History

Mizuki Setsuko was born in the massive city of Tokyo to a young Japanese couple whom, at the time, thought they were truly in love. Early on in her childhood, however, her parents agreed to a divorce when they realized they rushed their relationship. After a long court ruling, her genius father was given custody of the young little girl, as he would be better suited to supporting her. This gave Mizuki the upbringing she needed to grow to her full potential. Never struggling for money allowed her to attend school and excel, which she always did. Not once did her grades drop below exemplary; she was expected to be among the top students of her class every year.

As Mizuki entered middle school, her father began to share his love for technology with her. With the help of her father, Mizuki built her first computer out of the top-tier parts. Not long after, she found herself entranced by the infinite space known as the Internet, going as far as to join her junior high’s computer club. Even so, she managed to balance her school, social, and online lives by what was most important, leaving her studies with most of her allotted time. Weekends, however, were usually split half-and-half between social and online activities. Though, in actuality, she would have preferred to spend most of it online. Her father pushed her to remain socially active, and she respected these wishes.

Mizuki’s life began to spiral when her father lost his job after a physical confrontation with his boss. He lived his life paycheck to paycheck, spending most of what wasn’t used for essentials on technology he didn’t need. Upon his firing, he spent the rest of his money on alcohol, and became violently drunk. One day, when Mizuki returned home from school, he started shouting at her. Her father stupidly screamed at her, claiming his life would have been better off without her. Screaming back with tears in her eyes, Mizuki refuted his claim and told him he was a failure, and that she would have preferred to remain with her mother. In a fit of rage, Mizuki’s father struck at her head, knocking her unconscious. When she woke up, she found his body hanging from a rope; he had killed himself out of guilt.

Depression followed her father’s suicide. With her father gone, custody was shifted to her mother, who was a complete stranger to the heartbroken teenager. Her mother’s attempts to comfort Mizuki were in vain, as the girl had taken her father’s words to heart: she was a burden to her father, and as such, she was a burden to her mother. Studying was still what she spent most of her time doing, but she had kept her computer. Her social life crumbled, and she found herself spending more and more time online, preferring the anonymity she maintained. Nobody would know who she was online; nobody would feel sorry for her online.

Eventually, Mizuki was drawn towards the world of online gaming. MMORPGs in particular caught her attention. A world where you looked like someone else to everyone else. It was a fresh start, and she delved right into them. One game leading to another, she found herself hearing about the first VRMMORPG, Sword Art Online. The thought of living in an entirely different world that even felt real enticed her. She convinced her mother to purchase all of the necessary equipment, using her depression as leverage. As soon as she was finished downloading the game, she uttered the words, â€Link start!†and found herself waiting for the final unveiling of the game.

What she found wasn’t what she had expected. Yes, Mizuki had found a new beginning under her alias of «Setsuko». That was one of the few good aspects of the game. However, when Akihiko Kayaba’s mirror shifted her from what she wanted to be to who she truly was, she found her fresh start corrupted. There was no difference between the game and the real world. Everyone would see her how she truly was, crushing the sole reason she had purchased the game to begin with: to escape from her reality. Suicide has crossed her mind, but she couldn’t do it, even if she wouldn’t feel pain. She’s found herself working with the other players to escape, to show that she isn’t a burden.

Virtues

Composed: Calm and bold, Setsuko seldom allows herself to succumb to her negative emotions in the midst of battle. Regardless of how dire a combat situation may look, she’ll never so much as flinch. Hesitation is the seed of defeat, and because of that, she rarely allows herself to take action half-heartedly. What she does, she does with all she has. With that said, Setsuko isn’t arrogant. She knows her limits, and won’t allow herself to be killed over an idiotic overestimation of her strength. Instead, she’ll flee without a second thought, and survive to fight another day under more desirable circumstances. This composure follows Setsuko out of a fight as well, allowing her to always appear confident to others.

Valliant: Although it may not be visible on her face, Setsuko is frightened by the fear of dying in the virtual world. However, she buries the thought well, and masks it instead of with a look of courage and determination. Because of this, it isn’t hard to mistake her for being braver than she truly is. When the odds look in her favor, she’ll do whatever she can to fight and protect those around her, On the flip side, when the odds are against her, she won’t hesitate to focus solely on saving herself. If, once she’s managed to guarantee her survival, there are still people in need, Setsuko might risk saving them, but only she assesses her odds of dying lower than her odds of surviving.

Honest: Honesty is a trait that Setsuko values in others, and expects nothing less from herself. She doesn’t spew information needlessly. However, when asked a question, she will usually answer truthfully. The only situation in which she may stretch the truth or downright lie is when what she says may be used to bring harm to either her, or anyone close to her. Any other situation can expect absolute honesty, perhaps even brutal honesty.

Flaws

Asocial: Though she may have the physical appearance necessary to be popular among those trapped in Sword Art Online, Setsuko prefers to linger in the background. Partly due to her awkward nature, and partly due to large groups draining her energy. The more people surrounding her, the higher the probability of her losing her cool and breaking down. As such, she does her best to keep the number of companions she travels with to a bare minimum, if any at all, to keep herself at peak performance levels. A single companion is preferred, but she’ll occasionally find herself working in a group of four.

Cold: Blunt, sarcastic, and apathetic towards those she doesn’t know, Setsuko comes off to many as a very detached individual. Her motives and true feelings can only be read by those she deems worthy, or those who intentionally bring themselves closer to her. As a result, to most, she seems like someone you’d rather keep your guard up around; she seems like a wild card, which she most certainly is. Staying away from her has been the common response so far, and it’s one that is almost preferable.

Vulnerable: Despite her cold exterior, Setsuko is, in truth, deeply emotional. Fear, anxiety, and self-doubt all eat slowly away at her composure. Desires to pour her heart out often end unfulfilled, further adding to the outburst waiting to be released. Whoever may be around her is faced with a ticking time bomb without warning as to when it will go off. Those caught in the explosion and manage to survive will find themselves not only an ally, but a friend willing to do anything for them. Whether it’s worth it is up for debate.

Self-Critical: Setsuko may be harsh towards others, but she is even harder on herself. Every major mistake sends her further down the path of self-doubt, which she’ll emotionally beat herself up on. Even the minor mistakes bring her great distress. Depression only adds to her lack of self-worth, and gives her a constant feeling of worthlessness.
