[F26-PP] Covert Ladonian Boot Camp

Recommended Posts

Hanging out in a back alley on the lower west side of the Ladonian capital, Freyd surveyed a particular arched doorway about which he'd received multiple recent reports.  Word was that a 5th column element of Razwell loyalists were hiding out in various safe houses throughout the city.  This was likely to be one such location, as confirmed by the gaggle of poorly disguised former imperial guardsmen he'd just seen entering.  There were barely a half-dozen of them, which worked in his favour, provided he kept the initiative. A quick in and out strike would be their best option.

Remembering his promise at the recent raid prep meeting, the Whisper summoned a message window and stamped out a hurried message.  There was no telling how long they might have before the mobs moved on and this location went dormant.  It would have to be now or never.

To: @Morningstar

From: Freyd

You wanted to be better prepared for the next front line raid, right?  I have something in mind that could help you prepare, but it can be a bit of a rough slog.  Meet me at the corner of Silver Crown and Fiori's Firth in Ladonia.  Be discreet.  We're going to bust up some bad guys and try to buff up your level a bit, but we need to make this quick.

Floor Twenty-Six.

Morningstar had yet to visit the place. The floors he avoided were usually grim and bleak so it was unusual that Twenty-Six made the list. Through the grapevine, he had heard of the floor's lore and history, including the infamous Razwell III.

He read over the message he had received from Freyd. The location he had specified was unfamiliar to him. As he stepped off of the city's teleporter, he pulled up his map and poked around at the various places until Silver Crown and Fiori's Firth were visible to him. The walk was not terrible. He slogged his way through the busy streets of Ladonia, trying to take in the sights as he rushed to Freyd's position.

His acquaintance was right where he said he'd be. Morningstar approached, his armor cloaked in grey to add to his discreetness. He had consumed a number of potions and items on his way to the city, unsure of what types of buffs and stats he would require for their mission. The message had been brief and undescriptive, not that he minded.

"Afternoon," he smiled.

Several hours of posing as a city guardsman was starting to grow dull.  It simply wouldn't pass notice to be standing on the street corner as himself, and Cardinal's rules of engagement were malleable these days.  Mobs were getting smarter, and more dangerous.  At Morningstar's arrival, Freyd spared a moment to assess.  Years as an appraiser had taught him to evaluate people as well as items.  'He has sense enough to show up wearing inconspicuous garb,' he thought to himself, blue eyes scanned his companion's face and features.  'Buffs sorted too?  Good.'  As first impressions went, Morningstar had just made a good one, in the field was where it counted most.  Player events were often little more than masquerade balls where false selves mingled too freely with the truth.  They present too poor a measure of who people really are.

"Afternoon."  A smile returned and nod of approval.  Freyd's gaze drew a line to an unassuming alcove across the way and down a bit.  There were no marking or any evidence of illicit activity whatsoever.  Wouldn't be much of a safehouse if there was.  "That's the place," he added, his voice barely above a whisper and martially masked as he pulled up his trademark cowl as replacement for the guardsman's cap he'd borrowed earlier.  Its previous owner no longer needed it.  "We'll find four footmen, a pair of sergeants, and some manner of former officer.  If we act quickly we can catch them in groups and keep them from aiding each other.  We take each down swiftly and move on to the next.  They may have a bolt hole.  If so, we need to block it.  Any that escape could bring more and risk us being overwhelmed."

Subtly scanning the alleyway one last time, the coast appeared to be clear.  Now might be their best chance.

"This is a good test.  The raid won't likely offer much opportunity to rest.  Any questions?"

A black-clad hand gestured to the door, the garment's surface roiling with an oily sheen that seemed... hungry.

Freyd's guard disguise looked a bit silly. It appeared to do the trick, though, as he had not gained the attention of any curious eyes. He listened closely as Freyd spoke and, in his head, repeated the list of enemies that they expected to encounter. Four footmen, two sergeants, and an officer. Seven loyalists in total. It did not sound like a lot; however, he doubted that Freyd would be so cautious if the mission was easy. The plan provided was sound: get in and out as quickly as possible. Together, he thought they could manage.

