Freyd 0 Posted July 28 #1 Share Posted July 28 (edited) "No, look, I don't have a foursome. My three o'clock cancelled and I was hoping to squeeze in a round. What's the big deal? All I want to do is play through." Wearing a lightweight, red linen shirt with white printed palm trees, a sweat-stained white bucket hat and khaki shorts. The smaller man in the argument had a long leather satchel swung on a long strap over his left shoulder. Oddly shaped sticks with misshapen, bulbous protrusions stuck out the open end, each covered in strange knitted caps resembling Pokemon figures. "I didn't bring you here for... whatever this is meant to be." The taller, broader, much angrier man looked like some sort of northland barbarian, complete with giant Conan-style axes swinging from his back. Glowering at his companion, he seemed especially peeved by his apparent lack of decorum and refusal to take the stark and perilous realities of their situation into account. "Do you have any idea how many times I've done this quest? I started here, years ago. Govarron, Marv and I regularly meet to have coffee. Or, we would, if Marv ever actually left his post, and Govarron wasn't a bloodthirsy were-cow. Now, let me pass!" "Listen, shrimp. If you want to get yourself killed playing ridiculous games in a man-eating labyrinth, that's your call, but I won't be putting my neck on the line." Freyd just laughed, putting on a pair of darkly tinted sunglasses as if to signal his dismissal. "Pfff... Larbrook, you never do anything anyway. euled 0 Posted July 29 #2 Share Posted July 29 (edited) Floor 3 was unknown territory for Euled. He had been to Floor 5 once, but never Floor 3. In any case, the quest on Floor 5 was a breeze; why would Floor 3 be any different? As he arrived in the town of Aryut, overhearing conversations had led him to gain knowledge about a "Hoya" who had left two minotaurs in a labyrinth in a forest a way sorts around. Of course, he decided to search for this labyrinth, wading through the forest and finally coming across a big structure that looked awfully like a labyrinth. Sure hope that's it. Walking closer, he stumbled upon a loud scene. A player with black hair seemed to be arguing with a giant of a man. He looked like he was ripped from a Viking movie, burly, buff, the axe and everything. From what he could tell, he was an NPC. ...What the hell are they talking about? Shaking these thoughts off, Euled mustered up a little courage and walked up to them. It would be good to have a party to explore the labyrinth with. "Hey. Are you two going to explore the labyrinth as well?" euled | LV: 6 | HP: 120 | EN: 30 | DMG: 10 | MIT: 18 | REGEN: I EQUIPPED ITEMS: Accruer | Perfect Tier 1 Straight Sword | DMG III Fur-Hooded Down Jacket TIER 1 LIGHT ARMOR | MITIGATION II, REGEN I SKILLS: Straight Sword R4 Light Armour R1 Survival Edited July 29 by euled
Freyd 0 Posted July 30 Author #3 Share Posted July 30 The shorter, strangely dressed man turned, looking like he was about to say something, but stopped. "Yes." A grin spread beneath his darkened glasses. "Yes we are!" Turning back to the larger, broader, smellier-looking man, he sounded petulantly gleeful in his response. "Quest accepted, Larbrook. Now you're stuck with us, whether you like it or not." The bigger man groaned, palming his face like he'd just learned his mother-in-law was visiting for a week. "Nice timing, guy. Name's Freyd. Welcome to the labyrinth that's kinda-but-not-really a labyrinth This bigshot is Larbrook. His job is to harass any players who come here and try to feed them to the minotaurs." An outstretched hand and short sleeves revealed a muscles arm suggesting that, whoever he was, he wasn't entirely the crazed, clownish oaf implied by his bizarre outfit. Larbrook's braids and mustache bristled, but he said nothing, feeling that the other fellow would just twist his protests against him. "Fine," the barbarian finally blurted. "But you get whoever you get. I'm not finding you any favourites after the stunts you pull." "Works for me." A quick hand gesture dismissed his ridiculous outfit, replacing it with black on black traveling garb capped by a fine woolen cowl concealing the upper portions of his face. The glasses were gone. What remained looked much more like someone who might feel at home in the latest Assassin's Creed spinoff. At least the playful grin remained. "I'm sure my new friend and I can handle ourselves just fine."
euled 0 Posted July 30 #4 Share Posted July 30 So this guy's "Larbrook?" Honestly, to Euled he looked like a giant wall towering over the labyrinth. Like a mini-boss or something...except the fact that he was getting nagged by the player far smaller than him. It's a quest, huh? Euled stopped himself from metaphorically drooling at the oodles of EXP he'd obtain from this. He'd wanted a quick boost ever since that skirmish in the garden. "I'm Euled. Nice to meet you, Freyd." He shook his hand with a firm grip, deciding to gloss over how he described the NPC next to him. Getting a closer look at him made him realise that he had quite a bit of muscle definition...and a stupid looking outfit. "Larbrook" looked about fed up with everything. The chestnut haired player himself grinned at Freyd's confidence. ...I kinda feel bad for him... "You bet I can." He walked past the two, starting to enter the "kinda but not really" labyrinth affectionately dubbed by Freyd.
