Her thoughts were interrupted at the sound of voices, coming from nearby. Beside her, Yuki stood at attention, the fur on the back of her neck standing up as she silently watched the area beyond. Nari placed a hand on the fox's back, before pulling herself to her feet. She glanced outwards, trying to find a source for the voices before realising that they were likely around the corner, just out of their sight. Whispering lowly so that only Yuki would hear her, Nari carefully moved forwards towards the opening in their hiding spot. "Alright, I'm feeling better, so why don't we see what's waiting for us outside..."

Twisting herself so that she could see out into the main cavern without fully exposing herself, Nari glanced around, looking for whomever waited outside. In the distance, she could see groups of bandits - a quick count confirmed that there were six of them, seemingly roaming around the area, as if searching for something. 

A small tugging at her pants caused Nari to look down, finding the small winter fox staring up at her. The look carried an air of concern, and Nari couldn't help but shake her head in response. She had no urge to do anything overtly dangerous, but they needed to go through the group in order to get anywhere - lest they be stuck here forever. She whispered down towards the fox, hoping to get its cooperation in her decision. "The only way out, is forward."

Nari waited for the small shift in the fox's body that acknowledged it was ready to rush out. It didn't take long, Yuki accepting, or agreeing with her desired course of action - something that she knew she wouldn't be able to figure out right now. Perhaps one day, she would better understand her companion, or maybe she would always be lost about what it truly desired - if it had any desires, that was.

For the time being, Nari turned her attention to getting them out of here. It was the only thing that mattered, right now. Their escape from the cavern, breaking free of the mess she had gotten them into, and finishing the quest. She figured that if she could take down these groups, it would maybe be enough. This will never end, no matter what I do...so why bother doing more than required? Cardinal will always just restart it, as if nothing ever changed...

That thought drove her forward, making her steps fall with anger at the fact that she was stuck in a world that never seemed to get better. It was always a push forward, a struggle to survive and make a difference - only to have that difference reset mere moments later. As her scythe twirled around, catching the closest three by surprise, Nari felt herself burning with rage. Rage against Cardinal, against Aincrad, against Kayaba. Against myself for coming here to begin with...

One had managed to avoid her strike, the individual nearly falling over its feet as it rushed backwards in an attempt to escape. Nari was on them all before any had a chance to draw their weapons, lashing out left and right with her scythe in a display of death and destruction that would likely have been considered concerning by many of those she had once walked the paths of Aincrad alongside. She gave no mercy, falling upon her victims in a way that bespoke her rage, her anger at everything that had occurred and continued to occur. Her desire to escape, to live, to strike back, all released against the NPCs before her.

"I am but the guide to the life beyond this, come to walk you through your final moments. I am but the anger, pent and released, giving life. May your final moments relish in that fear." Her words were nonsense, nothing more than ideas flowing from her as she took her revenge upon NPCs that had done nothing to trap her here - their only crime being created and controlled by the system that over saw everything. Pieces used by Cardinal, to fulfil the wishes of Kayaba. And I will destroy all of them...if it means escape. If it means surviving. I will unleash the nine hells upon this world...just for a chance...

The final two had come rushing from her side, either hoping to flank her or to catch her off guard entirely. Either way, their plan was disrupted by the small bundle of white that shot outwards and towards them, blocking their forward movement and allowing Nari to deal with the original one who had remained. Turning to the two newcomers, Nari had allowed her scythe to flow through a circling movement, stopping it behind her for a brief moment to allow herself to centralise her balance.

Either sensing her movements, or simply understanding what was coming next, Yuki had retreated to provide Nari with the space she needed to advance upon the targets. Her scythe flashed outwards, catching the first individual and embedding itself into their side for a brief moment, the stun effect causing the body to go rigid as it froze in place. A quick backwards slash caught the second individual midair, the power behind Nari's strike sending it flying to slam into the cavern wall, before exploding into a shower of shards.

Just one more... She moved around the far side of the individual, taking a deep breath as she readied herself. She just needed to land one more hit to finish this all off, and then she'd be able to head home. And hopefully leave all of this behind her...

