[F14/PP] Of Nine Hells... | <<Cull of the Dead>>

Recommended Posts

She vaguely remembered a stint within the floor once before, but it had been so long that she couldn’t quite remember if she’d ever encountered the mentioned quest or not. Regardless, it was too much to pass up – especially if it truly did provide the tech skill that the message mentioned.

Her hand hesitated over the message – she wanted to send it, but she was apprehensive of the response she would get. Their most recent parting had been…well, she couldn’t say happy – but it certainly hadn’t been aggressive or horrible, either.

Sighing aloud, she read over the piece once more. Her eyes roamed across the words as she tried to find anything in the message that would let her make a decision. The words seemed simple enough – and she couldn’t find anything that would say could be construed as beyond face value. She still wasn’t sure if it was a good idea or not, though.

To: Koga
From: Nari-Lanreth
Message: Hey, so got word recently that there’s been some changes to the Cull of the Dead quest. Was wondering if you’d be up for…helping with it. Figured we could, y’know, talk a bit more…anyways, let me know if you want to hit it up or not – I’ll be at the teleporter on Floor 14 in about three hours or so, so if you want just meet me there? Kaybye for now. Hope to see you soon.

Growling to herself, she hit the send button. Throwing herself onto her bed, head covered by arm, she considered what the absolute worst could be.

-----

The floor itself reminded her of the imagery of hell from numerous games. There was nothing here that she would call appealing, and as Yuki chirped at her feet – clearly not enjoying the scenery either, she felt herself pulling her hood closer around herself – the fox ears bouncing slightly on her head. She had to shoo the little winter fox away from the tail of her hoodie, which dangled in a teasing way, as if demanding the familiar play with it.

“Okay, maybe the tail is a bit much…but it’s just so cute.” She whispered to Yuki as the fox’s eye hovered over the ice blue fluff that hung from Nari’s backside. Don’t. You. Dare.

Koga hadn't noticed the message appear in his inbox for the first few hours, too absorbed in the book he was reading for probably the hundredth time. However, when he did notice the message, he set aside the leather bound volume for a moment, swiping open the messenger window. The smallest of frowns crossed over his lips as he read the name of the sender.

Well, message received Nari. And a long winded message at that. Though, she was right, they needed to talk more. Koga checked the clock, and the message's time stamp. If he wanted to make it, he'd have to leave now. But that would also require getting off the couch. And Koga was quite comfortable. Certainly too comfortable to bother with actually going to help Nari put the beat down on a bunch of mobs (tougher, though they were)...Yeah, staying home and reading sounded good.

...

...

...

The sound of the book slamming down on the coffee table as Koga stood and equipped his gear cut throught he silent room, causing Okami's ears to perk up. "C'mon boy," Koga grumbled as he opened the door, "NIGHT'll kill us if we let anything happen to her."

---

The teleporter flashed it's blue light, announcing the arrival of Koga and Okami. The man's eyes scanned around the Plaza until they finally settled on the familiar purple head of hair. "Yo," Koga greeted as he approached, hands in his pockets. "No NIGHT?" the man asked, getting straight to business. Or rather, the lack of it. No AoE player between the two of them. To be fair, redoing this quest wasn't exactly the epitome of fun, so Koga would understand and reluctance from the woman, but still, NIGHT's presence would have made all of this a lot quicker. "Hope you weren't planning on soloing this quest if I hadn't shown up."

A brief smile as the other made the jest about her partner, before she stuck her tongue out in response. “What if I was planning on heading out on my own? Worried about my safety, are we?”

Even with the jesting, a smile touched her face - even if there was another reasoning for it, she liked the idea that he cared about her surviving. It somehow felt...invigorating, after everything. She doubted that Koga was invested in her survival without some other purpose – not that she figured he was nefarious by any means, simply that he wouldn’t care if it weren’t for a specific reason.

