[F01 | SP] Patience, Hunter | <<Training Your Friend>>

The vibration of the morning alarm, paired with the sunlight spilling in through the window of her inn's room, forced her awake against every effort she placed in trying to avoid and ignore them both. Her entire body still ached from the previous day, and she wondered if the game had some sort of recent update to accomplish a more realistic impact, or if her mind was simply filling in the blanks of the memories that she had of the entire routine. Whatever the reasoning, as she rolled over onto her side she felt a groan escape her in response to the various pains that seemed to come from almost every muscle in her body.

I don't think...I'm doing any major activities today... Even in her head, the thought seemed filled with pain. Sighing aloud, she forced herself to rise fully in preparation for the day. A quick glance at the clock confirmed that she had overslept - an issue that effected nothing other than her natural rhythm and patterns, seeing as she had paid for the inn in advance - and she felt another sigh slip through her lips. Today is going to be rather painful, I think...I wonder if I can convince Musei to have something simpler for breakfast.

As if summoned by the thought, the small weasel appeared on the bed beside her, it's face staring up at her in a mixture of anticipation and concern. Smiling at the sight of him, she signed her question to the creature in the hopes that he would be understanding of her situation and predicament. Everything hurts today, because of the training from yesterday. How do you feel about maybe finding something a bit closer for breakfast, so that we don't have to walk as far? I can see if the inn has anything better for food than what we usually get? Would that be okay?

She slumped into the booth with a resigned sigh and a less than graceful thump. She'd argued with Musei for about ten minutes before giving into the weasel's stubbornness. No matter what argument she'd thrown at him, he'd ignored her and simply thumped his tail in a sign of disagreement. Eventually, tired and not desiring to argue any further, she'd relented and told him that they could go - but it would be a late breakfast. The weasel had simply acknowledged the comment before striding over to it's bed and curling up into a small ball, clearly content to wait out her preparations.

A large yawn escaped her as she tried to force herself into a more lively condition. It just so happened that the attendant appeared at the exact moment, and she found herself suddenly fighting between yawning, and the flurried attempt to place her order; an action that brought her to a relative flushed appearance. As the server walked away, Nymoria let her head collapse onto the table, the small bump of it likely not very loud, and yet she somehow felt like everyone in the small café would've heard it.

Can I just go back to sleep now...? She wanted nothing more than to return to the inn, crawl into bed, and wake up in a few days. I'm not so sure Musei would be happy about that though. He'd probably jump on my face to wake me up to come get food. She giggled at the image in her head, amused with the action of her mind crafted version of Musei; it was certainly something she could see the small weasel doing, and a part of her was surprised he hadn't done it yet.

She'd eaten as slowly as she possibly could, consuming each bite as if it pained her to end it. Which wasn't as far from the truth as it could have been, the idea of ending the meal and having to focus on the quest she had put aside for the day - an activity that would mean she would have to continue moving when her body already felt like it was going to collapse under her - made her want to do nothing more than remain in the lounging bench of the café. At least it's nice and soft...and welcoming...I never want to get up again.

Her reprieve and desire was broken, however, when the form of Musei appeared in her vision, the weasel's tail swishing in an impatient manner. It was clear that he wasn't going to allow her to simply remain seated all day. She knew that she had promised to work on the training event today with him, and yet she found herself so exhausted. Something tells me he's not going to accept that excuse though. He didn't even let me sleep in. He must be really excited to actually get to doing something. It was a stark reminder to her that he must have been bored, or perhaps frustrated, at the fact that he had no real role in their relationship. Although he provided her with something she valued, it was apparent in his behaviour that he felt like he wasn't doing enough; a fact that seemed to drive his desire to complete the training program that was offered as a quest for the pair of them. I guess I can't ignore his feelings on that, at least.