Freyd 0 Posted July 30 Author #5 Share Posted July 30 "You done this one before, Euled? It's actually been a while since I ran through here. It might even predate my time in my current guild." Freyd eyed the other player's gear while extending a formal party invitation and sharing the quest. He spent as much time appraising people as he did items, it seemed. In this case, the latter confirmed that Euled was still in the starting ranges. One could never be too careful, after all. A place like this might make a tempting location for a player killer ambush. Rounding turn between high stone walls, Larbrook came to a jarring halt, his eyes wide with surprise. Catching up to their escort with a few quick strides, Freyd peered in the same direction to much the same effect. A long corridor stretched out before them, much like the others they had seen thus far, save that the walls on both sides were pock-marked with massive spherical divots and the floor caked with thick white powder, like the missing segments of stone had been utterly pulverized. "This wouldn't have been done by the minotaur's weapons." Freyd was instantly alert a the prospect of anything that could throw with such force. "What could possibly-" he squinted towards something in the distance. "Are those.. giant golf balls?!" Larbrook, meanwhile, looked like his brain had just lost its internet signal. euled 0 Posted July 30 #6 Share Posted July 30 "Nah...I've heard about it, but I'm just here for the EXP, honestly." He felt the dirt by his feet crunch into solid concrete, opening his menu for a second and accepting the invitation, a small HP bar popping up underneath Euled's. Another turn led them to a long corridor, the axe wielding man and his party member rounding the corner in shock. He stuck his head out to see just what exactly had them flabbergasted, in the same degree. An unknown white powder was sprayed across the floor, the texture coarse and rough. Inside the walls were indents of dome-like shaped. They weren't smooth at all; it was like someone carved it out. From what he'd heard, the minotaur didn't have a ball mace of any kind..so how could this have happened? What the hell is this? Who could've done this? A revelation came to Freyd as Euled widened his eyes in disbelief, genuine disbelief. "No way... You're saying...Golf balls exist in SAO?!!"
Freyd 0 Posted July 30 Author #7 Share Posted July 30 (edited) "FORE!" Barely an instant passed before giant, hairy beast man in a tartan skirt and beret came screaming around the corner wielding some sort of mutant shillelagh, hefting it in a mighty swing against a spherical stone about the size of Freyd's head. Said ball missed said head by about three inches, embedding itself into the adjacent wall with a giant explosion of pulverized stone leaving an imprint to match all of the others they'd just seen. "What the... speed golf meets murder ball?! WTF?!" Unwilling to entertain whatever sick game the minotaurs were up to, the entire scene reminded him of a sick meme-stricken dream involving giant flexing goblin gods, too much flexing and a whole lot of players he somehow knew but hadn't met yet. It was like watching a fever dream come to life, and trying to decapitate you. "Keep your heads down!" Warning given, Freyd reacted on instinct, rushing towards the ball launcher like a rocket and catching him in the furry midriff with a blow the folded the beast's torso in half before exploding him into a giant ball of bursting light fragments, not unlike the pulverized stone. No sooner had Kantaras rounded on them than had Freyd successfully put him down, his cowl swiveling defensively in case there might be additional hostiles. "Everyone okay? Larbrook? Euled. What the hell is going on in here?! Did I miss a memo and end up in bizarro world?" *** Spoiler Post Action | ST-I (x12, 12 EN): 12 EN - (Rested 2/2; Stamina) = 9 EN. euled 0 Posted July 31 #8 Share Posted July 31 "Wh-what?" He swivelled his head at the commanding voice to see a giant half-beast half-man wearing a skirt and a beret far too small for its head. In its arms was a weapon that looked like a giant stick adorned with small jagged spikes around the handle. On the tip of the stick held an amber coloured orb enfused into the material. It looked similar to a stereotypical mage's wand. Though he didn't get to analyse the beast for long before a big object went swinging at his head, darting away and watching it plant a big indent into the labyrinth walls, said indent exploding into game data. "...So they weren't golf balls after all." Raising his arm instinctively, Euled watched as Freyd's voice rang in his ears. "No way! I'm going as we-" Still, his arms moved before he thought about it, tucking his head in. The moment after he looked up again, the minotaur had a giant slice through its midriff, before exploding into tiny little shards, disintegrating into nothing. In one hit...? The beast was felled before he had a chance to even draw his sword. Either Freyd was really powerful, or Euled was really stupid, or both. For his dignity, he decided to chalk it up to the former. "Sheesh...I'm alright, but leave some for me, would you?"
