ago, a man who'd gone some crusade against...what, the Kings of Aincrad? Aincrad itself? The details had gotten hazier with time. The only solid piece of information (well, as solid as rumors and hearsay got) was that he'd bested the Forgotten Time King. Alone. After which he seemed to just disappear, fading back into anonymity and obscurity.

Until recently, that was. Rumors had rebounded, of sightings man who carried the Kingslayer's weapon. A sword, similar to a katana, though straight edged and shorter. And also, that he had red eyes. Not a lot to go off of, but it was something.

Koga wasn't usually the kind to go looking for people, let alone asking other for a fight but...this was a special case, he'd supposed. A lot had happened in recent times, a lot of, what he hoped, was growth. But how much had changed, how much had he evolved. It seemed the best way to test that was by seeking out those stronger than him, test himself, test them.

And so, when Koga finally set his eyes on a man bearing a straight edged, short katana, with red eyes, he approached the man with little more than a nod as greeting. "Are you the one they call 'The Kingslayer'?"

"Are you the one they call 'The Kingslayer'?"

The words tolled like a bell. Kingslayer. Now that was something that sounded familiar.

Slowly and silently, Bahr rose his crimson orbs from their idle gaze at the pavement to regard the stranger. A swordsman, similar to himself. There was something different about him, though. There was a sternness that crossed his vision that Bahr recognized. Someone with something to prove. What, though, Bahr could only guess. He suspected that, whatever it was, it had to do with him. What was it he had called him?

Kingslayer.

"It depends on who's asking," Bahr replied, tone as equally devoid of expression as his visage. "For what purpose do you ask, swordsman?"

It was better to play his cards close to the vest, for now. Bahr wasnt sure what the stranger wanted, nor who the Kingslayer was supposed to be. It could just as easily be him, but how could he know that for sure?

"I'm waiting."

The man slowly turned and look at Koga, eyes peering at him with coldness, an unfamiliar chill that Koga put his finger on. Both unexpected, and yet, perhaps it should have been, given what great lengths that the man must've resorted to in his crusades.

"I'm waiting."

"A friendly challenge," Koga stated, his tone lacking any cheer, despite his words. "I'd like to see where my strength lies at present. What better way to test that than to challenge the man who took on Aincrad itself?" Between his first floor boss fight, taking on Calming the Soul, and pushing himself to solidify his build, carve out his niche, the man felt he'd made great strides in the recent months. But the question still remained, how far had he come? And how far did he still have left to go?

A few short gestures, and a duel prompt would appear before the Kingslayer, and though it detailed the specifics of the duel, Koga laid them out anyways. "Fifty percent. No additional buffs but our skills and our gear. Is this acceptable to you? It's not like you have anything to lose if I come out on top."

"A challenge?" Bahr repeated, incredulity written across his visage. But before he could inquire further, a panel populated that answered all of his questions for him. A duel, sanctioned by the system, to prove his mettle against the warrior that stood before him. Crimson orbs flickered upward toward the youth again, illuminated with an azure undertone from the luminescent screen that hovered just below. They were focused and methodical, inspecting the man for any hints of ill-will. Bahr had heard tales, however tall, of other Players manipulating the dueling system to kill others. As Bahr hadn't yet had the opportunity to measure his strength against the other Players in Aincrad, it was difficult to gauge whether or not a squabble like this would put him at risk. Then again, this could be the perfect opportunity to unearth that very information.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

"Fifty percent. No additional buffs but our skills and our gear. Is this acceptable to you? It's not like you have anything to lose if I come out on top."

He listened carefully as the stranger - dubbed "Koga" by the panel - explained the terms of the duel. Though, Bahr could read for himself. He hadn't mentioned anything that Bahr hadn't expected upon simply looking at the screen. Though, no items or buffs was an important distinction. How comfortable had Bahr become using those in his ventures? Had he come to rely on them too heavily? He was about to find out.

He tapped accept. The panel dismissed itself, and a countdown began. Without a word, Bahr's hand rose to grasp the hilt of his blade, slowly unsheathing it as the seconds slipped away. The mask he'd had adorned since the beginning unveiled itself, unfolding into view only polygonal fractal at a time until it masked the entirety of his face. Once it had finished, a bassy hum and pulse of orange signified his readiness.

