[F13;PP] The Four Coconuts | <<Cleansing the Corruption>>

Recommended Posts

Things had become more lively as of late for Nari, and she found herself once more diving into the rush of experiences as she focused on making headway once more. Even as she'd awoken to the morning light - Mio screaming into the void of sunlight for the food that the small kitsune constantly wanted as soon as Nari was awake and alert enough to hear the yowling - she had risen and completed her morning routine. She knew that much of it was wasted - things like toiletries were unnecessary in this world, but she found that the actual process of following through with them somehow made things more bearable.

Her morning routine completed, Nari had taken a look over her questlines, focusing on those still noted as incomplete. Her finger hovered over one, the epitome of the four horsemen the defining factor in it's appearance, and she found herself biting her lip as she considered the possibilities. She knew that alone, she could never hope to complete the questline - and as much as she may have wanted to argue it, she knew she'd need help. Sighing, she brought up her messaging system, quickly typing out a message in the hopes that someone would answer her call.

To: @All Players
From: @Nari-Lanreth

This message is being broadcasted to everyone, in the hopes that someone sees it and shows...well, some interest.

I'm looking into beginning the Cleanse the Corruption questline, and while it's tempting to run it alone, I...kinda like being alive. So yeah, if anyone's around...ping me back?

Hoping to hear from someone;

Nari<>

She sent the message before she could second guess her action, hearing the confirmation ping even as the box before her disappeared. Sighing, she glanced down at Mio, the kitsune staring up at her expectantly as it waited for her to speak. "Well, now we wait and see...and hope that someone is still alive and interested..."

A blinding yellow ball whizzed through the air, bouncing once as it came in contact with the acrylic floor. With a hard whack, Morningstar sent it back over the low net, where it bounced once more. The game was at its close. He crossed the baseline, preparing for an easy volley. The ball came once more and he lunged forwards, knocking it up before it could touch the ground. It was a good shot; however, the return was better. It tumbled gently towards him and Morningstar found it difficult to tell where it would land. He stepped left and stretched to the corner, his racket barely connecting with the ball. With luck, he hadn't lost the point.

On the opposite side, Willow plotted against him. Her victory was imminent. She retrieved his weak hit, sending the ball to the opposite end of the course, forcing him to work to remain in the game. He returned her forehand with some effort. She reused the same attack twice more, gradually tiring him out until finally, she saw her moment. The ball tumbled through the air, the highest it hand since the initial serve. He had hit the ball too hard and she could see in his eyes that he knew. With a short jump, she smashed the ball into his end of the court. It bounced once. He dove frivolously, missing the ball by at least a foot. It bounced a second time, outside of the court. He had lost.

Thankfully, it was only tennis. He rolled over, in minimal pain despite his choice dive, and wiped the sweat from his forehead twice (because once wasn't enough). Willow stepped over the net. She reached out her hand. Helping him up was the least she could do, considering she'd gloat about her quickly augmenting win rate until boredom overtook her. That, or he finally won a match.

"Good game," she said cheerfully. He took hold of her hand and pulled himself from what felt like his grave. Morningstar thought she looked awfully put together for someone who had just spent the last ninety minutes running back and forth across the court. He was almost jealous.

"If you had like, one less leg, I would have won that," he joked. He tried his best to lose with grace. They turned, laughing, towards his house but were interrupted by the ping of an incoming message. It was strange, they thought, that both of them had received it. They stopped, taking the moment to read it over, before she closed her menu and continued walking.

"Coming?" Willow asked, noticing that he had not followed.

"Hold on a sec," he mumbled, reading the message once more.

She moved closer to him. "Someone you know?"

"Yeah. A friend. Says she needs a hand. Feel like coming along?"

Willow shook her head. "I'm beat, honestly. Otherwise, I would."

"You sure?" Morningstar asked. "You could really, really use the friends."

She cut him off with laughter and a playful shove before he could continue. "I'm taking a shower. I'll stick around and make sure you don't get robbed."

"Be back soon."

"You'd better."

The thirteenth floor had never looked worse. It was often described as an apocalyptic wasteland and Morningstar thought that was fitting. The environment was dark and dreary, not to mention every mob he had ever encountered seemed to have a disease of some capacity. But, at least there was Angel's Point.