Time ticked away and the date of the boss raid approached swiftly. The final stages of preparation were beginning and this would be one of his last opportunities to add some padding to his stats before it came. While he lacked the experience of the front liners, he was receptive and open to their criticism. He looked over his gear once more. It had its flaws but they were not fatal and could be mitigated with time and adjustments. Meteor replaced his Royal Greatsword today; he opted for the lighter sword, agility being the goal. The bleed and paralysis enhancements were a bonus, although the weapon was old and in need of upgrading.

Freyd finished his speech, offering the chance for him to ask further questions before they began. He took a moment to think but came up blank. What was left to ask?

"No questions. I'll follow your lead."

Times had not been kind to the remnants of Razwell's personal guards, their numbers scattered, honor tattered and pockets laid bare by privation.  What few coins each of the grunts in this platoon had left to their names were presently heaped onto a rickety table in the centre of the tiny home's parlour with barely enough room for four chairs to crowd around.

"Fold," grumble the one nearest the door, tossing his cards on the table in a fit of pique and standing to make his way towards the piss pot in the corner.  Glamorous accommodations, these were not.  No longer beholden to any sense of ceremony, the man's breeches were already untied as he made to slip by his nearest mate.  That's when the deadbolt on the heavy timber door behind him exploded into a shrapnel cloud of wooden splinters and swung the slab open to catch him on his backside.  Falling forward, his efforts at bracing failed and he crashed right through their gaming surface riding it to the far end of the room, but leaving his pants still pinned beneath the broken door.

"What the...!?"  Too slow.  Freyd was still moving forward, having smiled at Morningstar just an instant before leaning into the very sprint that just burst through the dungeon barrier. Still careening like an angry, lethal pinball, his fist caught the heavy set man on the left right in the ear, shattering his head in to a shower of golden sparks that sprayed against the back wall.  Grabbing the tacky chandelier hanging from the ceiling, the Whisper spun and caught the next two with a single spiral kick, sending them to the same fate.  Only the half-naked loser in the floor remained, and a single door into the next room blocked by his crumpled form.

Landing with the grace of a panther on the prowl, Freyd sought to blend in with the surrounding shadows.  The chandelier had other plans and came crashing to the floor, dousing him in a cloud of dust and ruining his plans.  Still hacking and coughing, he pointed twinned fingers like a gun at the sole survivor, motioning Morningstar to press the attack.

Freyd wasted no time beginning his assault on the loyalists. The blonde watched as his partner bolted around the room, shocking the foot soldiers and crashing through their no-longer-friendly game of cards. Their attempts to dispel the attack were futile; their opponent was too fierce. He moved efficiently and precisely, striking down three of the four turncoats and leaving the remainder to Morningstar. The survivor was an easy target, pinned to the floor as a result of Freyd's devilishly clean maneuvers. Morningstar's Charge skill activated and he felt his body push into overdrive. From one end of the room to the other, he dashed at lightspeed, blade raised up and pointed towards the man.

It was less flashy than the previous barrage but it did the trick. In a flash of gold, Meteor entered the chest of the turncoat. It was a clean stab, dropping his health bar to zero and killing him instantly. The first squad was down—almost sixty percent of the work was already finished in what felt like a manner of seconds. Morningstar turned to his partner, nodding to him.

"Nice work," he smiled, leaning his straight sword against his cloaked shoulder plate.

With the last Ladonian gone, they were free to proceed to the next area of the dungeon. This time, Morningstar peeked in first. As anticipated, two sergeants stood on the other side of the doorway, muttering to each other inaudibly.

He returned to Freyd. "After you, boss-man," he chuckled.