Nari's scythe flowed through the air, creating a soft breeze as she twirled it around herself, bringing about her movements to a crescendo. Her movements weren't meant to be flashy, or to show off, but rather to create a storm of directions to confuse the target before her, hoping to create openings in his defence that wold allow her to land her hit without fault or effort. Designed to create a moment of hesitation, that would provide the landing point she needed to end it all.

She wasn't left disappointed, as the individual's blade raised high into the air to block what they thought was an attack from above, allowing Nari to bring the blade short and underneath, driving it up into the chest of the individual and out the back - holding still for a single breath before her target exploded from existence. She let the scythe slowly lower back into her normal, comfortable position. Quietly, she listened for any further sounds of life nearby, her ears straining to catch anything...and her breath slowly releasing after a few seconds when she was sure she was alone now.

"That should be all of them...what do you say, Yuki? Should we head home now? I...I'm done with this place, for now at least..." She doubted the small fox would complain - Nari was well aware that this floor was one of her least favourite locations. The heat on the main levels of it were enough to be uncomfortable for Nari, let alone the fox whom was covered in fur all throughout.

The tunnels sounded eerily quiet to Nari's ears as she made her way back along paths that she had taken on the way in. It made sense, considering that she'd torn apart any bandits that she'd come across on her way in. Still, the lack of life that seemed to surround her - or even the lack of non-living - felt unsettling. The place had a deserted feel to it, as if there hadn't been life here for a long, long time, and no matter how she tried to shake the feeling it just wouldn't go away.

"Chilly. That's the best way to describe it. A chill that seems to hover over the very soul, rather than just the air..." She glanced down at Yuki to find the fox staring up at her as the two continued their walk. Although the fox couldn't say anything in response, Nari got the impression from its eyes that it agreed - both with the sentiment, as well as the eery feeling that seemed to hover over the place itself. Which only made it more uncomfortable for Nari. "Let's just...get out of here and get home. I don't think I ever want to come back here, if I can help it..."

The small fox gave a yip of agreement, before sprinting forward towards the next corner. Nari called out after her, warning her with a less-than-stern voice. "Hey! Don't go too far ahead, just in case...although I don't think we're going to run into anyone else here."

The tunnels somehow seemed longer on the way out. As Nari turned yet another corner, she found herself questioning if it had taken this long to get where she was going on the way in. She knew that the return trip always felt different - for some people, it was faster. For others, it would feel as if eternity itself was stretching outwards - trapping them longer and longer in the same spot. Nari had never taken the time to consider it either way, but as she stopped at the T-section and glanced around she couldn't help but wonder; Did I take a wrong turn...?

She checked her mini-map again, making sure that she was going the right way. Not that it told her anything she didn't already know - it did, however, confirm that she had almost reached the exit. A sigh of relief escaped her lips as she thought about how close she was to being free from these underground tunnels. A feeling that stopped dead as she realised it meant being back on the blistering surface of floor nine; a suffering that she dreaded almost as much as being in the tunnels.

"Sucks, either way...well, only way out is through more shitty places. Come on Yuki, let's get out of here..." The fox gave a confused yip, as if unsure of what Nari was talking about - but happy to follow along regardless. She could see the final corner ahead, the light drifting around it lighting it up as if a beacon calling her to freedom. Wait...light? There shouldn't be any light...

She stopped to check her mini-map again, confirming that there was still a final small bend before she was out. Which meant that the light wouldn't be filtering in this far beneath the ground. Nari felt her stomach flip slightly as she considered the possibilities. It could be another player, coming to do the quest she'd just completed. None of the NPCs have reset yet though...which they should have done, if that were the case. Her mind drifted towards darker possibilities - groups of players hunting other players, for whatever purpose they felt they needed to do such a thing. 

Uncertain about what lay ahead, Nari found herself sliding up to the corner, coming to a stop and listening for any sounds, before glancing around the corner quickly. What she saw, was a lone individual standing in the centre of the tunnel, a smile on his face that bespoke violence. She pulled her head back, hoping that he hadn't noticed her. The hope, however, was dashed away as a cocky voice filled the air.

"Come on out, little one. I can basically hear you breathing from here!" A laugh filled the air that matched the tone of voice, as if trying to taunt her from hiding. Her hand gripped her scythe tighter, trying to fight against the temptation. She knew better than to rush headlong into a fight, especially one where her opponent was something dangerous - which this individual very much presented the image of being. He was waiting for me...that alone should be concerning.

