It wasn't often that Morningstar peered through his journal at the past. He had entries filled in from the very beginning—more accurately, a week from the beginning. There were a million things he had forgotten, and looking back reminded him of them. He stumbled upon familiar characters; people important to him. He hadn't forgotten them, of course, but they felt so distant now. Years had passed and he had moved on.

He laughed reading about the time he'd nearly been run over by a merchant's caravan and smiled sadly at the drawing of a girl he'd loved. Then, he shut the book and returned to the present. The First Floor was the most consistent thing in his life. It was always there, whether he liked it or not. The streets of the Town of Beginnings were packed and the sun bright. Merchants had scooped up a large portion of the town's real estate, but housing existed in some small districts. It was busy, and hectic, and overpopulated. He much preferred Tolbana. It was still sizable, but lacked the headache-inducing noise of the Town of Beginnings. People, both players and NPCs, were friendlier and in less of a rush. He often found himself chatting with the same handful of stall keepers in the market. In particular, he liked the town's primary fruit vendor and bought peaches from him regularly.

He stretched, trying to find a comfortable spot on a bench made of old wood. Across the way, Dorian White pestered low-leveled players. "You there! Stop, please!" He'd call to them. If they were unfortunate enough to listen, he would send them on a quest that Morningstar recalled being exceptionally tedious. On the other hand, it got them out of frying pan and into the fire, and maybe that was a good thing. The safety of the early towns were an illusion, he thought, and there was so much more to see.

He crossed one leg over the other, continuing to watch as players desperately avoided Dorian's quest.

Tara frowned as she walked the streets of the Town of Beginnings. Being able to actually walk was something she was still getting used to, so she promised herself to stay on the First Floor until she could get the hang of it. The noise here and all the incessant shouting certainly wasn't helping her temper either. Walking past the stalls, she breathed in the smells of fresh produce being sold. Then, with a twinge of sadness, she remembered that these smells were artificial, all the food was. Some of it looked delicious, but whenever she recalled it wasn't actually real...she often lost her appetite and only ate to sustain herself. She couldn't understand the people who saw this as some grand adventure to be used to seek glory. Could they not see this was a death trap?!

She glared at the guy who was shouting at newcomers, trying to get them to take a quest. "Will you shut up already!" she shouted as she passed by. "We're all already under so much stress, without your senseless prattle! Let them be!"
He'd tried to rope her into a quest before, so she knew him, just not his name. Back then, too, she'd given him a piece of her mind. "If you want to help, then help get supplies or something for those newbies!" she added, wishing she had a weapon so she could smack him on the head with it.

People-watching was becoming boring. Nobody was stopping for Dorian, nor were they doing anything aside from walking. It was disappointing, until a girl started shouting. It pulled Morningstar out of his lulled state, catching his attention. Dorian looked shocked too. He choked on his words, flustered by the sudden string of irritated jabs. "Now, you listen here! I'm the mayor of this town-"

"Ok, ok," Morningstar cut in, rushing to their aid. He gently pulled Dorian away from the frustrated girl, guiding to another section of the courtyard with a push. The mayor quickly forgot about the situation, continuing to seek the attention of low-leveled players.

"Killing NPCs is a bad habit to start," the blonde joked. "Even when they're annoying."

He looked the girl up and down. She fit the criteria for Dorian's quest, he deduced. Basic clothing, and for some reason no weapon. He supposed that the town was safe; you could get away without protection so long as you stayed within its confines.

"Ever thought about taking his quest? It's actually quite useful."

Being the mayor or not meant nothing to Tara, so as soon as the guy even mentioned his rank, she frowned, glaring daggers. Then someone else stepped in and dragged her away. *Huh, how lucky for him.* Tara thought. *But also lame, imagine! A mayor has to be saved by a lowly person. Hilarious...* She shook her head in amusement.

She didn't resist the other person's pull, just blinked at him in surprise. "I wasn't going to kill..." She paused. "That was an NPC? I thought he was, you know, like us! A person!" She hated how life-like some of the NPCs in this game were, sometimes she wrongly assumed they were people and then felt like a fool. Like now. Ugh...

"What does his quest entail? Except constant shouting?" she quipped, chuckling, then held out a hand. "I'm Typhoonflame, you can call me Ty or Typhoon. You are?"

"Honestly, I don't even differentiate them from us anymore. We're too alike; apart from the fact that they're from here and we're just visiting," Morningstar looked at Dorian, who's luck had run dry while handing out quests. He turned back to the girl. "Shouting is optional," he played into her joke. "The quest includes some gathering, potion brewing, hunting, blacksmithing, and fishing. Exciting stuff."