There need not be words now. It was time for action.

The man opposite Koga tapped his prompt without a word, the translucent panels before them disappearing in an instant, and immediately a periodic beeping began, numbers floating high in the air between them. It seemed that this Kingslayer wasn't much for talking. That suited Koga just fine. The appearance of the countdown timer was talk enough for him.

Drawing his sword, the quiet rasp of wood and steel Koga took up a mid-guard. Their eyes locked onto each others for a moment, before the Kingslayer's disappeared behind a mask, unfolding to cover his face. Koga breathed in deeply, relaxed his shoulders, exhaled, then shifted his gaze from the glowing mask to his opponent's shoulders. The location where all movements were hinted at. The cotton wrapping around his katana's hilt creaked and strained as Koga tightened his grip, the time for action drawing closer and closer.

The numbers kept ticking down, each second passing by with a sharp tone.

Bahr stood with an open stance, steadying his breathing as the clock counted down.

3.

He crouched slightly, bending at the knees but keeping his shoulders square. He leaned forward with anticipation, arms hanging loosely off to either side as he sized up his mark.

2.

Fingers tightened around the hilt of Forgotten King's Spite. Bahr's view narrowed down into a razor focus. All that existed now was him and his opponent.

1.

This was it.

Fight!

In a blistering display of agility, Bahr closed the distance between himself and his adversary in the blink of an eye. He reared back his weapon as though to chop with it, then let it fall. But, before it met with its mark, Bahr abruptly canceled the attack and dashed backward. As he sailed back through the air, his figure would seemingly dissolve into a mesh of triangular panels obscuring his frame. They folded, and overlapped, and splintered until nothing remained. Where Bahr had once been, now the man would see nothing.

A feint attack, he'd heard it called. An opportunity to gauge the reflexes and habits of one's opponent. And from where Bahr now stood, he had a bird's eye view of how Koga would react to the situation. So long as he wasn't spotted, there would be plenty to glean from the youth's next actions.

Koga's eyes monitored his opponent's every movements. The bend of the knees, the forward posture. Energy gathering in his legs, a sharp movement to initiate. As soon as the timer disappeared, the fighter shot forward, nearly a blur as his weapon drew upwards to strike. Koga held his ground though, his wrists twisting, preparing to deflect the attack, just enough to leave an opening for a quick strike. The attack came and-

The man bounced backwards, a feint, disengaging and disappearing, as if being swallowed into another dimension entirely as polygons wrapped around his body until nothing remained. 'Fucking stealth players...' Koga thought to himself, an increasingly frequent complaint.

Koga's eyes darted around the field, searching for any sign of movement. Nothing. Just the quiet battlefield. A brief bloom of deep blue light circled around Koga's feet, more discolored embers than his typical flames. Well, if that was how the man wanted to play it...

Truth be told, Koga had never fought a stealth player before. He had never been the kind to go looking to pick fights with others. This was a new experience for him...he was going to have to learn how to fight all over again. Well, the best way to do that was to get right into the thick of it. This seemed to qualify.

Koga activates Parry

Bahr walked alongside the swordsman, studying him as his eyes darted frantically around the square. He cocked his head as he examined Koga, noting the unease and anxiousness the youth hid behind his hardened facade. He may not have flinched physically when Bahr approached, but it was clear that he was out of his comfort zone.

Curious.

Blue hues ignited beneath Koga's feet, briefly illuminating his figure before dissipating once more. An activation of some sort of skill, surely. And judging by the stiffness of his stance, a defensive one, at that. He aimed to punish Bahr for attacking him, though Bahr hadn't an inkling of how, exactly. He supposed there was only one way to find out.

The attack was a simple one, as it wasn't meant to deal much damage on its own, particularly. It was the seed that it planted that Bahr was after. Flashy antics were only useful insofar as they mitigated risk. Without knowing what the swordsman was capable of, Bahr was as risk averse as one could imagine. He rose his sword, lined its tip up with Koga's spine between the shoulder blades, and thrusted.

