[F21 | R8 Blacksmith] The Knight Shift (Open)

'Yes.' Morrígan kept her features controlled, but she was surprised that someone had made the connection between her name and the myths and legends of old. 'My father is a historian, specifically in old Eurocentric anthropological exploration. He had... interesting hobbies and avenues of research.'

Her voice had hesitated only briefly as she considered her words. In truth, her father had been near obsessive with the periods and histories, purchasing anything that could be related to Nordic, Germanic or British Isle ancients, often far above fair prices.

'It's not often that someone makes the correlation between the name and it's origins. You must be well versed and familiar with such stories yourself.' The smith had turned towards the craft of hammer, anvil and creation. She watched, in a measure of patience and engrossment as the form of the shield came to being. The piece presented to her was a perfect representation of the request she had made, and as it was handed over she found herself pausing at the smith's words.

'It has long been inscribed into my teaching and upbringing that an action taken must be met with a reaction; that a request must be met with remuneration in kind.' Her expression had been serious as she had spoken, a look that was well practiced over decades of upbringing. But it broke as she let a welcomed smile through the facade. 'But, I was also taught to welcome a gift given in earnest, especially one crafted by a master of their trade.'

She collected the shield, testing it's weight and balance and finding it a perfect fit for herself. Giving a curtsy which carried far more refinement than her original greeting, she gave a final smile to the smith before taking her leave. 'I shall return once I'm in need of further equipment - but do not think that I will take gifts every time I visit. Next order shall be paid in full, and I'll heed no countenance to my declarations.'

Morrígan picks up Raven Shield.

Raven Shield | T1 Perfect Shield | Paralyze I | Thorns II
A simple kite shield which contains a purple facing behind a black raven's silhouette. Two pairs of straps, clearly designed for tying to arm or back, line the inside of the shield's form.

The shop was similar in appearance to her last visit; the heat of it all washing over her gently as she stepped within its confines. Morrígan took a few moments to browse the wares, trying to decide what it was that she truly desired in her new creation. She knew that it would be but a temporary piece - a stop gap meant to do nothing more than provide a balance for the factors that she'd already focused on divulging into without concern.

'It's good to see you again, Sire Smith.' She smiled as she approached the smith and owner of the shop, pulling up her menu again as she quickly sketched out the final details of the item she wanted. It was simplistic in nature, she thought, and yet fit her motif almost perfectly. 'I'm hoping to obtain a simple item, one which is...well, a perfect fit for me, in the time being. Would something like this be plausible in design? Any ideas that you may have, I'm more than open to listening.'

Spirits lifted by a new commission from a returning customer, Ren set himself to work immediately, crafting the piece with meticulous care.  Even as he worked fine filigree into the flat of the blade, he admired the artistry of the request and found himself surprised by his degree of precision.  Maybe practice did lead closer to perfection, after all?

"Your will, m'lady." Bowing as he presented the hafted blade, he'd always been one to appreciate a bit of dramatic flare and found her formal bearing and manner endearing and strangely familiar.  "I've adjusted the length and weight balance to better suit your height and hand span.  Hopefully, this should make it easier to wield, as well as more agile in its movements."

Holding the weapon upright, Ren gauged it against his assumptions regarding her proportions and found them true.  Giving the ash haft one final wipe to remove the last trace of his soot-smudged hand before turning it over to her care.

"I trust this meets with your approval?"

"Er..."

Payment in materials but how much materials? Yue Hua weighed the simple and unassuming appearance of the shop against her confidence in her wallet. Then she strolled in without reaching a conclusion anyway, her ears perked at the sound of a hammer striking an anvil. A blacksmith working away at their daily crafts. Much better than the silence of her fellow tracker's shop.

"Helloooo?" Soon as she was noticed, her steps halted, her tail carefully pointed away from the shop's weapon and armor displays. Yue Hua blinked. "Hi. I need heavy armor and a sword, both Tier 3. I have blueprints for the both of them and you're free to make modifications so long as you ask me first. Would six materials suffice for both?"

Work completed, Ren wiped the sweat from his soot-stained brow as he watched an apprentice tenderly prepare the freshly wrought wares for their new owners.  In a rush to forge and form the armor, he realized he'd taken liberties without verifying first and hoped she would be pleased with the results.  They seemed true to the intent of her original order, with a bit of extra context and history tacked on.  Such was his 'thing' after all, the mostly white-haired smith driving his adventuring companions mad as he strode to study every bit of lore they came across.  Most couldn't understand why he became a blacksmith instead of a scribe, not that the latter had specific game support.

When, at last, all was ready and preparation complete, Ren sent the customer a message to signal preparation for pick up, then lingered until her arrival.

"I hope this meets your expectations.  The armor, particularly, inspired me to embellish a bit more than I should have."

You are immovable. Your only weakness is time. This ornately crafted suit of fine full plate is wrought from sections of earth drake scales.  Each shaped plate is bound by carefully forged links of smelted mithril mined from exposed gorges carved open by waterfalls deep in the Rough Mountains near Taran Village.

When Yue Hua next dropped into the Knight Shift, she was brimming with what seemed like a nervous energy. The ordinarily stoic young woman was restless, very fidgety, she had the end of her feathered tail in her hand because it wouldn't stop thrashing like an excited dog's, and her stupor only lifted some when the blacksmith presented her with her new sword. Yue Hua took it off his hands, examining its detailing closely and testing the feel of its grip.

