For months on end, since the last raid, Freyd had been playing the part of tank at every turn, being the responsible leader, motivating allies and keeping bad guys in check at every turn. Being respectable was exhausting. He'd even opened a domestic front as he and Elora took their relationship to the next level and built themselves a place together. "Moving in..." The whispered words still left him a bit gobsmacked, wondering how it had all happened. Despite the whirlwind of activity, he truly couldn't complain. Things were good. Really, honestly good. Better than they had ever been in his entire life. And yet, he still felt the itch to cut loose in a manner he hadn't done since millennia past - or so it felt. So, here he was, hanging around in the suburban Underdark with eyes beaming spotter lasers at his ever-predictable perennial target: Ugzeke. He almost felt bad for picking on the ugly giant, having cut him down to size over a dozen times so far. Pity was swiftly set aside upon recollection of the effects of the field boss' wrath - entire villages of innocent NPCs lain flat. Dozens killed. All witnessed first hands. This was a necessity with convenient purpose. Periodically clearing him out would buy the others peace and relative safety, for a time. It also yielded some invaluable, unique consumables. Fists creaked against the nihilistic wraps bound around them. Samael's Pride, notorious for its devastating prowess on the battlefield. Few appreciated the toll such a weapon could take on its wielder, the infinite void within perpetually clawing to consume everything and everyone, including those daring enough to carry such a deadly artifact into battle. It had been strange, seeing it revert to its sword form during a recent foray against the Blight in the wastelands of his home floor - War's triumphant instrument. Wasn't that the truth... His prey was busy chewing on the leg of some now-defunct underground critter unfortunately enough to step in its path. Squished and devoured. That sounded about right for this place, maybe the world as a whole? About to leap down and unleash his backlogged fury upon the boss, something gave the Whisper pause. Gone were the solo rider's instincts replaced by the whims of a promise made and mantle adopted. This was an opportunity to be shared with others; a chance for them to benefit and grow. Wasn't that what leaders did, after all? Limiting the broadcast message to mitigate any risk of drawing in unwanted attention, Freyd constrained its recipients to those already on his safe list. A certain black book in his pocket was already burning a hole there, eager to deal with the less pleasant cohort. Wheels were already turning for that purpose, but this was not the day. A hot breeze crept in through an open door and a black cat slumbered outside on the deck. The rhythmic ticking of a clock forbade silence and yet, not a soul at the table found themselves distracted. Through opaque sunglasses, East scanned his hand. His frown was telling; he held nothing of value. To his right, South puffed on a long pipe. He was older than the rest, and far more experienced. He played a careful game, making few mistakes. When he did lose, he did so calmly, and always showed respect to his opponents. West was the opposite. He was money-hungry, and he liked to win. Many had suspected him of cheating, but there was nothing to prove their accusations. Besides, they didn't have the courage to stand up to him if he was. He was brash and aggressive, but never violent during a game. It was outside, after all was said and done, that you had to watch your back. Morningstar was North. He looked over his hand once, and then a second time for good measure. It was good, but not quite winning. Two triplets and two pairs were promising. Noticing that the rest were out of play, he didn't hesitate to discard his 8 Dot tile. The game moved on to East's turn. East let go of an honor tile—a White Dragon. It was useless to Morningstar. South called Pon, a complete triplet. West laughed and drew his next tile. His discard was unremarkable. The rotation completed, and it was Morningstar's turn once more. The 5 Dot he drew made a pair. It was a step in the right direction. They went around the table again and again until eventually, West made a call of his own. "Riichi," he said with a sly smirk. It was the equivalent of match point. East seemed more surprised than anyone. He was the weakest of the four, particularly at reading the table. Morningstar joked that it was the shades, but really it was his lack of time in the game. He had game sense. The others were simply better. Ruffling his blonde hair, Morningstar took a quick peek at his tiles. It would be his final hand, he knew. West had one tile left to draw and he was confident in his luck. But Morningstar liked puzzles. He had watched as carefully as South and knew exactly which tile West was waiting for. Unfortunately for the latter, the very tile was in the swordsman's hand. Returning a smirk, Morningstar discarded his outlying Red Dragon and pulled the tile that would complete his hand: the final North Wind. "Tsumo," Morningstar announced. The final set was his. With the leading number of points, he had won the game. Mahjong combined luck with skill. It was the perfect hunting