Freyd 0 Posted August 1 Author #9 Share Posted August 1 "I... uh... sorry? You can have the next one." Pausing to survey the last drifting remains of their very temporary foe, Freyd scratched at the back of his cowl while stretching out his arms. Sure, Freyd, go all Canadian on him and apologize for doing the right thing. "Wasn't actually trying to hit him that hard, but given the pot shot he took at my head, I can't say that I really regret it." Turning to their escort, the dark clad warrior took on a much more clinical, nigh-inquisitorial mien. "What's the deal, Larbrook? I get it when I show up randomly trying to play through, but the mobs? Where the heck did this come from?" Their brusk companion looked to be at a complete loss to explain the absurdity. "How would I know? You're the one who showed up in the matching getup. You tell me?" By the twitching of his moustache, he was on edge over the whole mess, possibly also because that projectile had only missed his face by an inch and a half. Freyd had only done it on a lark, fully intending to test the system with a degree of ridiculousness. "I don't suppose you have any thoughts, Euled? This one's kind of a new twist that I really wasn't expecting."
euled 0 Posted August 1 #10 Share Posted August 1 He put his hands in his non existent coat pockets, watching the last few shards of the beast-human minotaur thing slip away. For something so big and dangerous looking..it didn't look so dangerous now. Especially when it burst into a big heap of flying pixels everywhere. It might've been a little cooler if blood started spewing out everywhere...but he wasn't sure if he could stomach that after killing a rabbit or something. "Fair enough." Looking back at the burly, buff Larbrook Euled formed a connection between the synapses in his brain. Accompanying one of them was boring, but two of them was entertaining. They're like a comedy duo...I guess Larbrook is the "Straight man." Euled stopped himself from chuckling a little at the look of his face. He turned towards Freyd, starting to continue. "Well, if you're asking me if I expected to see a giant beast-man ice cream swirl with a skirt and a big stick, then no. From what I've heard, this guy isn't gonna be the last one left."
Freyd 0 Posted August 2 Author #11 Share Posted August 2 Shrugging, having no better alternative to propose, Freyd motioned for them to move on. Larbrook led them deeper into the labyrinth, his wounded pride dampening an naturally dour demeanor. "Don't mind him," Freyd whispered to Euled. "He's just cranky because someone stuck him here without a reason or explanation. I've tried a dozen times to get it out of him, but he doesn't even seem to know why he's on this floor. Sounds like someone uploaded some incomplete content in a rush to meet deadlines, if you ask me. Kayaba probably tossed the programmer who did it into the game as punishment. That totally sounds like a 'him' thing to do." Once away from the ball beaten battlefield, the rest of the labyrinth became a mind-numbing series of identical-looking twists and turns designed to confound any attempts to navigate through. Freyd seemed nonchalant about the whole thing, content to follow Larbrook, yet occasionally nudging their guide in a way that implied a greater awareness. Hands stuffed into a pair of indiscernible pockets, the Whisper's manner seemed strangely relaxed and casual. "So," he began, turning to face Euled, yet clearly alert for another potential ambush. "You seem to be in a hurry to clear this place and level up. Any particular reason, or just making up lost time?" *** Freyd uses Tracking on Govarron. Note: The other minotaur can be found on the next post.
euled 0 Posted August 2 #12 Share Posted August 2 Euled glanced over to Larbrook as his shoes clanked against the labyrinth's hard floor. He listened to Freyd speak, feeling sympathy for him. "Poor guy. So they just left him here to guard this little thing till SAO gets cleared? Talk about sad game design." He snickered a little at the jab at Kayaba. Similar to a lot of other players, there was a lot of hatred harboured for him. I mean, he was the one who trapped them in this game, after all. They continued their trek, Euled keeping his pace so that he would walk right next to Freyd. Trusting the NPC seemed like the smartest move in a labyrinth like this. Glad he's here. Honestly, if I tried doing this alone, I think I'd be dead already... It looked identical no matter how many corners they turned. No indents of "giant golf balls," nothing to discern it from the last hallway. It was a little dizzying. "Oh...Well, yeah, I've gotta make up for all that time I spent twiddling my thumbs and going nothing, y'know? I've gotta get to that boss raid as soon as possible."
