History

Being the younger brother of the his parent’s ‘ever-so-perfect’ Natalie Mikazuki (<>) took an enormous toll on Shinn’s emotional development and childhood. While Natalie was praised for her brilliance and outstanding academic success, Shinn found himself ignored for performing below the standard his sister had set. His GPA remained on the upper-end, but nothing he did seemed to compare. Shinn grew to hate her; he despised her, as well as the rest of his family for not noticing his accomplishments. He was still intelligent enough to outsmart most of his classmates, but it was never good enough. The boy never fully revealed his disdain towards Natalie, but he eventually halted all communication that wasn’t essential with his family. To him, they were but acquaintances.

As a result of his strained familial relationship, Shinn searched for affection in the friends surrounding him. Shinn was relatively popular among his classmates, and as such, he had many people he’d consider friends, but his closest friend was a blonde-haired girl called Ayaka. She was a lovely girl, and her parents, unlike his own, accepted him, and welcomed him into their home. It wasn’t long before Shinn began to develop romantic feelings towards Ayaka. These feelings were requited. At the age of thirteen, he found almost every second spent outside of school with her. Ayaka gave him the appreciation he had been seeking for years, and he did everything he could to reciprocate it. To Shinn, Ayaka meant the world.

Their relationship didn’t last. A year or so later, Ayaka told Shinn that she had lost interest in him. She told him he was just too clingy for her, and that she had only remained with him for so long because she liked the thought of being in love, but simply couldn’t see him as more than a friend after so much time. Heartbroken, Shinn cut off contact with her, denying Ayaka’s request to remain friends. Most of his other friendships had been lost, due to him devoting every second outside of school to her, resulting in him being alone once more. Like his sister before him, this led to an obsession with the Internet, where he didn’t have to risk his emotions for the sake of friendship. He found himself cycling through many aliases, but eventually settled on one: <>.

It was six months before S.A.O. was released when Shinn began to explore the realm of online gaming. He immediately found himself addicted to the attention he received when he turned out to be relatively skilled at a game. He heard about S.A.O. while playing a normal MMORPG, and decided that he’d buy the equipment himself. After all, he had a job, and his parents didn’t get on his case like they did his sister. He could do whatever he wanted, with few consequences, and as such, he found himself as one of the ten-thousand players stuck within the virtual grasp of the VRMMORPG: Sword Art Online.

Unlike the many who were driven mad with fear, Shinn swiftly found himself attached to the world. He could grow powerful within the world, and with power, he could grow famous. The thought of people appreciating his strength within the world was enough to destroy every ounce of fear within the boy. It wasn’t a matter of life and death to him. It was a matter of becoming known or not.

There was a side-objective to his time in Sword Art Online. Shinn might have avoided his family, but he knew that Natalie was also going to be within the virtual boundaries of the game. He didn’t know as to whether or not he’d kill her, but if he found out who she was, he would do whatever he could to show that he was superior to her. He would show her insignificance if it was the last thing he’d do; Natalie was nothing compared to him, or so he thought.

Virtues

Unrelenting: Hawke, driven by his desire for fame, is unyielding to fear of death. He’d gladly die before appearing to be a coward. Due to this, he holds the strength, as well as the recklessness to continue fighting where others may retreat. He’ll be the last one to flee from a conflict, and even then, the odds are he won’t. Cowardice is not an option, whether or not the odds are against him. It’s a rule he lives by in the death game he inhabits.

Loyalty: Though his main drive may be self-centered, Hawke isn’t without honor. The closer one is to Hawke, the more he’d do for them. Combined with his unrelenting personality, if Hawke’s loyalty for one is strong enough, he’d gladly give their life saving them. A noble sacrifice, in his eyes, would bring him the fame and glory he seeks, yet it remains his last resort.

Just: As someone who craves to be famous, not infamous, Hawke routinely follows the stereotypes of being ‘one of the good guys.’ He masks his longing for attention with a selflessness that brings him to make sure no crime goes unpunished. If Hawke witnesses a crime, he will, under nearly any circumstance, pursue the wrongdoer and see to it that they are punished accordingly.

Flaws

Cynical: Having felt betrayed by most of the people close to him throughout his life, Hawke believes that most people care only for themselves. However, Hawke isn’t nearly dumb enough to believe himself innocent of this very belief. He understands that he is guilty of the same cynicism; it’s because of his selfishness that he believes the majority of people to be the same as him, and he can’t stand those who are truly selfless.

Envious: Because he wants to be well-known, Hawke hates it when others attract the attention of those whose attention he craves. He also despises watching others excel in areas he doesn't, and wishes to have the strength of those above him. However, his loyalty, and his sense of justice both stop his aggression, and he will not attack based on jealousy alone.

Dependent: Hawke feeds off the attention of others. While he doesn't need to feel powerful or famous to live on, he will not be happy without attention. His mood is entirely dependent on how others view him, and as such, he is very volatile. The smallest of words might send him into a fit.