He left the teleportation arch feeling immediately uneasy. He knew that the citizens remaining in the city were relatively friendly people. Unfortunately, they did not make up much of the floor's inhabitants. It took him little time to find Nari, who he had replied to with a brief "give me a few minutes to teleport up."

"Evening," he said, still dressed in his tennis clothes.

Meanwhile, Freyd casually sat casually in a third-hand lawn chair cobbled together from stray bits of refuse and detritus strewn about the sludge fields just beyond the Liminal Blind.  Awkwardly functional, yet tastefully macabre, the egregious bit of furniture looked like Frankenstein had taken up carpentry, but used his own parts.  Relying mostly on congealed zombie drool as an adhesive, bits of bone, tattered clothing, and fleshy hides whose origins were best left unconsidered, it was perfectly suited to its environs.  This was floor thirteen, or the undead-invested, miasmic wasteland that remained of it.  Freyd called it 'home.'

Currently clinging to a steaming cup of vanilla-scented coffee to ward of the local scents, he'd spent most of the morning rousing Dingo and setting the boy to task cleaning his 'shop.'  The aptly named 'Freyd Edges' was nestled in the ruins of some forgotten monastery on the outskirts of Angel's Point, blending in so splendidly with the local state of disrepair that one might easily overlook it.  That was the whole point.  Why else would he have set up shop in such a desolate landscape few dared to visit and the local trash bandits were distinguished by their particular colour of plague?  But the blissful days of languishing in a pristine modernist dungeon better categorized as a bond villain's wet dream were soon coming to an end.  He was a taken man, and his life was changing.  No one would ever have believed it was possible, most notably including himself.  Still, it felt good.

In his right hand he held a ghostly green effigy of a flower in bloom - The Shadowed Rose.  Kasumi has crafted the masterpiece he now spun slowly, pondering the undeniable influence its namesake had over him.  It had all happened so gradually that Freyd barely realized it.  Yet, closing his eyes brought back a dozen vivid memories triggering varied senses, all of them bring joy, connection and... warmth.  It was nearly time to leave this place behind and begin a new adventure, with her.

Surveying the destitute scenery and decay, it was hard to claim that he'd ever truly miss any of it.  But it had still been a home of his own making - his own fortress of solitude, finally breached and no longer necessary.  Bringing his cup into reach of his lips, fate notoriously intervened.

"I swear that the universe knows when I aim to relax and conspires against it."

Persi was simultaneously sprawled and nestled in the gap between his torso and the arm of the chair, twitching occasionally as she mauled some poor field boss in her dreams.  Nari's message popped up, to be read over the rim of an undeniable need for extra caffeine.

"Hrm..."

Setting the cup down on a nearby crate of expended emergency supplies, Persi sniffed and peered through heavily slitted eyes, drawn by the swirling wisps of steam drifting over her.

"What do you say, Persi?  Should we go clean up the yard one last time before we leave?"

Minutes later, the two were at the appointed destination, Persi already trailing a shower of orange fractal shards from 'playing' with the local wildlife on the walk over.

"Someone said something about a janitorial suicide mission?"  There was a lilting sarcastic laughter behind the words.  "Count me in!"

The rituals of everyday life were unnecessary here in this virtual world. You didn't need to shower, to brush your teeth, or wash your clothes. These simple tasks were mundane when you could just automate everything in game windows with the touch of a few buttons. However, the act of going through these motions helped Katoka feel more grounded. To make this world feel like it was more of a home than the prison that held them all in. So in the mornings she would shower. She would brush her teeth and hair, put on fresh clothing, cook a simple breakfast, clean her house, and even perform simple maintenance on her weapon. If she was going to keep an ounce of sanity in this floating castle in the sky, she would do it by routine and a stubborn will.

After one such morning routine the small blonde received a message notification. Checking the contents she arched a brow, from what she knew of the 13th floor it was a nasty place all together. Though she had never tried the quest mentioned, if Nari was reaching out for assistance then she knew it was something that would prove to be difficult. After a quick once over of her gear she left her home and walked the all too familiar route to the teleport gate.

