Background:

Kana grew up in a small town in the mountainous parts of the Niigata Prefecture, even though, today he isn't sure if one could even call it a town. His Childhood was relatively care free till the moment he was big enough to help in the fields and his free time after school changed from playing with friends to growing rice with his family. Soon he had become his classes misfit who had close to no friends. When he got to high school, he was a loner with little interest in other pupil and no interest in activities at all, as he knew he wouldn't be able to take part of it anyways.
When his Father died, he left school for good and took over the families rice farm, working long hours with his mother and aunt, just to make a living. A combination of multiple bad summers and a falling rice prices lead the family business to go bankrupt. With nothing left, his mother returned to her parents, taking care of them and working in a shop in town, but Kana had nothing going for him.

With the little money he still had, he left for Niigata City, renting a small apartment and getting his school done while working night shifts at a factory. His life was hard, the days long and the nights even longer, but he finally did it. He passed his last exam, graduated and started looking for a better paying job. Soon enough he started working at a bigger company, delivering and selling technological innovative machinery to those tat could spare the money. It wasn't what he wanted to do, when he was younger, but it got him a livable wage without working tripple the time anyone else did, and every once in a while he got some nice gear for himself. This got him into gaming, and before long, the news about a game that would let you leave the world behind and dive into some virtual reality spread and his company was managing the delivery over in Niigata and would have a lucky five workers get the game and gear, as they raffled those five copies of the game.

Kana was one of the lucky winners, or maybe they weren't lucky but rather unlucky, as he should learn not to much later. But the day he won the game and was able to dive into Aincrad, leaving the world behind him, he felt as if he was blessed. Once the death game was revealed he was sure, he would be one of those that wouldn't survive the game, as nothing in his life had gone the way he intended it to go, so he stayed in the Town of Beginnings, spending his time with those poor others, that were trapped in this game with him. 

While it wasn't a pleasant experience being caught in a game, that could kill you, the time he spent in the Town of Beginnings was not all bad. After the first surge of players that had either killed themselves, or left for adventuring and clearing the game, only  those were left, that weren't brave enough to leave, and he was one of them. 
While others grouped together to help each other he kept to himself, and when he finally realized, that this would be his life from there on forwards, he quickly searched the Town for an Inn he could stay in, as he knew there wouldn't be enough room for everyone finding a good sleeping place.

The Smashed Apple was located at the edge of town, leaning against the huge wall, that surrounded the entire city, and wasn't the best Inn you could find in the city, but Kana had been able to rent the attic that was more like a small flat, having both a living room with a small open kitchen, as well as a bedroom. Over the time, it had become his new home, and he was happy whenever he returned there from his trips in to the town center and could chill away from all those other people. While he needed the silence he had in his room, he also learned to like meeting with the other players who had rooms in the inn as well. There were two he was quite fond of by now. One was a really short girl, that had arrived shortly after him, and that he met in irregular intervals, her name was @akiko. The second one was a guy around his age, probably one or two years younger, who had managed to do some adventuring in the early days, but since most of the adventuring players had left, he was stranded without good gear and without group, so he more or less relaxed in his room most of the time.

Virtues

1. Workforce.
   Having worked hard from his early childhood until he was caught in the death game of sword art online, Kana is ready to give it his all. If there is something to be done, that seems at least a little likely, he will go through the effort to do it. He is determined to do something, even though he doesn't really know what this something is at the moment.
2. The Outsider. 
   His life without friends has made him a loner that doesn't really need company. Many might see this as a flaw, but not Kana. He knows that it'll allow him to thrive even if there is no one to support him, and that is exactly what one needs in this game of death. A secondary positive effect he sees in being an outsider is the chance to meet a variety of different people without judging them on the spot, as that is what happened to him, and he wouldn't want someone else to go through that.
3. The man of the family.
   He had to be the man of the family from his early teens on, so he knows how it is to give it his all for others. He will protect those close to him, and make sure they have everything they need, even if he has to hunger for it. Within SAO this will make him a protector, ready to take a hit, if he can save those who can't defend themselves. 

Flaws

1. Spacey
   Working long hours in the rice fields and later in a factory, doing nothing more than pressing a button and releasing some parts from a machine made him create some automatisms in his work that lead to Kana having much time to think about everything. He was mostly daydreaming about all the great adventure one could think of, especially as he had still been a child. Later in his life the daydreams became less fantastic, but still he is prone to loosing his concentration when doing something repeatedly. This might become quite dangerous if Kana gets into this state while outside of a Save Zone. How will he handle this?
2. The Outsider
   While Kana sees it as a virtue that will help him connect to other strangers, it also is one of his flaws. As he hasn't had that much social contact while in school and his later life, he might have problems talking to others or knowing what they want from him. He will need to learn to understand and interpret others if he wants to become a working member of a team, and not just someone who trodds around with them, without really belonging.
3. Stubborn
   When you have gotten through all these hard times by following your own advice, why would you do what someone else says? Believing he knows the best way to do something Kana is quite stubborn and it takes some heavy arguing before he might realize that the other way might be better and to give up on what he decided was the right way to go. This might lead to some problems when he has to work with a group, but you can be sure he will stay to do what you said, if you are able to get trough to him.
