[PP-F05] I hate sand. It's rough, course, and it gets everywhere.

<<The Traveler>>

Wulfrin had a goal in mind, unlocking the Tech sword arts in preparation for joining the frontlines. The next one he needed to check off his list was the one dropped by Cerberus. From talking with other players about the aquisition of the sword art, he had come to the conclusion that the Survival skill would be a decent pick up before facing off with round one of Cerberus. That meant returning to Floor Five, a floor that took most of its inspiration from Arabian culture. That meant sand, bandits, and blistering heat. The other factor making Wulfrin hesitant to partake of the quest was one of the nobles within Fortazela. For some reason Abdullah had a slightly different algorithm behind him. Despite the quest tied to him being cleared, Abdullah seemed to be the only NPC capable of remembering players as well as holding grudges.

"Guess it's unavoidable," Wulfrin sighed as he finished up in his shop for the day. "Maybe Ciela wouldn't mind going. I could use the company."

In stark contrast to the scorching heat and blistering sandstorms of Floor Five, Floor Twenty-Two was significantly more pleasant. The cool air and pleasant breezes provided a much more enjoyable experience. Wulfrin stepped into the living room of his large log cabin estate. On the couch where she typically slept, Ciela sat reading one of her romance novels she had become so fond of reading. Next to her both Solaris the phoenix and Pearlita the sea otter peacfully snoozed away in the mid-morning light that permeated the room.

"So Book Girl," Wulfrin said attempting to pry Ciela's attention from her novel. "You feel like tackling a quest today? I have to go on it for a skill and could use some company."

Ciela had spent the morning preparing a meal for the two of them, they had been going on frequent picnic dates so she packed it to go. She had just sat down and buried her nose back in her book when Wulfrin came home.

Lucky thing too. Wulfrin had that glint in his eye. She knew that glint all too well. He'd found another quest for them to go on. Or better yet, he'd found more info on the Tech skills he's been wanting to collect. He treats those skills like pokemon cause boy does he "gotta catch em all." She didn't mind though. It meant more experience for her and experience was needed. Especially if she was going to be ready by the time the frontline crew finished the labyrinth. She wanted to fight alongside Wulfrin, Freyd, and Morningstar to clear the game.

Wulfrin began to mock her reading as he came in. "So Knight in shining Red Coat," Ciela responded to her other half in the same tone. "Sure, where are we going?" She prepared herself, getting her armor, sword, and shield all equipped.

"Fortazela," Wulfrin sighed. "Today is another step towards unlocking those ever so elusive Tech Sword Arts. To help stave off some of the rougher terrain effects. I'm prepping to take on the first round of the Cerberus questline soon. I can solo the boss and minions easy enough but being in the heart of a volcano on Floor 9, the Survival Extra Skill will help with the brutal heat."

At the mention of Fortazela, Solaris seemed to become even more energetic. Not that Wulfrin was surprised mind you. Floor 5 was Solaris's original home. Wulfrin wasted no time double checking his gear in preparation for the trip. He wasn't going prepared for a massive fight, but it was still in the back of his mind. Abdullah would likely not take it lightly that Wulfrin was waltzing through his territory once again, but Wulfrin remained confident he could handle anything the stuck up NPC could muster.

"Let's get moving," Wulfrin said as he made his way to the door. "Might want to store the basket in your inventory. If a sandstorm crosses our path, it will sap the durability and ruin your hard work."

As per usual she stored her lunch basket complete with their meals and any snacks they may need along the way. Most of the time she'd over prepped snacks but they would snuggle up on the couch and snack before falling asleep.

Wulfrin mentioned Fortazela, Ciela didn't like heading down to Fortazela. Not because of the sand. But Ciela absolutely hated the heat. Pretty funny considering her main extra source of damage is fire. She grew up in the south and has learned to absolutely despise the heat because of it. "I'm so grateful my hair can't frizz in a game." She ran her fingers through her hair then brushed her bangs away from her face.

She looked over to Wulfrin. She had almost glossed over what he'd said. "Wait. Wait. Wait. You mean to tell me we are going into the heart of a volcano? How do you suggest we survive going into the heart of a volcano?" A puzzled look washed over her face. She almost looked as if she was about to scold him.