She knew that standing behind the corner wouldn't get her home, though, and that her only option was to push through this new threat. Gripping her scythe tightly, she took a shallow breath before rushing from covering. Her feet carried her straight towards her target, the blade slashing through the air in an upwards strike as she brought the curved weapon down to bear on the man.

Whoever the man was, he was fast. Nari's scythe caught nothing but open air as the man moved, putting distance between the two of them as he sought to escape the purple-haired woman's weapon. Nari shifted her stance as she went, hoping to chase the man with a backhanded strike - only to find him on the opposite side of her, his arms pulled back as he prepared to strike out at her in return. Not ready to give him such an opening, she pushed off with her one planted food, forcing herself towards him - and in turn forcing the man to readjust, and miss his initial strike.

The two parried back and forth, trying desperately to land the first hit - something that each knew could tell the difference in how the fight would end. Nari felt herself giving ground slowly, being pushed deeper back into the tunnel as the flurry of blows from the man assaulted her defences, not giving her any ground to strike back as she stepped, and stepped, and stepped. Need...to take back...the offensive...here...

"Looking pretty tired there! I'm so, so going to get you back for what you did to my underlings! Oh, am I ever going to make you hurt! Just you watch!" More laughter as the man suddenly broke through her defences, his fist slamming into Nari's jaw and knocking her flying. She could feel the pain, even though she knew there was none - her mind filling in the blanks for her as she sprawled across the floor.

As the second blow landed into her stomach, Nari began to worry. The man was on top of her, smashing aside her defences like they were absolutely nothing, giving her no time to recover and rebound on her assault. She was helpless beneath his flurry, helpless to do anything but accept it. She felt the worry, the fear, beginning to gnaw at her spine - the tingling feeling rushing to her fingertips and loosening the grip on her scythe, making her arms heavy and her breathing shallow. She could feel the panic taking over, the concern for her safety - her very survival - becoming paramount.

A flash of white caught her eyes, and suddenly the bandit was gone from sight, pulled away by the small winter fox that had rushed in to help her. To make sure she was safe, and provide her with an opportunity to get her footing underneath her again. An opportunity that she wasn't going to waste. Leaping to her feet, Nari put some space between herself and the bandit, twirling her scythe into a ready position before setting her feet. If it's a fight to the death he wants...it's a fight to the death he's going to get. But it won't be mine. I can promise him that much... Her determination set on her face, Nari called Yuki back to her, the fox settling in behind her, hissing at the man in an almost catlike way - a testament to the fox's nature, more so than anything else. Nari smiled in response to the action, before turning a hardened gaze towards the bandit. "Let's dance, Yuki..."

Laughter met her words, and as Nari waited for the man to rush forwards, she couldn't help but noticed the overconfidence in his face, in his body, in his very movements. His arms were wide, leaving openings that were perfect for her strikes - so long as she could match his speed. I don't need to match his speed...I just need to predict his movements. Know where he's going to go, react and overcome. Surprise him with planning, with learning him. She waited for him to come close enough before unleashing her fury, the scythe dancing in a pattern that forced him back, to the left, to the right, then underneath.

She watched as he reacted exactly as she had expected him to, suddenly smiling as she realised she had him right where she wanted him. Another parry, and then she was curling the scythe around, preparing for a cross-slash that would connect with his sternum. Except she pulled the strike halfway through, drawing it under and over in response to his backstep - faster than he had expected. She watched the look of surprise cross his face as the blade embedded itself into his thigh, the stun effect leaving the man unmoving - hatred in his eyes burning as Nari stepped backwards. 

A quick breath was all she allowed herself, setting her body into motion even as she knew the stun was coming to an end. She couldn't let her guard down, not even now - especially not now. Not if she wanted to get out of here alive. Adapt...overcome. You can do this.

His fury unleashed the moment the stun effect wore off, his body twisting to meet her and rushing forwards. Nari was there to greet him, her scythe repelling his first onslaught, before putting him on the defensive - the whirlwind of blade and haft forcing the man backwards into the wall, giving him no where further to retreat. She watched as the anger grew within him, the expressions on his face taking on something akin to madness as he tried without success to get through her onslaught. She focused on only one thing, keeping him at bay, wearing down his energy, tiring him out. She watched for any openings, careful not to fall for feints. 

