[F27/PP] Stepping Out | <<Scouting the Labyrinth>>

Recommended Posts

Nari opened her eyes, the alarm she’d set finally dinging with enthusiasm hours after she’d awoken. Her sleep had been restless, constantly filled with numerous different dreams and concepts that she’d prefer not to revisit. She wondered if her tiredness showed on the avatar’s face, or if she’d look her usual self.

Uncurling her feet from beneath her and forcing herself to stand, she made her way to the washroom in order to complete her morning routine. She knew that she only had so much time – the alarm had been set for just a few hours before the meeting time that she herself had posted. The idea of leaving without completing the routine though, was something she didn’t want to even consider.

The cold morning air met her as she made her way out into the open front of her house on floor four. Pulling the hood of her turquoise vest up, the small ears atop bouncing gently before returning to their upright position, Nari glanced around. She’d not seen NIGHT that morning, and had been wondering lately about her hectic schedule. It had seemed like she was being pulled away constantly, something that was making Nari a little distressed.

‘We all have things that keep us busy. I shouldn’t look into it too much. I’m sure she’s feeling the same way…’ A heavy sigh, knowing that she’d have no answer right now, Nari left the house behind. For now, there was something more applicable to focus on - at least, towards their current situation. She glanced upwards as soft snowflakes began to fall, signalling an incoming storm.

The shimmering of the teleporter faded away as Nari opened her eyes. It didn’t matter how often she’d done this, she still hadn’t gotten used to transitioning between floors. The bright light, the sudden shift in her gut…all of it was uncomfortable. Shaking off the feeling, she made her way down to the central area of the main courtyard just below the teleporter pad. She thought back to the notice she’d left, wondering if it would be detailed enough.

To Whom it May Concern;

I’m looking to put together a scouting group for the twenty-seventh floor’s labyrinth. I can handle the role of tanking, but require assistance with searching skill sets. If you’re interested, we’ll meet on the Twenty-Seventh Floor Courtyard in four days time, at seven-thirty hours in the morning. I’ll be waiting in a turquoise hoody, with violet turtleneck – I tend to stand out.

Nari-Lanreth.

Casting her eyes about the courtyard, she found the area relatively empty – a few players passed through, but the majority of NPCs hadn’t made it this far yet. She remembered her time spent here, knowing that it would be an hour or so before the bustle of the city began in earnest. Even in the perpetual darkness, Cardinal had made sure to keep the routines of the NPCs consistent.

“Have to give the system credit for that, it does make sure that consistencies are always maintained…” A soft smile touched her lips, as much as she hated to give any sort of credit to Cardinal she couldn’t deny its effectiveness. “I hope someone shows up today…”

The thin blade itself is coloured lavender, with a heart of royal purple. Attached at the connection between shaft and blade, are twisting tassels of violet and ice blue.
Enhancement: Frostbite [2 Slots] | Effect: Natural critical attack rolls of 9-10 (1 slot) or natural successful attack rolls of 8-10 (2 slots) deal (10 * Tier) unmitigated Frost damage each enemy turn for 2 turns. Póg an Gheimhridh [Tier 4; Heater Shield] A smaller heater shield, this piece contains the typical heater shape, with a bouche edge on the left hand upper corner, and a tear drop tail that curls towards the right on the bottom edge. Coloured a shifting soft violet and ice blue, a small white fox appears on the forefront, the ideas staring outwards and the mouth pulled back in a snarl.

"What do you think? Should we go for it?"

Riker stared back at her, soulful amber eyes bereft of emotion. A non-committal slap of his busy tail against the cabin's wood floor was the only indication he'd actually heard her.

"You're no help at all," Lessa chided, drawing her long legs to her chest, and resting her chin on her knees. She'd been deliberating, largely with herself, ever since seeing the notice. A scouting party. Having been a part of the previous floor's scouting team, it wouldn't be her first rodeo. Besides, she was likely better equipped than she had been back then. Yet even as she thought it, doubt flickered into her lake blue eyes. But so much has changed since then.

As if recognizing Lessa's near-slip into self-pity, the wolf familiar gave a low growl that rumbled like thunder in his chest. When her gaze shifted to meet his, she would have sworn she saw judgment in the glare. The shaggy beast climbed to his feet, then gave a dramatic yawn, pink tongue unfurling between sharp teeth. He padded to the front door, turned, and gave Lessa a look that could only be interpreted in one way - you coming or what?