"Other than go into a volcano during this quest, what else does it entail? Are we going to skydive off of a dragon?" She snorted as she finished her statement. Looking to hear what Wulfrin was going to state next.

"The volcano is the next quest," Wulfrin corrected as they stepped off the warp gate platform in the heart of Fortazella. "This quest is an escort one. Something about an old man and the desert."

It didn't take Wulfrin long to locate their mark. It was hard to miss the rugged old man that was staring out towards the horizon of the desert floor. Wulfrin was careful as he moved throughout the streets of the crowded bazaar. The back alleys had become almost like a second home to him. Abdullah had eyes everywhere in the city, so the fewer heads he turned, the better. That meant moving fast and inconspicuously. As the knightess and the swordsman in red approached the old man Wulfrin spoke up.

"I take it you need to cross the desert?"

"You're adventurers I take it?" The old man replied turning to face the duo. A name appeared above his head identifying him as Zamek. "If you wouldn't mind, I have a chest of sorts buried in the desert, at the base of some uniquely shaped rocks. The contents are incredibly important to me, but I am too ill to make the journey alone. Would you escort me there? Though I cannot offer you much col.  But, should you offer your assistance, I would be eternally grateful."

The lack of a monetary reward set poorly in Wulfrin's stomach. That wasn't the main reason he was taking the quest. That position belonged to the survival skill.

"Yeah we can escort you out there," Wulfrin smiled as he accepted the quest via a panel that appeared before him. The quest shortly appeared in the quest log of both of them, along with a progress marker.

The quest in hand the now trio began their march into the desert sands.

Ciela watched as Zamek moved very slowly. This was an escort quest. The bane of her existence. She let Wulfrin take the lead and she held the rear.

Ciela looked around, paying attention to small details. She was on edge due to the heat. It was making her quite cranky.

She materialized some snacks and handed them out per usual. Inside the tin was cut up cucumber and watermelon. "Here, have some snacks that are pretty hydrating. I also made sure to bring lots of water."

The trek seemed to go so much slower than their previous quests. Although she attributed that to the way that walking in sand slowed them down. She decided to swap the shoes she wore to sandals, she did not want to walk around for hours with sand in her boots. She changed her skirt to shorts that met just above her mid-thigh. She knew she was already going to fight the heat with her armor, she wasn't about to do it with pants and shoes. After changing, she felt much more comfortable.

An escort quest, Wulfrin grumbled to himself. Great. Just what I needed. We are walking at such a slow speed, we are basically sitting ducks out here.

He wasn't keen on the slow pace they were having to walk for Zamek to keep up with them. Wulfrin had a vague idea of where they were going as he somewhat remembered seeing a rock formation that sorta matched Zamek's description when he traveled out into the desert in search of his familiar. He hated the sand here. The winds that were starting to kick up began to batter his skin with the course granules. There was definitely a sandstorm about to cross their path, they had no choice but to press on. Wulfrin was certain he would be digging sand out of just about every place on his body.

"We're about a mile out of town," Wulfrin said materializing a large scarf he had hanging around in his inventory. "No turing back now, but there is likely a sandstorm about to cross our paths. Might want to revert to those pants dear."

"Absolutely not. I've been on the beach with pants. It's not a fun time. Shorts are more ideal for this trek, at least in my opinion. I don't mind the feeling of sand against my skin, I don't wanna have to dig sand out of my pants later." She knew exactly how this would go if she wore pants, every little crease and crevice would have sand in it. She was NOT about to deal with that. It was awful enough that they had to do an escort quest in the desert, she wasn't about to deal with the awful feeling of sand in the pants.

The heat was bouncing off the sand and as the sun went higher in the sky, the temperature only increased. She let out an audible groan. She hated the heat. Honestly she wasn't bothered by the sand rubbing up against her skin. She hated the heat more. Sand absorbs heat and in turn makes it even hotter. Which is why she chose sandals and shorts, yes it meant that her skin would be hotter, but it also meant that she wouldn't have to take layers off as she got hotter and hotter. If it came down to it, she could change out of her plate armor but that would leave her utterly and completely exposed, and she didn't want to risk them being caught unawares.