“I’ve heard this quest is difficult, so I doubt I’d be able to solo it even if I wanted to – supposed the queen at the end is…well, a real bitch. Takes one to know one and all, I guess?” She pulled up her menu and glanced at the limited information she had for the quest itself, giving a half-shrug before picking herself up from the seat she’d found on a nearby low-sitting wall. Dismissing the vest and casual clothing, she was left in her heavy battle dress, the armour itself glinting a shifting royal and violet purple against the sunlight. “Supposedly we just head outside this settlement, and encounter the start of the quest? Sounds almost too simple, for all the hype everyone gives it…”

Making sure Koga was following, she began their trek out of Stonewall, ignoring the majority of NPCs and other players as they made their way along. “You’re still running that DPS power build, right? I’ve managed to bridge out towards tank and…well, not quite support, but crystal powers. Consumables, designed to boost…as much as possible. I think it’ll come in help here.”

Downing one of the potions she’d pulled from her inventory, she smiled as the taste flowed through her throat. Holding one out for Koga, she offered the concoction with a bitter smile – more at the flavour, than anything else.

"Hell, no" Koga responded to Nari's jest with another of his own. "I'm worried about mine. NIGHT'd castrate me if you up and died 'cause I didn't show up." Joke or not, that probably wasn't an exaggeration. Koga was loathe to think about what kind of pain NIGHT would inflict upon him if Nari died on his watch.

He did snort in genuine amusement, however, when Nari allowed a self-deprecating joke to leave his lips. At least she was self-aware that way. "Yeah, about her..." Koga thought for a moment. Actually, Koga wasn't really sure about Beelzebub. Or whether or not he'd reappear again at the end of this run. It didn't really seem like the guy was entirely scripted, like most of the other floor bosses. There wasn't really a guarantee that he'd show up again. Or that they'd have to fight that sick, twisted version of Lilith again. "Just...be on the look out for a stage two..." Koga finally said, deciding it best to maybe not mention the mysterious floor boss. At least this way she had some kind of heads up in case he decided to make another grand and fiery appearance.

The man started to follow after Nari as she started to head out of the town and offered him a crystal. The man glanced at it for a moment, wondering how much he really needed the thing. It'd be a bit of a waste if he just avoided all the attacks, or regened as fast as they could deal damage...but, better safe than sorry. "Yeah, thanks," the man said, taking the potion, popping the cork, and downing it all in one go. Try as he might, he still couldn't avoid the taste. Shuddering, the man shook his head, before tossing the bottle aside, only for it to disappear into small blue shard.

"Uh, Harken should be just up ahead," the man said after recovering from his distaste, gesturing just up the road where a few red cloaked guards were getting their asses handed to them by a familiar woman. Markedly more human looking than the last time he'd seen her. "Gonna need to hang back a second and let them eat shit before the quest actually starts."

‘A stage two? Ominous, even from him.’ Nari pushed the thought aside, knowing that if there truly was anything to worry about, that Koga likely would’ve told her. Likely. He did just admit that he’d be castrated, if he did let her die, and even with all his bravado the man didn’t seem like someone who took pleasure in losing…well, acquaintances.

“Oh, alright. We just…watch them get obliterated, then find the quest in the remains? That sounds…Cardinal-ish. Too bad we can’t just leap in and finish her off here, and skip the entire quest though. That would make it really easy.” She wasn’t sure if this was the final boss, or just a prelude, but she figured the banter would at least alleviate some of the fidgeting that would otherwise occur if they just waited and watched.

The moment the conflict ended – the woman being driven back after a successful strike, and some unheard commentary passed back and forth – Nari was on the move, heading for what was likely the leader of the group. She had to admit the big axe was interesting to see in action, but she wasn’t looking forward to the conversation they’d have to suffer through.

“Hi there, Big Axe Man? I’m here about some sort of undead issue?” The man seemed to ignore her for a few moments, and Nari passed a confused glare at Koga before her temper got the better of her. “Hey asshole. I’m talking to you.”