ground for a man who grew up around similar games. Strategy and a moldable expression were two skills that he was thankful to have picked up. A monsoon of col flooded into his inventory. It was everything that the four of them agreed to stake, and it added up to a hefty sum. A bell chimed as he stood from the table. A message from Freyd. "Ugzeke found at coordinates attached... Hm." He stole up his longsword and slung it over his shoulder. "No time for another, I'm afraid. I don't want to see you following me, Keita," he warned West. He continued, gesturing to East. "You can scare this guy, but don't try it with me." "Cheers," Morningstar smiled, kneeling down to pet the black cat on his way out. In a rush, he made it to Floor Twenty-three. He was the first to arrive, assuming that others were coming at all. Freyd had waited, and watched over Ugzeke from a distance. "You're a patient one. Sentinel Armaments was a player owned forge that specialized in crafting or maintaining gear for players of all skill levels. The owner Wulfrin was hard at work trying to keep enough blank items stocked up for his latest scheme of replacing the system given starter equipment with items that gave the fresh players a bit more of an edge. The progress was coming along nicely. Outside of that, the occasional NPC from Coral dropped by and made some odd crafting request, but none of them were of any substance. They were something along the lines of "I need a new head for my hoe" or "Sharpen my shovel" or most frequently "I need some new shoes for my horse." All request near meaningless and often times more tedious than they were worth, but it kept him busy. Wulfrin pulled back from his current project and wiped some sweat from his brow. Why does this game involve sweat when crafting at the forge. I didn't even sweat in the desert of Floor 5. His notification box flickered to life in the upper right corner of his vision. He pulled out the small wooden stool at his drafting desk currently covered with an assortment of unfinished projects. Just above the desk was his current goal, a weapon dropped off by one of his mentors, Freyd. It was a finely crafted one handed longsword. Its blade was silver with a diamond edge to it with a black hilt wrapped tightly with light blue almost white leather. Icingdeath was its name. It was gifted to Wulfrin to wield should he ever get to the point where he could lift the thing. With a sigh of longing, Wulfrin opened up the message waiting in his inbox. He found the summons to be from none other than Freyd. "Haven't heard of Ugzeke," Wulfrin said aloud. "But if I received the message from Freyd it couldn't be that bad right, Solaris?" The eagle sized phoenix ruffled its feathers from within the flames of the forge. Solaris had been by Wulfrin's side since he stopped an NPC's goons from capturing him. His red and gold plumage shimmered like the corona of the sun. "Best not to keep the Whisper waiting then." It didn't take long for Wulfrin to make it to the grimy streets of Floor 23. Even less so to find the coordinates Freyd had sent out. Wulfrin thumbed through his inventory quickly to locate the small handmade white envolope with gold trim and red wax seal. It was an invitation to his wedding, more specifically to officiate. Wulfrin had intended to give it to Freyd the next time he saw him, but quickly hid the invite back in his inventory. Let's wait until after the job is done. "So," Wulfrin spoke up noticing Morningstar and Freyd watching over the streets in the distance. "Looks like your putting together a crew. The wedding was 2 days away now and she only had a few more things to do. A ping from the HUD startles Eruda. Seeing that it was Freyd in the need of some assistance. It was time that the blond dusted off that armor of hers, it had been some time since she's been beckoned. Opening up the inventory as she equips each piece. Holding the sword in her right and a shield in the left. Smiling, swinging the sword around for a moment before taking another look at the message. Ugzeke... he was mediocre at best. Why did Freyd need assistance on this, unless there was more to it than that, there always was. Making her way to floor-23, not that far of a distance. Finding her old friend and a few others that she didn't recognize. It would show that Eruda's demeanor was much different than it used to be. Eyes switching to the new faces with a smile. The disheveled lump under the covers begins to squirm like a worm under the terrain. A grumble as a tiny afro of screwed up hair pops free from the comforter. Two squinted eyes are blinded by a screen, as one fights to remain open. "Freyd... ITS LIKE...." The girl shrieks before she spots the time on the bottom right of her HUD. "NOON." Piece by piece, she wanders around the room collecting all manner of armor pieces strewn about the place. One in the closet, another outside in a potted plant. That final gauntlet? Somehow found itself into the bathtub. Loosely slipping them on as she collects them all, she wobbles out the door, grabbing a singular half eaten cupcake off of a nearby countertop with a slip of paper still attached. On her heel, the bright red weasel darts out the door desperate for escape. With a abrupt scoop, players begin to pay her signs of horror as the