The sandstorm blew in swiftly. In an instance Wulfrin's vision dropped to near zero and he could feel the scorching sands buffeting the few bits of skin he still had exposed. The scarf he had materialized and equipped only a few moments ago was working wonders allowing him to breath without much hindrance. His eyes were a different story. Despite being a virtual form, his body still had physical limits imposed by the system. In this case his eyes were being forced to squint just to see. In a spark of genius, he pulled out his smithing goggles and added them to his ever growing desert traversal ensemble. Finally unimpeded vision, well to a degree, the storm still made seeing more than a few feet ahead difficult.

"You might want to rethink your decision, princess" Wulfrin cautioned, his voice a muffled yell over the wind and through his Mad Max attire he had assembled. "The sandstorms can be brutal out here."

As if on cue, Zamek coughed. A quick flash of a hand waving them to continue and a thumbs up, the trio recollected themselves and pressed deeper into the desert.

Ciela had managed to stay behind Zamek, knowing it would be unwise to have the older gentleman all the way at the back of the troupe. She was a slight bit frustrated by how slow he moved, but she kept it to herself. She kicked the sand off of her sandals and as she did she noticed something sparkling at her feet. She bent down to pick it up and dusted it off. She found a brooch that was shaped like a heart and showed Wulfrin. "Look what I found!" She handed it off to him and let him look at it.

She was giddy and after Wulfrin finished looking at it she pinned it to the bandana on her head. "How does it look?" She did a little spin before getting back behind Zamek. The sandstorm seemed to kick up for a moment, but then quickly settled.

After what felt like forever, they reached the peak of one of the sand dunes. Ciela was amazed at how beautiful the view was. As she looked off in the distance she could've sworn she saw an oasis, but then rubbed her eyes, feeling as if the heat was getting to her.

The sandstorm continued to batter their forms as the trio trekked deeper into the desert. It was harsh and visibility was near zero. Wulfrin had come up with some makeshift gear to help mitigate the effects, but Ciela was nowhere near as prepared. They were too far in to turn back, but Wulfrin couldn't help but fear for Ciela's safety. As they continued deeper, Wulfrin stopped abruptly and held out his hand signaling for the others to do the same. He focused on the edge of their vision through his smithing goggles, only able to make out a handful of vaguely humanoid shapes approaching their position.

"Don't come any closer!" Wulfrin shouted over the raging winds. "State your names and business!"

There was no response from the figures. They simply continued their march forward and began to surround the group. When they finally came into focus, Wulfrin knew exactly who they were dealing with. These creeps never left him alone when he came to the home of Solaris on floor 5. Wulfrin drew his blade and took an offensive stance.

"Look I'm not in the mood to play your games," Wulfrin attempted to intimidate the bandits closing in on them. "You can just run back to your boss before I embarrass your organization again."

"That ain't happening," The obvious leader snickered, moving face to face with Wulfrin. "The boss wants you and that fire chicken of yours."

Ciela was startled by Wulfrin's sudden shouting and watched intently as he confronted one of the bandit leaders. He had previously told her about these troublemakers; they were the same ones who had given him a hard time while he was searching for Solaris. The memory of his stories fueled her resolve.

Seeing an opportunity in the chaos caused by the swirling sandstorm, she quickly devised a plan. Positioned at the back of the group, she crouched low and began to stealthily make her way towards the confrontation. The howling wind and blinding sand provided perfect cover for her movements. While it was the perfect cover, walking through the sandstorm hurt more than usual this time. God this hurts, she avoided making any sounds to not alert the bandits of her position.

As Wulfrin engaged the bandit leader, keeping his attention fully occupied, Ciela skillfully maneuvered around him. She took her position behind the leader, drawing her sword with a swift, silent motion. Pressing the blade against the bandit leader's neck, she spoke with a cold, almost sinister tone, "I'd listen to the man if I were you. Might lengthen your life a touch." A smirk played on her lips as she added, "How about you leave, and we let you live... for now." Her words hung in the air, a chilling ultimatum that left no room for doubt about her intentions.