Just as advertised, the other Player stood out from the crowd. Turquoise hoodie, purple turtleneck. Glancing down at the blue and purple woven into her own attire, Lessa had to appreciate the color scheme. She approached quickly, long strides conveying a confidence she didn't quite feel. Still, she smiled warmly as she stopped before the shorter woman.

"Hey there," she greeted. "Are you Nari-Lanreth?" Please, lord, let me get the pronunciation correct. "I'm Lessa, and this is Riker." The Guardian paused just long enough to motion to the wolf, who had plopped dutifully at her feet. "We're here about your labyrinth search party."

Now for the uncomfortable part. "I'm not exactly a scout build," she confessed slowly, "but I could really use a change of pace, and this seems like a good chance for that. If you can't find a better fit, I'd really like to tag along."

Of all the floors he'd travelled, the twenty-seventh was most likely the one he'd frequented the least.

It wasn't only because of its newness that he hadn't had the opportunity to check things out, but also because of what new floors attracted. Those on the frontlines tended to gather en masse to plan out their attack on the next boss. Information brokers, gatherers, merchants, and explorers all flocked to the wilds in search of fortune or adventure in some way, shape, or form. Consequently, the lower floors had a way of emptying out in comparison. It was quieter, and there were less crowds in the busier areas. That was how Pinball preferred things. A hermit, a vagrant, a guilty conscience; he wandered the floors aimlessly, without any real end in sight.

Or at least that's how things were until recently.

All that time alone had finally caught up to him. His regrets had grown too heavy to bear. He couldn't turn back time. Making things right was impossible. If he wasn't so cowardly, he would have let himself fall off the edge of Aincrad a long time ago. No -- it was precisely because of that cowardice that he returned to the communities of SAO (albeit quietly, and under a growing collection of false identities). Pinball had shifted gears. He'd gone from floor to floor and helped in whatever ways he could. He'd track down supplies for the weak, the scared, the young, the elderly. He'd find lost persons, or more often than not just the people who stopped messaging their friends or relatives they'd left behind on the lower floors. He never accepted reimbursement. He had trouble accepting thanks. If he couldn't fix the past -- if he couldn't reverse the atrocities he'd committed, and the hurt he caused -- then the absolute very least he could possibly do would be just trying to do better. It wasn't enough. It never would be. But it was something.

He'd wrestled with the idea of assisting the frontline effort for a long time. Ultimately, despite his distaste for the majority of people who fought there, and a relatively new aversion to any form of combat, he'd decided to include himself in the next labyrinth search that popped up. Would he regret it? Maybe. Would he back out at the last minute? Nah.

Even if one of the people there, he'd quickly realize, were one of the many he'd wronged in some way or another.

Still, he came up beside them. He was a tall, dark, and gangly sort of young man with a tired look in his eye and a general droop to his stature. He held a sword off in one hand, and wore a black, tattered cloak with a faded insignia over unarmored cloth.  The city was dark. Dark enough it made tiptoeing through settlements just a little easier to do. Pinball listened for a moment. Held his breath. And then he revealed himself. He moved slowly and spoke languidly, but kept a deceptively sharp gaze between them. "I can scout," he said. His eyes flitted from Lessa to Nari. "If you'll have me."

And while the whole floor was draped in darkness and lit in a way that made colors a bit harder to distinguish, a cursor noticeably darker than most spun lazily above his head.

Dustin looks up from his plate with a smile, his hands gripping the silverware on either side of his dish so tight you’d think the durability of the tools was deteriorating. His grin would shift into an open mouth as he picked the right words for this situation. Heimdal sees all, and Odin sacrificed his eye for the wisdom to guide his people. Now, I haven’t made any sacrifice like that, and my eyes aren’t particularly magic, but they’re good enough to see your projection of guilt. You want to blame someone for your crucible, that’s fair. Blame Kayaba. Outside of that, you make your own decisions, and the one you made is the reason you feel so trapped here.” The man’s words would escape with a chilling bite, as his eyes shifted down the bar towards the player who had insulted the very same people who were protecting them. ”You chose to stagnate. You decided just surviving this ordeal was good enough.” His anger poured into words, climbing into action as he stands up and walks over grabbing the player by the coat and pulling him out of his chair.

”You grew complacent. Now you grow only in ignorance, as all of those people who are in the same situation you’re in move forward and you stand still. You refuse to take a step, yet complain of the distance between you.” Dustin would explain, letting go of the other player and walking towards the exit. ”It’s easy to catch up, just take two steps every time we take one. Never stop moving forward.” He would shoot a finger gun over towards the random player and stepping out, pulling up the picture of the notice he had seen and he would sigh to himself. ”Two steps forward… alright.”