Freyd 0 Posted August 2 Author #13 Share Posted August 2 "You and me both. It took me years to build up the nerve to leave the Town of Beginnings. Long story, but I was convinced that Cardinal had a vendetta against me, personally. It might be fairer to say that it's directed at every player in the game." Freyd seemed surprisingly calm about it, given that he'd just declared the overlord of their digital domain as a nemesis. It had taken a long time to get to being casual about it. Even now, the game occasionally liked to tweak his nose to keep him on his toes. "Who knows. Maybe the whole golf thing is just a bit of random AI garbage that's getting purged in the background. I remember, once, slipping through this portal and ending up in this weird backdoor buffer area of the game where all the broken and malformed mobs get dumped before deletion. That was really messed up. This? Lightweight by comparison." The Whisper smiled at talk about joining the raid, knowing that they needed fresh blood on the front lines more than people realized. Motivation was key. "Let me know if I can help you out that way. We might even try tackling a local field boss once Govarron is down. Every little bit of EXP helps, amirite?"
euled 0 Posted August 2 #14 Share Posted August 2 "Hahah. Well, if there's anything I had to pick that I was grateful to the Cardinal system for, it'd be the pain scaling. I don't think half of the players on the frontlines would've went outside Floor 1 if it wasn't for the pain mitigation. But that's just my two cents, I guess." It seemed like they could diss the system of the game without any repercussion. It was good that Kayaba wasn't watching over them this whole time; it brought him a shred of comfort in the midst of the whole death game scphiel. "That...doesn't sound very pleasant. How the hell do you even manage something like that?" For such a vast and ambitious game like SAO, even with top notch technology there had to be some flaws and bugs up and about. Euled thankfully hadn't experienced any thus far, but maybe that was just because he never did anything out of the ordinary for a long while. He smiled at Freyd's offer. Boss fights were the selling point of RPGs in Euled's view: the thought of having a grandiose battle with a giant enemy that ends up barely edging into a win was just awesome. Well, maybe except for the part that you die if you lose. Not like he was going to lose any time soon. "You sure are. Sounds like a deal to me."
Freyd 0 Posted August 2 Author #15 Share Posted August 2 "Fair point about the pain mitigation. As much as I like to rag on the system, there are strong elements of fairness to it, which just seems weird in the context of a death game. Really makes you wonder what Kayaba's true motives might be." Freyd shrugged, dropping the topic before he delved too deep into philosophy. Strolling through any labyrinth, even this one, wasn't really ideal for that sort of thing. "You'll be amazed at what you can manage when you simply have no other choice. How many players in the game could ever picture themselves wielding a sword in defense of their actual lives when they logged on? I've seen some deeply messed up shit. You press through, especially when others' lives depend on you. If there's one lesson to be learned in here, it's how much we need to depend on each other. I'm practically the poster child for solo grinding. If I can learn that lesson..." His voice trailed off, the man's cowl swiveling around as if in search of something. "Larbrook?" Their larger companion had also paused, hefting his imposing axe in both hands as if expecting trouble. "He's close." "I see him. He's coming at us from the right, around that corner." One might be forgiven for wondering how that was possible. Freyd's unique approach and connection to the mysteries of shadow enabled him to peer through shadows across the world when tracking his foes. It was a long and complicated story, but served its purposes. "Come here, you big bastard." Reaching down into his own shade, Freyd grit his teeth, every muscle in his body suddenly bulging taut as his hand pierced the darkness to grab something and pulled. A roar erupted up ahead as the second minotaur, Govarron, writhed and struggled into view, his motions jerking awkwardly until Larbrook and Euled both realized that his own shadow was forcing him into view. "You said this one was yours," Freyd whispered, clearly struggling against the mob's raw strength through his strange mystical tether. "Go get him! euled 0 Posted August 3 #16 Share Posted August 3 (edited) "Eh. Maybe he wants to challenge us, maybe he was just plain bored. I guess we'll just find out when we get to floor 100 and beat it." No matter what his motives are, at least that there was some kind of silver lining to this nightmare. Otherwise, SAO would've been a lot harder to beat. "Huh...I guess that's true. I've always thought that you should just go at quests alone, but in a big raid, that's not exactly possible.." Reading between the lines was never Euled's speciality, so he didn't dwell on the topic. An SAO vet was always