The bandit leader, a grizzled figure with a scar running down his cheek, froze as he felt the cold steel against his neck. His eyes darted to the side, catching a glimpse of Ciela’s determined expression. Despite the perilous situation, he forced a sneer onto his face.

"You think you can scare me, girl?" he growled, his voice rough and defiant. "I've faced worse than you in these sands. But fine, we’ll back off... for now. But don't think this is over. I don't forget faces, consider yourself marked."

He slowly raised his hands in a gesture of surrender, signaling to his men to retreat. "We'll meet again," he muttered, his eyes burning with the promise of future vengeance.

As the bandits backed away from their traveling threesome, Wulfrin could tell they were planning something. The coast was clear for them to proceed once the bandits had retreated into the sandstorm, and so the group marched onward. Wulfrin was keeping a much more vigilant eye out for further intruders, as he was not wanting this quest to end poorly. He glanced up to the HP gauges in the top right of his view. Ciela's HP had dropped a bit, likely from the sandstorm itself, but it also didn't seem to be passively regenerating either. This was not a good sign. Up until now, Wulfrin had thought the sandstorm was just to block visibility and slow their pace down, but now there were actual mechanical hindrances. They needed to move faster.

"Come on!" Wulfrin shouted over the howling winds. "This sandstorm will rip us to shreds! We need to pick up the pace!"

Ciela watched the bandits retreat, their figures gradually swallowed by the swirling sands. Her grip on the sword tightened momentarily before she sheathed it, her mind racing with thoughts of their next move. Wulfrin's concern was palpable, and she shared it. The desert was unforgiving, and the sandstorm's relentless assault was more than just a visual hindrance. It was a lethal force that could wear them down if they didn’t stay ahead of it.

She glanced at her own HP gauge, noticing the drop and the lack of regeneration. This was a game-changer. The sandstorm wasn’t just a passive obstacle; it was actively draining their strength. The urgency in Wulfrin's voice pulled her back to the present. He's right, she thought, feeling the sting of the sand against her skin.

Ciela’s determination was unwavering. The desert had thrown its worst at them, but she was resolute. They had a mission, and no bandit or sandstorm would deter her from seeing it through. “Stay close together and keep moving. We’ve come too far to let this stupid storm stop us now,” she urged, taking the rear and pushing forward into the relentless storm.

The three amigos pressed deeper into the sandstorm. A shape began to form in the distance, only barely within visual range with the howling sands. Wulfrin still bundled up, was starting to wish he hadn't taken this quest.

"I believe that's it!" Zamek exclaimed between coughs and wheezes. He pointed at the odd shape in the distance. "That should be where my things are buried! It should also serve as a hiding spot from the storm! We just have to get there!"

Wulfrin pressed farther ahead. This time his pace was quickened. They had a goal and now it was in sight, and with any luck, they might just survive. They had been lucky so far in their travels, but who's to say how long that would last. It took a bit, but they finally managed to reach the rock formation.

"Well we're here," Wulfrin said uncovering his face and removing his goggles. "Zamek you find your stuff and we'll wait here for the storm to pass before we head out."

"Thank goodness," Ciela muttered as she found a rock offering a bit of shade. She sank into the sand, leaning against it with a sigh. "I’m so ready to be out of this cursed desert." She closed her eyes briefly, savoring the moment of rest, but was soon interrupted by Zamek’s voice. Reluctantly, she stood and walked over to where Wulfrin and Zamek were gathered.

"Ah, here it is," the elderly man said, dropping to his knees beside a cluster of rocks. Despite his frail condition, he mustered all his remaining strength to dig into the sand. His calloused hands trembled as he pushed the grains aside, revealing the top of a small, unadorned chest. With labored breaths, Zamek dragged the chest onto his lap, inserting a tiny key into the lock. As the lid creaked open, a rush of emotions played across his weathered face. Though he smiled, tears welled in his dark eyes as he carefully lifted a stack of letters. "These belonged to my late wife," he explained softly, "and so do these." He revealed a collection of jewels, glinting in the sunlight. "Between the bandits that raid our village and my greedy relatives, I knew these precious items would be taken from me, so I hid them here."