They'd left the café behind, albeit Nymoria had risen with a grandiose amount of reluctance. She'd wanted nothing more than to remain seated for the remainder of the day, if not her life. Everything burned as she'd risen from the comfortable chair she'd been settled into, forced into movement by the ever growing annoyance that Musei had displayed at her tardiness. Now that she'd made it out into the street, she wasn't sure that she was feeling any better - everything still hurt, and each step felt like a singular moment of misery. But it is improving. Maybe sitting around would've made it worse...not that I'll ever admit that aloud to Musei. She giggled at the joke in her head, knowing that she wouldn't ever be able to speak a word of it.

They'd made their way through the throng of the streets, sliding past other players and NPCs that barely registered her presence. The dull ache of vibration and background noise played against her ears, half-heard voices passing her by as the hearing aid and Cardinal system struggled to balance for her own deficiencies. A collection of vendors attempting to hawk her stared in surprise as she slid past, their attempts unnoticed even as they called in their loudest voices. Nymoria's own thoughts had taken her attention inward, and as she moved throughout the crowd, she tuned out everything around her. Musei likely wants to get this quest done to be helpful, as if he's not already...so I need to find something worthwhile for him. I don't want him engaged in combat, really. I couldn't live with myself if he got hurt, but...maybe there's something else he could do?

She'd spent some time looking over the available skills for familiars, trying to piece together what would be the best bet. She'd immediately struck off and ignored the few combat focused abilities. She knew, without a second thought, that she would never call upon him to attack something or defend her in any way. That had left only a couple of choices, and she'd been struggling between them, partially due to her own uncertainty with what she was going to focus on. How can I choose how Musei will help me best, if I don't know what it is I'm going to focus on...?

Well, I'm not going with many healing skills, so the healing familiar skillset is a bit of a waste...which really only leaves hunting, scouting and profession. Profession might be useful, but...I mean for how long? What happens once I've mastered that? And...what if it doesn't really give Musei the job that he wants? I should ask him. She turned to the weasel suddenly, glancing at the creature as it rode her shoulder through the crowded areas that they had been passing through steadily. Her hands moved as she signalled to the small creature, before beginning to post her questions to him in an attempt to get his own opinion on the matter she had been trying to make a decision with.

Hey, Musei. We need to choose a skillset for your training. Tail for no, paw for yes. Agreed? The small tap of the paw on her shoulder confirmed that the familiar had not only understood her question, but was ready to answer the options she presented towards it. She gave a quick breath before signing the first option that she had considered to the creature.

Profession focus, where you can help me make stuff in the shop? The thump on her back dismissed the idea, the tail gently tapping her with enough force to be felt. She was a bit surprised by the immediate reaction, but decided that it wasn't worth thinking over too much.

Scouting focus, which can help find dungeons and Labyrinths and treasure chests and stuff. The thump on her back came after a momentary pause, just when she'd been getting ready to repeat the question. Sighing, she decided to give the final option she'd been considering, before knowing that they'd need to start arguing about the familiar's role and engagement. Hunting focus, where you look for and locate things of worth and bring them back.

The tap on her shoulder came suddenly, albeit after a single breath of a pause. Surprised, she turned her head to glance at Musei before she could hold back the reaction. She hadn't expected him to agree to the idea, especially after his dismissal of the scouting skillset.

  • 3 months later...

Alright, hunting it is. Now...how do I go about training Musei to hunt stuff down...? The thought struck her suddenly as she realised the quest really left the option open to her, and no real guidance or direction on it. It was aggrevating not having the clear cut lines of direction that most quests came with, and she found herself scowling at the small creature beside her as she considered what to do next. It's all about finding and locating stuff, so...maybe we need to practice that? But how? Do I just...hide a bunch of stuff around the room and have Musei locate it for me? Wouldn't he just watch where I put stuff and then...yeah, maybe that won't work. But...what other ideas are there?

