Calyx 0 Posted July 25, 2014 Author #21 Share Posted July 25, 2014 "Aw, come on, buddy. I'm not gonna leave ya up here to die. Besides, I think this beast tamer thing means we're stuck together. Or at least psychically linked forever." The dragon resumed its offended blinking, "I am perfectly capable of fending for myself. Dragons are the most fearsome of creatures; we need the aid of no man." Calyx raised a disbelieving eyebrow but remained silent. "..... Although, if you would like to ferry my down the mountain, I have business down there, and I'm not sure how far my wings will carry me anymore..."
Calyx 0 Posted July 26, 2014 Author #22 Share Posted July 26, 2014 "Uh-huh...", Calyx said with a smile. "Climb on up."He patted his left shoulder with his free hand in an invitation for the dragon to take up a perch. The creature glared again momentarily, and then crawled over to Calyx and climbed up his leg and onto his shoulder. As Calyx started back down the mountain, he reached over the dragon to resheath Kaeseras on his back. When he did, the dragon immediately climbed up onto the pommel and wrapped its tail around the hilt. "Ah. This is a much better vantage point.", the dragon said, satisfied. Calyx silently smiled at the dragon's constant vigilance in retaining his inborn dignity, and carried on back toward Urbus.
Calyx 0 Posted July 27, 2014 Author #23 Share Posted July 27, 2014 As they silently made their way down the mountain, a question about old dragon mythology occurred to Calyx, and he decided to ask his new friend. "Hey, uh. Uh... Hang on, what do I call you?" Calyx hadn't realized until now that they had yet to be properly introduced. "Well you could try calling me by my name.", the dragon snarked. "Well I don't know your name.", Calyx retorted. "Well you never bothered to ask, now did you?" Calyx looked up at the dragon perched on the hilt of his sword, only to find the dragon already looking down at him. "My name's Calyx.", he thought to the creature above him. "And I am called Lockheed."
Calyx 0 Posted July 27, 2014 Author #24 Share Posted July 27, 2014 Calyx couldn't contain a snort. "Does something amuse you?...", Lockheed asked skeptically. "No, no. That's a very... uncanny name." Calyx smiled to himself at the reference to the old X-men comics that the dragon's name was clearly an homage to. These designers knew their stuff. "Hm.", the dragon thought, with mild approval. Forgetting all about his question, Calyx continued down the mountain, contented for once, being around someone other than himself.
Calyx 0 Posted July 27, 2014 Author #25 Share Posted July 27, 2014 Having descended the mountain, Calyx and Lockheed walked the patchy dirt trail back to the city that had been worn into the countryside by the heavy boots of hundreds of knights. There were some sparse clumpings of trees around; and Calyx, for one, was glad for the shade. It had been a long hike up the mountain and back, and he was looking forward to being able to rest at a local inn for a while. He wasn't sure how the townspeople would react to a miniaturized version of the creature they had so long feared being carried into town; but he imagined the game wouldn't give him a Familiar companion that he was bound to and then immediately penalize him for it. Despite his placid intentions, however, a group of three men suddenly stepped out from the trees and surrounded Calyx and his new dragon friend.
