History

Spoiler

Zen grew up in a world that existed beyond the digital. Born to a traditional Japanese family, his parent’s believed that the growth in technology was corrupting the ideal values and ethics of the world – that the push towards the online was in essence tearing away the humanity of society. This left Zen without much online interaction until his late teenage years, when his schooling was forced to an online curriculum, and his access to forums, games and other entertainment venues was officially opened.

Diving into video games with a passion, Zen found his life turned around when he realised the avenue that online forums could provide. Suddenly able to express himself in a way beyond what he had been raised within, he fell headfirst into the virtual world – expressing an even keener engagement once virtual reality mass player games became a reality for the common folk.

From a young age, Zen was engaged in numerous martial arts, from the traditional Kendo, Aikido, Karate, Kyudo and the less commonly found Yabusame. While most were little more than after school activities that his parents had dumped him in, Zen took a love to Kendo and Kyudo – enjoying the challenges found in both arts, and the technique required to master each.

It was this connection that led him towards Sword Art Online – seeing a similarity in the art of Kendo within the game, and desiring to test his skills in a virtual full dive. The game was everything that he had expected and more – providing him a virtual world where he could put all of his talents to the test, and attempt to overcome the skills that he had found limitations with.

Almost immediately Zen had fallen in love with the game, desiring nothing more than to remain forever within its confines. His wish was met far too quickly, however, and as the announcement was made Zen found himself cursing himself for the desire – blaming himself for trapping everyone within the game.

A natural social butterfly, Zen found himself pulled towards grouping people together in the hopes of working as a team to success. This, however, often led to lack of actual development, as Zen found himself quickly overpowering the many more reserved personalities, unconsciously driving away other players with his forward behaviour.

For a time, Zen found himself alone – driven to near depressive states as he tried to understand why everyone quickly departed from his company, before eventually realising the problem within. Realising that the situation had changed, Zen forced himself to a more reserved attitude, in an attempt to find a way to draw more people in towards himself, and back into a social centre.

Virtues

Flaws

Spoiler

Compassionate. Zen cares about the feelings, behaviours and mental wellbeing of others – and while he may attempt to talk an individual out of silence, he understands that some people require little more than an ear, even if that ear always has something to say. Within Sword Art Online, Zen has found that his compassion towards others is often a double-edged sword – allowing him to connect, but also becoming overwhelmed by the needs of those around him. Regardless, he has not lost his desire towards assisting others, and maintains his personal beliefs towards those in need – never turning away another player.

Accepting. Zen is accepting of anyone, not caring about personal differences so long as there can be an agreement to work together. Easily overcoming the numerous personalities, and even personal issues that many others may have. Zen finds himself able to smoothly engage with any other player without concern about their own ideals and values – so long as they don’t clash with his own.

Honour. Zen holds to a code of honour, one which makes him believe that he must do everything he can to help those in need – even if it means possible peril to himself. He believes so thoroughly in this code, that he will often find himself engaging in otherwise questionable acts, simply because his belief requires it. Stretching to the very ways in which he engages with others, Zen is aware of his honourable traits, and takes pride in their existence.

Idealism. Zen holds himself to the highest standards, believing that he must be an example of what he wishes to see in the world around him. Among these standards are those in which he engages with others, ensuring that they are treated respectfully. Although he is an honourable combatant, Zen knows that sometimes to win is to take upon oneself the actions that others will not – and while his high standards require that he act appropriately, he is willing to take the more devilish ways if it benefits others.

Joyfulness. Zen focuses on the happier aspects of life, refusing to let things bear down upon him. He attempts to engage those around him with this same joyfulness, regardless of their desire to engage in it. This joyfulness if often found at the core of his being, and Zen has no issues letting it loose upon the world – even if it does appear childish and naïve.

Tenacious. Zen shows a habit towards persistence. Once his mind is set on something, he will continue to push for it until success is obtained. Although this has benefited him in the past, he is also aware of the downfall that can occur in such situations.

Spoiler

Gullible. Zen is known to believe the best in everyone, and is easily trusting of anyone who seems to be willing to accept him. Often times, he will place his trust in anyone who immediately warms up to him, not understanding the dangers in this. Although his gullible attitude can often lead him to trouble, Zen believes that trusting in others is important.

Mischievous. Zen enjoys engaging in mischievous jokes and games, often times annoying or upsetting those around him. Although no harm is meant in his actions, he fails to understand why others don’t enjoy his antics. Quick to apologise, Zen doesn’t appear to learn from the mistakes associated with this behaviour, and often repeats his mischievous ways at a later time.

Stubborn. Tenacious in his actions, once Zen has his mind set that something must be completed, he won’t stop his efforts until the goal is obtained – or the option to continue it is no longer possible, regardless of the difficulty or dangers behind it. Aware that this can be considered stubborn nature, Zen believes it’s both a flaw in his character and a virtue towards his behaviours. Focusing on his ability to continue to hound upon something until he succeeds, he refuses to see the negative in this attitude.

Audacious. Zen believes that his skills from the real world will keep him safe in the virtual world. Although he understands that the game itself is a death game, he is unwilling to admit that he may sometimes be overwhelmed by the system, or the things he faces within it. Rarely boasting, he does act in a way that would signify one who is overconfident with their capabilities.

Envious. Zen often finds himself desiring the skills and capabilities of the more elite players in the game. He doesn’t understand why he himself is incapable of leading others in combat, or standing at the very frontlines of their attempt to escape the game. This often comes out in negative interactions with those who are clearly superior to himself – albeit in ways that are often times considered polite, to those who do not know better.