As he steps into the courtyard, his eyes search for the outfit described in the notice, before landing on a familiar face. Tilting his head, he’d notice the outfit matches said description and he’d walk towards the trio. The guy in the cloak held Dustin’s caution while he walked up and waved at Nari. ”Hey, You’re Nari, right? I’m here to join the scouting party.” His eyes would move towards the others as he took care to remember their faces. ”What’s up you two? I’m Dustin. And you are?”

As the taller blonde approached, Nari felt herself shift. She’d seen the woman before, quite some time ago – yet she’d never officially met her. Nari wondered if the other remembered her, and the incident, before shaking the thought from her mind. There was no need to focus on that now, nor was there anything to be done if they did remember.

She smiled as Lessa introduced herself, before giving what was likely a horrid rendition of a curtsy. “It’s a pleasure to meet you both! You can just call me Nari, if that’s easier. The handle can be a…bit of a mouthful…Oh, and this is Yuki!”

She rustled the small fox that was curled around her shoulders once again, forcing the white-furred creature to raise its head. The beady black eyes seemed to stare out for a moment before it returned to its sleeping state. She listened as Lessa continued speaking, explaining her lack of scouting build, but the desire to come along regardless.

“I’m not really a scout either…actually I’m not really well equipped for anything outside of combat – I kind of focused on that a little too much, I think…but I’d be happy to have you along regardless! Even if no one else comes – which I hope they will…well, it may just take us a bit longer, but I think we can eventually find it. Besides, even if we don’t, at least we can let people know where not to search?”

She wasn’t entirely confident in her concept, but it was the best she had to offer. She also figured it was a fair idea, for someone who’d never done any of these scouting parties before. ‘And yet, here I am organising one. Maybe this isn’t the best idea…too late now though…’

Her thought was interrupted as another figure approached, a dark haired male who towered over Nari, forcing her to stretch her head back a bit to see his face. His greeting was simple, to the point. His expression bespoke of someone whom was reserved, kept to themselves – something Nari could understand, to a degree. What caught her attention, however, was the orange marker floating above his head, twirling carelessly – yet standing out as a warning, regardless.

Her eyes shot to Lessa, before she nodded her head slowly. She didn’t want to offend the man, but her guard was definitely raised. “I’m not against it myself, but I’m not the only one here – and let’s be honest, many people would shy away from that orange floating above you. I won’t ask you your past, because that’s between you and the gods above….but do we need to worry about you?”

Her question was blank, and to the point. It was also out of her mouth before she could consider the implications of the words – something that happened far too often. She was just considering covering her words with something apologetic, when another approached – one that she remembered distantly from an experience long ago.

“Hello Dustin.” Her eyes narrowed slightly, before she forced a smile back on her face. “It’s nice to see you again. From arms reach.”

Some of the unease left Lessa as Nari executed a shaky curtsey. She had a wild and sudden urge to give one of her own, but opted against it, fearing she may give the impression of mocking the other woman. Still, she didn't stop the small smile that bloomed across her chapped lips.

"Nari, then," the blonde confirmed, inclining her head slightly in acceptance. "The whole name is beautiful, but, yeah." A soft, breathy laugh escaped her. "A mouthful." Lessa shifted her attention to the familiar, wound around Nari's neck like... well, a fancy woman's expensive fox pelt. What a morbid thought, she scolded herself. "Pleasure to meet you too, Yuki." Riker, to his credit, gave a soft yip that could be interpreted as a greeting.

Things seemed to be going well, all things considered. Nari was quite friendly, and didn't seem too put off by Lessa's lack of scouting. Maybe this will actually end up being a positive experience.

Then he stepped up beside her.

Like a river beneath winter's snap chill, the blood froze in Lessa's veins. She suddenly became incredibly aware of each breath she drew, and how it seemed to resonate Darth Vader-like in her ears. In an instant, she was swamped with both the need to look at him, and the stark refusal to do so. The result was a slanted, side-eye glance that lasted only the briefest second. The look chased all doubt from her mind.

The last time she had seen Pinball, he'd lay tossed across the snow, pinned beneath the point of Bahr's blade.

"How many more before someone stops him, do you think?" Bahr's snarled words returned to her. "How much goodwill can someone like that be afforded?"

"You almost had it."