It was a sarcastic statement, but the quest really was worthwhile. He had done it twice; once alone and once as a guide. One more time wouldn't kill him. "I'm Morningstar. Star is fine."

"Here—come on," Morningstar waved Dorian over. "I'll walk you through it."

Dorian, his expression skeptical, walked over to the pair. He positioned himself closer to Morningstar, keeping a close eye on the girl that yelled at him before. "What? What do you want?" He asked, his question specifically directed to the blonde.

"She wants to take your quest."

"Oh, does she now? Well—"

Morningstar frowned. "Do you need help or what? Just tell her what its all about."

Dorian sighed, annoyed. "Fine. As you know," he started, "I am the mayor of this town. As part of those mayoral duties, I issued a small loan to a member of the community a few months ago. Well, the time to collect had come around and I-" Flustered, Dorian systematically ran his fingers over his perfect moustache.

"You see, I've forgotten who it was I loaned the money to. Terribly embarrassing, I know, but I am a very busy man, and I cannot keep track of everything that happens. I'm sure you understand." With a wave of his hand, Dorian continued, "Should you be willing to track down the loan recipient for me, and collect the col, I would be eternally grateful. Just, maybe don't let anyone else know I forgot who the loan went to?"

"You don't, huh? I suppose...we've become NPCs in our own way, huh? Inhabitants of this world, I mean. Forever."

She sighed, looking away in thought. Really, how long had she been here? A week or two...? Probably...she'd lost count. It didn't really matter. She didn't even know if she wanted to go home. She had a really kind family and missed them, sure, but aside from that, she had no friends or partner. Some of her friends had come with her to SAO and were now trapped here as well. Some had moved on to higher floors and made her promise to catch up, which she did, to ease their minds, if nothing else. In truth, she doubted she'd survive her first floor boss.

After a moment, she coughed, shaking her head. "A-anyway, nice to meet you, Star. And thanks for the help." she said quickly, smiling once again, then looked up as Dorian approached.

Upon hearing his quest, she stared at him for a moment. How could he have forgotten who owed him money?
"Wait, so you don't know who it is? How in the world are we supposed to know then? Do you remember anything about them at all?" she prompted.

"Well, hopefully not forever. But yeah, that makes sense to me."

Dorian looked unamused at Ty's questions. Morningstar wasn't sure that anyone had confronted him so directly about his poor accounting skills. "Well..." Dorian stumbled on his words, "I have a few ideas. You might start with Zackariah, the alchemist. He's often doing projects for the town, so it may have been him that borrowed the money."

Morningstar tapped his finger, practicing patience while Dorian exhausted his dialogue. He didn't want to spoil who the real money borrower was, and it wasn't because he thought Ty would be interested in the mystery. He simply didn't want to frustrate her with the fact that Zackariah was not their guy. He was just another cog in the quest's wheel. It wouldn't all be a bust, though. Alchemy was an important part of the game, and Morningstar recalled how helpful it was for him to test out different professions before locking in on one.

It taught him that he didn't particularly like any of the others. An appraisers work was quiet, and customers were rare (especially in his neck of the woods). It was the perfect scenario for someone who needed to get a way from the busyness of every day life in Aincrad.

But maybe, he thought, things will be different for her.

"So, what do you say?" Morningstar asked. "Should we check out Zackariah's shop?"

"Zackariah, huh...Think I've heard the name before..." Ty mused, tapping her chin in thought.

She had to remind herself that this was, in fact, a game and this was probably a fetch quest. As much as she usually didn't like those kinds of quests (who did, really?), she nodded.

"Sure, Dorian, Star and I can check this out for you." Better pay well. she added mentally.

She just nodded to Star. "Lead the way, I suppose? I assume you know where it is better than me."

While they walked, Ty took her time to take in the sights and remember the way back. She was absolutely terrible at navigation, so she used this time to practice the skill. It would be more than useful in dungeons later on. Uf she ever entered one. She also noted that she really needed a weapon and decided to ask this Zackariah about it. Such an archaic-sounding name...must be a mysterious fellow.

Glad that she had chosen to accept the quest (and ultimately a bit surprised), he led her to Zackariah's shop. He had taken the route many times before, and knew it rather well. "Now, I'll warn you. This is the first of 3 'lessons,' I guess you could say. There's a bit of work to do before you can find Dorian's money. It's fun though. Probably," Morningstar shrugged.