Cleaning the last of the dust from his garb, Freyd shared in his companion's grin.  How the mobs in the next room hadn't heard anything was somewhat of a minor miracle, but dungeon acoustic were a thing unto themselves. Logic need not apply.  Peering in, up and over the blonde, he could see their next two targets gathered around something on the far side of the room.  No objects were visible in his line. A straight run would simply do the trick.  Nodding to Morningstar to yank open the door, Freyd rushed in with a lunging stride and clocked the nearer man square on the back of head.  Keening screeches fit to wake the dead filled the chamber as the dust on his gloves vanished - sucked into the void within.  Instead of knocking him senseless, Freyd's fist passed right through the mob, shattering its digital mesh and causing its body to collapse like a column of suddenly freed marbles spraying and spilling down all over the floor.

The second went to grab for the sword laid on the table before him.  Freyd flattened his grip with his free hand, the same crinkling and cracking fragment sound confirmed by the shocked and anguished look on the guard's face.  Spinning right, the Whisper's elbow clubbed his foe in the ear while his foot snared his leg and yanked.  The result was a vertical pivot where the Ladonian's head spun down and his feet flipped upward, smashing his face into his own blade.  A second quick jab fractured his stunned form and forced it to collapse like his comrade.  The keening stopped.  Freyd flexed his fingers then quietly cracked his knuckles, pointing towards the next door.

"You're up, champ."

Morningstar ripped the door open, allowing Freyd to take a shot at the two sergeants. He took them out with ease; it was a simple job for someone of his caliber. The blonde followed him inside, looking at the spots where the Ladonians had once stood. It was his turn to show off now, although he was not sure he could live up to the last performance. Once again, nothing stirred beyond the door to the next room. It made him wonder if the soldiers were a bit hard of hearing. He moved for the door, nodding at Freyd's comment. The room was mostly empty but for a large wooden desk and a matching chair. The one whom Morningstar assumed was in charge of the operation sat there, hunched over what appeared to be a map. The door made a creaking sound as he peered in, alerting the sole man on the other side. His cover was blown.

In spite of that, the officer still had to react and draw his weapon. Morningstar was quicker. With no choice but to attack first, he sprinted ahead. A faint trail of light followed his sword, growing the closer he got to his opponent. His sprint turned into a leap and when he felt his feet touch the table, he swiped up, slashing the officer's chest before he could even pull his blade from its scabbard. He crumpled to the ground, Morningstar's stun taking effect immediately.

"Heath!  You craven bastard.  It's about time you finally turned up."  Freyd walked into the room after Morningstar's onslaught had crumpled him to the ground.  Something in his tone implied that the two of them had met before, under less than pleasant circumstances.  The kneeling captain spat out a tooth, wiping away a trail of blood from the corner of his lips with a heavy plate gauntlet that looked far too ornate for a mundane officer.  Freyd punched him across the face when he tried to rise, knocking out a second pearl.

"That was for the ships that never got off the ground."  A derisive sneer dominated the Whisper's angry features as he let the mob regain his feet.  "Morningstar, meet Captain Archibald Heath, servant of the first order to former emperor of Ladonia, and war criminal who ordered the ships of the imperial navy to fire on civilian transports during the rebellion."

"You were all using civilian transports, as I recall," the aging captain growled.  "How were we supposed to tell the difference between those coming to kill us and the rest?"

"Tell yourself whatever you need.  It wasn't that hard to tell.  We were the ones barrelling towards you, not fleeing.  Your gunners didn't much seem to care."  He raised his black gloved hands in feigned innocence.  "Just following orders, right?  Spare your breath."

Old enemies, huh? Morningstar thought as he stared down at Captain Archibald Heath. He lacked the context as well as the emotions that Freyd had but a villain was a villain, in his eyes. He took a breath before bringing his blade upon the captain once more.

The stun wore off and Heath was capable of defending himself again, however. He drew his own sword, smashing it against Morningstar's and knocking it from his hands. The blonde's eyes grew wide, shocked by the Ladonian's sudden increase in speed. Where had that been a moment ago? The golden straight sword flew through the air and he reached to catch it, keeping his eyes on their opponent the entire time. The captain used that opportunity to build a distance between them. He lifted himself from the cold floor and smirked arrogantly at the pair, taunting them.

