She'd felt the wave of exhaustion coming over her for the last little while as she tried to comfort herself on her success thus far. She'd managed, to say the least, far better than she ever could have mere weeks ago. What progress she'd been putting into her growth and development was clear in the way she had handled herself in the conflict between the two bandits. It had surely not been the easiest of fights, but she'd managed to walk away alive - and that was what mattered, in the end. That's all that matters right now, is that I can walk away alive. That's how we get stronger, just by being able to walk away alive. Continuing forward, no matter how much it hurts...no matter how close it comes. So long as we can keep putting one foot in front of the other... Her head tilted to the side as she considered her thoughts, realising the dangerous line they towed. She knew that she still needed to be careful, to watch how much she pushed herself. It would do no good to go and get herself killed in the attempt to rush towards the frontlines, but she also knew there was some truth in the idea of continuing to push herself upwards. I can't get better if I don't try, and although it's dangerous...I just need to do it smartly. So long as I can keep a level head, and not do anything too risky, I'll be fine. There was no use remaining where she was, considering that there was more of the keep to clear. If nothing else, she had at least five other bandits that need to be brought down before she could rescue the teenager she'd been sent after. Shaking herself fully, she pulled open her menu and glanced at the available items that she had brought with her. The selection was, unsurprisingly, limited. I need to get better prepared before heading into these things. I'm missing a lot of basic items that could help me out here... She scolded herself as she considered the ill-prepareness with which she had thrown herself into, realising that half her difficulties were her own faults. Had she simply taken the items that would give her the best boosts, and best chances of succeeding in the conflicts she was going to have with the bandits, she may not have had to burn through all her health potions immediately. I wouldn't have been in as much danger, but I also may not have learnt a very valuable lesson. It's in the past now, and I can only learn going forward. For the time being...let's just get this done and over with. She pulled a few items from her inventory, consuming them before taking some time to rearrange the things she could use in combat immediately. She wanted to be better prepared, better set for the coming fights, without needing to rely on the idea of running away. If I'm smart, I can complete this. I just need to go slow...and not overwhelm myself again. Yeah. I can do this.... Nymoria 0 Posted August 2 Author #23 Share Posted August 2 Her steps had taken her from the dirt tunnel into what appeared to be some basement of the keep itself. She'd paused at the opening in the wall, clearly caused by the complete faultering of the rocks that had once made up it's exterior. She only moved forwards once she had confirmed that no major threats awaited her, sabre still in hand and ready for anything to jump from the shadows. If she had been hoping for an ambush, however, she found herself disappointed as nothing more than the crates of long discarded goods kept her company. Alright, so we have a keep basement. That means that I'm in the right area, at least...there should be a jail cell around here, somewhere... Nymoria pushed forwards, coming around a corner and stopping as she spotted a single individual down the hallway. The man was raggedly dressed, similar in styling to the previous bandits she had fought, and held a single scimitar in his hands. His gaze was, for the moment, looking down another hallway and he had yet to notice the appearance of Nymoria into the area. He was close enough, though, that she knew another step forward and she would alert him, drawing him into a fight. This is what you're here for...let's do this. She stepped out and into the hallway fully, making her way towards the bandit even as she saw his head begin to turn towards her. At the least second she pushed herself into movement, throwing her sabre out in a strong slashing motion aimed at the centre of his form, hoping to catch him by surprise. Nymoria 0 Posted August 2 Author #24 Share Posted August 2 Her first strike had been strong, and although the bandit had managed to catch Nymoria with an upward swing, she'd slipped out of the range of the majority of the blade. She watched as her armour took the brunt of the blade's force - her health bar dropping slightly in response, but her overall condition well off compared to her first fight. She gave a sly grin to herself as she prepared to come back around and up at the bandit, her movement stopped suddenly as she realised just how close her was to her. Nope! Too close! Back! Back! She parried a few poor strikes as she stumbled backwards, placing more distance between herself and the bandit, hoping to clear some of the air and give herself some room for manoeuvrability. The exhaustion from earlier had, thankfully, left the majority of her body and she moved once more like she had when she first encountered