He took a deep, trembling breath, holding the letters close to his heart. "But the years are slipping away, and I want my Dena with me as the end approaches." Zamek’s gaze lingered on his cherished treasures before he looked up at Wulfrin and Ciela with a smile as bright as the desert sun. "Thank you. You've made an old man very happy."

Ciela glanced at Wulfrin and then back at Zamek, just as he vanished without a word or sound, leaving them both in silence.

"That's too creepy," Wulfrin said as the two looked back to where Zamek had once been standing. "I hate how NPCs just disappear like dust in the wind."

Wulfrin carefully explored their hiding spot, but Zamek had seemingly abandoned them. On the plus side though, the sand storm had stopped. That was a good thing he supposed, but they still had to trek back. Wulfrin scanned the open desert before him, now armed with clear visibility. HE couldn't see anything on the horizon. It was nothing but a barren land of sand and rocks.

"Alright you shmuck," Wulfrin's attention was immediately pulled towards the sound. A group of four bandits had seemingly appeared from the rocks surrounding him and Ciela's current hideout. "Time to make good on our word."

"Your funeral." Wulfrin shrugged as he drew his blade. In a flashe he was dancing between the four stargets in the familiar shape of Horizontal Square, but with a more club like stance, making sure to slam the flat of his blade into the bandits' guts. He succeeded in that task for the most part, with only one managing to evade his onslaught.  Wulfrin stood confidently before the four. "This is child's play. No matter how much you grow, my numbers will always be bigger than yours. And Abdullah will never get the best of me."

"That was so strange. Why do they just disappear like that? It totally breaks the realism!" Ciela muttered, shaking her fist at the sky in mock frustration.

She paused for a moment, lost in thought, but the sounds of approaching bandits quickly pulled her back to reality. Wulfrin had already struck most of them, leaving them dazed and stunned. One of the bandits, however, appeared to be more severely injured than the others.

Seizing the opportunity, Ciela moved in swiftly, her sword cutting through the air in a wide arc, aiming to take down as many as she could. Most of the bandits managed to dodge her blade, but one wasn’t quick enough. With the combined damage from Wulfrin’s attack and her own, the bandit vanished in an instant.

However, one of the remaining bandits, who had managed to avoid the stun, lunged at her. His sword collided with her armor, sending a jarring vibration through his weapon. As the thorns on her armor retaliated, wounding him in return, Ciela stepped back with a smug smile. She knew that these bandits would soon learn their lesson.

Following on the coat tails of Ciela's attacks and subsequent tanking of the incoming attack, Wulfrin pressed their advantage with another Horizontal Square. He danced around the weakened bandits with force and agility. His skills had been improving drastically. His time being spent with Freyd and other DPS users on the frontlines had been fruitful. The bosses he had been facing off with were much faster and hit way harder than these bandits ever could. The cerulean square erupted from two of the remaining bandits, it seems the fourth is a bit more agile than the others. The two that had been hit shattered into fractal motes of light leaving behind an info screen with their drops. At least they are useful for something.

"Let's wrap this up and go home," Wulfrin said with a sigh to his companion before turning his attention back to the remaining bandit. "As you can see, we are mopping the floor with you. Might be best to just cut your losses and run."

Ciela lunged forward once more, determined to strike down the final bandit, but he deftly evaded her attack, slipping past her with surprising agility. The bandit retaliated quickly, his scimitar flashing through the air as he aimed a blow at her. Reacting instinctively, Ciela raised her shield just in time, the metal clanging loudly as it absorbed the impact.

Frustration simmered beneath her calm exterior as she locked eyes with her opponent. "I’m ready for this to be over," she muttered, her voice tinged with impatience. "You’re nothing but a nuisance." Her gaze was steely, unwavering as they remained locked in combat, neither willing to back down.

With a forceful shove, Ciela used her shield to push the bandit back, creating some much-needed distance between them. She took a step back herself, using the moment to reassess and prepare for her next move. Her muscles tensed, and her mind focused on the final strike that would end this tiresome battle. The bandit may have dodged her initial attack, but Ciela was determined to finish this once and for all.

She glanced over at Wulfrin, "I’ll try to hit him with my next attack, but it might be up to you to finish this. Give it everything you've got."