thing begins to hiss and clamber at all within its tiny 2 inch reach. "Come On, Sprinkles...." The girl yawns loud as the thing begins to scratch at her face, leaving tiny red marks that quickly vanish. "Freyd wants to do a thing." The rattling of pots and pans betrays the girl as she saunters down the cavern, making her presence quite readily known to nearly any entity that could. Some tried, and then just gave up. Raidou 1 Posted August 4 #6 Share Posted August 4 The notification draws itself vocal as it competes with the classical style jazz music prancing off the walls in his abode, followed by the gentle turning of a page. The wanderer turns and reaches for a bookmark and tucks it neatly into the spine of the brown covered book. "I wasn't expecting any more..." His sentence breaks off into no end. "Freyd?" The man murmurs as he lifts a small cylinder of tea towards his mouth, offering a singular point into the blue circle causing it to grow into a fresh window. Eyes dart down the length of the message, quickly parsing it at break neck speed. "I suppose, I can manage." The wanderer offers the screen as if it was a two way form of communication, before he stands and finishes his tea. Placing the cup upside down on the platinum colored surface, he gently pushes in the chair before moving across the white polished marble floor and snapping his fingers. A sudden display of his hands moving at almost inhuman speeds sees menus across his HUD screaming in agony as they open and close, as various little prompts vanish as quickly as they open. Raidou plays the part of conductor as his hands dance elegantly across each tiny button. And with it a crescendo The music in his home stops dead. Inventory organized, information recalled and tracking enabled. A shift of his hand sees his minimap expand to a topography in 3D, a benefit of having full blown tracking. As he scans and the bright red dot denoting <<Ugzeke>> appears clear as day, the man plucks a familiar and very old robe from a nearby rack. A flutter as it finds itself nestled upon a pair of shoulders once again. A jarring swipe sees the map vanish as quickly as it came, and the necklace around his neck begans to glow in a vibrant blue. Freyd had been crouching in the same pose for almost two hours, watching the foul troll do unspeakable things to otherwise innocent critters that foolishly wandered into its reach. It was the first time he'd actually felt pity for the giant spiders of the Underdark, though he struggled with any notion of them as appetizers. Wulfrin wasn't far behind, still apologizing for himself, despite his skyrocketing progression. That sounded familiar. You'd almost think he was Canadian too. The balance of arrivals were a bit of a surprise. He hadn't heard from Eruda, Shiina or Raidou in awhile. Likely they were simply busy, or sleeping. There was no shadow of a doubt that the bubbly performer was somehow only just recovering from the world's most epic sugar high. "Not weird enough? Who else could I possibly go sledding with while riding a giant bug's eye? You know you're the weirdest, bestie." A playful wink laden with complimentary banter might mollify Shiina's wilder outbursts, at least for a few seconds. Despite her zany personality, Freyd knew her as one of the most potent healers in Aincrad, and a bloody hard nut to crack. She'd earned her share of respect, tenfold. "Raidou, Eruda, Shiina. It's good to see you." His eyes failed to miss the rings upon certain fingers, the barest hints of a smile visible beneath his trademark cowl. "Ugzeke's been parked here for a bit, but he's off his usual beaten path. I don't like it. Cardinal doesn't deviate from routine without purpose. If he keeps heading this way, the outposts and villages surrounding Kalanaes will lay in his path. I may have had my differences with the Dark Elves, but won't abide letting this troll inflict senseless slaughter, or worse make a meal of the innocents there. Thank you all, for answering my call." An epic belch echoed throughout the broad cavern, resounding off the walls like a lazy and fat dragon's roar. Ugzeke had finally had his fill, three times over. The large steaming pile of dung where he'd been sitting moments before signaled he was done and already moving on. "Shit." Freyd would have added more, but was too busy facepalming at having slipped right into that one. "What I meant was, there is some sort of anomaly to the west that seems to be pulling in mobs from the surrounding area. We'll need to take care of tubby, down there, then head over to deal with it. By the stench, I'm guessing someone used a busted corridor crystal and landed themselves in Ladonia's sewers, or the reverse. Neither is a particularly appealing prospect." A lot of late night binges of a sugar high induced form of stasis had left her moderately indisposed for the last fair while. She'd look to the rest of her unsuspecting allies, as Ugzeke reeled. "Hmm, cool." Shiina sparked as she'd tilt her frame and catch Freyd on the flipside. Linking herself to his respective stamina bar, would see it turn a notable blue color denoted by this tiny little icon that looked much like a microphone. "You look different cappin'. You get a hair cut or somethin'?" The songstress boasted as she'd float her hands out in front