He tapped twice on the wooden door before pushing it open. The inside was just as he remembered it. A variety of different scents, coming from herbs and flowers, filled the room. They were strong, but not unpleasant. The old alchemist poked his head from around the corner of a doorway. He had been in the back room, where Morningstar had once crafted a potion.

“Oh, hello," came Zackariah. He had a long, snow-white beard and straight, neat hair. His robe was dull and blue, with short sleeves and a bag for holding vials draped over his shoulder. "Are you here to order something? I’m sorry, but I am currently swamped with orders, and I’m running out of supplies.”

He never remembered Morningstar, no matter how often he stopped by. It was the old man's age, he imagined. Light came into the man's dark eyes, a lightbulb going off to signify a brilliant idea. “Would you gather a few materials for me? Flowers, herbs, rare woods, whatever you can find outside the city walls. I promise I’ll help you fill your order as soon as you return. In fact, I would be willing to show you how to do it yourself.”

Zackariah snuck away for a moment, returning quickly with bubbling cauldron full of fondue. Morningstar didn't remember this part of the quest. Maybe he was getting old too. "Here—take this. For good luck," Zackariah winked at Typhoon.

"Lessons, huh? I guess that makes sense." Ty commented when Morningstar mentioned the three lessons. These seemed to be tutorial quests, huh? How had she managed to miss them before? She could've done them and been out of this small town ages ago!  Although, she supposed she'd always thought that Dorian was a player, so she'd never even thought to start his quest. Goodness, am I stupid...? she thought to herself in annoyance.

The smells of the place hit her like a brick, to put it lightly, and she coughed a little. However, after a moment of adjusting, she took a calming breath. She could just imagine all the potions Zackariah brewed here, just by smelling all the herbs and flowers here, and wondered what effects they offered. She assumed he sold healing potions, maybe some buffs...? That was usually what NPCs like him had sold in other MMOs she'd played, but SAO was such an anomaly in many ways that it was hard for her to trust her previous gaming knowledge.

As she was lost in thought, the man himself came out to greet them. He looked just as Ty had imagined him: an old, but clearly wise, alchemist. Just as she was about to utter her question about Dorian's money, Zackariah asked them to gather some things outside the city walls. Outside...she'd never really ventured there. A sense of dread filled her, but she didn't, couldn't, let it show. Not in front of someone as experienced here as these two men beside her!

"Um, sure, we'll do that! As long as you're willing to help us with something afterward, besides the alchemy." she added quickly, accepting the fondue with a smile and grateful nod.

Truth be told, she was excited in a way. She would finally get to leave this god-forsaken place for a bit and learn a new, very useful skill! Maybe she could open her own alchemy shop later? The possibilities!

Zackariah laughed. "Oh, yes, of course. I will have a reward prepared for you!"

Off they went, leaving Zackariah and his alchemy shop behind. The old man seemed different from the last time they had met, but Morningstar could not place his finger on why that was. Maybe he'd had his hair cut or something.

"He's nice—nicer than Dorian, anyway. A little bit forgetful, I've noticed. I don't think he knows who I am."

Morningstar shifted through his menus, coming to his inventory. A few taps and his sword materialized at his waist. The boars were weak but frankly, so was Ty. It was worth being careful. He could watch out while she scavenged for materials.

"Zack mentioned flowers and herbs and such, but you can really bring back any sort of material you find. Give him a rock and he'll accept it, no questions asked," Morningstar joked.

He led Ty back through town, passing Dorian once again (and this time fully ignoring his calls for help). From Tolbana's front gate, you could see rolling fields, blue skies, and the odd boar. It was simple, and rather lovely. "You've been outside before, yeah? Must have caught a carriage or something to get here from the Town of Beginnings?"

Ty took the fondue and ate it bit by bit while they walked outside the city, offering some to Star as well. (consuming Zackariah's Fondue - +3 LD)
It was actually pretty good, for this game's food anyway. Maybe she was finally getting used to this world's methods of sustenance? Gods, she hoped not.

She went on to search for the things Zackariah had asked for while Morningstar kept watch. Once again, she was reminded that she really needed a weapon, and quickly. She made a mental note to ask her companion about it later.
Ty gathered up whatever she could find and what looked like a useful plant. Luckily, thanks to the game's menu, she was able to see exactly what she was collecting, a feature she could bet Zackariah didn't have! The thought honestly made her laugh.

