The other two's warning was all she needed to confirm an ever growing concern within herself. She nodded to Morningstar in response to his question, as well as towards Katoka's own commentary. Whatever elation at the ease of the quest that had built within her, had just as quickly dropped away. Something about Freyd's movements screamed of the dangers to be found in wild animals. Dangerous, wild animals. She was glad he was on their side, for the moment, but the concern in Katoka's voice, as well as the very essence that was Freyd in the moment, spoke to greater concerns for her. 

"For the time being we should put down these...things. Once they're down, we can try and...focus on that. Give him a breadth of space, just enough that we can rush to his aid if the necessity arises. Not that I expect it to..." Her words drifted off as she surveyed the battlefield once more. Pairs upon pairs had continued to rush out towards them, a never ending stream that made her question just how difficult this quest was as they dropped in succession. "Whatever you do...don't give them any quarters. Make sure that each of you is within range to rush to another's defence. We may be powerful, but we're not immortal. Remember that!"

She called out even as she rushed back into the wade of conflict, her spear stabbing outwards over and over again as it looked for weak points and flesh. The horse beneath her pawed the ground in anticipation, it's hooves scratching across dirt and cobble alike in a showy glow of spark and strike. She had no doubts that they would be through this horde soon enough, but she wasn't entirely sure whether that would bring everything to a closure, or if there were more concerns to be had.

Kat's succession of "no's" worried Morningstar about as much as Freyd's erratic, silent movements. He almost called out to his friend, but saw it pointless and focused on doing what he could to help his party instead. He reined his horse left, swerving out of the way from the incoming Faceless Lord and charged at the Blighted Monstrosity on the opposite end of the battlefield. Despite never wielding a scythe, he twirled it effortlessly, as if it were made for him, and sliced the mob across its chest. It sunk to the ground in a pile of dark, muddy goo and disappeared like the rest.

He counted eight down and scanned the nearby environment for the final spawn point. All he could see was the Monstrosity that his party had previously engaged with. Rather than play a guessing game with Cardinal, he executively chose to regroup with the others, steering Doom back in their direction.

Vestigial awareness of self lingered still in the ravenous form of the Faceless Lord of War as he brutally carved a path from one foe to the next, his companions legitimately worried by his cold, calculating and unrelenting progress across the battlefield.  Freyd was no longer himself; perhaps not even any longer in control of his own actions as he propelled himself from one monstrosity to the next.  The others wisely steered clear and away from his direct line of sight, the edges of his cowl serving as fortunate blinders to keep him focused on the foolish enemies that kept spawning before him, only to promptly shatter into a thousand segregated fragments.  

As the last of the Blight's guardians rose to block his path, the impulse to destroy overwhelming any hint of other thoughts or actions.  Unleashing a distinctly inhuman cry that chilled both heart and bones alike, Freyd charged. Samael's Pride lanced into the vomitous creature, obliterating most of its left side, whatever that meant for an amorphous blob devoid of facing.  But the others saw what he could not: a sacrificial play accepting the blow for the sake of infesting its attacker's mount and severing their empowering connection.  Wrath whinnied and writhed, but flailing efforts failed to deter the Blight guardian's efforts to consume it, and possible its rider as well.

Sweat was forming on Katoka's brow. The fight was not particularly strenuous in any way to her, it was Freyd that was causing her to worry. It was not surprising that with their borrowed power they were tearing through the mobs as quickly as they spawned in, but she still felt the hairs on the back her neck stand up each time a new one appeared. Her friend was ruthless, seemingly consumed by the thirst for battle. "We need to end this as soon as possible." she muttered to herself.

Her attention was pulled to the final monstrosity. Kat had been waiting for another to appear after Freyd had dispatched the last and was almost taken off guard when one remained. It was finally time to wrap up this conflict with a nice bow. She smirk slightly at the thought as she pulled back on her weapon, loosing what she hoped was the final arrow. It thankfully struck true with an earth shattering crash, sending dirt and stone flying in every direction and obscuring their view.

Once the dust settled she clicked her tongue in frustration. The monstrosity had survived, albeit with it's health bar hanging in the red. "Damnit. Nari! Star! You're up!"

A singular creature remained, one which stood between them and the completion of the quest. Normally, Nari would hold her ground, waiting for another to strike out and take down their final opponent. But something in the crazed haze that had taken over the battlefield changed her, forcing her forwards as she rushed to beat the others in the final strike. Maybe it was the desire to end this, to figure out what was going on with Freyd, or perhaps it simply was the apocolyptic environment itself taking sway over her. 

"I've got this one!" She called even as she urged the horse beneath her forwards. She wanted nothing more than to turn and leave, to move on from the chaos that surrounded them and the depair that it brought, but instead she charged ahead and brought her spear up in preparation. It was easy enough to see her target, but a whole other point of contention to strike it. Carefully, she timed her movements, lashing out with the speartip just as she began to reach the thing's side. She laughed as she felt the spear pierce the thing, causing it to shatter into thousands of shards, and leaving the field clear of the creatures for the first time in many minutes. "Ha! That's done...now what?"

The earth quaked and heavens shook as the last of the Blightbound Monstrosities met its end. A black mass shifted and grew, beating like an enlarged heart. It skulked across the dead grass, consuming everything in its path. Morningstar was closest to the Blight. He hadn't the chance to move before its gelatinous form had crept past him, trapping him and Doom. The undead horse's attempts at freeing itself were in vain; the Blight was like glue, or quicksand, or The Blob (1958). Nothing could escape its hold.