Her opportunity came when she saw his side shift, opening him up for a strike from her scythe. A quick shift in the whip like motion that she had been pulling the weapon through, and suddenly the blade was embedded in his side, his screams echoing against the tunnel's walls as he shouted out in pain and frustration. Nari's eyes burned as she activated the sword skill, watching as the flames danced down the blade and into his skin, before lighting him aflame. She quickly pulled the blade out, stepping backwards as he seemed to explode for a brief second, the fires engulfing him before subsiding slightly. 

She knew that he was still dangerous, still in the fight. She still couldn't let herself be too careful, and as she watched the burning man step forward, she knew that she would only have to push harder to finish this - but she was determined to do just that. You may respawn when you die...but I don't. And I won't fall to the likes of you. Not now, not ever. Not if I'm going to clear this game.

The flames seemed to cause him more pain, more distress, than the actual attacks that Nari had made earlier. As he rushed forwards, Nari barely managed to parry his attacks. Her scythe seemed to shake in response, the weapon becoming heavy in her hand as she tried to keep it between him and herself. She could hear the screams echoing still, as if a daemon that sped him along his path towards his target. The face was pulled back into a snarl, reminding Nari of a snapping animal trying to get to its quarry behind bars, desperately pushing against them. She pushed against him with the scythe, forcing him off to her left side.

Almost instantly, he was on her again, his left hand grasping the scythe's haft as he slammed the right into her face, pulling back and aiming to hit her again. Another flash of white, and Yuki was hanging off the fist, digging her teeth into the man's flesh - barely causing him to bleed, and yet forcing him to reel back in pain and surprise. As soon as he had disengaged from Nari, the fox had released the man, falling back behind her companion once more. Nari breathed a thanks to the fox, before driving the bottom haft of the scythe into the man, pushing him backwards as hard as she could and forcing the space between them.

"Oh...I'm so going to kill you. I'm going to kill you!" Madness. It was the only thing that she could connect his words with. The loss of one's mind, the loss of sanity. The loss of everything. Something that Nari could feel pity for, if she didn't know better. Instead of answering him verbally, she simply spun the scythe again, settling it back into the ready stance behind her back, her muscles tensed and ready to launch the moment he moved.

Crazed. It was the only way to explain the man's actions. He rushed forwards, undeterred by the damage that Nari had already done to him. Uncaring about the danger he was putting himself in, just to reach her. Uncaring that his life would be ended if he kept going. Nari couldn't help but wonder at the madness. Not that she could do anything about it, the man was determined to pummel her into the ground, and given the chance he might just be able to do so. Not that I'm going to give him the chance to do that...I won't go down that easily, ever.

Her scythe whipped outwards from behind her, the speed of the movement catching the man offguard, slamming into him and forcing him into the wall. Nari saw the slash across his waist, the trail of blood that it left behind as he stumbled back to his feet. He wavered, for a moment, before trying to rush forwards again. Nari was ready however, the scythe coming from underneath and catching the man in the jaw, before erupting into flames once more. 

The screaming matched with the smell of burnt hair and clothing, hitting Nari in a way that cause revulsion within her. Not that she had the time now to consider it. For the time being, she needed to press her attack, to try and push him back into a corner. To end this fight...I need to press this to the point where he cannot ever face me in confidence again...

Pressing the attack worked. Nari slammed the blade into the man again and again and again, his arm blocking the majority of her strikes - but not allowing him the chance to escape her weapon. It was enough to force him back into the wall, where he was little more than prey for the point of her blade once she managed to pierce through his blocks. She was careful, consistent, in control. Each strike determined, focused and calmly placed - each one meant to do little more than wear him down and hold him in place. She watched as the blood continued to leak from his chest wound, depleting his health points more with each passing second. She knew it wouldn't last forever - but it was just another strike against the man that gave her the advantage. 

