[FL1-PP] Curious Beginnings <TFFL P1>

Recommended Posts

"The Phoenix is Solaris," Wulfrin said as his familiar took to the sky once again. "He's gotten a lot more friendly. Back when we met he was kind of a pompous jerk. He watched me, judging every move I made, while I fought for my literal life."

Wulfrin thought back to that day in the desert of Floor 5. Abdullah was still the only NPC Wulfrin had encountered that seemed to have some sort of memory algorithm. Even Zackariah, who until recently always asked Wulfrin how his search for Dorian's loan, seemed to no longer acknowledge him when he brought in newbies. That was likely due to the fact he had finally completed the chain, but that didn't help explain the Abdullah situation. Wulfrin cast his line back into the river before he continued.

"I didn't know I would meet him that day," Wulfrin reminisced to the others. "I'm a bit of an Ancient Greek nut. Long story short Apollo was said to park his sun chariot in a desert in Arabia at a cold water well. Every dawn, a phoenix would come and bathe then sing a beautiful melody. I essentially had to trek through the deserts of Floor 5 while being harassed by an NPC that loves holding grudges apparently."

The question about that fated day when this whole death game officially started fluttered into Wulfrin's mind thanks to Cardinal's handy sign language interpreter. He hadn't drifted back to that day in a long time. In fact he actively avoided thinking about it. He hadn't even stepped out of the Town of Beginnings before being forced back to the central plaza, where their captor announced their hopeless task of clearing all 100 floors of Aincrad. That was the moment he devolved into paranoia and locked himself away in the starting town. For two years he lived in fear, barely scraping by. Now he was soon to be wed and possibly not long after be conscripted to fight in the next boss raid.

"Since the announcement?" Wulfrin chuckled trying to shake the dreary thoughts from his mind. "Let's see. I spent two years scared to leave the safe zone. Then I met a man that apparated from the shadows and they helped me get my feet wet with the system. I opened up a forge on Floor 22. I am very close to becoming a married man, and on top of it all, I've been grinding like crazy since I've been told I might have to fight in the Boss Raid of Floor 28."

Feeling the tug at his line, Wulfrin pulled the catch ashore. Another universal crafting material to build his weapons and armor and some additional goodies to boot. Having retrieved his bundle of goodies, he began to prepare his hook for yet another round of fishing.

"That takes dedication." Adelyte chimed in to Wulfrin's journey through the desert in search of Solaris the phoenix. "But it looks like it was worth it in the end."  her eyes followed the bird as it circled in the air above them, its feathers looking like roaring flames as the sun's light hit them. "As for this one.." Adelyte would step a bit closer towards Nymoria and Musei, slowly and cautiously. Lowering herself down to a flat footed squat, hands on the knees, she would smile at the adorable creature, "Sounds almost like it was meant to be."

After admiring the weasel for a moment longer, she stood back up and turned her back towards them with a spot closer to the trees as her destination. "I actually had, have, a pet ferret back home. My home, that is. Musei reminded me of him. Maybe I could find another ferret to adopt when I take the quest, or maybe something bigger and more badass!" her arms extended out wide. "But I guess we will see."

Her eyes traced around the base of each tree as she continued her search for any sort of foliage that Zachariah could use for potions. As Nymoria's question entered her mind - like some memory calling to her - she froze. A slow exhale released from her nostrils as her shoulders sank. It really had been a long time since she had even thought about that day.

She started with a sigh, hoping that extra second would help her find the words she was looking for. "Not enough, apparently. I should have gotten out there with everyone else. Started leveling up, maybe join a guild. Who knows, maybe with one extra hand fighting on the frontlines, we could have been closer to ending this nightmare."

"Instead, I painted. And sketched, but mostly painted. Sold any extra pieces out on the streets to make a little extra money to afford an inn or some food. Not a glamorous life, I'll tell you that. But it was safe, and I survived." She made sure she was facing Nymoria as she spoke. "What about you? What have you been up to?"

She should've known that the question would be turned back upon her, but as the smile from the thought of Adelyte selling her artworks on the street faded, a dark expression flitted across her face. There was no anger behind it, if anything it could be more closely associated with a depressive state. It appeared for only a few seconds, before Nymoria's features turned to a plain, almost empty void of a smile. Her hands moved slowly, and a few errors were obvious in the motions of the signing, a telltale to her nervousness at answering the question. I spent...some time trying to come to terms with things. It took a while for...the darkness to dissipate. To make the bad things go away. But eventually I came out. To join everyone else. I only started fighting with others. But that went poor. Then I found this quest line, and things went a bit better. Now I have people, and a purpose. I give hope to others, maybe.