Once they were done, Ty thanked Star for his help. "Thanks for watching over me back there...I really should get a weapon, huh? I just don't know if I'd be able to use it...wish this game had staffs or something long-range. But yeah...I came here with a friend of mine, who, just like you, walked with me and kept me safe. She's on a higher floor now and I promised to join her, but then I kinda chickened out when people started dying." she said sheepishly, then shuddered as she remembered how many people had perished due to this evil ploy by the developers.

Morningstar raised a brow. "You don't have a weapon? Seriously?" He didn't mean to sound so judgmental, and so he continued. "We can change that. I know a guy on Floor Twenty-two. His name's Wulfrin and he's a blacksmith. He owns a shop called Sentinel Armaments. Mention my name and I'm sure he'll hook you up with a weapon, and maybe some armor too. If that's what you like."

"And there are staffs. And ranged-weapons too, actually. You've got room to experiment," he smiled.

He lifted what he thought was a rock. It was revealed to be a giant beetle. He jumped, kicking it like a football. It crashed into the ground and dematerialized. "There's no shame in being scared. Hell, if I were to show you some of the things I've seen up there," he pointed to the sky, "I don't think I could make you leave Tolbana again."

"One step at a time," he muttered, gathering up another material for their collection. "Take a quest. Kill some mobs. Eventually, you realize that you're just as scary as they are."

He wondered what he would have done in her position. He spent some time hiding out in safe zones early on. He had no one waiting for him, though. It wasn't until he met others that he eventually started playing the game as it was intended—or at least, how he thought it was intended. "What's your friend's name?"

Ty winced at Star's tone. "Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm weird. I just never thought I'd leave a settlement again, you know? Turns out that even the mere outskirts have boars which need killing. And I'm still level..." she paused to check her menu. "Two. Ouch. Wow...just wow. But yeah!"

She laughed at herself. It was pretty lame, she knew, but she'd always imagined this whole thing would be over soon. She'd never thought she'd actually have to live here, but here they were. so she never bothered, almost vowing to never play MMOs again after this trauma. Yet, she knew she shouldn't complain, because others had it worse. They were the ones fighting on the front lines to get them out of here. It was high time she helped.

"Does your friend have anything for more...supportive classes? I used to main healers in my games, but I could do some ranged DPS if needed."

She screamed when the "rock" turned out to be a beetle. "I'd be willing to get a weapon just to never see those things again!" In the real world, not much had scared her enough not to try things. But bugs? Those could make her freak out. Not in games, but up close...Oh boy. But now she could shoot them from afar! And other dangerous things! She could be of use!

Frowning up at Star for a second, before picking up another herb, she added: "What...did you see, if I may ask? Oh and my friend's name is Sunburst."

"Hmm..."

He felt like he had no good answer to give Typhoon. He wasn't sure that supports used any different weapons than DPS or tank players. To his knowledge, it was a difference in skills. "You'd have to ask him. Whatever you need, though, I'm sure he'll have it."

Morningstar didn't recognize the name Sunburst. It wasn't a name he had seen amongst the frontliners. If she hadn't seen their name on the Monument, then it at least meant that they were okay. "All sorts of things," he told her. "An undead king, a giant five-headed dragon, an overgrown moose. A big rock," he added sheepishly. "Things that would have been perfectly okay with squishing me like that bug I tossed."

"But, I'm still kicking."

He didn't mean to scare her away from the frontlines. There was no sugarcoating it, though—it was a deadly place and not for the unprepared. It was best she knew what she was getting into before she chose the path he had.

The road was long, and she had plenty of time to decide. For now, they would pick flowers.

Ty listened to Star's list of things he'd seen in awe. It sounded amazing! As an avid fan of dragons, hearing about the sighting of a five-headed dragon excited her as much as it terrified her. She couldn't imagine she'd be able to kill such a beautiful and fierce creature easily. She'd never been particularly good at combat in games. Her forte lay in roleplay and social interactions, as well as supporting teammates. Anything but just brute-forcing her way through enemies. For some reason, she could only carry a fight in a game if she was playing a supportive role.

"Those things sound interesting indeed, I must say. I'd love to see them for myself. But I have a loooong way to go." She chuckled.
Still, she believed that, if Star had done it, she could too. Everyone started from nothing, after all. It was time for her to get her something.

Ty's eyes sparkled with something other than fear. It was genuine intrigue. "Yeah," he agreed. "We'll start you off with something smaller than a five-headed dragon. I think the next part of the quest has you kill a boar. You should manage, but I'll be here if it gets to be too much."

Speak of the devil. Trotting up the hill, seething with fury, came a large, round boar. It charged, kicking up dirt and dust in its wake. With a click, Morningstar let loose his blade. It screeched as it exited its scabbard, and glowed with an empowered sword art.