But the attack didn't go quite as planned. Koga's body moved with impossibly quick reactivity as though carried through the motions by the system itself, turning before Forgotten King's Spite made its mark. The steel of their blades hissed as they glided across one another, Bahr's strike diverting from its original course and sinking into Koga's hip. Bahr's frame would dissolve back into existence as the sword sank through his adversary's skin and bone, fractals cascading away and revealing him in bits and pieces. No sooner had Bahr been revealed than he found Koga's elbow smashed against his mask.

He staggered back for a moment, his HUD breedling as an icon by his health bar heralded a "stunned" status. It seemed that Koga had a trick or two up his sleeve, but the damage had been done. He'd be feeling it by now. Black sludge pumping through his veins, visibly pulsing beneath his scorched and blistered skin. That same blood pouring from the wound in his hip in a viscous obsidian ooze. It was working through him now, as intended, and Bahr would have smirked were his rigid body capable in that moment.

As it turned out, the Kingslayer had his own tricks.

A deep hum resonated briefly before culminating in a bassy pulse, Bahr's body emitting a luminescent multicolored flash. All at once, the light and noise ceased. Bahr straightened his posture and rolled his neck, seemingly uncaring of his stance or how open he might be to a more thorough counterattack. Once he felt more comfortable, his frame would begin to distort once more. But this time, rather than disappearing, he would remain distorted - a blob of polygonal fractals with no particular form or shape. A perpetually undulating mass of glitchiness, only resembling Bahr's original frame in the loosest sense possible.

It wouldn't be impossible for Koga to land a strike now, but it would be more difficult. It was time to measure just how skilled the swordsman was.

For what felt like an eternity, nothing happened. The opening moments of their battle were not filled frenetic clashes of steel as Koga had initially expected. Instead, it was held breath. Careful listening for the slightest sound that would give away his opponent. But all Koga was met with was the low rumble of the Floor's atmosphere, droning into his ear, the embers at his feet snapping and popping just within his range of hearing.

And then there was the quiet, almost imperceptible sound of blades of grass rubbing against each other. A shift of weight as a boot touched the ground.

Cardinal took over immediately, and Koga surrendered himself to the system, allowed it to control his movements as he body turned, his blade dipping to  push away the his opponent's weapon. A brief bloom of sparks, punctuated by an equally brief splash of red against Koga's hip. The wound did not deter him though. In the perfect position to counterstrike, the motion of his blade's downward stroke flowed smoothly into the twist of hips, the raise of an elbow, striking the other man's mask with enough force to stagger him backwards.

'Press the attack.'

The only thought in his head as Koga moved forward, katana low and to his side. The stunned status icon effect flickered above his opponents head, until it disappeared altogether. There was the briefest moment of confusion, as Koga was unsure how or why the stun had been dispelled so quickly. But it didn't matter. Okami, the trusty companion that he was filled that brief moment in time, leaping at their shared opponent, claws raking across the man's outer thigh. Just enough for Koga to close the distance.

The masked combatant's form flickered, glitched and wavered all just a moment too late. Already upon him, or rather, past him, Tsuki no Hikari suddenly roared with deep blue flame before biting into the man's side, drawing a bloody swath across his abdomen.

Koga skidded to a halt just behind the 'Kingslayer'. "Is this really all you've got?" Koga found himself saying before the thought had even fully formed in his mind. "This is all the 'Kingslayer' can offer me?" His brows furrowed in annoyance. The corner's of his lips curled back into a snarl. "If you're not going to give this fight all you have, I might as well just walk away now."

Disrespectful. That was the only word for it. If this was all this supposedly legendary warrior was going to give him, Koga had no care for him. Between two warriors, what else was there but to put your best foot forward? To give no ground, take no shit, or at the least dish it all back tenfold. That was the only law of combat Koga recognized, and to him, it seemed that this 'Kingslayer' was spitting on it.

Bahr had attempted to set himself up to be more difficult to hit, but it appeared his efforts had been futile. The line Koga carved straight through him sent his health bar plummeting at an alarming rate. Whatever small measure of time the Stun had been afflicted against him, it had been more than enough to allow Koga to close the small distance that had existed between them.