and grab onto his stamina bar on her HUD. Those with an eye locked to their party member roster would see hers tick down just a hair and as she'd drag her finger Freyd's would start to move as if she was moving a volume bar. "Pretty sure I left my other junk at home..." The girl extrudes to her allies as she shifts. A solid *pbth* as a singular hunk of crystal worms its way out of her armor and falls to the floor. He was prepared for a simple outing, but as he watched the other players pass around items he was suddenly wondering what he had stepped into. “Wulfrin,” he saluted nervously to the questioning of the final individual that handed him a small meal of his own. The stats of the group climbed and climbed before Freyd stepped up and did what he did best to the massive troll that seemed to be paying the group no mind. As Feryd’s energy began to recover from his large opening hit, Wilton leapt in behind. Wulfrin’s blade shined with a vibrant gold as he planted the flat of it into the hide of the trolls lower leg forcing it to kneel and become open for a continuation of attacks. Morningstar wasn't familiar with Shiina or Eruda, but he remembered Raidou from some point in time. Something about apples, he thought. Wulfrin was consistent as always. Star welcomed the familiar face and observed as he made his move against the troll. He had gotten better over the months they had known each other. When improvement was at the forefront of one's mind, he supposed that was inevitable. As if he had been doing it his whole life, he stunned Ugzeke, applying DoTs as if his life depended on it (and it may have). Before they could burst it down too quickly, Star chose to join in on the party games. He swooped in, and his sword burst into flames with the activation of a gift from Cerberus. Its a bad omen." @Wulfrin He'd reach behind his right shoulder and rip clean a eerie blackish blade. "Right on cue, old habits die hard." Speaking of course to the fact that field bosses always like to interrupt conversations on the regular. It was like monster bait. "What exactly is it doing here?" The wanderer looks to his companions, but is quickly righted back to sender as the thing blindsides with a feral scream toward the party. A glint in Raidou's eye sees his stance change, blocking an incoming weapon like batting a fly, in a shower of sparks and grinding metal. That demeanor of his quickly swapping from carefree to stone cold stoic in an instant. Weapons locked for all about an instant, before Morningstar comes in like a wrecking ball out of left field and scatters the fucker like a meteor. Caught like a little birdy in a tennis racket sees the thing bounced around before it hits the dirt with a magnificent crash, which sends a spray of tiny rubble. Smoke clears from the impact zone and you can swear you can hear the little birdies whistling for a few seconds as the players shore up. Ugzeke stands and bellows in a loud and echoing show of outrage, and what its met with? 6 players in an unfrittered pile, ready to pounce and tear him limb from limb. The rest of the gang was readily pounding the poor troll into paste, Ugzeke reeling under the relentless assault. "Nice one, Eruda. Good to see you in action. Oh, and you're hair's on fire." It wasn't, but Freyd was too busy jonesing over getting the gang back together to care, and Eruda was fun to tease. Besides, fire was really her thing, as their enemy was in the process of learning. Wulfrin's companions charged around Ugzeke with speed and precision that can only come from a long time spent honing timing and learning each others abilities. Ugzeke erupted in fire from the player called Eruda. Raidou unleashed some massive sword art Wulfrin had never seen before, perhaps one of the custom ones he had heard about held by the higher level players. Then there was Freyd. Wulfrin had seen the man obliterate multiple boss level mobs before, but once the wave of buffs hit him, Freyd became a whole other beast. "On your right Star!" Wulfrin joked as he dashed past The Lightbringer's right side. Wulfrin's sword shined the vibrant crimson of his strongest art which he had set up for on his previous attack. Wulfrin's blade cut through the troll's hide like a hot knife through butter, leaving behind more deep and slow healing cuts, continuing to drain the boss's HP over time. Sadly it wasn't enough to finish the job. The smallest sliver of red was visible in the bosses health bar. "Not much more! Between the party members, it stood no chance. Freyd slammed it with enough force to kill off the dinosaurs a second time. Wulfrin followed up with a well timed slash, and they all watched as its health bar crumbled. They were making him look lazy. Morningstar dashed in for the final hit, weaving by Wulfrin and Freyd on the way in. With a three-step approach, he leaped, smacking it on the head with the pommel of his sword. Ugzeke floundered, wobbling until he toppled to the ground and dissolved. He left them with a reward: six portions of troll's blood. He had seen it in action before, but never had the opportunity to try it out. Star sheathed his sword, happy to see that their opponent had been a pushover after all. "Where to next?" He wasn’t completely drained, but the adrenaline was definitely starting to fade as the