the pair of bandits. A few steps backwards and the space was between them again, giving Nymoria the chance she needed to prepare herself. Before the bandit could take control of the area that they were fighting in, Nymoria launched herself back into motion towards him, bringing her sabre up into a flurry of blows meant to put him as off balance as she had been mere seconds ago. Her ploy worked, and she found the man being driven further and further backwards, a look of confusion on his face as he tried desperately to keep her from pressing him any further. She took advantage of the situation, bringing her sabre around again and again, aiming for the weak point in his defences in the hopes of overwhelming him. Nymoria 0 Posted August 2 Author #25 Share Posted August 2 The scimitar bounced backwards as Nymoria's sabre blade collided with it again, forcing the bandit further backwards. She could see the wall behind him, taking away and chances he had at possibly escaping. Instead, she'd managed to lure him perfectly into a position of weakness, one where he was at the mercy of her continued assault. She pushed herself into a flurry of strikes meant to weaken the grip on his scimitar, watching as sparks began to fly off the metal of each blade. Almost got him, just a little bit more. She kept her rhythm up, trying to maintain the pressure she was putting on the bandit. She could see the various small knicks and cuts she was causing, the tip of her blade wearing down his health bar slowly over time. Determined not to relent, she kept the blade slamming against him, watching as each little bit cut further and further towards victory for herself. A small sliver of orange remained, and Nymoria suddenly threw herself forwards, jamming the blade into his shoulder and watching as the remainder of the health bar disappeared, followed by the form of the bandit as it shattered into shards that settled towards the ground. Breathing heavily, she fell back against the wall of the hallway, checking herself over and confirming that she was, for the moment, okay. She felt herself giggle slightly, the enthusiasm from the fight's success taking over her otherwise tired form. See? If I just take it one at a time...I'll be okay. Just three more, and then the leader...and then maybe I can get the kid out and back to his mother...almost done here. Saying it in her head made it feel like she was trul halfway there, and she found herself pushing up off the wall as she glanced around at her newfound area. Nymoria 0 Posted August 2 Author #26 Share Posted August 2 Nymoria leaned back against the wall of the keep, her eyes staring up at the ceiling above her. She could still feel her breath coming in harsher than before the fight, although it was much calmer than the following her conflict in the underground tunnel. She focused on regulating her breathing, trying to calm herself and control the air moving into and out of her form. She was pleasantly surprised to find that she wasn't aching in any way - as hard as the combat was, her body seemed to have become more well adjusted to the work, and wasn't burning like it used to do when she'd first begun the game. It seems that as we continue to grow and advance, so do our various muscles and related aspects. Nice to know. The smile that flitted across her face was one mixed with exhaustion and pride; she'd come a long way, but still had a long way to go. She knew that, and while she didn't want to downplay her success in any way, she also didn't want to over compensate by making herself too confident. She was still in danger here, until she could focus on bringing down her opponents steadily. I'm still struggling slightly, although maybe not as much as I was before...still, it would be nice to be able to just breeze through here... She knew there were various consumables that she could use to make it easier, in fact she had one sitting in her inventory that she'd been given. Her eyes lingered over the area where the menu would appear if she twisted her hand correctly, considering the item in question. It was tempting to try it out, to take the power it offered and push through the keep. But she knew that wouldn't benefit her as much as forcing herself to come to terms with her regular capabilities - capabilities which weren't enhanced into overdrive through the various items found within the world of Aincrad. Nymoria’s mind wandered as she leaned against the wall, trying to recover the various ounces of energy that she had lost in her most recent fight. Her health bar had been slowly ticking upwards, recovering naturally now that she was out of combat entirely. It seems like no one has lived here, or at least no one has resided within it for some time. Lines of dust specked the various areas of ledges and outcroppings that Nymoria could see nearby, small traces of disturbances from her own recent engagement within the basement area. Piles of assorted junk lay around, none of it appearing to have been handled in recently times; left to the dredges of time to lie until it was found once more. She considered glancing through them for a brief moment, before realising there was no real need to do so; anything of value wouldn’t be obvious to her, unless the system specifically pointed it out. Besides, if there