She gave a half shrug as she realised she didn't immediately have the answer to her problem, and that nothing was coming to mind. Musei had already begun sniffing the area in a measure of boredom, his nose twitching as he pushed it between small crevices. Nymoria sat watching for a time, wondering at the small weasel's interest in searching the area, and how it had chosen the skill set it wanted. Whatever Musei may be, she couldn't help but admit there was a measure of intelligence behind it's movements. Maybe that's just Cardinal's influence, but it makes him appear a lot more personable. More individualistic, compared to many other creatures that can be found in this world. She smiled slightly as she thought about how unique the weasel was, even if it was little more than a program made to attend to her loneliness. She'd become attached to the thing, and knew that she would be upset if he was ever gone. I need to protect him, he's precious to me.

Their meandering through the town had brought Nymoria to a familiar garden court that she had visited in her earliest days in Aincrad. The combination of yellows, greens, blues and reds had been eye-catching; a brief reminder of the beauty that the digital world could bring to life. It had also served as a stark reminder of everything that they had lost while stuck in the gaming world. Nymoria felt her nose scrunch slightly at the smell, and her feet quickly carried her through and past the courtyard, out onto one of the balcony edges of the town that looked over the open air.

Even here memories assailed her; she'd seen more than a few players jump into the void following the news of their entrapment. She'd even considered it herself, once, if she were being honest. Not that she could ever follow through with it, of course.

How exactly am I going to train him to find and return with treasures? I mean, there must be some trick to it that I haven't thought of yet. Maybe I can toss something into the bushes when he's not looking? Or... The thought faltered off into nothingness as she realised no better ideas are forthcoming. Sighing, she leaned against the railing that separated her from the void beyond. A brief flicker of thought passed through her mind as she realised it might look like she was considering jumping, but it was gone quickly as she forced herself to consider her current problem.

Musei had quickly become bored with their stagnant position, making his way down and into the flower beds themselves. Nymoria watched as the weasel dove in between the stems of the brush, his tail swishing back and forth as his forefront dug through the dirt in search of something.

Curious at his behaviour, Nymoria stepped across towards the flowerbed, bending downwards in order to get a better view of what was going on. Maybe he caught the event of something? Could it be that Musei can already hunt for treasure, and I don't need to train him at all? Maybe I've been overthinking all of this, and it'll be easier than I expected. Can familiars already come with skills?

Her pondering was interrupted as the weasel reappeared into view, a small shiny cylinder in its mouth. Nymoria reached out to grab hold of the pair, only to watch in surprise as Musei launched himself past her hand and began dashing off into the distance.

Hey. The singular word was the only thought Nymoria had before she was in motion, her feet chasing after the weasel add it attempted to vacate the premises with whatever it had found. Had she been more aware, she would've realised that chasing it only made him more likely to try to escape, but her mind was solely focused on catching the little creature and figuring out what it had found.

Come back here you! She'd almost caught him as they came around the courtyard's inner wall, but small ledge had hindered her movement enough to allow Musei to launch himself up and over her, his tiny feet using her side to propel himself onwards and past her in their mad little dash. The small growl that had escaped her in the moment had gone entirely unnoticed by Nymoria, a tribute to her own hearing as much as her focus on the weasel.

She was thankful, for the time being at least, that she'd managed to coral him into the courtyard itself; all attempts at escaping the area had been turned away by her reactions to his movements. Not that she was sure she'd be able to keep him in forever. I need to catch him quickly now. Before he manages to get out and into the town itself.

Musei dodged around another group of flowers and brush, darting in between the branches of the brush as he attempted to escape from Nymoria's grasp. The small shiny piece in his mouth glinted slightly as the sun's rays bounced off it's edges; far from enough to cause any sort of sight issues, but just enough to be an annoyance if she happened to get caught in it's path. She gritted her teeth, a small hiss escaping her as she tried to reach through and grab the weasel; her hands coming back empty. She pushed backwards, forcing herself up onto her feet and around the small garden, glaring at the area that she'd seen Musei disappear into. Her hands moved as she tried to call out to him, not even sure if he could see her.

