[PP-F1] Reawakening. <<The First Lesson>>

Recommended Posts

The quest log updated, the time to search was over. Before long, however, another tremor shook the land. Kylissia drew her sword and stuck it into the ground for stability. She only pulled the weapon out once the tremor had ended.

She then noticed that the other girls were investigating a possible source of the tremor, a tower that wasn't there before. Kylissia rushed over, but Miryu was already climbing the tower. Almina seemed to be wary enough to avoid climbing it for the time being. When Miryu reached the top, Kylissia kept her eye looking towards Miryu's HP bar in the party list on her HUD, hoping it wouldn't drop. Thankfully, it didn't. When Miryu walked up to the tower's edge, a cloth in hand, Kylissia figured out what she was up to. She waved her arms to try and get her attention, as well as prepare to reach. "Over here! I'll catch you!" She called out. Miryu leaped, and Kylissia found herself missing Miryu by an inch, for her position was an inch too high for Kylissia to grab.

Miryu stumbled into the river, but at least she was able to avoid death by fall damage. Now it was time to return to Tolbana.

The earthquake caught Wulfrin off guard. The tower however was more jarring. In all his many trips to this location, he had either not noticed it or more likely it was triggered by Miryu's odd player data. Wulfrin was even more caught off guard by the announcement that their quest logs had updated. By his count none of them should have met the requirements yet, so it was either bugged out or a new update had just retroactively progressed them in the quest. Neither option was farfetched, a fully automated system capable of editing and updating itself to maintain balance for the game is fully capable of freaking out or updating player progress in real time. Wulfrin just wished it had happened when he went through the quest.

Wulfrin watched with bated breath as Miryu leapt from the tower holding nothing more than a piece of cloth. It was very adventure game style, akin to that of another game Wulfrin had played once, but couldn't quite place it at the time. He was too focused on calculating his action in the event that Miryu started to crash land. He had enough HP he could probably absorb most of the impact, but it would be close. Luckily he didn't have to test out the theory.

"Well," Wulfrin dusted his hands after dismissing his fishing rod. "Either the system has decided to update the questline or it's hella bugged at the moment. I'll stick with you for a bit longer once we get to Tolbana, if that's alright with the lot of ya. The next lesson should be combat, but at this point I have no idea what is in store for us."

"Glad to see you're safe Miryu," He sighed turning his attention to the odd player. "Though if I might make a suggestion. Try not to go jumping off towers like that anymore. At least not unless you have something a bit more reliable than a sheet of cloth. Wouldn't want your name to appear on the Monument of Life with the words fell from a great height."

Miryu looked to Wulfrin as he addressed her, in regards to the little moment with the tower where she tumbled into the river. Miryu had tried her best, truly, she did. Her response was an unusual one, however.
She gently lifted her right hand, and brought her index finger over to Wulfrin's nose, placing it upon the tip. Then, she slowly began to apply pressure as to lightly push.
Strangest thing about this was, she didn't even know why she was doing this, she just felt like it. It's not like there was any harm, right?

Well, it was time to return to Tolbana and continue the quest. Wulfrin, as he'd stated, would escort the three over to Tolbana and over to Zachariah's. Miryu would reveal the three materials she'd gathered, and the NPC nodded with approval and a soft smile. "Dorian needs to collect a debt, and sent us over to you." Miryu stated. Zachariah let out a soft chuckle. "Leave it to Dorian to forget something so important. And before you ask, no, I'm afraid it wasn't me that borrowed the col. You might try Lyle, the blacksmith. I've seen him talking with the mayor frequently the past month or so, and he's just up the road." He answered. "I wish you luck!" He added, before returning to his work.

Miryu turned to look at the three players with her. "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go!"