***

"Oh ew." the samurai couldn't keep the note of disgust from her voice once she had set foot on floor 13. The rotting corruption that grew about the floor was something she was not accustomed to, especially the smell. Her nose wrinkled and her footsteps were hurried in an attempt to reach the appointed destination as quickly as possible. Kat's face spread into a smile when the members of her party came into view. She was familiar enough with Nari and Star that she gave them both a quick bow in greeting and an apology for being the last to arrive. Her smile grew wider as she elbowed Freyd playfully, "Trying to make me look bad by actually showing up on time?"

She was confident enough in her own abilities, especially after the success of her first floor raid, but there was something about being in the company of others that she trusted that let her shoulders loose that last bit of tension that she didn't realize was there. "Well gang, are we taking down some bronies today?"

The responses had come quickly, albeit in limitation. Still, Nari was pleased to see that there was at least someone else out there - and from the looks of it, a few someone else's - who were still interested in tackling the horrors and challenges that Cardinal designed for them. Her movements had been quickly following the confirmations, a collection of goods and materials that could be useful, before collecting Mio and making her way out towards the teleportation pad and the thirteenth floor.

Her arrival was mere moments before the others - and although she may have looked collected and calm, she found within herself only a collection of anxiety and concern, a worry about what they were about to walk into. She smiled at the arrival of the others, their commentary light and airy, a sign that each of them was ready to attend and face whatever the four horsemen of doom and gloom had wanted to bring forwards. She found herself giggling slightly to herself as the comradery between Katoka and Freyd made an appearance, and she passed a few words of greeting towards Morningstar; her head tilting in a nod to Freyd in a welcoming, if a bit reserved, manner.

"Well, not sure how much you three know about this quest, but Miraak seems to want to send us to face the Four Horsemen of Doom and Gloom, in order to attempt to get them to clear the lands of corruption. Which..." She paused and looked at the area around them, her hand twitching in restraint to keep her from waving at the area. "...I would argue likely isn't super successful, unless no one has ever run this quest before...to begin with though, we should head over and find Miraak. He's supposed to be somewhere nearby."

She waited only long enough to see if anyone had any commentary or questions before turning in the direction of Miraak's waiting point - a nearby church that had become entirely inaccessible to the player base, and seemed to be some sort of memorial ground for the NPC itself. The walk was short, and Nari found herself passing minor comments between the trio of others, her mood light and airy regardless of the internal feelings that she kept to herself.

Miraak was to be found exactly where the broker had informed Nari he would be, and she was quick to engage the NPC, listening as he explained his story in a somewhat restrained manner. Before she could truly become bored with the conversation, it was already closing, the NPC's final words reaching the ears of those listening. "I do not know what comes next, but only a combined effort by all four Horsemen can cleanse these lands, and finally bring an end to this nightmare."

Nari turned to the others, shaking her head slightly. "Not foreboding at all...so, Daemon's End was it...? Ah...before we go...if anyone's interested in some buffs I've got a few items..."

She opened up her menu, spinning it to show the others the collection of goodies that she'd stored away in preparation for events such as this, uncertain of what exactly would be necessary, and yet knowing that it would be beneficial to offer them up in case anyone found a need to them. "Feel free to grab anything you might be interested in - free of charge, of course."

Morningstar was unsurprised to see Freyd join them. It was almost expected that wherever he went, Freyd would be there too. A part of him wondered if there were other players left in the game at all. Or, perhaps there was a strange spiritual connection that bound the two, persuading them to always arrive at the same places at the same times. He returned Katoka's greeting. She, unlike Freyd, was a surprise. The fraction of his past raid team together again was a pleasant sight indeed.

A painful string of dialogue gradually led them to their impossible quest of cleaning up the wasteland that was the thirteenth floor. He whispered to Freyd while Miraak addressed them. "Might be time to try their luck on a new floor. Y'know, in an "Interstellar" kinda way."

Miraak finished his speech, perfectly unaware of Morningstar's comments. With a wave, Star opened his inventory and tapped away. Tennis clothes were replaced by a heavy set of armor that was far too scary for someone with his personality. He thought it was cool, though, and the unique enhancement it carried gave him reason to wear it around.

"Demon's End. Sounds pleasant," Morningstar said dryly. "I'm all buffed up but thanks for the offer. Any thoughts and/or previous experience with the horsemen? My first time doing this quest." He finished up with his items, his sword materializing at his waist. "How should we choose opponents? Draw straws? Pick favorites? I'm all for Death."