Meteor returned to Morningstar's hands. He gripped its jeweled hilt tightly this time, his guard up. "My mistake," he said, no longer underestimating their opponent.

Dodging Morningstar's weapon as Heath launched it his way, Freyd tumbled to his right then ran forward to catch the captain in a full body tackle.  Not the most brilliant maneuver, but his goal was to keep him away from his companion.

"Awww crap."

He felt it coming, the pommel of Heath's sword crashing down onto his back.  Yup.  Bad move.  A chunk of health gone, the Whisper folded himself in half and pressed a boot hard against his enemy's groin, pushing hard to clear some distance without risking another attack.

"OOOOWwwww.  You F-"

A black gloved smack to the head interrupted the man's retort.

"Language!"  Freyd taunted, a hearty chuckle in his voice despite having taken a hit.

"Just a flesh wound," he added, sparing a wink for his blonde ally.  "Why don't you try that again?  Call the last one a Mulligan.  I'm sure it will go better this time around."

"Right," Morningstar chuckled, "it was just bad luck last time."

Twirling his sword, he rushed at Heath. Their blades met but this time, Morningstar pushed harder and knocked him off balance. He stumbled for a moment and an opening appeared. The sword art he activated glowed green rather than his usual gold. In an arc, he slashed across Heath's chest and a multitude of enhancement effects took hold of him.

"I-I-I'M BURNING!"

Cerberus Soul had clearly done the trick, panic overtaking the old officer. It would not last long, he knew, but it would stick around for a little bit. At the very least, it was a nuisance for Heath, who was now more focused on his health bar, slowly ticking away. Morningstar stretched out his back, watching the man squirm. Admittedly, he did not act as expected. He was used to NPCs of his status and demeanor being more... intimidating. Heath was nothing of the sort.

"That went much better, I think," Morningstar grinned, motioning for Freyd to take a turn.

Freyd was focused entirely on the man's wild flailing and panicked cries. This was an officer of the imperial guard - among the most fearsome fighters ever fielded by Ladonia's vile and now deceased autocrat.  He felt no joy or satisfaction in defeating him.  This wasn't a win in some sporting contest, though to many of his fellows it could be seen as such.  A lighting quick strike to the wrist jarred and opened his hand, the Whisper deftly snatching and tossing the weapon behind him where it stabbed itself into an aged and filthy couch once plush and vivid in its royal purple.  Like everything else around here, it had fallen from grace.  Fallen.

Boot stomped on boot.  Hand twisted and clenched to neck.  Freyd had him by the throat and peddling desperately to keep his toes on the ground as he drove him back against the wall.  The keening return as hands unleashed the void once more.

"I'm sorry, Heath."  The words spoken barely to the threshold of the audible, he struck right at the navel.  His hand passed through flesh, devouring it, pulling each mote free from the mob' avatar mesh with its passage and consigning them to oblivion.  Within seconds, the mob was gone, an awkward little system jingle ringing in the air to signal their completion of the jungle.  Freyd was still staring at the ground where the last of the motes twinkled out of existing, flexing his hand repeatedly like he was working out a cramp.

"Good recovery, my friend," he finally said, his head returning to the moment.  "You know your tactics and your tools.  I'm sure you'll do just fine when the raid begins."

Heath disappeared, leaving the two alone again.

"Thank you." With a chuckle, he returned the compliment. "You're pretty good yourself. Guess that's what years on the front lines does to a guy."

Meteor returned to its scabbard on Morningstar's waist. Finishing off the captain ended their raid; there was no door leading to a fourth room and no more Ladonians to slay. He looked at Freyd. Up until the final fight, Morningstar had not noticed anything off about him. For a second, during his final strike against their opponent, he thought he had seen a spark of conflict in the man's eyes.