“Lilith tested us again. She's retreated for now, but will return. She does a damn good job keeping us on the ropes.” The man seemed to speak as if there was no outburst, oblivious to the obvious annoyance of the player. As the NPC continued prattling on, Nari leaned into Koga, whispering just enough so that the other player could hear her.

“Is it just me, or is Captain Dickhead living up to his namesake?” She managed to catch the end bit about the weapon in the keep, following the gaze and guidance of the NPC. Seemingly content that the players had all the information they required, the NPC and companions suddenly turned, leaving back towards wherever they spent their free time.

“Well, that was super informative. Go find the magical sword and defeat the unkillable vampire lady. Love it.” Hoping Koga didn’t quite catch sight of it, she lifted her index and middle finger in a V shape towards the Captain, her palm inwards towards herself. Turning back towards the keep, she began to make her way across the terrain. Pulling up her inventory as she went, she consumed another of her potions - preparing herself for what would likely await them at the keep. “I guess we go collect the magic sword now. Should be easy enough…”

Oh, alright. We just…watch them get obliterated, then find the quest in the remains? That sounds…Cardinal-ish. Too bad we can’t just leap in and finish her off here, and skip the entire quest though. That would make it really easy.

"Pssh, you can say that again," Koga replied as he crossed his arms and shifted his weight to one leg, (re)watching the lone woman single-handedly mop the floor with Harken and co. "Woulda saved NIGHT and I a lot of trouble." The quest had been an ordeal and a half. Near-endless waves of enemies, hellfire, creepy grotesque vampire lady...yeah, the quest had it all.

Harken dealt his final blow only moments later, drawing the attention of both players as Lilith shouted some inane ramblings as always before morphing into a swarm of bats and flying away to safety. Koga followed behind Nari as she approached Harkon and addressed him, only to be ignored. Much to the chagrin of Nari. "Scripted NPC, don't think about it too much," Koga said dismissively. Man, he wished there was a skip cutscene button sometimes.

The pair then turned away and began to head towards their first objective, Koga leading the way only because he'd already been there. "So I'm guessing NIGHT didn't tell you about what we went through to find that stupid sword, huh?" Koga asked, as he accepted another of Nari's offered potions. She would not be saying 'easy' if NIGHT had. The whole ordeal had been an affair certainly worthy of this floors theme, if nothing else. "Zombies. Endless fucking zombies. And some robots. 'Cause Cardinal says 'fuck you.'" Seriously, the engine behind their suffering was a truly cruel one sometimes.

Nari’s head turned towards Koga, a sudden smile breaking across her face at the mention. Almost bouncing along the path beside him, her voice trembled with excitement.

Zombies? Like, actual zombies? Like in the movies and stuff? Oh, oh! Do they moan, too? Like uuuhhhhh….” She held her arms up in a zombielike fashion, mimicking the typical movements and sounds, before breaking into a laugh. “Oh, I used to love Resident Evil. Are they anything like that?”

She pulled out another potion bottle, downing the thing before glancing at it with a curious gaze. Almost as an after thought, she spoke her query aloud. “Hey, do you think consuming too many of these things has any sort of negative impact…?”

Her gaze was torn from their conversation as they reached the keep itself. Her head cocked to her left as she stopped to look over it. “Well, this certainly fits the Vampire-Zombie theme…”

The keep itself appeared worn down, clearly not seeing much upkeep from its undead owners. She let her eyes wander over the entirety of what was visible – stopping only as they rested upon the sword laying in the hand of what appeared to be a skeleton.

“Definitely not a trap, not in any way whatsoever. Do you want to spring it, or should I?” She gave Koga a brief grin, before raising an arm in the direction of the keep itself. Waiting to see what he would do, she let her eyes glance between him and the sword in the distance.

Koga chuckled quietly at Nari's impersonation of a zombie. The next thing he knew, she might be dancing to Michael Jackson's Thriller. "No, they're more like Draugr in Skyrim, if you've ever played that," the man replied as she downed yet another potion.