"The horseman, I mean. Not literally," he clarified.

"Trying to make me look bad by actually showing up on time?"

"Why would I bother?  Your fancy new getup must take hours to put together." Freyd's instantaneous retort to his guild mate was accompanied with widespread teasing grin to match his backward compliment.  The 'Cerulean Storm,' as he'd once dubbed her, had certainly grown into her own.  His manner left no doubts about his pride in her accomplishments.  "Besides, I needed time to find my fish repellant."

Returning Nari's nod respectfully, it hadn't surprised him in the slightest to see the invite come from her.  The woman was fearless, and possibly self-destructive, but their recent adventures together had proven most intriguing.  'She'd make a fine addition to Firm Anima,' he thought to himself, acknowledging that he'd never asked her whether she had already joined a guild.

"I completed this ordeal once, a while back, and before the whole Flood of Shadows affair."  His eyes darted quickly to Katoka, worried that mere mention of it might trigger some resurgent trauma.  "It's been buggy ever since, or so I've heard. We don't get much player traffic in Angel's Point, period, these days.  As odd as it sounds, this quest used to be a big draw.  Not so much, anymore.  The outcome does improve conditions across the floor, for a time, but everything gradually dissolves back into the current state of decrepit sludge.  Kinda sad, really."  Looking wistful, Freyd led them towards the next step in the quest, taking care that everyone had what they needed before they left.

"I think they've tried, but the reset button is so gunked up with zombie slime that they can't get it to work," he added, snickering at Morningstar's suggestion to wipe the floor clean and start over.

They'd reached Miraak at the cathedral by the time he'd finished relaying his experiences, Freyd's eyes glazing over as the priest droned on about his sordid tale.  "I'm still convinced that Cardinal has some sort of major CPU node or backup memory bank concealed in this thing," he mused towards Morningstar while they listened.  "Even after a year's effort, I've yet to find a way to get inside.  There must be a dungeon key somewhere that will do it."

Chomping down on his own snacks as they listened, Freyd offered his gugnir's feast while Nari laid out her own larder on offer.

"Well gang, are we taking down some bronies today?"

"Sure!  I came all this way, after all."  Kat would know that his house was literally down the street.  "Can we rebrand a bit and just admit that we're all heading to 'Daemon's Butt', instead?  I find it really helps to lighten the mood and set a better tone for the rest of the quest."  Grinning madly, Freyd led them the rest of the way.  Chuckling at Morningstar's volunteering for demise and equally prompt withdrawal. Freyd offered his own two cents on strategy, slipping back into tank mode from the last raid.  Maybe it was because all of them had been there and knew the importance of discipline in these things.

"Morning would match up well against and benefit from defeating Death.  Katoka might best be paired against Pestilence, given his DoTs and her single target specialty.  I'd suggest Nari take on Famine to help buff her  potential damage output against the Monstrosities.  That leaves War for me, which is probably wise, since the extra attacks he can grant can suck up energy like Katoka on Sam's ti...OOF."

His friend's elbow had found its familiar mark in his ribs.

"I swear if you attract fish on the rotten floor I will leave you behind." the samurai chided, remembering all the aquatic instances of ridiculousness.

Kat nodded as Morning relayed his lack of experience with this quest. She too had not tried to take on the horsemen after finding out how girthy their health pools were, not to mention the multiple fights that would take place afterwards. She was not looking forward to the slog fest in their future.

The blonde tried not to show any sort of reaction to Freyd mentioning the storm of shadows, however one of her eyes did twitch ever so slightly. "I guess we will have to see how things go huh? Though with Freyd's luck, I wouldn't be surprised at any glitches showing up. Cardinal loves to throw things his way." This remark was just as much a jab at her making fun of him, as well as her way of letting him know that she would be ready regardless.

Katoka made note of Freyd's strategy, making sure to pay attention to the seasoned player's words of wisdom. Though when he mentioned her and what she assumed as Sam, the samurai quickly cut him off with a well placed elbow. This time was a little harder than usual, the pop-up for anti harassment flashing for a moment as she walked passed the Whisper with a look of satisfaction on her face. "Demon's Rectum right?" she called back to the party.