His arms suddenly dropped to his waist, and Nari saw her opening. Her scythe slammed into him suddenly, the blade driving halfway into his body as she forced the weapon against him. She could see his eyes suddenly look up - before his entire body froze, the stun taking over once more as she pulled the weapon back out and pushed herself away. She knew better than to be close to her opponents when the stun wore off, and considering how dangerous this one already was she wasn't taking any chances.

"This fight won't be as easy as you may have expected...be prepared for that." Nari spoke softly. Her words carried no signs of confidence, or contempt. A simple statement, meant to make a point to the system. She wasn't going to go quietly into the dark, no matter what it planned to do.

No matter what she did, Nari knew this fight was far from over. The enemies health bar still stood higher than her own - something that she would only fix if she took a risk. She considered it, for a brief moment, before realising the folly behind it. It was better, for the moment, to press the attack. To try and get the advantage over him in order to end this fight sooner. It was already far too dangerous to do anything more than considerations.

As she pressed herself away from him with the haft again, Nari felt something change - the weight on the end suddenly disappearing. Her eyes shifted to see him beside her suddenly, his face next to hers. That wicked grin staring into her with an evil intent. Then she felt the fist connect with her stomach, driving the air from her lungs as she pulled away from it. There was no pain, and yet she could feel every ounce of it as it coursed through her.

In response, she lashed out with her scythe's haft, catching him in the side of the face and forcing him away at the same time. She could hear the cracking sound as he slammed into a nearby wall, driven down to his knees for a brief second. A second was all she needed, as she pulled up her menu, calling forth the item she needed without even looking at the display itself. She knew this was the time to use it, the only time she was likely to get.

The bottle landed in her hand, the colouring hard to decipher in the dark - but the item well known in Nari's mind. She raised it to her lips, downing it as quickly as she could, the taste leaving a bitterness on her tongue. Not that she cared, as she watched the health bar climb once more to a comfortable position. It wasn't much, but it was enough to tip the balance in the fight - to place her above her target, if only for the moment. Anything beyond that, and she'd have needed to call upon a miracle. 

This is far too close for my liking...I need to find an advantage. Something that puts me well ahead. Something that makes it comfortable for me...defence, for the moment, might be worth considering. Wear him down further while I suffer through anything he has to throw at me. Although taking down his own defences would be nice, too... She watched as he stumbled to his feet, the damage he'd taken already leaving him in a weakened state. Not that she could call it much, but it was enough to give her courage. To drown out the concerns that had been sitting in her mind until now. She had a chance, and she was going to take it - no matter what he threw at her. Come on. Let's finish this and get home.

He'd begun to stir, to move towards her, and Nari found herself dropping into her ready stance immediately, watching his movements as he approached. The grin remained, but his body seemed to falter ever so slightly in his approach, as if it was slowly betraying him. Slowly giving up on the fight. Exactly what she needed in order to get ahead.

She could feel the victory before her, barely within reach. She knew that now was the most dangerous time - the time when most individuals would try and leap forward for their victory, only to be caught in a feint or trap that was meant to lure them in. The feeling of security as dangerous as if they simply lowered their weapons and gave up. She wasn't ready to give in to that feeling. Not yet. She knew better, knew that she simply needed to wait - to be the one who lured them into the trap. Knew that this man would fall for it, based on his previous actions. I just need to...there!

He moved faster than she had expected, no hesitation in his actions as he rushed her. Driving straight towards her on a headlong charge likely meant to bull through her attempts to thwart him. Instead, Nari stepped to the side, allowing herself to be open - and for him to fly straight by her. Her scythe whirled around behind her, before cutting upwards into the man's chest on the far side. The two stood still for a moment, a whisper of breath leaving him in disbelief as he realised that he'd been defeated. In the silence, Nari spoke. "I am the Reaper, come to guide you into the life beyond this. For every life that has been taken, I shall take six score in return. My revenge will not be swift, it will not be quick. It will be cold, calculated, and considerate. Tell that, to Cardinal."

The man burst into shards as she finished her words, as if having waited to hear them. Whether or not he would carry them forwards, she didn't care. Her hand swiped away the notification as it declared the quest complete, barely noticing that she had unlocked a new skill. For now, she just wanted to make her way home, to relax after everything she had done here. "Come on Yuki, let's get out of here now..."