"Uh, I'm not sure to be honest. I doubt it, but if you ever have to fight a floor boss, those fights cap at six buffs for some reason. So, maybe don't rely on too many at a time?" Although, to be fair, six buffs were a lot to begin with.

While Nari stopped to gaze at the gothic keep, Koga didn't give it much pause, having already seen and explored the stone structure. "Yeah it does, creepy moving suits of armor and all," Koga replied in a dry tone. "If we're fast though, we might be able to skip the Constructs. I was a bit lower levelled, and my build was a bit different, so we might be able to get through this without having to fight those bastards."

She cocked her head towards the keep again, before taking the first step inside. Her eyes darted, the shield and spear held at the ready…but nothing jumped out at her. A single quick glance back towards Koga, ensuring he was behind her, before she continued into the courtyard itself. Her tension only grew as nothing seemed to leap out at her presence – the trap seemingly more and more likely the further in she got. She felt like a cornered fox, ready to spring and snap at anything that even looked at her wrong.

As she reached the sword’s resting place, skeletal hand reaching as if for the sky, she finally relaxed slightly. There was no obvious sign of anything rushing out at them, but Nari wasn’t going to take that for granted. Tossing her chin towards, the sword, she signalled for Koga to take it – her eyes busy roaming the area, looking for anything that could signify any sign of threat to them.

As her eyes roamed, she could see the shifting shapes in the shadows, slowly creeping forward as they seemed to be drawn to the presence of the two. Setting her shield and sliding her feet into a ready stance, and pulling her spear back. Calling over her shoulder, she maintained eye contact on the few she could see, watching and waiting for them to strike out towards the two of them.

“We’ve got company. Ugly things, don’t look anything like zombies from Resident Evil…and they’re wearing the same cloaks as the guys we were fighting – think they’re related?” She considered her options as she spoke, deciding that she’d wait for them to come to her – it was better to hold the advantage, sometimes. Besides – she had no idea what these things were capable of, and she didn’t want to be the one to engage something hap hazardously.

Just like last time, a Red Cloak burst from beneath Koga feet, forcing the man to leap into the air backwards, drawing his sword and slicing at the clawing hands beneath him, meeting only air. Landing on his feet beside Nari with a huff, he said "Pretty sure the Red Cloaks used to own this Keep. Not sure what happened to them, or what the deal is with the robots but, here we are anyways."

The man sighed as more of the Red Cloak Revenants popped up out of the ground, clearly dissatisfied with the pair's trespassing. "Keep an ear out for a weird whirring sound...kinda like computer fans, if you still remember what that sounds like," Koga advised, thinking back to his and NIGHT's last battle here. "No constructs yet, but that's a decent early warning sign. If they do get up, save 'em for last. Don't want the Z-bies to turn on anymore of them."

Only partially listening, Nari nodded. A few seconds later – as she suddenly registered exactly what was said, she threw a confused look back to her companion. “Wait, did you say whirring noise? Constructs? You mean robots? We’re fighting Zombies and robots???”

Her question was interrupted as one of the undead launched itself towards her – forcing her to bring her shield up between herself and it. The thudding impact against the shield shook her arm, but before she could retaliate another had begun to swarm her.

Cursing slightly – forced to disengage and retreat slightly – she moved her way back to Koga, determined to keep herself between him and the undead. Casting her eyes about, she realised that she needed to do something to give him the breathing room he required to work quickly.

“Morríghan curse siúd a resist an níos faide anonn.” She spoke the words evenly and clearly, but as the activated skill took hold, she could see the heads of the undead turn towards her, their attention forced upon Nari. “That’s right you absolute ugly, undead filth. Come dance with me. Let Morríghan’s kiss embrace you.”

Stepping forward to meet them, she called over her shoulder to Koga. “Alright, I’ll hold them here – you focus on downing these ugly things. I’ll do what I can to make sure they don’t pay attention to you.”