Again his HUD breedled at him, this time indicating two other statuses. Burn and Rend. He could feel the heat inside of him, whatever amalgamation of ones and zeros comprised the interior of his torso. Did he even truly have organs, in this world? He didn't know. All he could tell for certain was that he was burning from the inside out.

"This is all the 'Kingslayer' can offer me?" Koga's annoyance was evident, both in his tone and expression. As Bahr turned to face him, he would see a completely different person than the man who had first approached him. Brows furrowed and ugly as their hairs split and pricked in odd directions. Lips contorted into a frown that wrinkled his chin. He wasn't just annoyed, he was furious. "If you're not going to give this fight all you have, I might as well just walk away now."

Bahr remained silent for a moment, posture as relaxed as it had been before Koga's strike in spite of the Burn's influence and the continual drainage of his health pool. After a moment, he finally responded. "My apologies," he replied, voice modulated through the mask in a way that deepened and contorted his voice. The response had been cool. Calm. There was no urgency in the way he spoke. "I was under the impression that this was a 'friendly challenge.' It seems I was mistaken."

The youth was practically bubbling with excitement and anticipation. He had something to prove. But he didn't know that Bahr wasn't the man Koga thought he was. Whatever accomplishments Bahr had claimed in his past life, they were all detached from him now. He couldn't remember any of it. And while he still clearly possessed some remnants of his prior muscle memory, it wasn't enough to make up for whatever true experience he'd had before.

After a few more moments, Forgotten King's Spite evaporated from Bahr's left hand in a ribbon of light. As it departed, Dawn's Demise filled in the absence of a weapon in his right palm. "I have no way of knowing for certain," Bahr began, raising the blade to eye level to inspect it, "but I have reason to believe this is the weapon I used back then. Every time I hold it, it feels at home in my hand.

"The one you saw before has always felt hollow and weak by comparison. It doesn't swing properly. It's a clunky little thing, in the way it's so light I can't really feel it. This..." He rose the blade and allowed his arm to fall a couple times, as though to test the weight. "This one feels right. Like an extension of myself."

Bahr's arm, and consequently his blade, fell to the side. He crouched at the knees again, leaning forward to prepare himself for the next strike. "Moreover, now it's in my dominant hand." His mask hid his smirk. "Let's start over."

The man's voice warbled, modified via his mask, the sci-fi-esque sound foreign, despite Koga's familiarity with the genre. It had been too long since he'd seen Star Wars. The modulator might as well have been witchcraft here. But what the voice sounded like on the surface was of little consequence. No, it was the tone, the words. The even tone more dangerous than anyone's shouting or screaming or threats.

And yet, Koga's frown turned into a small smile.

"'Friendly' doesn't mean a half-assed effort," Koga replied, a hint of mirth and excitement in his voice. "But, since we're on the same page now...give it all to me."

And oh, how it was that the man seemed quite ready to fulfill Koga's wishes. The glee, no the battlelust in Koga's eyes, to the average player, it would have sent shivers down their spine. Fighting a player, it was so much better than a mob, or perhaps, even a Floor Boss. One on one, nothing to distract the two men from their tasks, from driving each other to the dirt.

That was all that Koga wanted from this fight.

And so, as the weapon's were changed, their glowing silhouettes disappearing and manifesting in order, the promise of the use of his proper weapon, his dominant hand, Koga's foot shifted backwards. His grip tightened around his katana. He afforded the Kingslayer a small nod. A fresh go of things.

And Koga launched forward. He wasn't the tricky kind of fighter. Not like this Kingslayer seemed to be. He was direct, focused. And his focus was entirely on striking the man again. His opponent would recognize the attack from early, a quick dash, his sword held low and to the side.

The smart combatant would know what was coming next.

Koga's blade swiped in arc, aiming once more to cut it's way through it's target's stomach. No flames this time. No black glow either. Crimson instead. The same crimson as his eyes. The system began to take over as Koga got closer. Committed fully, he was moving so fast he would not stop until he had passed through his opponent.