Pinball, gazing down at her, stowing his sword on his hip as the freshly-killed gorilla showered him in pixels. The gorilla that would have killed her, had he not intervened.

"Do we need to worry about you?" Nari had asked. Depends on who you ask.

Without knowing exactly what to say, Lessa decided to remain silent. Nothing had gone the way she had expected over the past six months, so why did Pinball's sudden arrival surprise her at all? I don't understand it, she rationalized, but I haven't understood much of anything in a very long time.

Distantly, Lessa became aware of Dustin's presence. She gave him a small nod of acknowledgement. "I'm Lessa," came her short answer.

He'd taken his time glancing the two over, and thought he had a pretty fair grasp on the situation. As such, he was aware of a couple things.

Nari was unfamiliar to him. But that wasn't entirely surprising. While it felt like the rate at which new players arrived at the frontlines had slowed when compared to when he'd started, there would always be a somewhat steady stream of new faces arrived ready to fight. There had to be. Without them... well, things would get pretty bleak, pretty fast. Her skepticism was warranted, he'd suppose, if she'd never heard of him -- or even more so if she had -- and Pinball, for the most part, kept his eyes on her. "Not unless there's reason to worry about you," he replied evenly. He'd match her gaze until she pulled away. The message was clear enough: he didn't have interest in causing trouble, unless they felt like causing trouble for him.

Throughout this, he was aware of Lessa and her reaction. Or lack thereof. It was the sort of thing you felt in the air around them, that sudden hush in a person that spoke louder than any one or two words. The stiffness in their posture. The intentional aversion of their gaze that betrayed their awareness. She'd been talking moments before he'd stepped up. Now her willingness to speak had seemingly left her. And although his heart certainly wasn't the hardest it had never been, Pinball knew better than to let his guard down. He kept the wall up, and people at an arm's length. There were many reasons for this. But despite that, he couldn't help but feel the sharp twinge of sadness that pierced his heart in those few moments.

Of course this, including Pinball's icy demeanor, was all completely obliterated upon his arrival.

"You're kidding me," he mumbled, reflexively yanking his hood further down his face.

He had history with Dustin too. They went way back. Close friends, bitter enemies, unsuspecting allies; there wasn't any predicting how any one interaction between the two would go. This chaotic ebb and flow of their relationship exhausted him. Annoyed him? He wasn't sure exactly what it was, really, but there was a whole lot of something vaguely unpleasant he felt whenever Dustin showed up. Maybe. With a newer, more exasperated expression on his face, Pinball glanced in Dustin's direction, but didn't respond. The longer it took for him to recognize him, the better. Instead, he turned back to Nari, speaking quickly even as he stifled a sigh. "I'm a scout. I don't do combat, though. I can lead the way, but the fighting will mostly be up to you guys." He paused, then quietly added, "I'll try to help where I can."

Pinball turned away from the group, and started to walk. He swiped open a menu with his finger. Tapped through its interface. He thought of a spot that they could quickly stop by, and then considered the bounty of tooth-rotting, sugary feasts in his inventory. If the dangers of a scouting party had gotten any dangerous with the update, as most other things had, it'd do them well to leave prepared.

"Let's get outside city bounds. I've got buffs for the party."

Dustin wasn't quite sure what was going on, but he was more than happy to be involved. This was his first actual step into the frontlines, something he had dreamed of since first joining the game. ”Well ain’t we just a chipper bunch?” Dustin’s hands would slide into his pockets. They felt naked now that they weren’t always wrapped, but he didn’t need the strength of Thor anymore, as he had found his own. The flimsy silver blade hanging on his him would be fine for now, his skills more than made up for the lack of damage that blade carried by itself. Other than that, with his thick blue sweatshirt and his cargo pants and combat boots on, you would assume he hadn’t realized he was trapped in a game yet.

Turning to Lessa, Dustin would tilt his head, then shift his focus to the man in the cloak. It was a vaguely familiar cloak, and the voice was just the same. It bugged the kid to his core that he had apparently forgotten someone. ”I don’t believe I caught your name.” Dustin would say to his best friend/mortal enemy as the kid turned his back on the group. Their past was a very complicated one, but one Dustin was willing to leave alone so long as no one mentioned any specifics. The offer of snacks however, was one Dustin would immediately accept, scarfing done his share of almost every plate.