Calyx 0 Posted July 27, 2014 Author #26 Share Posted July 27, 2014 Calyx raised an eyebrow at the three NPC men who were dressed very obviously as bandits. " 'and over all your mah'ney!", the man in front of Calyx shouted. Calyx sighed, "Guys, you really don't want to do this. I'm tired, i'm hungry, and i'm stronger than you. I've got a freakin' dragon on my back, for Kayaba's sake. I'm willing to give you a pass because it's been a long day, but please; i'm asking you: just let it go. It really is in your best interest." Calyx 0 Posted July 27, 2014 Author #27 Share Posted July 27, 2014 The bandit in front seemed mildly confused now, bust mostly just didn't appear to register Calyx's response. "I 'fink you're in cahoots what wif' dat dragon you got there. We don't like dragons 'round these parts... They take all our gold. Say, maybe you're the one what's got all our treasure... I think we should cut him open an' see, boys." The three bandits all began to close in on Calyx in unison, and Calyx sighed as he drew Kaeseras. When he reached for the handle, Lockheed glided off into a tree branch up above, safely out of the way. "Let's see how well you humans do in combat... Well, against each other, anyway." Calyx 0 Posted July 27, 2014 Author #28 Share Posted July 27, 2014 [Calyx's turn] Calyx gripped Kaeseras tightly and charged at the man in front of him. He didn't know nearly as many two handed skills as he did one handed, and nothing he knew would allow him to close ground before he struck. So he decided to open with a basic baseball-swing attack, and hope the massive sword could hit a man without the help of the System. Calyx 0 Posted July 27, 2014 Author #29 Share Posted July 27, 2014 [Left bandit's turn] Kaeseras looked heavier than it felt, and consequently Calyx swung it faster than he had intended to and missed the man in front of him completely. The man behind Calyx and to his left took the opportunity to strike at Calyx from behind, landing a small dagger in his back. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #30 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Front bandit's turn] The bandit in front of Calyx managed to dodge his attack, but had to lean so far back to do so that he fell over backwards. He took a moment to get up and scampered away a few feet, hopefully out of range of the next sword swing. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #31 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Right bandit's turn] The bandit behind Calyx and to his right also decided to take a stab at him, literally; and dug another small knife into his side, just below his rib cage. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #32 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Calyx's turn] "Okay, that's quite enough of that." Calyx said to none of the bandits in particular. "Let's do that again; and do try to go down easier this time..." He was starting to worry he'd look bad in front of Lockheed, and stepped up his game as he took another swing at the man in front of him. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #33 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Left bandit's turn] After Calyx was stabbed in his left side, he had managed to bring Kaeseras up and around in retaliation fast enough to thwart the second stabbing attempt of the third man behind him. Empowered by his last successful attempt, the man on the left went in for the kill again, this time aiming his knife at Calyx's back. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #34 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Front bandit's turn] Calyx's blade had buried itself deep in the bandit leader's arm; and as these were NPC's and not players, they were programmed to simulate the feeling of pain. The man screamed and clutched his arm, recoiling from the attack. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #36 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Calyx's turn] His sword having tasted blood, Calyx felt himself sinking into the groove of battle. Unconcerned by the surrounding men trying to kill him, he thought it might be a good time to try one of the two-handed skills he had read about. He raised Kaeseras above his head and waited the half a moment for the massive sword to begin glowing blue. When he felt the hum in his hands, he brought the sword down on the terrified man in front of him, who was still clutching his arm from the last attack. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #37 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Left/right bandit's turns] Calyx's mighty swing hit the ground with a concrete *THUD*, mere inches away from the bandit leader. The two men behind Calyx shielded their eyes from the wave of dust that came rolling out from the epicenter of the blast, frozen momentarily in fear of the great blue blade. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #38 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Front bandit's turn] When the heavy sword hit the ground, the bandit leader saw his opening. He quickly slid forward and grabbed the front of Calyx's armor, reaching around to stab him in the side of the neck. Calyx instinctively recoiled, knowing he shouldn't have left himself so open. Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #39 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Calyx's turn] Calyx knew this did not look good. He hadn't lost the fight yet, but he knew Lockheed was judging him. He could feel the dragon's beady little eyes trained on him, unimpressed with his performance. Calyx stood to face his attackers, and driven by the will to change the dragon's mind, brought his sword across at the bandit leader's head. Battle dice 7(+1) Calyx attacks for 4, blocks for 3 Calyx health: 13/15 Left bandit health: 5/5 Front bandit health: 0/5 (DEFEATED) Right bandit health: 5/5 Loot roll: 19 (Uncommon item) Azure dragon armor: -1 damage
Calyx 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Author #40 Share Posted July 28, 2014 [Left and right bandit's turns] It almost happened in slow motion; Calyx swung Kaeseras into the side of the man's head in a perfect arc, making solid contact in the dead center of his ear. The man's head gave a small measure of resistance before it, and his entire body, exploded in a brilliant display of glittering shards. The two other bandits would have been awestruck and unable to function had their daggers not already been en route to Calyx's body. Each blade claimed one of Calyx's shoulderblades as the pieces of the fallen bandit leader settled into the dust.