Finding Lyle's shop was easy with Wulfrin's help, but the difficult part would end up being the interaction. Miryu was now a bit eager, so she entered first. The shop was dimly lit, and the sound of a hammer pounding against metal could be heard in all corners of the structure's interior.
The blacksmith was old, and seemed to be stern instead of gentle. Without even giving a glance, he'd state
"I'm busy,".
               Miryu blinked.
"So...should I wait or is there anything I can do to help-"
The blacksmith cut her off with a wave of his hand as he interrupted. "I don't do anything without payment. Now go and-"
The blacksmith stopped suddenly when he looked at Miryu. "...You again?" He asked. Miryu blinked. "Me?" She asked. The blacksmith nearly stomped his foot down. "Yes, you, who else do you think I'm talking to? You're...you're that girl from that Eirane's group, aren't you? You were the most capable of them so you'll have no trouble with this. Go deal with those pesky boarlets, bring them back whole or just their tusks, I don't care which. Do that, and then I'll hear you out." He responded. "Take these, you might need 'em. Bring back the weapon and any truffles you didn't use when you're done." He added as he tossed a wakizashi and a bag of tranquilizer truffles over to Miryu. He then, as the system required, addressed the two other girls in the room as well. "That goes for you two as well." He stated as he tossed a bag of truffles to each of them. "Now go, off with you, and don't come back until you're done!"
With that, the blacksmith returned to his work. Miryu would leave the building, bewildered and confused. "...What was that just now...?" She thought aloud as she approached Wulfrin.

Almina found it kind of strange when Miryu simply did a long boop in response to Wulfrin expressing his concern for her over what just happened.

The return trip didn't seem to have anything out of the ordinary, which was good for the party involved. Of course, as the conversation between Wulfrin and Zachariah that happened earlier had proved, Zachariah was not the borrower. He then suggested the players head over to Lyle's blacksmith, and wished the party luck.
Thanks to Wulfrin, getting there was easy. The hard part turned out to be...the socially unmovable object that was Lyle. It was uncertain if he was about to dismiss the players once again, but what ended up happening was he seemed to have recognition of Miryu. He even seemed to remember her, unlike Zachariah, though he didn't seem to recall Miryu's username, if the omission of it meant anything.
Lyle then proceeded to just, quite literally, throw a task, as well as bags of sedative truffles, to the three girls present, and then just send them off with a dismissive wave, telling them not to come back until they were done.

Almina had a wide-eyed, yet otherwise blank expression on her face. She didn't know what to think. She didn't know what to say. She was only able to ask... "Wulfrin...is Lyle normally that...dismissive and abrasive?"

Kylissia struggled to keep herself from chuckling when Miryu's response to Wulfrin's concern was to place her finger on his nose and slowly push. "Cute..." She thought. Miryu seemed to forget to acknowledge Wulfrin's concern properly, but regardless, the time to return had come. "I suppose we should get going." Kylissia remarked while failing to suppress a smile.

Kylissia kept her eyes open for any threats along the way back, but monster activity seemed to be slow as of the current moment. Had the tremor scared them off, or has something, or someone, been hunting here recently? Either way, the path seemed to be clear for the time being.

When the players returned, the three girls made a beeline to Zachariah's shop to report their findings. Zachariah appeared to wonder why Almina wasn't able to find more than just one, He approved Kylissia's findings, and he was pleased with Miryu's entirely successful results. Miryu would then state her reason for coming here in the first place. As expected, Zachariah was not the borrower. He then suspected Lyle and sent the party on their way.
Upon reaching Lyle's blacksmith shop, Miryu hastily entered, then Almina and Kylissia would follow. Lyle turned out to be abrasive, dismissing the players upon their arrival. For whatever reason, he seemed to recognize Miryu, but this time it wasn't a faint recollection that turned out to be nothing. He didn't refer to her by her username, but he did drop another name: Eirane. Lyle then foisted the next objective in the quest upon the three, handing them each a bag of truffles, and loaning Miryu a weapon better than her current one.

Miryu and Almina seemed bewildered, which made fair sense, as it all happened so fast. "Lyle won't speak to us until we bring back boarlets or their tusks. Do you happen to know any good places to find them? Kylissia asked Wulfrin. "Also...Lyle dropped a name in association to Miryu here, he seemed to recognize her." She added. "Something about a group, potentially led by someone named Eirane. Does that ring any bells?" She asked, wondering if anyone knew something that might be able to jog Miryu's lost memory.