"Hey," Morningstar crossed his arms, "not sure if you have any fight left in you, but I was thinking about running down to Floor Fourteen for a quick field boss. Assuming we're wrapping things up here, of course. Want to join me?"

To be honest, the idea had not crossed his mind before that very second. He had never any intention of doing a field boss run before then and the floor he had picked was mostly random, albeit he knew that the item it dropped was useful. He liked Freyd's company and thought it smart to get to know the one who would soon be his raid teammate. They could chat on the way to Stonewall.

"Years on the... how old do you think I am?!"  Freyd leaned away from his companion, giving him a false stink-eye diffused by a disarming smile.  "I've actually only been in the last two raids.  I suppose that counts as being a veteran, at least by some standards.  There are others who have been around a lot longer than me."

His left brow arched even higher as Morningstar made his pitch about the fourteenth floor.

"I actually need to swat the Lich King to gather some Darkness Salve for the raid.  It would be helpful to get a second dose, if you don't mind me buying yours off you?  The tanks might need it for added durability."  Considering the man's performance against the Ladonians, Freyd was pleased to have him signed up on his team.  "I might also have some old weapons and armor to suit your skills laying around, if your interested."  Scanning through a translucent database that instantly appeared at his request, he mumbled something to himself about Shock Trooper Armor and Field Plate of the Rose.

"Looks like I exhausted my supply of tier four weapons a while back, probably for the last raid, and I won't likely have time to find..." He sized Morningstar up again.  "We might get lucky."

Chattering to himself as he went, Freyd led them through the City streets and back to the central portal plaza before muttering "Floor Fourteen" and stepping through.  Found conversing with his own shadow on the other side, the two nodded in agreement with each other before he added something about 'the Lich King being at spawn point three today.'

"I dunno," Morningstar shrugged, "mid forties?"

A chuckle followed. He was surprised that Freyd was a newer addition to the front lines. His level was higher than many of the others he had met and he sure fought like a veteran. He was happy to hear the man's interest in accompanying him to the Fourteenth. "Sure, you can have my share. No need to pay me for it; consider it a donation to the raid party."

The Darkness Salve was a great item but gave little advantage to the blonde, considering the damage reduction it cost to use. The tanks would receive more value from it than he.

"If you've got anything ya don't need, I wouldn't complain," Morningstar smiled. "I've got some drops to take a look at back at my shop though, so no pressure."

He followed Freyd and teleported with him, the hunt for the Lich King beginning as soon as they touched ground on Floor Fourteen. "So, is that kind of your thing? Running around, taking down old war criminals?" He unequipped the grey cloak. It felt unnecessary to continue so inconspicuously; they were only looking for a field boss. "You seemed to have some history with that NPC—Heath, right?"

"I don't mean to push boundaries," he added, "was just curious."

"You're an appraiser... that's right.  I nearly forgot."  A quick mental scan of his inventory recalls that most of his straight swords and heavy armor had already been put to use for the last raid, but not replenished.  "Sorry, but I don't have anything that will fit your kit.  If anything turns up before the raid, I'll be sure to let you know."  Freyd already had his thinking face on, drumming up ideas and opportunities for Morningstar's benefit.  The problem was time.  It was always time.

"Heath?  He's just one of a number of bit-time players who sought power in the aftermath of Razwell's fall.  Honestly?  I think he and the rest of the 'loyalists' are just mini-bosses from a Ladonian event that Cardinal never got around to implementing.  His story is more compelling than most: choosing to fire on all civilian vessels in the aerial battle that led to Razwell's defeat.  It was a move born out of desperation, and a cowardly one at that. No players died, that I know about, but a whole lot of innocent NPCs did.  I was there.  Call this my personal vendetta to avenge them, if you wish."