Star stood between the mob and Ty, forcing it to go through him before it could reach her. It lunged, but before it could ram him, he swung down. In one clean cut, he destroyed the boar. Blue pixelated remains trailed upwards, dispersing in the sky. Star looked around, confirming that no others were on their way. The coast was clear.

Spoiler

Here's an example of how you could run combat in a thread. You'll go through this a bit later in this quest, but with a much weaker boar and with fewer stats to worry about. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I have skills and enhancements that you don't need to worry about at the moment, but if you're curious I think all of the acronyms are in the new player guide (maybe, don't quote me on this lol).

I noticed that you don't have a weapon skill, so Sword Arts won't be available to you. You can write "Basic Attack" as your post action until you settle on a weapon type. Your attacks won't benefit from the Sword Art damage multipliers, so I'd suggest picking up a weapon skill as soon as possible, even if you plan on going for a support build.

Note that for the quest boar that we'll fight later, you won't be eligible for looting. Loot standards can be found in the guide.

"Awww, too bad!" Ty joked when Star said he'd start her off with something that wasn't a five-headed dragon.

In truth, she wondered if there was anything fiercer than that dragon up there, on the 100th floor. Everyone spoke of that place as if it was the holy grail for them, their salvation. It was, in a way, since that was their way out. All they had to do was beat the boss of that floor. And yet none of the "pro gamers" had managed it yet.

While she was thinking, a boar came at her, charging with fury. She screamed, shielding herself with her arms, as if that would help. She'd hardly even heard its hoofsteps before it attacked! Luckily for her, Star stood in front of her and struck down the beast.

"Phew, thanks..." Ty muttered. "So...do we have dinner then? We could use its meat for something." she added, always one to use any resource presented to her.

"Mmm. I'm an appraiser, not a cook. It's probably best we eat somewhere else. We can pick something up on the way to Zackariah's, if you want."

And so they did. He showed her a cafe he liked because it was nearby and had nice muffins. He paid, of course, for whatever it was that she wanted. Morningstar chose a black coffee and a blueberry muffin. It was his usual order.

Zackariah had been waiting for them. He was happy to see them return with the tiny material collection they had collected. "Ah, yes! Thank you! This will do perfectly. And for your reward," he handed a ruddy bottle to Typhoon, "a mix of my special draught. May it serve you well!"

It looked gross, and Star didn't remember getting any when he ran the quest. "You're not going to teach her alchemy?"

Zackariah laughed out loud. "What? Teach her alchemy? Why in the world would I do that?"

"Because... you... never mind," Star said, leading Ty back outside. "We'll go see Lyle next."

Lyle Tealeaf was a blacksmith who Morningstar always found unpleasant to exchange with. He was gruff, mean and to top it off, did not have Dorian's money. But, they'd visit him regardless. When they found him, he was working at his anvil. He clanked away at a straight sword, shaping the metal with a heavy hammer. "What? Can't you see I'm busy here?"

"We're wondering if you-"

"I don't do anything without payment. Go deal with a few of those pesky boarlets for me, and bring them back whole or else just their tusks. I don’t care which.  They're pretty weak, so even you shouldn't have any trouble.  Do that, then I'll hear you out," Lyle said, wholly uninterested in what Star had to say. He put down his hammer and tossed a sheathed sword to the ground before Typhoon. Additionally, he gave the party a bag of boar tranquilizer truffles. "Here. Take these. Bring the sword back in one piece, though."

"Somewhere else? Alright, any suggestions?" she asked, looking over at Star. When he suggested a nearby cafe, she went inside with him. She'd never really been to many cafes in real life or in-game, so she ordered her usual: a chocolate cake and a fizzy soda.

Ty was glad Zackariah seemed to appreciate the materials they'd brought him, but was surprised when all she got was some weird so-called draught. she thought Star had said she'd learn alchemy here. Was the NPC bugged? However, she didn't say anything and just politely thanked the man and left the shop.

It wasn't any better at the blacksmith's. He just ordered them to bring him boar tusks and tossed a sword at Ty. She picked it up, eyes narrow. "You could at least hear us out! Ever heard of manners?" she asked, annoyed, but then turned and left. Over her shoulder, she added. "We'll bring you so many boar materials that you won't know what to do with them, and then you'll learn some respect."

Once outside, she turned to Star. "What the hell? Are the NPCs bugged now?!" she grumbled, thoroughly annoyed.