Wulfrin watched the conversation unfold before him when they entered Zachariah's establishment. He was thoroughly surprised that they weren't being required to craft up a potion like he did, likely part of the odd quest update that happened midway through. The conversation was a pleasant, yet familiar one. As Wulfrin had witnessed before, Zach was in fact not the borrower and suggested the group check out Lyle. He wasn't thrilled to be going back to the grouchy blacksmith, but the quest required them to do so. The trip there Wulfrin found himself lost in thought.

This day just keep s getting stranger. His eyes slowly passed over every head in Tolbana as they walked across town. I'll have to stay on my toes. No telling what or when we may get ambushed by some other surprise.

The familiar sounds of steel being worked filled his ears as they approached Lyle's business. It didn't take long for Lyle to start in on the newcomers just as he had Wulfrin. Wulfrin eavesdropped on the conversation, not wanting to even enter the establishment proper. He and Lyle weren't exactly on the best of terms. He did mention something about Miryu being a part of another group. Never met an Eirane. She's either a relatively new player or one that only comes out around boss raid time. Neither of which are very favorable for getting answers.

"Wulfrin...is Lyle normally that...dismissive and abrasive?"

"Huh?" Wulfrin snapped back to reality and processed the question with the speed of a dial up connection. "Oh, Lyle! Yeah unfortunately he isn't exactly the most welcoming patron to have, but a quest is a quest. I'm just grateful the actual smithing profession quest doesn't go through him."

"So," Wulfrin changed the conversation to include the group as they walked towards the gates once again. "When I did this quest I had to fight and kill like five boars. How much as this one changed?"

“Oh right your question,” Wulfrin face palmed, his ADHD making it take a nano second to realize he was asked a question. “Boarlettes I know. There is a hunting ground for them not far from the river. Let me go last so I can pull the agro. As for the other player name, I haven’t heard of them. Too be fair I don’t know very many people. My friends list is rather short actually.”

Wulfrin would answer the questions that Almina and Kylissia had. seemed like this was just how it was going to be. On top of that, the name remained a name. No clue who it was as of the moment. Wulfrin did know, however, a place to seek out the boarlets in.

Along the path to the location, Miryu stopped, as her eyes met that figure from earlier the moment she looked to the side. She turned to look at the others and tugged at Kylissia's arm, but upon looking back, the figure was gone again. Miryu blinked. "It was right there..." She thought aloud. "I...I could've sworn it was right there..." That shield and morningstar, the armor, the tusks poking out from the helm, the claws and hooves, it was the very creature she'd seen earlier. Was it merely milling around and lurking about, or was Miryu just seeing things?

The sound of squealing could be heard once the players arrived at the quest locale. Miryu drew her blade and ran towards the source of the sound, almost as though she were acting from procedural memory. A group of small boars squealed at her angrily the moment they entered her field of vision. Miryu continued her pace, and the small boars grouped together as they charged for her. In the blink of an eye, Miryu was on the other side of the boarlets, and they were all covered in damage marks, squealing before they all shattered at once.

Wulfrin would explain what he knew, and the mystery name would remain a mystery. Along the way to the spawn location of the boarlets, Miryu stopped suddenly, turned and then tugged at Kylissia's arm, but then when she looked back, she stopped again, looking bewildered. This was the second time Miryu had seemed to notice something. Almina was starting to get worried.

Once the players had reached the location the target creatures spawned in, Miryu drew her blade and took action the moment she heard a noise, and when Almina rushed over to catch up, Miryu had dispatched a whole quartet of the target creatures. Those boars were so tiny! But...why? Moreover, why and how did Miryu handle the situation so swiftly? Other small boars were charging towards the area of conflict, so Almina made her way over to join the scrimmage. She unleashed a sword art of her own, taking down two of the small boars entering the fray. "Kylissia! There's more coming from the other flank!" She called out to her ally.

Kylissia nodded her head as Wulfrin explained what he knew. Perhaps the players should look into this Eirane character at some point, it may provide some clues about Miryu, so she could hopefully get back on her feet before anything truly dangerous occurred. For now, there was a quest that needed to be completed first, the NPCs may potentially know more about Miryu herself.