There was a lightness to their air as the party walked towards what had become known as Demon's Rectum. Nari hadn't been able to contain the laughter that erupted from her at the juvenile joke, having to turn away from the group for a few moments as they continued onwards. She'd caught the conversation, but found herself incapable of providing any serious input, stifling the laughter taking the majority of her concentration. As she turned back around, the small spats over, and Freyd rubbing his side from something that had occurred when Nari hadn't been looking, she found herself shooting a lingering grin towards Freyd.

"I hope you're not suggesting I face Famine due to some underlying comment about my weight." Beaming a smile that was as much filled with humorous intent as small warning, Nari turned to glance over the others, nodding to each of them as she made her way with the group. They were strong, capable fighters. She'd seen each of them on the frontlines in the last major boss battle, and she knew that she couldn't be in a better group of individuals - and yet, there was a worrisome note over the entire party, as if they were headed towards uncertain areas.

Demon's Rectum was, perhaps once, a large settlement that had housed a variety of people that could've been considered interesting. Now, however, it was a barren wasteland that had fallen to the corruption of the floor just like most other corners of it. Squelching undergrowth gave way beneath her feet, and Nari found herself moving more carefully in a determination not to fall flat before the group. "Lovely place. I can see why this was tourist destination of the century not too long ago. I'm shocked that people stopped coming here, truly."

Whether her joke fell flat or not, Nari would never know. As she entered the core of the area, she spotted four mounted figures, standing as if waiting for their arrival. The collection of beasts - red, black, white and pale - seemed to paw at the ground impatiently, their riders sitting above them in an almost regal manner. Nari gave no hesitation, straightening herself and pulling up shield and spear, raising the weapon in her left in an odd salute even as she called out. "Hail, Famine! Corruptor of that which is consumed, one who consumes all! I challenge you. Face me if you dare, or fall before might forewarn!"

Morningstar giggled at Nari's comment regarding the newly dubbed "Demon's Rectum" being the tourist attraction of old. "I was thinking of selling my house and buying something here. Cheap real estate, I'd imagine."

He looked around, grimacing. "It might need a little renovating, though."

They entered the arena. Four figures sat upon steeds of different appearance. It was easy to tell which of the horsemen was which. "Here's to the apocalypse," Morningstar said. Nari confronted her opponent first. Famine, she had chosen. Very well, he decided. It was his turn. He stepped up to Death. It was fitting, he thought, considering the name he had chosen for himself. He drew his sword, his gaze high. He was met with the cold, dead stare of a pale visage. Death's scythe was long enough to meet the ground, despite him sitting atop a horse. A crow rested upon it symbolically. "O' Death," Morningstar declared, "I challenge you."

Donning his usual, maddening grin seemed to be the best retort to Katoka's jibes, not to mention the most effective way to bolster her spirits against any doubts or second guessing.  "Don't worry," he added.  "You're gonna have a halibut time."

Hands raised in defense and proclaiming innocence, he daren't mock or challenge Nari's claims.  Besides, he knew her to be among the most capable tanks currently serving in the front lines.  Making wise cracks about your tank's waistline was a great way to wonder why your hate values were suddenly awry in the middle of a boss fight.  Freyd was far too pragmatic for such risks... probably.

"You know, that was precisely what I thought when I originally set up shop in Angel's Point," he replied, regarding Morningstar's musings on speculative real estate in a plague market.  "As to renovating, isn't that why we're here?  Now, let's get to work."

Each of his companions moved to stand against their respective horseman, pairing off as had been recommended.  His advice and encouragement given, he'd done what he could.  The rest was in their individual, capable hands.

The hulking armored figure on the crispy mare with serious burning scalp issues was to be his.  He was the most twitchy of the bunch, as if Cardinal itself was struggling to manage the big boi's insurmountable rage issues.

"Hey, Bob!  Good to see you again.  Looks like you put on a little weight.  Might want to get off your high horse once in a while."  His grin spread a little wider, hoping that Nari had heard.  "Nice wheels, by the way.  I'm looking forward to test driving them after we do the thing.  Marquess of Queensbury rules, this time around?  Game on!"

  • 2 weeks later...