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure I mentioned the constructs before," Koga commented as he stepped back behind Nari's shield, placing a hand on her shoulder pauldron so as to follow her movements without needing to focus on her. "Like I said, if we're fast we won't have to worry about them. Unlikely, but we can hope."

The woman cursed in, again, what Koga could only assume was Gaelic. "Mind speaking English?" Koga answered back as she finished taunting their enemies. "I can't laugh at whatever you're saying to them if I don't know what you're saying."

The dark-haired man then broke formation for a moment, stepping just past the to thrust the point of his katana into the chest of one of the Revenants, before withdrawing it as the wound began to smolder and retreating back behind the shield again. "Or I can start cursing them in Greek. Actually, does that skill even work with other languages?"

The hand on her shoulder caused her to jump slightly, the unexpected touch pulling her attention from the creatures in front of her. She glanced over, noticing the tension in the other player’s frame. His words took a moment to reach her ears as she considered his attention to the field, realising – not for the first time – how capable of a fighter he was.

“Sorry – habit…it’s nothing super interesting, anyways…but I’ll try in the future…” Her words fumbled as she returned her focus to the fight at hand. With a smile, she answered his implied question without turning around to look at him. “Well, it seems to work for me. It would be kind of entertaining to listen to you spew Greek out at the different systems. I’d definitely pay to see that!”

She returned her attention to the creatures in front of her as Koga launched an attack of his own, slamming into one of the creatures and causing it to stumble slightly under the ferocity of his attack. Nari knew she couldn’t match his pure power, but she wondered if there wasn’t something she could do to help up. She’d barely even noticed as the creatures had laid into her – her armour absorbing most of the impact, but as her health bar dipped slightly, only to be refilled – she suddenly realised the danger they were truly in.

The sound of whirring had caught her attention as one of the mechanical beings came to life – the robots that Koga had mentioned springing forth in a limited way, making its way towards the duo. Casting aside her doubt, she realised that she needed to take a far more active role in this fight.

Leaping forward she let her spear lash out, focusing on one of the closest Red Cloaks in an attempt to drive it back. She knew that there was only so much she could do, and as another of the mechanical creatures slowly came to life she began to question if they’d made a mistake coming here alone.

“Hey uh…Koga, we may be in a bit of trouble. If you’ve got a trick up your sleeve…now may be a good time to consider it…”

Koga's eyes flicked over to Nari as he felt her flinch, more so to assess if she'd taken any damage, than any assumption that he'd startled her. Confirming that she was fine, he turned his attention back to the growing crowd of enemies, augmented by the arrival of the first construct, the whirring of it's gears threatening to lash at them.

"Hey uh…Koga, we may be in a bit of trouble. If you’ve got a trick up your sleeve…now may be a good time to consider it…" Nari said.

The first of the Revenant's attempted to sneak an overhead slash past Nari's shield, but the rusted weapon was met by Koga's blade, parrying it aside, before swiping the sword at its neck, lopping it's head off.

"I'm working on it!" Koga called back as he took cover back behind Nari's shield, the body of the now headless revenant crumpling to the ground and burning away, just as another mechanical construct whirred to life.

Koga's eyes flicked to each of the enemies, one by one, assessing their strength. "We'll be fine. You heal back all their damage. Just stay calm," the man said with an even voice. This was going to take forever...

She threw a quick glance towards Koga’s process, watching as he struck down one of the Red Cloaks. Her elation didn’t last long, as another of the creatures rose to the challenge of facing them. She felt her enthusiasm slip away as the newest creature joined them, her shield sinking slightly as she wondered if they hadn’t walked into something far more dangerous than either of them could handle. No, trust Koga. He’s been through this before. If he says we’re alright, we’re alright…I just need to keep their focus on me, and away from him…

“Alright, let’s do this then…fucking zombie-assed-shitheads.” The curses were out of her mouth before she even realised what she was saying, and for a moment a look of innocent confusion flashed across her face, before being wiped away, back to the battle ready, hardened face.