As the players were makign their way to the destination Wulfrin knew about, Miryu tugged at Kylissia's arm, but when both she and Miryu looked, there was nothing there. It was unsure if she'd actually seen anything, but at this rate, time might as well be running short. "We should be on guard." She suggested. "I don't think we'll be alone for long."

Once the players reached their destination, Miryu drew her blade and took action the moment she heard the sounds of boars...except they were awfully meek. Kylissia watched as Miryu struck down four boarlets in one fell swoop, while Almina dispatched two and asked Kylissia to cover Miryu's other flank. She took position and drew her blade, rushing towards the boarlets and corralling them towards the boarlets that survived Almina's attempt. Kylissia would then take advantage of the area now richer in tergets, and unleashed one of her sword arts. Two boarlets remained, both frightened and enraged. "They're not called boarlets because they're small..." Kylissia thought aloud. "They're called that because they're young." She observed. She was no longer wary of the quest targets, but of what might potentially follow...

Wulfrin was content to just watch the girls complete their tasks. He found a bit of entertainment watching their moves and making mental notes in the event they would ask him for advice, his inner teacher coming out a bit. Miryu, your attacks are all over the place. Try and center yourself. Power doesn't mean anything if you can't hit. Alminia, you're too rigid. The blade should feel like an extension of your own form. Lighten up a bit and visualize the strike you want to make. Kylissia, you are too loose. Utilize your heavy armor. Be the impenatrable wall. All of these critiques filled his mind until he saw something out of place for Floor 1 making its way towards the trio.

"Shit," Wulfrin said under his breath. He drew his sword and rushed into battle, the sickly blade of Blighted Fang shining with the light of a sword art. "Stay focused on the boars! Whatever you do, don't draw agro from this thing!"

Wulfrin was able to make out more details of the new challenger. It's form was a large build about a foot or two taller than he. It wore a horrific set of black iron plate armor that curled and spiked to sharp points. The armor itself appeared to have the faces of trapped souls screaming to be free. From under the horned helm, Wulfrin could make out a pair of nasty tusks. The Helldusk Spawn, as the name above its health bar suggested, readied a vicious looking morningstar and shield to intercept Wulfrin's attack. Wulfrin however used their size difference to his advantage, slipping his blade through a narrow opening in a wide upwards ark across the beast's body. It stummbled backwards, sickly veins pulsating from the remnants of Wulfrin's heavy blow.

"Don't know if this is what you were seeing Miryu!" Wulfrin shouted. "But it definitely doesn't belong on Floor 1!"

Once Miryu had taken care of the first four, Almina and Kylissia rushed in to deal with the boarlets that were charging in to avenge their siblings. Almina dispatched two, and so did Kylissia, leaving only two boarlets left from the litter. Miryu kept her stance, waiting to see if or how she should take action.

The sound of hefty footsteps she didn't recognize drew her attention. A beast with a cursor that, while appearing red to Wulfrin, would bear the color black for Miryu. Wulfrin called out for the trio to avoid drawing aggro from the monster, to focus on the quest targets instead. According to Miryu's HUD, it seemed that Miryu's part in this was already done. She simply had to wait for the other two to finish. The sight of the monster confused Miryu, for if this was what she saw, then she must have gotten some details wrong...it was somewhat shorter than what she saw, the armor seemed a bit more...active, to say the least...its flesh was too putrid, too. "It...doesn't look like what I saw." She thought aloud. "It looks similar, but I don't remember it looking...like that..."
Miryu blinked, confused and unsure. For now, she would take an evasive stance, ready to back away or dodge at a moment's notice.

[Miryu takes no action]

Almina blinked when Kylissia made her observation on the boars. "Wait, what??" She asked. "Did I just hear you correctly? Are you saying these boarlets are...like, child boars??"
Almina looked to her last target. It looked both enraged and terrified simultaneously. "That's...that's so sick, why is Kayaba making us do this??" She exclaimed. Almina was morally torn by this realization, but in the end, it was just a system, she had to remember that...
Almina's hands shook and she directed her weapon to the boarlet.
"I'm so sorry..." She began. She could see the fear in its eyes. "The best I can do is make this quick."
One swift slash and Almina's quest log was updated. All that was left was for Kylissia to deal with her last boarlet...not that she would dare watch after what she'd just learned.