Nari's quip about her weight made her snort before turning to Freyd, "How insensitive could you be?" She shook her head, attempting to act disappointed, her grin betraying her tone.

Katoka turned to the four enemies that stood before them, her eyes rested on Pestilence astride his horse. She grimaced at the sight of him, the living incarnate of disease and sickness. Every fiber of her being wanted her to leave and vomit at the same time, not something she would have bee too keen on doing simultaneously. She noted that her opponent carried a bow, meaning she would be better off fighting as close as she possibly could to the rider. With a deep breath she pushed down her anxiety and attempted to get her nausea under control, the time for spewing the contents of her stomach could come later.

"Alright you living boil, I guess it will just be you and me huh?" she glanced above his head and took not of his health bar. "You chuckle fucks better give me a hand when you finish with your boyfriends. This guy has so much damn HP."

With those final word the samurai settled into a comfortable stance, her hand resting on the hilt of her katana ready to draw in the blink of an eye. "Let the games begin."

A soft wisp of breath left Nari's lips before she moved forwards in earnest to engage with the mounted feature before her. The thing seemed to shift it's attention towards her the moment she had called out, as if locking onto the player and target in response to the challenge. A quick glance thrown towards the others confirmed that they had moved forwards to confront their own foe, and Nari found herself shifting slightly away, pulling the rider towards the edge of the conflict zone in order to give herself some space and movement area, without hampering or being hampered by the other combatants.

Like a hound on a trail, the rider seemed to follow her movements, shifting it's steed and moving towards Nari at a leisurely pace that the knightess figured wouldn't last forever. She carefully kept her shield ahead of her, the spear leveled in a manner designed to allow her to lash out suddenly in response to any charges that the figure might attempt. Her feet gliding across the floor in a manner that led her in a tight circle, bringing her slowly closer and closer to the steed and rider, before she found herself within range of being able to stab outwards and hit the rider.

Almost immediately, everything flashed into a flurry of movement, and Nari found herself ducking and swaying in attempts to dodge the assault of the rider, while reacting with attacks of her own. She quickly lost herself to the movements, her body flowing in response in a way that seemed unnaturally responsive considering the heavy armour she wore; a battle dance designed to balance defence alongside dextrous counter attacks.

The crow atop the horseman's scythe cawed, as if acknowledging Morningstar's challenge, and flew away. Death loomed over the swordsman, staring hideously. The duel began in an instant. Both parties acted quickly; Death swept low with his scythe and Morningstar leaped backwards, creating space between them. He led his opponent away from the group, determined to end the fight on his own.

Running was of little use. There was no hope of out speeding Death while it remained upon its steed. Morningstar spun, blocking another swing of the scythe with the edge of his sword. The scythe's blade wrapped around Morningstar's body but was unsuccessful at completing its full sweep. They grappled with each other, each side desperately looking for their kill. Death reeled back, allowing Morningstar little time to breathe before striking again.

He hurdled the oncoming swath, dashing forwards on its way back and catching Death with a well-timed stab.

"Y'know," Morningstar said, stepping out of the way of the stunned horseman's scythe, "I think I'd like you better in a suit."

Stabbing the open palm of its steaming gauntleted hand into the smokey air, war grasped at the swirling smoke of detritus and debris that served as its retinue as it faced off against the irreverent Whisper.  Clenching the ashen air, the rider conjured a blade of pure blackness and forced the cinders in the congealing smoke to alight with the power hatred and rage within itself.  It was the very embodiment of carnage and fury, astride its red wrath and ready to unleash countless untold atrocities upon the poor fool standing dumbly a hundred feet in the distance.  Baleful laughter echoed within the thick plate armor encasing its form, resounding like an artillery barrage rising to cacophonous crescendo.  Raising the sword over its head, a flash of lightning struck at the tip sending sparks raining down over its imposing form.  One might be forgiven for wondering how such a massive steel-clad creature could even be borne by the steed beneath it, yet wrath seemed as uncaring as it was ready to be unleashed.  Flames spewing from the crimson nightmare's mouth as it bucked and pull against its bridle.  Only the rider's will kept it in check, even then only barely.