---

Striding into the Lich King's lair, Freyd felt the oppressive sensation of the system asserting its tierlock effect.  "I really hate that mechanic," he griped aloud, though it eased the pain around his hands due to Samael's Pride's reduced potency.  Who would complain about having their hands eaten less?  As they approached the dais, the mob rose as if to give some grandiose monologue.  Freyd just shushed him.

"Sorry, yes, we're in a bit of a hurry."  Not even bothering to let the villain finish his one and only moment, he brought his fist down onto the decrepit dude's face, plowing him through in own throne.  Only then did the Whisper realize his mistake, his joints locking up as the side effect of the Troll's Blood elixir kicked in.  Within seconds, he was fixed in place.

Fuck.  Wore the wrong trinket.

The Lich King was an intimidating foe, dressed in villainous armor and wielding a giant of a weapon. Freyd was a funny fellow, confusing the king by skipping his dialogue and cutting straight to the combat.

Freyd's body froze like a statue, seizing up from whatever elixir he had consumed. It took Morningstar a moment to realize what had happened but when he did, he charged forwards. The Lich King climbed back on to his feet and swung furiously at the paralyzed swordsman.

Coming to his aid, Morningstar cut through the Lich King, stopping him before his blade could reach his partner. Meteor shone brilliantly as it ripped through steel and bone, returning the monster to nothingness. He exhaled, realizing he had been holding his breath. The fight went quicker than expected (all thanks to him, of course).

He took a seat in what remained of the Lich King's throne and smirked at Freyd. He waggled the Darkness Salve in front of the stunned man, chuckling. "If you can grab this from me, its all yours."

baaa785c388968bd18bd7f4a737ec471.jpg.2e93af81ce4653f812e1fe75f0abd5e8.jpgFreyd didn't react.  He couldn't.  But if he could, he would have laughed at Morningstar's upcoming misfortune.  Just because he couldn't move, didn't mean he was out of options, and his companion had just baited the one card that he might still have at his disposal.  From beneath his clothes,  something inky black and formless bled and darted towards this dangled prize.  Persi did love chasing shiny things, and this might prove a valuable lesson for Morningstar as well: don't mess with Freyd's spoopy shadow mongoose.  All he would see was a roiling mass of slinky black that wrapped itself around the vial in his hands, a pair of large blue slotted eyes suddenly staring into his, followed by a strange and curious sniffing sound.

"Persi!"  Freyd's movement finally started to return.  "He's a friend.  Leave him be."  The eyes turned and looked at their master even as her shadowy forms dwindled and compressed into that of a small black mammal.  The eyes were still a bit creepy, but it seemed far less threatening than at first.

"Sorry," Freyd added.  "Meet Persistence, my familiar.  She can be a little overprotective of her property."  He clearly meant himself.  "Shiny baubles and things that clink have also proven troublesome."  A soft whistle and snap of his fingers was all it took to recall her, Persi's form losing its third dimension once more to slink back inside his jacket.

Stretching his arms and neck to restore their functions faster, Freyd cursed himself under his breath.  "Serves me right for not bringing the right gear.  Thanks for finishing off the Lich when you did.  You saved me a few good whacks to the face, I'm sure.  Troll's blood can be great for damage output, but you need to manage its paralytic side effects.  I should have been better prepared."

The shadow emerged from Freyd's jacket and Morningstar flinched as it rushed at him. At first, he thought that it was another monster or some after effect of the Lich King's death. When it twirled around the elixir instead of killing him, he realized that he was probably fine.

Freyd called out to the strange creature by name and confirmed Morningstar's suspicion by introducing her as his familiar. He laughed as Persi returned to her hiding place. "Scared me for a second there," he said, standing from the throne and moving for the exit. "It's no problem," he added, "you'd've done the same for me."

"Thanks for today," Morningstar stopped, "it was a good trial run. I'll see you at the raid."

He took his last teleport crystal from his inventory and activated it, returning to Stonewall. Somewhere along their journey, afternoon had turned to evening. Morningstar whipped open his messages and typed one out to a friend. It was time to prepare for the boss fight.