When he was done eating his food, the kid in blue would pull out a glass of pristine milk he always kept on him and chug it as he walked. The tension was palpable, the silence was deafening, and the anticipation was suffocating. Dustin could feel the happiness rising through his body as if it were made of helium. ”Every good group has a name. The dukes of hazard, the knights of the round table, the Avengers. We need one for this one. Even if it’s a one time deal, the song of our battle won’t echo through Valhalla if they have to say all of our names.” Dustin would dart through the group popping up by Pinball and nudging him in the arm. ”Come on… you get to pick the name. I’d let Nari but I’m not exactly her favorite. Her suggestion would be mean, like the three heroes and the dumbass.” His eyes would shift back towards the pair of women and stick his tongue out at Nari tauntingly.

There was tension there, of that, she was sure. What had caused it, was beyond her – but the newcomer, Pinball, had assured her there’d be no trouble. She knew entirely trusting that was beyond belief. That orange marker bespoke of concern all by itself – but it didn’t necessarily mean that they were in danger. Her eyes darting as the other three spoke among one another, she hesitantly took an offering of the feasts, almost regally taking her time to complete her portion, before offering her thanks to the questionable player.

“It’s very kind of you to share, especially knowing how difficult these can be to come across lately. You mentioned that you’re focus is scouting – I’m actually happy to have that along, if the rest of us are more combat focused. It’ll be good to have your eyes and ears watching out for us, and keeping us on track.” She attempted a smile at the hooded figure, unsure if he would even see it as she walked alongside the man – having to take two steps to his every one, just to keep up. Not for the first time, she cursed her tiny legs and the limitations they naturally brought, especially in a game like this.

She turned her attention to Dustin as he attempted to make a joke. It wasn’t horrible, but as he stuck his tongue out, she couldn’t help but roll her eyes and look away. “Cuireann Morríghan inchinn ar fáil duit... nó mise roinnt foighne. Why not something simple, like the Midnight Outriders, or Abyssal Vanguard. If you’re determined to have something.”

She shifted her gaze to Lessa, who’d grown silent and tense since Pinball’s arrival. Nari wasn’t sure what to make of it, but something was definitely there to be concerned about. Drifting over to the other woman, she leaned in closer as they walked, whispering low in an attempt to stop the others from hearing.

“Anything occurs, let me know. Not much can get through my defences. Okay?” She hoped that even if the others heard, it would be vague enough not to attribute to anything of concern, but she wasn’t sure how subtle she’d been. Either way, she wanted to make sure they were all as comfortable as they could be – otherwise what they were about to engage in could be far more dangerous. A common saying of her sensei arose to her mind as she glanced about the group, trying to gauge their standing among one another. One cannot walk into the pyres of conflict, if the kindles of home still burn beneath.

Lessa shrugged one shoulder, half of her attention still occupied by Pinball's presence. "I was never much of a team name type," she confessed. "I'm happy to go with whatever the group decides."

Despite all of her hesitations, the woman couldn't find any reason to reject Pinball's offered buffs. Not only was it a kind gesture, the additional stats would come in handy as she ventured into the mysterious and unpredictable labyrinth. So she sucked in a slow breath, sending her bangs fluttering on an equally slow exhale, and accepted the offered feasts. "Thank you," she muttered to Pinball. "These were a good idea, and it was nice of you to bring them." And she left it at that, consuming the food in silence. It was good, all things considered. Did Pinball make these? she found herself wondering. Is he a cook? There were certainly many things that Lessa did not know about the young man, and distantly, she wondered if she would ever be given the opportunity to learn them.

As she studied her new, improved stats, Lessa felt another Player move up beside her. A quick glance revealed that it was Nari, her new acquaintance, and the fearless party leader. The comment she mumbled seemed vague and out of place, until the blonde finally caught her drift. Pinball. Was this simply standard concern toward an orange player, or had Lessa's unease been that evident?

"I guess..." she began slowly, then realized she didn't actually know how she intended to end that sentence. She loosed a small sigh, then tried again. "I guess I don't think there will be any issues." Having dropped behind the two men, Lessa felt comfortable giving a small nod toward Pin's back. "We've got something of a history, but... well, he's never wronged me. So I'll give him a chance."

What would Bahr say, if he knew she had just said as much about his sworn enemy?

Doesn't matter, came her answer. He's not here right now.

Pinball consumed the items at a meticulous pace. Not too slowly, but not too quickly either. He felt so strongly the need to appear as normal as possible in this group that he probably succeeded in appearing as anything but. He was aware of this, and he felt very uncomfortable in his own skin. The longer he remained sitting there, silently chewing and drinking, the more his face burned up because of that encroaching embarrassment. Finally, he threw caution to the wind and sped up, intent on finishing as quickly as possible.