Freyd, meanwhile, stuffed his hands in his pockets.  The most ignoble insult he could imagine by which to insult his eager and belligerent foe even further was to utterly dismiss his pomp and douse his ego with a cold shoulder.  So, he looked bored, tapping at a random cobble from the ruined street beneath his feet and tilting his cowl as he shuffled it around like an improvised hockey puck.  When thunder crackled in the wake of War's calling, the Whisper raised an open hand towards his enemy, lowering all but a single finger - possibly urging it to wait.  No.  That would have been a different finger.

A deep, unsettling rumble of a gathering storm reverberated from within the rider's armor.  Lowering its weapon towards its target, War raised its thick, plated legs to dig its spurs into Wrath's haunches and decimate this impertinent little...

*tink* *tink* *tink*

Something had tapped its left shin guard, effectively ruining the moment.  Confused, the mob looked down to find a second and much closer Whisper standing inches away on its flank.

"Hey.  Miraak says 'hi!'"  Instantly, Freyd drove Samael's flaring pride upward and straight into the underside of the hulking knight's jaw.  Gravity pulsed at the impact, which would have launched him airborne were he not actually strapped to his mount and weighed down by an Abrams' battle tank worth of steel plate.  The buckles holding the saddle were less resilient, snapping loose and swiveling the armored figure comically clockwise to pivot head-first into the ground.

The shadowy, distant Freyd gave them both a thumbs up before winking out of existence.  The opening salvo was a hit.

"Don't believe your own hype, Bob," Freyd muttered aloud, rolling his eyes as War's legs flailed helplessly, pointed straight up into the air.  "War ain't all it's cracked up to be."

The sounds of battle erupted around them all, bits of rock and dirt flying in every which way, the clangs and smashes of weapons ringing in Katoka's ears. She watched as her opponent adjusted he adjusted the grip on his bow. A bead of sweat ran down the side of her face in anticipation, when it reached her chin and dripped off there was an explosion of sound and earth where she was standing. Pestilence had, in a fraction of a second, drawn and loosed an arrow at her. However when the dust settled the only thing that remained was a crater and a few crackles of electricity.

The samurai was now standing five feet to the right of where she had originally been standing, her body sending off tendrils of energy as if she was a rolling storm that had blown into town. She grinned, "Better luck next time pal."

The ground once again erupted where she stood, but she was still faster. Streaking back and forth as the diseased archer attempted to hit her with his strikes, the Cerulean Storm laughed as she skid to a stop in front of the mounted knight. "Hanami, lend me your fangs!" she yelled as she swung her katana, the hidden tattoo on her right arm shining with a blue light and sending a surge of energy up and into her blade. Her strike cutting deep into the flesh of Pestilence's leg and causing him to pause in place ever so still, his actions paralyzed by her hit.

Flecks of the creature's tainted blood landed on Kat, causing her skin to sizzle from whatever was flowing through his veins. She hissed in pain as she attempted to wipe it from herself.

Like a true conflict of war between the four horsemen, the chaos of fighting erupted suddenly. The mounted riders moved to engage with the players as the four of them strode into the arena in earnest, and blades swung through the air in a deadly attempted to embrace their target. Nari could hear the general commotion of the others around her, but she refused to let it become a distraction. Her initial strike had sliced into the form of the horseman before her, rendering it immobile for a few seconds as the stun effect coursed through it. She knew better than to press the advantage however, one too many previous situations having taught her the benefit of patience over offense.

Instead, she fell back and settled behind her shield, waiting for the horseman to begin moving once more. Her feet moved in a natural arc as she danced around the horse's form, dodging the stabs and slashes that attempted to connect with her and bring her momentum to a fault. Her eyes never left the form of Famine, keeping the thing in her sights at all times. She knew she had to trust the others, trust in their ability to maintain their ground against their own opponents - at least until she was done here, or they had come to her. "Alright, let's do this then...come at me, and see if you can't get passed this shield. You move like you've been hit by a famine though...so maybe I'll just keep dancing around you - the benefit of eating properly, by the way, is having energy."

He attacked from the left, before the horseman could break free from its paralysis. With his blade enveloped in a red glow, he struck Death one final time. Steel cut through steel. Death's scythe fell to the dry grass with a thud, and upon Doom's back he crumbled to black dust, mixing with the breeze, defeated.