The words were odd, the façade upon her likely making them feel even more hollow. Turning her attention back to the grass around her, Nymoria pulled aside a few more bushes as she tried to collect herself. She wasn't entirely sure what to say, and for a few seconds she remained silent as she considered the possibilities. Eventually, she turned back to the others in an attempt to rekindle some sort of conversation, unaware if they had been conversing while she was turned away - but deaf to anything that they may have stated.

You mentioned fighting at the frontlines. So you want to help clear the floors? Both of you, right? There was less excitement in her motions and expression than when they had first arrived, but the sorrow that had hidden in the back of her eyes mere moments ago was gone, for the time being.

"Oddly enough," Wulfrin sighed as he cast his line once more into the river. "The frontlines have been more of an after thought for me lately. I've found myself trying to make the most of this world that was meant to be a prison. It was only a handful of days ago that I started to return to the power leveling scene. I feel more like I'm being drafted at this point, but on the other hand it's a necessary evil. After all, we are all most likely on some kind of biological timer."

Wulfrin found himself starting down the darker paths of their situation in the real world. He had thought about the situation on his own often when he first started into his initial leveling journey, but that had lessened over time. He found it best not to focus on the what ifs that came with the state of their physical bodies. Their bodies were in a much more fragile state. Either the game will kill them, or time would.

"So in short," Wulfrin continued as he reeled in another decent catch. "Yes the frontlines were a goal, but less so now. Do I want to get out of here? Sure I do, but I also don't want my life here to end."

Adelyte pondered for a moment on Nymoria's question. Then she took advantage of Wulfrin answering first so she could think about it even longer. All she had heard about were the frontlines - the best of the best putting their lives on the line to make sure they could one day see their friends and family again. Those players were always made out to be heroes, and the glory of it all sounded appealing. But.. did all that glory mean anything when their lives could be snuffed out in an instant? Sure, she was putting herself in danger any time she would step out from the city's gates, but at least she could find out information about the surrounding areas or quests she wanted to go on. These bosses were a complete mystery - as far as she was aware - and always the toughest thing to be faced on each floor. Was that dangerous life truly worth it?

"I'm.. actually not sure." she finally spoke as she walked in a small circle, arms clasped together under her breast as she gazed up at the parting clouds through the intertwining leaves. "You hear about the frontlines so much while sitting in taverns, or just walking the market stalls... it really makes you wonder if that's what we are meant to do. I feel like its been drilled into my skull for so long, that it's what I thought was meant for me." With a sharp inhale through her nostrils, she returned her crimson eyes to her companions with a shrug, "I guess time will tell. At the pace I'm finding these herbs, we will probably clear Floor 100 before I'm even level ten."

She realized she was letting a bit of her softer side show, no joking or sarcasm in her voice. Had it been that long since she's had an actual conversation with actual people?

Picking up a simple stone, she turned it over in her hand. Wet dirt running off its smooth surface, slick from the rain. With a gentle toss towards the river bed, she pushed herself up and moved to another location to continue her search. "You guys got any tips or tricks to finding these things? I've only got.. One."

The responses were, unsurprisingly, hesitantly positive in a sense. Although Nymoria noticed that Adelyte avoided giving a definite answer to the question, she sensed that the girl's hesitation showed her desire to avoid the frontlines - if only for the time being. Nymoria found herself nodding in response to the girl's description of the consistent information regarding the frontlines that they received, and the way in which is was almost forced upon them in a way. She couldn't help but smile as she considered her one advantage on that - being able to simply ignore all the conversation about it.

Yeah, I guess you're right. They do really push the frontlines. Both this game and the people in it, yes? It seems like everything is all about clearing the game. There's no time to simply enjoy things. She paused as she made sure the others were paying half attention to her ramblings, before her fingers moved again in intricate patterns, their flowing an obvious easy for Nymoria - a sign that she had become well-versed in their movements and rhythms. It's like we live only to go to the front and fight. People have forgotten everything else. What does that mean for when we get out?

She cocked her head to the left at Adelyte's question, and the singular stone that she had picked up. Shaking her head, Nymoria gave a wave towards her own empty area, sighing as she signed quickly before going back into a search for the desired materials. If you find one, let me know. You're having more success than I am.

"There isn't really a trick," Wulfrin chimed in at the question left out in the open. "This is the one quest that is a grueling slog. Well the fishing part of part 3 is rough, but not near as bad as this one. Unfortunately you're up to the whims of RNGeesus and there is only so much you can do to sway the odds into your favor."