His HUD updated with a new quest directive: "Activate Armageddon." Simultaneously, Death's scythe began to glow. With such a vague command, Morningstar was left unsure of what to do. The Blight had risen to the horse's knees and would reach its upper thighs soon enough. The blonde's legs were raised onto the horses back. He balanced uncomfortably, focused intently on the void below him. Doom made sounds of fear and anguish as the Blight rose higher and higher. With few options to choose from, Morningstar sunk his scythe into the ocean of Blight.

Nothing happened for a moment. Then, high above them, a piece of the shadowy sky turned as green as the glow of the scythe. A single coconut fell from the clouds.

Even as the last of The Blight's guardians fell, Freyd felt its hunger seeping through the vile infection tainting his Wrath.  The mount stumbled, losing its footing and sinking to its knees.  Meanwhile, a sea of sickening black resembling used motor oil mixed with Metamucil and black printer's ink rose to lap at them from below.  Screeching in protest, his cries hoarse and alien, it was its very similarity to a keening banshee's wail that somehow pierced the Whisper's addled, murderous haze.  Samael's Pride made that same sound when it devoured, unleashing the infinite, consuming hunger of oblivion as its wards receded.  He'd heard that sound countless times, each one matching the weapon's passing through digital flesh, disintegrating everything it touched and desperate to do the very same to its wielder.

It had morphed through so many forms in its time, yet once again clung to its original guise as the sword held in his trembling hands.  Flexing his fingers recalled the constant pain of void eating away at his hands.  It was a terrible price to pay, yet... it made him feel alive.  An instant of lucid thought was all it took, the blade flashing down with fury and severing his own foundering mount's neck.  Wrath's head tumbled into the pudding of black death swelling all around them.  A flicker of green overhead granted a brief respite and relief.  He was himself again.

"That was too close," he coughed, voice croaking like he'd just tried to swallow his own tongue.  "I am never... can never... let myself claim that power again."  Something dark and sinister smiled at him through his own shadow, even as it faded, black on black, into the murkiness of foul rising abyss.  Katoka, close enough to have heard his words, saw something she had never seen in her friend's eyes before: fear.

The sword in his hands dissolved, flaking away and reasserting its previous form as a set of inky black wraps around his hands, like holes in space slunk around slender, spider-like fingers, somehow ever willing to pay the necessary toll.

"Fuck..." Freyd spat, still trying to keep from toppling over in the aftermath of the fading transformation.  Black bile oozed from his eyes, nose, ears and mouth, as if The Blight's tainted call was summoning something from inside him.  Clenching a fist, he drove it hard into the rising tide of darkness, a distant clarion call matching the emanating ripple washing out from his point of impact. 

In the background, someone had left a massive, wooden, hastily constructed rabbit, which promptly creaked and tumbled face first into the swamp, making an oddly distinctive noise.

Aaaaaarrrrrrggghh... *crunch*

The sound of sizzling flesh began to rise from the horse Katoka rode upon. Hunks of meat began to slide off and drip to the ground as if they were made of candle wax. Wrinkling her nose, Kat looked over at her companions. She felt a sigh of relief escape her as she saw Freyd seemingly returning to normal, though she felt her skin prickle at the sound of his fear. She rarely knew him to be scared whatsoever, and this unsettled her greatly.

The samurai realized that she was slowly sinking from her high position. Looking down in a panic she watched as the rest of her mount sank into the ground beneath her, slowly lowering her onto her feet. The gravel softly crunched under her as she now stood once again on her own two feet. The bow that she had slowly become adjusted to began to glow with a bright light, causing her to squint and look away as it dissolved in her hand and left her grasping at nothing.

"Holy shit, did we finish? Are we--" her voice trailed off as the the shadowy form of a massive bird seemed to take flight and soar overhead. "Was that... An African swallow?"

A singular second was all they were given to enjoy their victory over the blightbound creatures that had swarmed them. A singular second, before the mass of goo began to appear, to rise and swallow everything around it. It moved slowly, and yet somehow seemed to immediately surround and consume whatever was in it's path, as if it's movement, speed and appearance were little more than an illusion.

Nari found herself reeling back from it at first, trying to direct her horse away from it, back onto hard land where it couldn't reach them. It was futile, of course. An effort that would account for nothing as she glanced about looking for any form of safety. Her eyes passed over Morningstar as the figure thrust his scythe into the ooze, as if trying to attack it and drive it back. Freyd, seemingly having returned to normality, suddenly lashed out and struck down the mount beneath him. Katoka cowered backwards, watching in disappointment - or at least Nari assumed it was disappointment - as the bow in her hand disappeared from sight in a small flash. 

She glanced at her own weapon, seeing as it had begun to glow softly as well. Holding it up towards the sky, she pointed it towards the clouds that had begun to condense and cover the skies above them, as if working to blot out any light that might have touched the ground. Gritting her teeth, the words came quietly, and she found herself grimacing as she said them. "First, thou shalt remove thyself from this cloud. Then, I shalt count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number that I shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be three. Four shalt I not count, nor either count two, excepting that I proceed to three. Five is right out, entirely. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, you shall disappear and return not to this land!"

A sudden beam of light seemed to erupt from the four bodies of the once-horsemen, piercing into the clouds and seemingly driving into the centre of the black, condencing mass. Nari couldn't sworn she heard a cry from within, as if a being behind them had called out in pain or discomfort, before they seemed to shift away, as if running from the group. 

Confused, uncertain as to what had just occurred, she turned to look at the others, her eyes searching each of their faces for some sort of answer. While they may not have been as confused as she was, it was clear they held nothing for her, and she found herself instead saying the first thing that came to mind. "Well...that was weird. At least we only suffered a flesh wound?"