Musei! Musei. Come out here. Right now. This is ridiculous. She stomped her foot on the ground, accenting her annoyance even as she tried to hold back the smile on her face. The entire situation was absurd; she was standing in front of a collection of digital flowers and shrubs, and getting angry because her digital weasel-friend had found something and wouldn't share it with her. Sighing heavily, she forced the tension from her body, trying to push aside the annoyance as she knelt down and held out her left hand. Her right hand continued flowing through the various symbols that signified her form of talking as she tried to coax the familiar out into the open. I'm not mad, or anything Musei. And if it's something you want to keep...that's fine too, I just want to see what it is. Can you come out and show me?

The small nose of the weasel poked out from behind the brush, the glittering metallic piece in it's mouth shimmering slightly as it glanced about. Nymoria held still, waiting for Musei to be comfortable enough to come all the way out, her left arm wrapped around her knees as she held herself in place in the crouch. It's okay, you can come out once you're ready.

She'd settled herself into a seated position on the ground, her movements causing Musei's eyes and nose to twitch in anticipation and uncertainty. She didn't think that the small critter would run now, especially seeing as Nymoria had stopped giving chase long enough for it to realise that she wasn't a threat to it, or whatever it was trying to hide. Calmly, she held out her right hand and began signing again, careful to move in slow, fluid movements so as not to scare Musei.

You can come out when you're ready. We can take a look at what you found, if you want. Whatever it is, it's yours to keep - you found it, so it's only right. It seemed to eye her closely as she finished, as if trying to figure out if she was telling the truth or not. Nymoria simply stared back, her regular soft smile on her face as she focused on looking truthful. She had no intention of taking away whatever Musei had found; even if it was useful, she would ask for it and accept whatever answer her friend gave her. It's his to own, and share if he chooses to share it. I'm not going to take it away from him, that'll just break trust...and we should trust each other. The thought made her realise that the trust wasn't entirely there, evidenced by the fact that he had felt the need to run away upon finding his token. Sighing, she shifted her position slightly, deciding that she would wait as long as she needed for the weasel to trust her.

I think. We should work on trusting one another. What do you think, Musei? Nymoria gave a quick flash of signs towards the small nose that poked out from the brush. The weasel had pulled away into the brush as Nymoria had settled down onto the ground in front of where the weasel had been hiding. She had worried at first that Musei would take the chance to try and run away again, but was surprised when his face reappeared at the movement of her hands. She figured it was a good sign at least; he was keeping an eye out for her signs, clearly watching naturally for what she had to say.

Biting her lip slightly, Nymoria decided to take a small gamble. So far Musei had been extremely protectively of the small trinket he had found, and although she'd coaxed him into a stalemate with the promise he could keep the item, Nymoria hadn't been able to convince him out of the brush quite yet. Maybe I just need to connect with him more. It was easy enough to say in her head, but Nymoria realised she still wasn't sure what had gotten into her companion to begin with.

Whether her words had convinced the weasel, or if he'd simply noticed her willingness to wait for him to come out, Nymoria wasn't entirely sure. What she was sure of, however, was that at some point during her internal discussion and dialogue, Musei had left the safety of the brush and settled onto the ground just out of her arm's reach. He still seemed skitterish, his paws flexing as if preparing to run away at any second, and Nymoria knew that she should make any sudden movements he would simply disappear into the brush once more.

At least he came out of hiding, that's a good start. Now I just need to convince him to trust me enough to show me what he found. But I don't think he's ready for that yet...maybe I should just keep it more casual, and talk to him like I always do? Or would that also upset him because I don't want to see it? She bit her lip in frustration as she tried to figure out the best possible direction to go now, without upsetting Musei. She knew that being too upfront could turn him away, but she also didn't want to downplay his achievements, and possibly ruin any chance of repeating the effort. Holding back a sigh, she instead decided to take a balanced approach, her fingers moving once more as she signed to the weasel.

I'm really proud of you, Musei. You did a good job, maybe we should get something special to eat on the way home today? She didn't specify what made her proud, figuring that the more ambigious commentary might make it easier for the weasel; it didn't bring attention to his find, and could just as easily be understood as being proud of him for coming out of his hiding place. She figured the reasoning behind it didn't matter as much as simply saying it to her friend.