Wulfrin was all to familiar with the struggle Adelyte was facing. He had been through the quest already, and in a way he didn't miss it. Unfortunately everyone danced with Cardinal's random number generator on a daily in some shape or form. The crafters use it to forge gear and the frontliners face monsters just about everyday. Even today, while not posing any immediate danger, Wulfrin was using the system's randomness while fishing. He heaved another fresh fish from the river and placed it in his inventory.

"There is good news though," Wulfrin chimed back in. "I have heard rumors that this whole questline might be getting streamlined soon. Whether or not it will come to pass? Who's to say. Doesn't help us out now, but it's good to know that the system is becoming more beginner friendly. Must be all the fresh players entering the fray."

That was.. an interesting thought. How would their cozy little stay in Aincrad change them all once their souls were finally returned to their bodies. Would it be for the better, or for worse? She pressed the heels of her hands into her temple, before raking her fingers through the hair that framed her face. Philosophical chats, existential dread, she didn't exactly schedule those for the day. So with an exhale through her nostrils, and a returned pep to her step, she brushed it off.

Both of her companions mentioned there being no real tricks to finding materials, maybe save for items that boosted your chances.. but she was fresh out of those. She would have to hope on the mercy of the game's chances. Lowering herself to her knees, she would clasp the palms of her hands together in prayer. "Oh RN-Cheezus, I worship thee. Please do not make me scream."  Giggling at her silly rhyme, she would open her eyes after her deep prayer session and check her surroundings once more.

"AHA!" she would exclaim, reaching out and plucking another bushel of herbs from the shore line. "Gotcha! Just three more now!"

Either the translation software in Cardinal had finally failed her, or Nymoria had watched a phrase form that was well beyond her understanding. Whatever the reasoning, she found herself stumped, staring at the teal-haired woman as she tried to piece together the meaning behind the apparent rhyme. After a moment, her fingers moving with an almost exaggerated slowness to them, Nymoria decided to simply ask.

What's...what's a cheese us? Her expression held a bizarre mixed of query, concern and outright confusion as she stared at Adelyte, waiting for some sort of explanation that would help clear up whatever had been said.

Even as she stared, her hands continued to move, pawing at the ground in an ever lasting attempt to find the materials that would continue to help her in her endeavours throughout Aincrad. Not that her luck thus far had proven to be any better than Adelyte's own.

A soft smile on her face, she gave a playful look towards the other two as she signed, her hands moving in exaggerated long, flowing movements to make the message clearer. It's a good thing cheese us likes Adelyte better than me, otherwise we'd be here forever.

Wulfrin laughed at Nym's very understandable confusion at the name of RNCheeseus. Wulfrin had suspected that they hadn't had much gaming experience before SAO, but this pretty much confirmed his suspicions. The slang terms were hard to get a grasp on, but once you got a chunk of them down, they would often lead to fantastic conversations not unlike this one.

"R-N- Cheesus is slang Nym," Wulfrin chuckled happily as he cast his line back into the river. "They're basically praying they get some decent rolls in the random number generator. In other words Adelyte just wants good luck, something we all hope to have in abundance in Aincrad."

Wulfrin watched his bobber intently. Unfortunately the tides of luck didn't seem to be in his favor either. He left the bobber floating lazily in the river for a good handful of minutes before recalling it, only to watch as a fish jumped up not long after he had retrieved the line. Cardinal was teasing him again today.

Oh well. Plenty of time to kill. Wulfrin began to reset his line for his next cast.

Adelyte snickered to herself as Nymoria's translation filtered into her head. Her little gremlin smirk softened to a more genuine smile as the giggles faded. "Sorry, Nym. Sometimes I just say whatever pops into my mind, don't always think before I talk." The girl walked with her fingers interlaced behind her back along the rocky shoreline, her long, azure hair swaying behind her with each step. "Usually its just jokes.. or inappropriate comments. Got me into plenty of trouble. But that's what made it fun." Turning her gaze to the gently flowing stream beside her, she would look out over it for a moment, before she was scrolling through her menus to unequip her footwear.

"Hm, not as cold as I thought it would be" she said to herself as water gently flowed past her ankles. "I'll stay over here so I don't scare the fish away, Wulfrin" she would call over. Wading her way through the water, looking for anything that caught her attention. Still not much luck with finding any materials, but it had turned out to be a nice day, so she couldn't complain.

"Have either of you fought any crazy baddies? Not that I'm at any level to even try to fight something. Just curious what kind of monsters are out there in a world this beautiful."

