Her parents, her twin sister, Ophélie, and herself always had food on their plate and could afford a few extravagances from time to time. Her mother was a cook, her father a wood-carver, while her sister embraced the medical ways, aspiring to become a surgeon. Contrary to her close ones, Charlotte always had a knack for sports, especially fighting ones. She loved seeing and partaking in feats of strength or dexterity, competing against each others in sportsmanlike fashion. Hence, when she was young, she took aikido courses and shifted towards fencing around her fourteenth birthday, becoming more astute and perceptive by the months. Throughout her training, she reached a good level, being amongst the best fighters of her dojo. But one thing stuck with her for a long time. She was the sole girl and had to put up with sexism coming from some peers, especially since her build was getting increasingly burlier. While her masters and most of her mates were nice to her, it stuck a wedge in her, pushing her farther and farther away from what she loved. Simply because she was scared of people's reactions, despite her being good enough to school most of them. This caused Charlotte to abandon fencing on her nineteenth (19th) birthday and became a shut-in, only ever going out to try to apply for a job. Nonetheless, she couldn't give up what moved her and kept training alone in her room whenever she felt like it. After months of slacking, she managed to get a job as a mover, strengthening her build even more, but not without a few mockeries here and there about her being a girl in a man's world. Thanks to this job, she met a co-worker named Leo, with whom she clicked instantly. In a few years of time, they fell in love with each other and moved in shortly after. With him, she felt happy and secure. She could do whatever she wanted and not be judged. Leo was a bit nerdy, always talking about new and upcoming technologies with such a passion, it always captivated the young lady. On the flip-side, she was always eager to teach, show and tell him all about her own passions. That's how they joined together and started playing a few TTRPGs and MMORPGs on their spare time. It was nice and all, but for the lady it was not the same as the real deal, and it started to show. There was some kind of addiction that couldn't be fulfilled with just a simple mouse and keyboard. There was this itch to feel alive while battling tougher and tougher opponents. A dream that kept on growing in their hearts, longing for the day such premises could happen. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Beginning of a dream __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ And then, it happened. A new technology was being teased, the NerveGear. A device that could propel you physically into a virtual environment, making you the protagonist of another life. After that, they heard about the biggest bomb of their life, a new VRMMORPG called Sword Art Online was getting released on this platform, ticking every single of their wants. Leo had been stalking every single forum, discussion thread, anything that could be hinting at a release date was scanned by his watchful eyes until he found what he needed. Even with his thorough searching, he was far from the first person to take hold of such technology, but thanks to his eagerness and preparation towards everything around the NerveGear, he'd managed to secure two sets for himself and his beloved. It was D-Day, SAO servers were going live in a few minutes, everything was ready. They were eager to take the dive into this promising new world. Since she was still too shaken by her experiences in real life, she'd gone with a genderbent of herself, because she thought that being a strong man was a better prospect than being seen as a strong woman. Leo had nothing against that and humored her, going along with her plan and going himself with a female avatar, called Olesa so that they still matched somewhat. (FC: Netzach / Library of Ruina) It sure was a weird feeling being in a video game that felt and looked like real life, but they managed just fine after a few minutes marveling at all these new horizons opening up for them. After finding and complimenting each other on their avatar's looks, they explored the Town of Beginnings, looking forward to the adventures they'll end up taking part in. Charlotte wanted to go with an axe, while Leo was thinking of clawing at their enemies. For a few hours, they did nothing more than stroll through the noisy streets of this place, watching in awe as they felt like it could be a second life for them. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Shattered dreams __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Everything was going fine, it was a beautiful day spent admiring a world full of wonders. Except when everything went to shit in an instant. In the span of a few seconds, every single player was transported to the central plaza of the Town of Beginnings. Nobody knew why or how. Maybe an event to celebrate the successful launch? Nothing as such. The sky clouded itself, taking a red-ish tint while a gigantic hooded figure appeared, claiming to be Kayaba Akihiko, the mind behind SAO. He then explained to us that we were trapped inside the game, with no hope of escaping until one of us clears the 100th floor and kill the final boss. Shocked, we all went and checked for our options and indeed, the log-out button was nowhere to be seen. Moreover, to emphasize on all of this, we were all gifted a pocket mirror that, once equipped as instructed by the GM, destroyed the appearance of our avatar to show our real selves. Charlotte was shook, seeing herself back in her body, in this world where she thought she could give her all without fear of being judged. Even worse, the game would no long support any form of respawn and anybody that died in game would have their brain destroyed by the NerveGear. Leo had explained to Charlotte that it was indeed possible because of the configuration of the device, but he didn't want to believe it. Taking Charlotte's hand and dragging her towards the fields and the edge of the map, he decided that since he couldn't log out, there was only one way to wake up and it was to cause a great shock to the brain. Provoking the falling effect that you can sometimes feel and that wakes you up in the middle of the night. He wanted to replicate this feeling by jumping in the void, waking up and freeing Charlotte from their new digital prison. He smiled at her and took the leap. Leaving her alone, too shaken to take a single step in any direction. She waited for what seemed an eternity for Leo to wake her up also, but nothing happened. She treaded back to the city, stumbling upon what would've been the Resurrection place. A few people were gathered here around a huge hunk of metal with names engraved on it. Every single player's names, some barred with a date, an hour and a cause of death. Looking with disbelief, she found her own name, still looking sharp, and finally stumbled on her boyfriend's. Olesa 18:27 - 6/11/2022 - Committed suicide by jumping off the edge of Aincrad She couldn't contain her tears, and collapsed here and there, just like a lot of others, letting every cell of her being scream. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dawn of a new dream __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ She then spent a few days wandering the streets without aim or purposes, just an empty shell trying to cope with this increasingly difficult reality that everything she'd knew up until now was being thrown out of the window. But not wanting to be left alone and remembering that there was still a glimmer of hope residing in the game's finale, she raised her chin, determined to be one of those that would help in dealing the final blow to the creature that trapped them inside here. After all, it was still a game and if there was an end to it, nothing could stop them to claim it. With newfound strength, she walked the main road towards the beginning of her adventures. The tale of Avoryn have yet to be lived. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Virtues __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Spoiler Committed Whenever she agrees to do something or swears that she'll do something, Avoryn will do her best to fulfill this request and see it finished. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hyper-focus Whenever Avoryn is engaged into an ongoing action, she'll occult everything not worth paying attention to around her, making distractions less effective. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Resilience Comes what may, Avoryn will always get back on her feet, weapon in hand to fend off adversity and push through tough times. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Flaws __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Spoiler Low self-esteem Because of her life experiences, Avoryn has a really low self-esteem being seen as a woman, which makes her fight at a lower level that she really is in fear of being mocked for being more able than some men. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Naive Because of her nature, Avoryn will often believe others without second thought, making herself run headfirst into troubles or getting scammed more easily by less scrupulous merchants. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dependent Avoryn couldn't survive alone.