Whether it worked or not, Nymoria wasn't sure. Musei, however, appeared to be content with the commentary and focus placed upon him, shaking the entire length of his body as he sometimes did when feeling excited. Settling down onto the dirt, the weasel had shoved the small piece that it had found beneath it's head - the item obscured from Nymoria's view as Musei tried to hide it from sight. She didn't focus on the movement nor behaviour, instead deciding to give him the space and time he needed. Instead, she turned the conversation back towards the training that they had begun working on, hoping to encourage the weasel into revealing the item through the reminder of their end goal.

Should we work on getting you that hunter's skill? We still need to figure out how we're going to do that, seeing as you're supposed to learn to find useful things, and bring it back. Her eyes wandered over the area, considering their options in a facade that she hoped Musei wouldn't see through. Part of her was also hoping to actually find something, so as to distract Musei from their current predicament, and maybe make some progress on the quest itself. Her fingers continued moving even as she glanced about, continuing the conversation with the weasel. Maybe we could work on me spotting some stuff, and you having to hunt it down and return with it? Would that work?

Musei seemed to nod it's head slightly in response to Nymoria's question, and shook himself out suddenly. Standing, he chittered slightly in an odd way, before staring intently at Nymoria. She sighed as she realised her had somehow hidden away his original find, and while he seemed ready to get back to work, there seemed to be some slight hesitation in his movements. Knowing it would do no good now to try and press the issue of whatever Musei had originally found, and would likely do more harm than good, Nymoria instead turned her attention towards locating a new object that the weasel could retrieve as part of the training plan she had just come up with.

Okay, there's a gold coloured disc hidden away near the stairs, can you find that? It seemed a simple enough object; relatively the size of her palm and something that stood out to her eyes when she looked at it. The weasel watched her hands move as she explained the item to it, and then suddenly it was dashing off in search, his little paws carrying him over to the stairs and immediately past the item she had spotted. Biting her lip, she watched as he seemed to come to a pause, his nose twitching as he glanced around in search of it. She thought, for a moment that he had realised the desired piece was just behind him - mere steps away and around a small corner - before he was taking off again further up the stairs.

This is going to take a moment.

She could feel her annoyance rising slightly as Musei dodged and ran around the stairs, even going so far as to head over to another set further down the courtyard, before making his way back. She wanted nothing more than to get up and show him the spot she had noticed, to point out directly to him what he was supposed to be finding - but she knew she had to resist. This is up to him to find, he needs to be the one to locate the item. Otherwise he'll never learn to do it on his own. Which is the entire point of this whole thing. She reminded herself, biting her lip as she continued watching him. Did I pick out something too difficult? Maybe I should've found something easier...something that's more obvious? Maybe I'm being too hard on him, to start? The toughts surged to the forefront of her mind as she began wondering if his failure at locating the item was her own fault, if she wasn't communicating correctly.

Shaking her head, she pushed aside the thoughts. Musei was only just beginning to learn to locate things, and she had picked something that wasn't too obvious. It would push him to test his skills and ability, while also not making it too easy for him. She needed to learn to trust in him, as well as in herself. If I do everything for him, then he won't grow. Just like how if I let everyone do everything for me, I won't grow. We both need to be able to do things ourselves, and not rely on others...

Nearly twenty minutes had passed since Nymoria had directed Musei on his very first searching attempt. It hadn't gone well, so far. He'd returned with various disc-shaped items, but none of them had been the item in question that Nymoria had originally spotted. Still, she'd made sure to compliment and congratulate the small weasel on his finds, even while shaking her head over and over again at his lack of actual success. If the weasel was becoming overly agitated, he did well at hiding it from Nymoria's view. She'd seen a few harsh tail flicks during her denials of his success, but there'd been no outward agitation towards her or the activity at hand. In fact, Nymoria had noticed an almost intense increase in his desire to succeed, the more often he'd come back without the actual item.