She was certain that the expression of confusion on her face must've been comical to the other two as they continued to explain the entire situation, and yet Nymoria found herself not quite understanding it. Wulfrin had explained it to be related to the rolls in a random number generator - she assumed this was something internally that Cardinal handled, as a backend system within the game - and yet nothing he made really made sense. She pictured a set of digital dice quickly rolling every time she did something, an image that appeared both off putting and comical at the same time. Shrugging it off, she decided to place it into the category of things not entirely understood, but exist as they are.

Careful Adelyte, you don't want to go and get yourself too wet. Although Wulfrin may enjoy that show. Her cheeks reddened slightly as she turned away from the other two, busying herself with her foraging as she hoped they wouldn't notice the reddening of her ears. Her eyes scanned the area as she considered what she had said, her mind racing in numerous different directions before it finally came to a sudden halt, all thoughts stopped as she glanced back at Adelyte. She gave a subtle shift of her hands, keeping them from Wulfrin's sight once she was certain that the teal haired woman was watching. Although if you want to dip in a little more, I won't complain.

"Trust me," Wulfrin said as he cast his line again. "The fish haven't been biting much today."

Wulfrin leaned back on the bank and looked up to the floor above. Adelyte's follow up question was one he had an answer to. The question is which one of his foes was the craziest. He couldn't settle on just one, but a combination of two enemies that he faced almost back to back.

"I've faced my fair share of monsters," Wulfrin said with a sigh as he looked up at the floor above. "The craziest was actually an unfortunate mixture that required me getting saved by a couple of frontliners. I was going through a questline called Scents of the Wild. The first fight of that quest is against a giant angry bear. Me and the frontline tank I was traveling with felled it pretty quick and decided we still had time in the day, so we would try and two man clear a dungeon. That turned out to be a bad idea. See dungeons level based off the player that opens them. I was significantly lower level than the tank was so the dungeon was based of her level. If it weren't for two players named Freyd and Morningstar, my head would probably look like that one guy from Scanners."

Lips curling into a smirk, she would bring her hands up behind her head and struck a pose. Looking in Nymoria and Wulfrin's direction with a playful wink, "Are you implying that I am quite the looker, Nym?" Her remarks entirely sarcastic and rhetorical - she knew she had the looks. Though, the potential hidden meaning behind Nymoria's silent comments passed right by her, and she simply took it as a compliment.

Her crimson orbs slowly scanned the water, not only looking for any materials for foraging, but for any fish that Wulfrin could be missing. With slow movements, she would step closer to the shoreline, being careful not to lift her feet out of the water and cause any further disturbances. "I can't say I know what Scanners is.. but probably best your head didn't end up in any other state than this." she gestured with her hand towards the man. "Its a good thing those other players came to your rescue though.. or else we wouldn't be here struggling to catch fish."

As she spoke, she began to reach into a bushel of weeds that grew up through the water and into the open air. Her hand sloshed around through the soggy leaves for anything of interest.. and the moment she felt something of a different consistency than the weeds, her hand closed around it. Slightly slimy, and.. moving? She pulled her hand out from the water and with it a small fish dangling from its rear fin. "Hah! Looks like I'm having better luck than you in the fish department! Guess this counts as a material, huh.. Maybe Zachariah can use it for something."

"Yeah it was very fortunate," He said as he watched the river with intent. "On the Scanners topic though, its a movie that I haven't seen in a while, but the scene I'm talking about was the first thing I thought about when the GM spoke about frying our noggins. Usually when I make a refrence like that, I'd pull up the clip, but it's A. quite a morbid considering our situation and B. I'm like 90% sure we cant access the external internet in games. It's a shame really I could really use a good movie right about now."

Wulfrin's bobber drifted on the rivers waves, being jostled by even the slightest movement of Adelyte wading through the river. When she simply reached into the water nonchalantly and picked up a fish with her bare hands, Wulfrin couldn't help but feel a bit of jealousy. He chuckled at the mention of Zackariah using the fish as a crafting material.

"I bet he could," Wulfrin said as he reset his line again, having failed yet again to catch anything. "Too be fair most of my materials came from fish, so most of my first wave of gear was made from fish."

Wulfrin looked back to check on Nym before turning his attention back to the river. "Also I don't blame Nym if she thinks you look good. I wont deny you do have the looks, but don't worry I'm not going to try and hit on you. I kind of already have some one else I'm talking to."

Drawn into herself following her initial commentary, Nymoria had missed the majority of the conversation going on between the two other players. She'd managed to resurface into the aspect of sociality just in time to catch Wulfrin's final commentary; commentary which caused her to redden slightly again as she suddenly realised that her attempt at hiding it from the man had gone completely without success. An odd sound that may have been an attempt at a sigh escaped her, before she turned back to her attempts at finding anything of value. A few seconds later, her hands moved in the typical motions of her speech, her eyes downcast as she refused to look at the other two players. Can we just...pretend that never happened?