The other fights waged on. Freyd fought War. Nari fought Famine. Katoka fought Pestilence. The riderless horse approached Morningstar, sniffing at him while he watched his comrades battle away. It startled him. Pieces of skeleton were visible where flesh was missing. Green mist poured out where hair should have been, as well as from its hooves. Its eyes were the same colour and appeared hollow. It bumped Morningstar with its muzzle.

He lifted a hand to pet the steed. It whinnied and knelt, as if to show Morningstar that he was worthy of becoming its rider for the oncoming fight. Doom would have to wait, however, while he assisted his friends (and interrupted their duels).

"I have heard it said, Bob, that war can turn lives upside down, but I wasn't really expecting you to demonstrate it quite so literally."

Flailing like the heaviest pinata imaginable, here hung what should have been one of the most imposing mobs of the game.  War looked positively laughable, flopping around like a turtle on its back, his massive sword hissing and steaming as it lay on the ground a few feet away and out of reach.  Raging with boundless fury, the mob couldn't even reach the saddle straps that somehow miraculously kept him attached to his horse.  The mounts itself had lost most of its furor, sniffing around in a futile search for hellgrass, or whatever a beast of this type might prefer to graze.

"Now, the sporting thing to do would be to cut you down and make this a fair fight, wouldn't?  War has rules, after all?  Don'tcha Bob?"  Inverting himself had peeled open War's metal skirt plates from the  rest of the knight's carapace, making it look like some sort of mechanical flower had bloomed to reveal a stubby pair of thick legs and embarrassingly oversize cod piece.  Freyd flicked with with his fingers, producing an obnoxiously loud and resoundingly hollow clank.  "Ooof.  No worries, bud.  We'll keep this strictly between us.  But, unfortunately, I'm not very good at following rules, which I suppose fits in well with all of your unwritten ones."  Air quotes were added for emphasis.

Driving his knee hard into the figure's face plate swiveled him back like the flap on a pet door.  When the pendulum action reversed its direction, Freyd matched his initial strike with a solid blow from his fist paired with the screeching keen of oblivion's hunger.  Samael's Pride flared in its notoriously apt manner, driving its way through War's helm as if it were a hot iron piercing cotton candy.  Wrath's load suddenly became a lot lighter, as the rest of its rider melted into motes and spilling to a wide, glowing pile all around it.  The horse had found its grazing ground after all.

"You deal with that," Freyd pointed at the ground, running his hand along the thing's mane.  "I'm gonna go help some buddies and then we can finish this thing together.  Sound good?" Wrath whinnied playfully, eager to have found an oddly kindred spirit.

"Nice job, Morning," he shouted across the field.  "Go help Kat.  I've got Nari."

  • 2 weeks later...

The battle raging around the samurai was enough to almost distract her. She knew that she needed to stay focused on her own opponent, but hearing the sound of two of the other enemies being killed was enough to put a smile on her face. "Oh good, the cavalry will be here shortly, but for now let's continue our little dance."

More arrows cut through the air at impossible speeds, the blonde managing to keep ahead of the projectiles as she traversed the battlefield. Despite the helmet setting atop the mounted archer's head, Katoka could tell he was getting frustrated. His shots becoming more erratic and much easier to dodge. A trail of red light seemed to follow the small blonde, reminiscent of a light cycle in Tron; the high pitched whine of her charging sword art ringing from her blade.

Coming to stop once again in front of Pestilence, Kat slid and swung her katana in a heavy arc. The sound of thunder rumbled overhead, however lightning did not strike this time. The samurai clicked her tongue in frustration, not pleased that her strike did not land how she wished. Her eyes shot up to meet the tip of a drawn bow right in front of her face, a hit from this close would surly kill her. Her body reacting on pure instinct cause her to lean back, throwing her arms up in a defensive position as time seemed to slow down. She watched the arrow as it was loosed from the rider's hand, following it's trajectory as it seemed to float through the air between them. It only managed to graze her forearm, but the force of the attack sent her spinning off nearly like a top.

Katoka felt the blight that seeped into her wound almost instantly. When she managed to regain her footing and dodge another attack that exploded next to her she looked at her left arm to see the cut in her arm pulse a sickly black. "Shit, that was a little too close for comfort." she snarled, looking up and over to her companions, "Watch out for the arrows, they're coated in something nasty!"