Almina heard something from Wulfrin, and a terrifying sight awaited the players. "What in all of...what even is that thing??" She asked, worried over the cursor hanging over its head. It was too dark of a color for Almina to not become wary at the sight of it. It would not be a fight she could hope to win on her own. Kylissia asked Miryu if it was what she saw, and Miryu's words would claim...that this was not the creature she'd been seeing. She did say it was similar, so at least there was a fair idea of what it looked like.

Almina was hesitant to finish the job, but Kylissia couldn't blame the girl for that. The battle was disrupted by the appearance of another combatant on the opposing side, an armored beast with morningstar and shield in hand...or, rather, claws, by the looks of it. Wulfrin engaged the monster in battle and called out for the girls to keep their distance. Judging by its cursor color, it must have been a monster near...Yona's level, was it? She remembered a time when Yona arrived to kill the stronger monster that arrived when she and Sorun got caught in a fight. Levels weren't exactly displayed, but it was a fair guess at least. Wulfrin mentioned something about this creature potentially being what Miryu saw, and definitely not being from the first floor. Kylissia looked over to Miryu. "Miryu, is this the creature you saw?" She asked. Miryu would look at the monster...and state that while it looked similar, this was not the monster she saw.

Kylissia then looked to the last boarlet of the litter. She intended to make this quick. The boarlet charged at an impressive speed, the impact of its charge being nearly enough to stagger Kylissia, but after that it was wide open for retaliation. One simple *Swish!*, and it was gone. Another disruption would sound out into the air. A much more angered, deeper bellow of a squeal. Kylissia looked over to see, charging down from the slope, a large, enraged boar, squealing bloody murder as it was making its way towards the trio...alas, Kylissia and the others could not face this beast alone, judging by the color of the monster's cursor. "Figures...it must have been balanced to the strongest player in the party. We'll need Wulfrin's help for this." She presumed. "Both of you, with me. Now!" Kylissia called out to the other two as she sheathed her blade and grabbed their hands. "Wulfrin!" Kylissia called out to their more powerful companion as she made her way to pass him near his general direction. "I hope you have the beast's attention and can handle multiple foes, 'cause we've got company and we're bringing the party to you!" She revealed, as the new combatant was chasing after the trio to avenge its fallen offspring.

"At the moment?" Wulfrin strained against the Helldusk Spawn. "He seems pretty intent on killing me!"

Wulfrin exited the bladelock with the Helldusk Spawn and took a very brief moment to examine the situation. Okay. He thought to himself. The girls managed to trip some kind of hidden boss. This thing is here and being an absolute nuisance. And then there is my incredibly low stamina pool. I've got maybe two strikes left in me. I'll need to buy some time. Wulfrin's blade began to glow with the vibrant light of a sword art.

Once the mama boar was brought in range, he let his blade fly. The boar managed to avoid the strike, but the Helldusk Spawn was the recipient of yet another heavy blow. This attack wasn't enough to put it down though. That was partially Wulfrin's doing. His intent was to stun mama boar in the same swing, but you know what they say about good plans. Both mobs rushed Wulfrin at once. Wulfrin managed to knock the morningstar from the Hellsuak spawn off course, but the boar managed to land a strike on him. His HP bar took a small hit, but nothing unmanageable.

"Looks like I've got both their attentions," Wulfrin said. The Helldusk Spawn began to convulse before popping with a sickly green energy. "Scratch that. I've got her attention. Let me wear her down a bit before you jump back in."

Once Almina and Kylissia finished with their boarlets, a much greater, mightier boar came charging down, a burning vendetta in its eyes over having become childless. The girls had killed all ten in the litter, now the boarlets' mother had come to avenge them. Kylissia sheathed her weapon, then grabbed Miryu and Almina as she ran to try and lead the monster to Wulfrin, who was still battling with the false apparition.
Once the battlefield had been completely moved, The status ailment on the monster finished it off, leaving just the raging mother boar in the battle, but it had identified Wulfrin as the bigger threat and was keeping its eye on him now. Wulfrin also noticed this, and advised the girls to stay back. Miryu had her weapon out, but for now she just held position, waiting to see what would happen next, and if an opportunity to strike would arise.