At this point he's going to succeed through pure luck, and having nothing else to return with. Nymoria held back a giggle at the thought, realising in delay how it sounded slightly insulting. She knew that any success was good, as it would help to bolster his enthusiasm and appreciation for the hunting. Besides, it's not like he's been failing...he's been bringing items that are super close in appearance, it's just not the exact one that I pointed out. Maybe I should congratulate him on that, once he finds the original item? It's impressive, in a way...and if this was him finding items and col and materials, well...they all look similar, don't they? So it's not like it'd be a complete waste, or loss, or anything...

She had to laugh as Musei arrived once more in front of her, this time dropping a collection of six similar looking discs onto the ground in front of Nymoria. The discs had been dropped with an aggressive thud, an action that reminded Nymoria of a child stamping it's foot in annoyance and anger. Musei then stared up at her, his eyes daring her to deny that the item she'd pointed out wasn't there. Thankfully, she'd seen him pick it up during his last mad dash, before grabbing a few others for his now deposited collection.

Picking up the item itself, she held it up for Musei to see, her fingers moving as she signed in response to his unspoken question. This is the one I was looking for. You found it second, out of all of these ones that you collected. I also want to say, look at everything you found. They all look similar. Maybe a small colour difference, or a difference size, but they are all similar enough that if it was something you found in the field, it would still be useful! You should be proud of yourself, Musei. I think you did amazing!

She laid the piece back down on the ground with the others, waiting to see how the weasel would react to her commentary. If she'd learnt anything about him, he would take the praise well - perhaps not enough to overcome his annoyance at how long it had taken, but well enough that he would understand that he had succeeded in a way. Now we just need to do it a couple more times, and see if he gets faster at it...that way we can see if he's mastered the idea behind it.

Musei seemed to stare at the offending piece for a few seconds, as if trying to remember where it had come from, before giving his entire form a shake. Using his two front paws, he pushed the various pieces into piles, leaving them off to the side as he organised all his finds. Nymoria couldn't help but laugh a little, the piles containing an easy two dozen pieces of discs that varied in appearance. She wasn't even entirely sure where he had found all of them, although she didn't doubt that they would eventually return to their original places of origin if they weren't picked up again.

She waited patiently for him to finish his organisation, watching the entire time, before signing to him again once his focus was back on her. Should we try again? I can find something else, and see how quickly you can find it for me. This time I'll try and do a better job at describing it, does that work?

The weasel seemed to think for a few seconds before tapping his tail on the ground in a soft thump. Knowing it to be a sign of agreement, Nymoria gave another nod before looking around at the area. She wanted something unique, and it took a few seconds before she spotted something that would work. There's a small figurine that looks like a woman with wings, about the size of your tail. It's standing on a ledge near where we came in. Do you think you can find that?

His hesitation was limited as he considered the item she had described. Nymoria didn't even have time to suggest adding more information, or to confirm whether he understood the description she'd given, before Musei had taken off in search of the piece. She watched, with a bit of happiness, as he headed in the correct direction for the item. She couldn't quite tell from where she was sitting, but she would've sworn that his eyes had already locked on to the piece; his path was winding but moved in the general direction of his target.

He's got this, I think... Nymoria remained quiet and concentrated as she watched the weasel make his way up the wall towards the small figurine. Carefully, Musei collected the piece, before glancing back down and realising it had no way to both carry it, and return. She had to stop herself from rising and heading over towards him, instead reminding herself that he was capable and would figure out a way down and back. Even as she had the thought, she watched him place the figurine into his mouth, carefully beginning his climb back down with an almost exaggerated slowness; his care to not damage the item obvious.

Moments later he had returned before her, the piece placed gently onto the ground in front of her and a look of pride on his features that Nymoria felt was absolutely adorable. Nodding quickly, she gave a beaming smile towards Musei as he looked for confirmation. Yes, this is exactly it. Amazingly done, Musei!