He was already finished and wiping the corner of his lips when Lessa spoke to him, accepting the buffs.

Surprised she was even talking to him, he at first said nothing. Then he shrugged, turning away. "It was nothing," he replied, in that same artificially offhanded tone. It was nothing. Pinball straightened himself proper and kept his eyes ahead as they walked, clearing his mind. They were almost out of the city now, and it was about time Pinball did the job he'd signed up for. He felt a brief stab of panic through his heart, and some voice in the back of his mind doubted if he'd actually be able to do what he'd set out to. As it so happened, he'd never actually searched for a labyrinth before -- his skills were usually reserved for the targets of his worried clients.

But he pushed through it easily. At the end of the day it didn't matter what he thought himself capable of. Cardinal did it for him.

His eyes glinted with light, shining green and yellow as the mesh of the world was revealed to him. He considered the paths laid out before them and picked the one he thought was best, noticing a treasure chest not at all far off the beaten path in the direction they were heading. Pinball paused for a moment, hesitating, and then shook his head, pressing forward. He wouldn't look back to check if anyone else had noticed it or not.

"We've only just started," he said, explaining himself unprompted. "Don't need to take a detour already. This way."

There would be plenty more opportunities for loot on their journey there, he was sure.

  • 2 weeks later...

Dustin would turn to Nari and tilt his head. She appeared to speak in some sort of foreign language he had never heard before, and Dustin would shrug. ”Don’t know what you said, but I’m gonna assume it was a compliment.” He would remark, continuing on his first journey in a long time. He had very little in the way of gear, but it was enough to keep him alive, and that’s all that mattered. Still though it’d be nice to know his whole party, and that included the mysterious cloaked figure.

”Hey mystery kid, what’s your name? I don’t see any point in hiding it from someone who could end up being your best friend.” Dustin’s mind ran through the possibilities for a moment. Could it be someone from Greil’s group? Probably not, Dustin had all but wiped out the orange players in that den. ”Actually… on second thought…” Dustin would walk over to the kid, noticing the treasure chest he had spotted and completely changing the focus of his questioning.

Walking to the small wooden box, Dustin would grab the top and bottom, pulling in opposite directions completely ignoring the lock as he grunted and it flew open revealing two weapons, and a single bottle of mysterious liquid. Tossing the bottle and one of the weapons to Pinball, Dustin would smile. ”You won’t get your riches if you don’t claim your loot.”

Finally looking Pinball straight on, Dustin had a sinking feeling in his chest. He had seen the shrouded face before, and it was never in a good situation. ”Pinball? No way dude… what are you doing scouting?” He would say, Walking up to the man and placing his hand on his shoulder, serious face and everything.

”Sorry for trying to kill you all those years.” His serious face would shift into a bright smile, his other hand giving the kid a thumbs up. ”Bygones, amirite?”

Sorry for trying to kill you all those years. Her eyes flicked towards Dustin, her face void of any emotion. It was not what she expected to hear, especially from a player ringed in green. A sudden tingling up her spine, as her eyes flicked between each member of the group, tension causing her movements to become stiff. So this, is the glorious frontlines…

“So, you two know each other as well? I’m starting to feel like the odd one out! Although, I guess that’s to be expected…” Her voice carried a tone of attempted cheerfulness, likely ringing hollow due to her unease. She’d felt herself naturally slide towards Lessa, her shield and spear shifting in her grip – the polearm itself rolling forward into a relax and ready grip in her left hand.

Forcing herself to look away from the group – they had a job to do here, and becoming entwined in concern and theories wouldn’t help – she tried looking for any sign of where they should be heading. She realised, that this was far outside her forte, beyond the defensive build that she’d always focused on. “Perhaps I should consider the skills outside of just conflict…”

She sighed in response to the spoken words, deciding that was a problem for another time. Deciding she could, at least, learn more about those around her, she spoke up again. “Seeing as you’re all…friends…have any of you attending a labyrinth search before? Or a boss battle? Any recommendations on what to expect? Aside from near-death experiences, and a ton of walking?”

She added a smile at the end, trying to make light of the situation, even though she felt anything but happy at the current moment. She was truly wondering what she had walked in to, what she had become involved with, and if she’d made some sort of mistake along the way. You wanted to be here, and now you are. No reservations, no hesitations. Focus. Fight. Freedom.