passive regen began to work its magic. ”Maybe if we clear out the slimes,” Wulfrin added as he looked over the boss’s drop. “We can circle back for a second round of trolls blood. Hopefully Ugzeke here will have respawned by then. Seems like this stuff would be good to kept stock piled.” - floor shift to floor 26 - The sprawling city of Ladonia lay before the large party of adventurers. According to the rumors Wulfrin had heard, there was supposedly a secret dungeon within the sewers. It was from this dungeon that the slime problem had started to arise. Wulfrin had yet to travel up this far on the castle, so his knowledge of the area was extremely limited. "Getting into the sewers should be easy enough," Wulfrin said stepping off the warp gate. The girl squeals as a handful of stones fall out of her armor as she adjusts it like a t-shirt. Clambering to the ground, she manages to scoop them all up like a pile of coconuts before cramming them into the free space between the metal plates. What would follow is a deeper dive into the depths of floor 26, the burnt and putrid stick of a sewer matched with the racking of footfalls into puddles. Eerie pools of green sludge elude to them being close, which swell the moment they enter the chamber. Bone piles that linger just in the corners of the room begin to pool with the puddles of lime green ooze and join the gelatin as a form of armor. Shiina does nothing more then snicker, scanning the others for approval of her grin before her eyes take a sharp contrast in yellow as she begins to [Concentrate] Out of nowhere she slams a singular song crystal into the ground, and starts to hum a tune. Ground begins to shake as this strange symbol in red rips from her tiny frame, hollowed whispers join in a choir as the music transforms in the most jarringly chaotic maelstrom of church like chanting and rave music. "ITS SHOWTIME! Battlefield Overture: Dramatic Encore!" As if on verbal queue, the typical sword art colors of her companions begin to ooze from their respective weapons without any command but hers. Yet, here he was again, and this time with a larger group of sewage explorers. The swordsman was familiar with the quest that Wulfrin was referring to, although he had never done it himself. The Slime King was a notable foe with great rewards, or so he had heard. He could have used an interior decorator, though. Star avoided spots of goo, dripping from the ceiling, and stepped over piles of old bones far too frequently. It was all kind of... gross. But that was to be expected, and he was reminded of this when the party encountered their first wave of enemies. Bones and slime fused together into horrific beings, and on queue with Shiina's ability, Morningstar made his move. He targeted what looked like the weakest link, and focused on whittling down its defenses. His blade switched from gold to green seconds before making contact with the Slime Polyp, and he shattered its mitigation. Dashing through the hole left by Star, Freyd plunged into the melee with the subtlety of an overtuned weed whacker sporting adamantine blades instead of filament, an army of shades covering his advance like a spoopy vanguard. The mobs couldn't keep straight which one was the danger. Truth was they all were, depending on the moment. The Whisper seemed to vanish from one shadow, reappearing through another and assuming its position, repeating the pattern to devastating effect. Plants versus Zombies could move aside. This was Shadows versus Slimes, as a battle royale. The polyp exploded outright, splattering is gory green, gelatinous guts all over the walls and half of his companions. One of the spindly, noodle-looking ones did the same, though doing them all the courtesy of letting itself be turned into a projectile first. The concussive force of Freyd's fist, enhanced by Shiina's reinforcement of Samael's seals splattered the poor thing into two-dimensional goo on the far side of the chamber. The big, chonky-lookng one, with what looked like dinosaur bones inside, lost most of its left side to the passage of Freyd's keening hand, signaling the first of many appetizers about to be fed to the void. Tumbling through the last of their ranks, the Whisper finished off his kata with a whirling backhander to the final noodle, sending it sailing back towards the waiting blades of the rest of the party. It reminded him of Ghostbusters with how much the walls seemed to ooze with the stuff. Then the slime began to animate. Wulfrin drew his blade in preparation as the sound of a crystal shattering echoed throughout the cave. Adrenaline filled his veins as his blade began to glow with the light of a sword art, but he was certain he hadn't activated one. Freyd and Morningstar charged forward and punched a sizable hole in the slime army's ranks. Wulfrin followed closely behind. His decision to focus more on keeping the creatures under control versus outward damage was likely the thing that would keep him alive in here. Once he was able to secure more options for attacks though, that would all change. Wulfrin's sword cut another large swath through the enemy line. He even managed to land the killing blow on one of the slimes causing it to shatter into fractal motes. "Gods this is gross," Wulfrin said as he shook off the slimy remains.