With the last boarlet down, it was time to wait for Wulfrin to finish his foe off so the party could be on their way-

  "HHHGGRRREEEEEEEEEEEEGHHH!!"

Almina turned to see a huge, snarling beast of a boar, one far larger(but more toned than chunky) than the boar chonkernaut she battled alongside Aidan. It was coming down from a nearby hill towards the trio of girls, squealing wrathful bloody murder as it advanced towards the three. Ah, so this must have been the parent...whose litter the three had just slaughtered. Nice going, Almina. Play stupid games, play stupid prizes. Why'd Lyle give the three such a cruel task anyway?
Kylissia sheathed her weapon and grabbed the two other girls by the arms, hoping that leading the monster towards Wulfrin might give him an opportunity to pull the aggro away from the trio by being a bigger threat. Honestly, there wasn't much that could be done about it, not unless Wulfrin holds its attention.

Wulfrin confirmed that he had the monster's attention, hopefully he would be able to handle another monster his level on his own until he could keep both their attention. He managed to damage the initial monster that he was fighting, and also managed to grab the newcomer monster's attention, even if only for a bit. The status ailment Wulfrin inflicted on the first monster ended up finishing it off, leaving just this one last opponent for the party to face, once Wulfrin secures its attention.

Almina didn't seem to be ready for much other than flight, perhaps she was taking an evasive strategy for the time being as she waited for the opportunity. Kylissia drew her weapon, but would also stick to the defensive for the time being. Miryu, however, held her stance, her weapon ready, as though waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Perhaps this was procedural memory in play...how much battle has this girl seen? But if that were the case, what was with her being the same level as Kylissia and Almina? There were many mysteries to this girl, and the questions piled on more than answers were found.

"So we meet again Mama Boar," Wulfrin said with a playful tone in his voice. "There is no Freyd to take you out this time. It's just you and me."

With blinding speed and accuracy, Wulfrin's blade slammed into the boar's form. It few in the air for a bit before resorting to just writhing on the ground a few feet away from him. The mob was disoriented from the blow and seemed to be leaving itself completely open to attacks. Wulfrin stood over the beast ready to finish it off should it make any wrong moves.

"Alright ladies," Wulfrin said with a smirk. "Mother Boar here wont be making any moves for a hot second, so if you want to take a few swings be my guest. We'll make a game of it. First to kill it gets the drops. You only have until the stun wears off, and after that she's mine."

Miryu held position, when the time was right, she would strike.

Kylissia and Almina did nothing against the boar, as to not catch its attention. Wulfrin would deal some considerable damage to it, and the monster was too stunned to take any action. Wulfrin would then tell the trio that they were all good to go for a strike and see if any of them could finish it off, seeing that it was currently stunned from Wulfrin's attack. Miryu prepared a sword art, but Kylissia held out her arm to stop her. Miryu, confused, looked to Kylissia, who explained to the two pinkettes the reasoning behind her action, and why going in for an attack in this situation was a bad idea. Miryu would have her weapon at the ready, just in case...after all, there's always a chance... Being in a weakened state wasn't exactly good for Miryu right now, as she kept getting the urge to do something rather than nothing.

Almina, now in a safer situation, watched as the battle between man and monster unfurled. Wulfrin cut the monster's HP down by half, and stunned it as well. Almina was relieved to know that the fight was going smoothly so far. Wulfrin noted that this would be the trio's chance to get a hit in before Wulfrin could go for a finishing blow. Miryu would almost immediately ready a sword art, but Kylissia would hold out her arm and stop Miryu in her tracks. Kylissia would then go on to explain her reasons why she stopped her, why attacking this monster at this time was not a good idea. Perhaps she was right, maybe sticking to the defensive while still a level one might be a better play in the long run, it might be too early to go dancing with fate or flirting with lady luck at a time like this.