"Yes," she replied distractedly. She admired how closely it fit her specifications. Not a Wulfrin original like she would have hoped, but Rencesvals did very good work. "It's beautiful. Almost a complete match."

The matter of payment had already been handled on her first visit. Yue Hua swiftly departed for the fields to test her new sword.

Nymoria had been referred to the shop, and although she couldn't remember whether she had attended it before or not, it somehow felt oddly familiar. She wandered into the area with an apprehensive intention, as if scanning for dangers or things that could jump out at her with a sudden intention to harm her. Her appearance was almost school-girlish, and yet at her hip swung a sabre that was clearly meant for anything but fencing.

Slowly she moved up to the counter, waiting for the attendant to notice her before raising her hands and moving them through an intricate collection of signs that would translate within the smith's head. She was careful to explain what she wanted, her eyes never leaving the face of the person even as she showed every desire to do nothing but leave the shop. Would this be possible? I would truly appreciate it, especially in this design and manner...

It took Ren a minute to figure out where the voice was coming from, the ambient din of forge and smithy normally drowning out any such possible clarity, until he spotted his latest customer at the counter and could fathom what was at play.

"Oh!  Sign?  That's astounding!  I never realized that the system could translate.  Huh..." he paused, as if lost in quandary.  "Forgive me for asking, if the nerve gear is already reading your mind to let you control your avatar, and able to process your thoughts, why can't it enable you to think to speak?"  Ren blushed, awkwardly, having blurted out his mind's wanderings without filter and hoping it hadn't offended.  "I'm so sorry.  That was incredibly rude and uncouth.  Please, let me take that order for you." Beet red at his repeated lack of social grace, the smith nodded with understanding and set himself to work immediately, casually tossing aside all other projects from his work bench as if they'd never mattered.

Imbued with uncanny focus and fervent desire for redemption, he had the blade finished in record time, offering it back to the client at no charge.

"Please accept this with my greatest apologies.  Again, I meant no disrespect."

Do not feel the need to apologise. Nymoria grinned as she signed in response to the smith's oddly personal questions. She took a second to collect her thoughts, before trying to answer as best as she could. I am no doctor, or professional, but I believe that the limitations are...physical and mental? I think that it is a fact that I have never spoken aloud in real life, and never developed the skills around speaking...so in here, it is the same. I did not speak in the real world, I do not know how to speak in here...even though it is all in my head.

She cocked her head to the left slightly, an odd expression on her face as she gave a moment's pause. She wasn't sure if any of that made sense, but as the weapon was presented to her, she found herself overcome with excitement which wiped away any doubts about her description and ideas. It is perfect. I wish I could explain my situation more, in return for the craftsmanship you show in your work. Thank you, for this rush order. May you find peace in the days to come.

The door to the Knight Shift nearly flew off the hinges as Acanthus frantically burst into the shop. She appeared half-dressed: In one hand, she held her familiar thistle armor, in the other, a strange and heavy fur coat. Her tunic had been hastily thrown on, and a few fastens were still loose.

"Hi hello thank you for responding at such a last minute." Her words, clearly enunciated, lacked the punctuation that provided her usual poise. Rather than apologizing for her behavior, she threw both the items onto the counter and immediately began to scroll through her inventory to drop the requested payment on the table. "I'm sorry about the rush but the coat just came in and trying to get that *damn* appraiser to message me when he gets any work done--I'm rambling. Sorry, I'm rambling."

She passed Ren a piece of paper with the full request. "I'm supposed to be at my 2v2 fight in about three and a half minutes. I will be eternally grateful if you can do this for me."

"Three and a half..."  Eyes wide, the white-haired smith let the orbs drift down to the disparate items left on his counter, along with hastily scrawled... something... that pretended to be guiding instructions.  They looked more like the sort of scribbles his roommates used to leave when they were too lazy to go do the grocery shopping, and too cheap to actually tell him what they actually needed,  leaving him to guess and ultimately foot the bill.

"Uh... hi?"  It was a start, his brain still struggling to figure out how to transfur the coat onto the other shell without compromising its range of motion, or leading to unintentional static cling.  The dry cleaning costs might be atrocious.  "I suppose I could..."

CLANG!

A nearby apprentice sheepishly recovered the work he'd just dropped and dented for a second time, the original ding glaring with indignity upon the second.  It's owner groaning and facepalming in the background, was hardly reassured.

"Here we go," Ren added, drawing her attention back his way.  "All done, and with two minutes to spare.  Good luck!"

The frantic swordswoman was so relieved by the turnaround she forgot her usual formalities. "Ren, you're a genius!" She leaned over the counter to hug him (assuming he didn't leap back to avoid the sudden lunge), and swiped the improved armor. "Anything you need after this, you name it. After all the work I've rushed through your shop, I don't think I'm even close to paying you back. Quests, items, hell, even some shards or scales, just say the word... Oh, *shit*."

She interrupted herself, checking the system clock. "I'm late. I'm never late. Deep breaths, Acanthus. Remember the routine. Left, left right. I agreed to a dance with Kiyabu to open my fight," she volunteered, already half out the door. "Again, anything you need, Ren. Please let me pay you back."

And just like that, she was gone, leaving the Knight Shift much calmer place.