someone he was willing to shift his perspective to, especially a frontlines player. Someone like Freyd was the perfect candidate. The imminent danger made Euled unsheathe his sword again, eyes furtively scanning for any sign of the monster. "Huh? How do you know?" His question was answered by Freyd somehow grasping onto something, struggling deeply. The sound of roaring pierced their ears, and before him laid another minotaur, lashing out wildly against whatever force was pulling in. You couldn't see it from a glance, but it almost looked like his shadow was moving him instead of himself. Is he pulling on his shadow or something? Though, this effort made the minotaur very easy to attack. He grinned as he readied his sword, rushing at the beast. "You got it!" The pitch black blade was enveloped by a scarlet red glow as he readied his sword to his waist. Then came a wide slash to the monster's torso, doubling down with another slash, making an X damage trail into the minotaur's mid riff. The little green slivers on its HP rapidly depleted, going into the red zone. He darted back, the beast weakened. His sword skill made the monster jerk weirdly and pull his head downwards, seemingly stunned. If there was any time to hit it, it was now. "It's on its last legs! Finish it, now!" Freyd 0 Posted August 3 Author #17 Share Posted August 3 (edited) Releasing his death grip on Govarron's shade, Freyd slid past euled on the left, tapping his boot as fair warning of his passage. His foot catching on the minotaur's hefty hoof, Freyd used it as a level to bring himself upright and add extra momentum to his swing, catching the beastman with a nasty cross cut that spun his head around like a twist top. A horrible crunching sound followed, accompanied by the mob's sudden and resplendent demise, its shards spill all over the floor in a radial pattern around both players before dissipating. "Nice work! We make a good team. Good thinking with the stun too." Even Larbrook had to admit it, albeit with only a grudging grunt. "Hey, Lar. Is Yeff still hanging around these parts? I think we're all done in here, but I'm thinking euled here could use a real challenge." He hadn't faced off against the dark elf exile in ages. euled 0 Posted August 3 #18 Share Posted August 3 Euled glanced over to Freyd as he executed the attack, killing the minotaur. He was glad that his stun had succeeded, though it was a bit overkill. He grimaced at the sound of the beast getting decapitated. Man, I'm grateful that these guys just disappear into shards and don't...bleed out everywhere. It was still a game, after all. Any extreme gore like that and it would probably be taken off the market. The corpse faded away into nothing, any trace of it being there gone. "Yeah, thanks." With a smile, he placed his sword back into his sheathe cushioned into his coat with a belt. "I guess that's the last one down." "Yeff"? It became apparent to Euled that this guy had a habit of nicknaming things. Everything he did made him seem carefree, like he had done this a million times before. Maybe he had, based on his skills. "I don't know who Yeff is, but if you're asking for a challenge, then I won't refuse!" Recovering EN 1/
Freyd 0 Posted August 3 Author #19 Share Posted August 3 Larbrook groaned, looking like he was about to protest, but decided it was better to just be rid of them both. "He's still in his usual spot, hanging around near the mouth of the Caverns of Faerie. It's your funeral if you want to go after him, though." he grudgingly considered how both warriors had fared in his labyrinth. "Yeah. You might survive. Maybe. If you do, be sure not to come back." That last comment was clearly directed at Freyd. "But, Larbrook, I'd miss your charming personality!" Slapping the big man on the backside, Freyd sauntered away from the maze and into the nearby woods, wondering whether he might have pushed his luck just a little too far with that last bit. Better to keep moving forward and never look back. Both men heard the wooden grip of Larbrook's axe handle crunch and splinter as his face turned bright red, but nothing else came of it. *** Freyd uses Tracking on Yeff EN recovery (1/2)
euled 0 Posted August 3 #20 Share Posted August 3 "I'm not gonna get beaten anytime soon." The "Caverns of Faerie"...Sounds...generic? The name "Yeff" made him think of a giant Yeti, something that didn't sound threatening or dangerous in the slightest. Though, maybe he could soak up some pain they inflicted on him. With Larbrook gone, it was just Freyd and Euled, not that Larbrook had done anything to help them. He got why Freyd liked annoying him so much, if only just a tiny tiny bit. He went to follow Freyd out of these claustrophobic metal hallways, shoving his hands into his coat pockets. A glance back at Larbrook before he left made him snicker a tiny bit, pretending to wipe his mouth to hide it. Maybe down the road he would troll Larbrook a little too, if he ever retook this quest ordeal. The minotaurs would probably respawn, which meant more sweet sweet EXP for him. "So, who's this "Yeff"? Sounds like a boss or something."