Spinning her spear in her hand, she brought the tip back, pausing only long enough to activate the sword art before lunging forward. The purple trail of her sword art seemed to hover on the air behind her blade as it flashed toward the Red Cloak, trying desperately to do something useful for her partner.

The whistling of blades seemed to never end as Koga thrust his weapon into another Revenant's chest. Not that it really cared. The walking carcass simply pressed forward along side it's friends, swinging it's weapon wildly, forcing Koga to duck as the blades clanged off of Nari's armor. "Fuck off!" the man swore, kicking off the impaled revenant.

The clanking of yet another construct filled the air and Koga rolled his eyes in annoyance. Three of them now. And six red clad revenants that just wouldn't fucking die! "Ya know, next time, I'm picking the quest. I am so sick of these fuckers." Seriously, how was it that Nari was always getting him into trouble. First NIGHT, then fishing, what was next? Grass touching!? God forbid.

"How are you holding up?" the man asked checking in with the tank, noticing that her HP gauge had dropped. "You hangin' in there?"

"I'm...fine. Focus on...aren't you supposed to be the DPS here...cause...y'know...kinda feels like only one of us is pulling their weight here..." She pushed against the nearby construct, frustrated that yet another of the things had somehow come to life. It certainly felt like they were on the verge of being overrun, if someone didn't do something - and preferably quickly. Still, Nari wasn't entirely sure what could be done - Koga and herself had already been hammering away at the things, hoping to catch a break, and yet it somehow felt like more of the damned things were showing up with each passing second. "Hey, I'm...gonna try something stupid. Just...follow my lead!"

She pushed against the construct, knocking it out of the way and sliding straight into one of the Revenant's that seemed to be behind all the mischief. A wicked smile upon her face, Nari glared at the thing as she brought her spear up and into a ready position. "Hope you like your cloak toasty warm, because here's hoping that it comes out that way for you!" Without pause, she thrust the spear forward, aiming for the centre of the thing's chest, and activating the sword art as the spear moved. She could only hope it would be enough to do some serious harm to the thing, and maybe give them a bit of a break.

"...kinda feels like only one of us is pulling their weight here..."
Koga shot Nari a glare as soon as the words had left her mouth. "I'm a duelist. Ya know, one on one fights, that's where I excel." The man lunged forward, his weapon cleaving through the air, alight with black flame again as it tore the Revenant that Nari had targeted into two. "If you want AoE, go ask NIGHT instead." Not that he was certain that was a good idea, but that was the woman's expertise at least.

Again, the godforsaken sound of another construct booting up. "I swear to fucking God, Nari, if we die here, I'm gonna kill you," the man muttered as he dodged and weaved his way through a short series of blows from their enemies, a bronze blade clipping the man's cheek and leaving a savage gash behind.

Koga sucked air in through his teeth as he assessed the battle. "Might be smarter to walk away right now," he advised.

Tiring, was the word that Nari would have used to describe the combat they were currently in. Although she was taking the majority of the hits, she could tell that they were getting slowly overwhelmed - one of the Red Cloaked creatures managing to slip by and land a strike against Koga. Without turning to look, she called out towards the black haired swordsman, the strain from the fight covering her words. "Sorry - one got by me. Shit there's a lot of them...um...but there don't seem to be any more appearing right now!"

She tried to put a positive spin on it, hoping that the ambush was slowly coming to a close. If the last few seconds were anything to judge by, it seemed like they might be slowly getting the upper hand - possibly leading them towards a positive conclusion. Or so Nari hoped, whether that would come to pass or not was yet to be seen. Just need to hold out a bit longer...stupid annoying zombie like vampire asshole things...

"You good back there? I thought I heard whining!" She grinned even as another hand slammed against her shield, forcing her back a step before she ground her feet in and pushed back against the creature in front of her. "Never knew you were a quitter this early into a fight, oh great and powerful swordsman."