Although her face remained downturn towards the ground below her, it was obvious to any who were watching that her eyes were focused on the other two, waiting to see what they would say. The slight tilt of her head, designed in such a way as to allow her to glance at their faces to see their responses, threw her hair over her face in a partial way; an appearance of an almost childish nature as she continued to attempt to both hide and watch all at the same time. The reddening of her ears, barely visible beneath the flowing hair on her head, would've only given away the embarrassment she was feeling to an even higher degree.

The fish flopped and flailed in the air by its tailfin, nearly causing Adelyte to lose her grip. "Not so fast," and into her inventory it went. Her hand wasn't dirty or slimy from holding the fish, but a part of her felt as though it should have been? Not that she ever held a fish before, but her imagination had run wild with how they felt until now. Kind of underwhelming. A quick wash of her hands in the water, and she felt good as new. "Oh yeah, that's right!" Adelyte chimed as she rose to full height before slowly moving along the shoreline, watching her step so she would not slip and fall in. "You have that girl you keep on a leash, right?" She could not help but snicker. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry.. I couldn't help myself."

The thought of holding a relationship in this virtual world seemed so romantic, like something out of one of her novels she read. So many wonderful places where she could be wisped away by her soulmate, rescuing her from certain danger to live happily ever after. Maybe one day. "Its so sweet of you that you found someone to share your time with here. It must make the world seem a lot less lonely, waking up next to someone every morning." Placing her hands on each cheek, she closed her eyes and smiled longingly, "I only hope one day I can find my prince charming."

Her eyes opened once more with a sigh, "Not going to find them slogging through the fields to find these materials." Finding a safe place to climb back onto the land, Adelyte would do so. She would allow her legs and feet to dry for a moment before equipping her sandals once more. As she looked down at the ground to do so, she noticed another herb growing amongst the rocks. "One step closer, though."

Nymoria cocked her head as she watched and listened to the on-going conversation, her attention suddenly drawn into the girl's words. She felt herself shift in place as she considered her own comment on the subject, before her hands were moving once more - held up so that both of the players could easily see without having to adjust their position much. Do you like romance novels and stories, Adelyte?

She had to admit it was slightly outside of her regular area of expertise, although she had enjoyed some of the romance stories within the games that she had played. She wondered if that would be similar to actual romance stories or not, although she couldn't say for sure without asking or checking for herself. Deciding it didn't really matter in the moment, though, she instead capitulated on the topic, pulling it back around even as Adelyte climbed from the muck of the swamp itself.

Does that make Wulfrin a Prince Charming? The sign that she gave for the title was awkward, as if it was more of a combination of words and forms that Nymoria had tried to arrange on the spot, and she wasn't certain she had gotten correct. An uncertainty that became clear as she frowned at her hands, continuing to speak after a moment, trying to clarify what she meant. Is that like the hero who rescues the woman who is in trouble? I think I have played games where that happens. It makes for interesting stories.

"Me a prince?" Wulfrin chuckled. "No unfortunately I don't think I'm worthy of such a title. Definitely not charming either. I'm pretty sure Charisma is a dump stat for me."

Wulfrin cast his line back into the river and watched as the bobber gently rocked on the lazy waves. He kept looking around the area for any threats that may approach them. Content they were still being left alone, he lay back down on the river bank and stared longingly at the floor above.

"Then again," He said as he shrugged. "I never was a big romance guy to begin with. I prefer epic fantasy adventures, and while those do sometimes have that motif, I tend to not latch on to it the same as I would an long and adventure filled journey to say destroy a one of a kind ring."

As he lay on the riverbank thinking about what his own adventure held in store, he felt a tug on his line. With a quick pull, he retrieved the small fresh water fish and quickly began to reset for another go.

"I enjoy partaking in the romantic arts, from time to time." she would say to Nym, making sure to turn her body so the girl could easily read her lips. "Nice little fantasies to indulge in. Dive into the pages of the book itself and put myself in the characters' shoes." Adelyte continued to sit by the river side, looking out across the water once more.. almost longingly.

"Well, I guess we are all living a bit fantasy adventure now, right?" the girl would say as she shifted her legs and hips to turn and face her two companions. "And we can fill the pages with whatever we want." Adelyte sounded excited again, her eyes glistening as she thought of all of the amazing places she could explore as she got stronger and leveled up. Alas, that smile she wore slowly faded as she looked at the ground around her. "..though, I wasn't expecting there to be a long chapter all about finding materials for some potion maker." cheeks puffed out in a pout.