was anything valuable, Musei would’ve found it by now. No…I just need to keep focused on the goal at hand. Finding this boy, and getting out of here. She felt herself sigh at the remembrance that she still had so far to go – she’d barely entered the keep, and already she was struggling to push forwards. It was just another stark reminder on top of all the others that she still had quite a ways to go before she would be ready to face the frontlines; to fight among those who were clearing the way towards freedom and the real world once more. I mean, who wants the deaf girl that you can’t talk to in your party? The voice scowled within her head, the consistent negativity that had resided away for some time now returning in force. Nymoria felt herself shake suddenly, a chill passing over her as she fought against the distraught that it brought with it. I mean, really. Barely a capable swordswoman, no real major skills…it’s not like you can do anything valuable that ten others can’t do. You’d be no real boost to their forces. Why would you think anything but that, stonedeaf? The name was one she had received during her earlier years of middle school, one which she had hated but never spoken out against. She’d always simply smiled, accepting that people were just put off by her disability – an irregularity in a world that focused so heavily on the regular, the need to be normal. Nymoria had never once become upset about it, never screamed or yelled or asked them not to call her that; too afraid that she would cause even more abuse and hurtfulness. Instead, she had simply smiled and pretended it hadn’t been said, keeping her tears inside until she had returned home. To hear it come from her own mind, however, caused those tears to find their way back to her eyes. No. No I won’t ever call myself that. Not ever. I’m…I’m better than that! Although there was no real power behind her thoughts, Nymoria heard no further negative thoughts, the aura seemingly leaving her alone for the time being. Shaken, uncomfortable and unable to pass off the way that she felt now, she forced herself away from the wall as she noticed her health and energy had returned in full. Good. Time to focus on finding this child, and return back to the town. Next time, before I head out, I’m going to pick up a bunch of consumables and stuff that I can use. I was stupid for not already doing that… She passed around another corner, finding a stairway leading upwards. The remainder of the basement was barren, the few rooms she’d seen shooting off of the main area empty of anything valuable. Sighing, she decided there was nothing better to do beyond heading up into the main floor of the keep, and hopefully finding her objective up top. Link to post Share on other sites
Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #29 Share Posted August 4 The main floor was larger, various hallways and rooms branching off from the area she had found herself within once she had left the basement behind. It had appeared to be some sort of alcove, at least as far as Nymoria could tell, no real purpose behind it other than heading into the basement proper. She’d carefully exited, her sabre in hand and a soft step beneath her footfalls as she spied the area and confirmed no one was waiting for her. The first few rooms she’d checked had turned up barren, no signs of any life or anyone having passed through them recently. Slightly frustrated, she had pushed on to the next area – beyond a kitchen that had seen no recent use and into the doorway of what was obviously a large dining hall. It was here that she had come to a halt as she considered the scene before her. A pair of guards lounged inside, a boy settled on the stairs just behind them – closer to Nymoria than the guards were. His appearance, although dishevelled, seemed similar to the woman that Nymoria had been accosted by at the start of the quest; a fair sign to her that she had found the individual she’d been sent to retrieve. She glanced at the two guards again, both dressed similarly to the previous bandits she had fought. No others were within the dining area, although Nymoria could see a pair of closed doors on it’s far side. Either way, I need to get through them in order to get this boy free. There’s no other ways around…so this is going to end in a fight one way or another. Maybe if I can take them by surprise… It was the best thing she could do, given the circumstances. Readying herself, she took three deep breaths before rushing out of the doorway she’d been hiding within, launching herself down the few steps and directly at the guards. Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #30 Share Posted August 4 The bandits were taken entirely by surprise by Nymoria’s sudden rush into the fray. No sooner had her blade connected with the first, than it had passed onto the next with ease. The two bandits locked up in place, giving her the space she needed to pull back and usher the boy towards the kitchen that she had just come from, her hands moving even as she did so. Head back that way, stay out of the way. There’s no bad people there, but I need to bring these two down before we can look at escaping. Stay hidden. She didn’t have time to confirm whether her fast hand movements were understood by the NPC or not, instead giving him a harsh push before turning back to face the pair of bandits who were slowly coming out of their stunned hold. She gave a sharp twist of her blade, readying herself as they prepared to rush forwards, her sabre held aloft in front of her in a soft guard, ready to parry either of the longswords away from her when they reached her. A quick glance to the side confirmed that the boy had retreated for the time being, although Nymoria didn’t have a chance to confirm just how far away he had gotten. Instead, she turned her focus back towards the approaching pair of bandits, sliding into motion as their blades began to descend towards her form. Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #31 Share Posted August 4 Her blade sunk into the shoulder of one bandit before she pulled it outwards and sliced the face of the second one, her momentum carrying her through and past the two, back into the centre of the dining hall. The large open area gave her the advantage of being able to maneuver without worry of being hindered, a form of fighting that came naturally to her as she danced about and dodged the more brutal forms of slashing that the bandits preferred. It still wasn’t enough, however, as the first blade caught her leg and sent her slamming into the ground, the second bandit coming in with a strong overhand slash against her chest as she rolled to her side. She lashed out with the thin blade in her hand, managing to drive both of them backwards, giving her the space she needed to rise back onto her feet. Her eyes glanced quickly at her health bar and the energy next to it, before leaping back into action. Not dead yet. Doing better than last time, I think. Let’s just…keep this pace up. She could feel the burn on her muscles as she danced around the dining hall once more, trading soft strikes with the weapons of the bandits as she watched for her opening. She could feel herself tensing, keeping up the rhythm of movement and strike drawing something from her that she didn’t know she had. There! Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #32 Share Posted August 4 The pair of longswords swung around at the same moment, striking Nymoria in the gut and throwing her backwards across the dining hall. She landed roughly on her feet, her breath coming in harshly as she checked herself over quickly and confirmed that she was, for the moment, still alive. How much longer would be the question, considering how much damage their strikes had done. She considered her options even as the pair of them split and attempted to come at her from either side. It would be simple to try and down yet another health potion, but Nymoria knew it would be pointless. The only thing keeping her alive now, was to rush her attack against the pair, and hope to bring down at least one of them – or both, if she was truly lucky. Gritting her teeth, she gave a quick swish with her blade before rushing forwards and lunging at the pair of bandits, the weapon slashing through the air before them in order to drive them backwards. She knew it was a desperate gamble, but she figured that she could bring down at least one of them – then she would simply have to focus her energy into dropping the second, if she wasn’t able to connect with both. Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #33 Share Posted August 4 She released a slow breath as the bandits disappeared from sight, their shards scattering onto the ground before disappearing entirely from existence. It had been a close fight – the quick glance she’d just given her health bar made Nymoria wince a little, before she looked away. She had taken a serious risk, and although it had paid off this time, it wouldn’t be wise to attempt it again without good reason. She settled against the stairs, leaning back and sighing heavily as she let her muscles loosen. She wanted nothing more than to be done with the quest now, her body having taken more of a beating than she was used to – and it was becoming clear that she didn’t enjoy it in the slightest. Well, I’ve found the kid, now I just need to- The thought stopped as she realised the boy wasn’t anywhere nearby, her having sent him back into the kitchen for safety. A slight panic rose in her as she wondered if she had missed another of the bandits, and she found herself rolling to her feet before dashing up the few steps and into the kitchen itself, her eyes casting around the area. There was no movement within the kitchen, and Nymoria cursed herself for sending him out of her sight. She could have at least kept him within the dining room – the bandits likely wouldn’t have attacked him, if she had stayed between him and them. So long as he hadn’t done anything silly, it would’ve been more than safe, rather than sending him back into a relatively unknown area, which she had only quickly cleared. Now I’m stuck searching for him, and hoping that he hasn’t entirely disappeared or left…or worse. She didn’t like the thought, although a part of her knew that if he were dead then the quest would’ve ended already, announcing her failure. Link to post Share on other sites
Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #34 Share Posted August 4 Stupid! I had him right there! It was moments like these where Nymoria wished she wasn’t disabled. She could’ve, if she weren’t broken, called out to him and located him through the sound of her voice. Now, she was stuck thrashing through the various areas trying to locate his hiding spot, and hoping that no one else had already caught him – or heard the ruckus she was making and came to investigate. She harshly grabbed a nearby door, yanking it open in what was likely an extremely loud and aggressive manner, before glancing into what was clearly a small pantry. She almost squeaked in delight as she spotted the boy within, his figure trying desperately to hide behind a sack of potatoes that was far, far too small to successfully keep him from sight. Leaning up against the door, she decided to wait for his eyes to peak over the sack and see what had changed, knowing that if she approached to touch him and get his attention, that she would be putting herself in an amount of danger that she wasn’t willing to face. Last thing I need is to accidentally get into a fight with the NPC I was sent to rescue. Better to wait it out, and have him notice me…so that I can signal him to come out. She growled to herself again, realising it was just another limitation she had that many other players didn’t have to deal with. Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #35 Share Posted August 4 The boy was clearly more of a coward than Nymoria wanted to give him credit for, with full minutes passing before he decided to glance up and see why light had suddenly filtered into his hiding place. Nymoria jumped on the opportunity, her hands moving the moment his eyes had appeared, drawing them in and focusing them on her. Hush, there’s still guards around. I’m here to help you, your mother sent me. I’m going to get you out of here, and back home. He gave a quick jerk of his head, a somewhat ambiguous sign that Nymoria took to mean that he understood her meaning at least. Holding up a hand to signal him to wait for the moment, she moved back into the kitchen, glancing around as she considered the best possible route out of the keep. She figured that there were more guards around, likely patrolling for any dangers that may be making their way into the home base of whatever gang had taken up residence here. Not that they’re doing the best job, yet. Although I guess I can’t give them too little credit. She made her way back to the dining hall, glancing it over and taking into focus the fact that it was still empty. She’d been thinking about taking the pair of them back through the tunnels, seeing as she’d already cleared the way, and the emptiness of the dining just cemented that idea for her. Somehow it’s void of bodies made it feel unwelcoming, as if a collection of dangers lay beyond and outside, just waiting for her and the boy to approach so that they could face her. Maybe it would be better to head back the way I came from, after all. Her decision made, Nymoria turned back to pass through the kitchen into the hallway she had originally taken. A flicker of movement caught her eye just as she was coming up to the door, her own momentum too strong to suddenly stop as the figure passed through and into the room; the bandit stopping on the spot and staring at her before dropping its halberd into an aggressive hold. Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #36 Share Posted August 4 Nymoria had little time to react as the halberd lowered, barely getting her own blade up as the weapon’s tip came striking towards her. She managed to deflect it down and into the countertop of a nearby island. Stepping forward she brought her own sabre up to slash into the individual, driven back as the haft of the halberd slammed into the side of her, doing no damage but pushing her away as she contorted around its shape. Stepping backwards, she moved around the island to put space between her and the bandit, desiring time to consider a course of action. The plan was, however, thrown into array as the tip once more stabbed out at her – the polearm more than capable of reaching beyond the island and towards Nymoria. Realising her mistake, she instead lunged across the island and towards the wielder, slashing out as she spotted the shift of the weapons haft once more. Knowing what was coming she ducked underneath the bandit’s attempt to hit her with the haft, bringing her sabre up and around in an attempt to slash the shins of the bandit in retaliation. Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #37 Share Posted August 4 Her wild strike was more than enough to cause the bandit to freeze in place, the halberd held out at an awkward angle as all of the muscles within their body locked up. Nymoria almost felt a moment of pity for the bandit, before remembering that they were trying to kill her, as much as she was working to kill them. Shrugging it off, she began to move around the island, taking her time and care to move without rush or inattention. I just need to finish this one off quickly, and then we can look at getting out of here. I guess we won’t be going back the way we came, though. Her eyes had shifted towards the doorway through which she had first found the kitchen, coming to terms with the fact that the bandit themselves had come from that direction. It reminded Nymoria that there were still likely more of them within the keep, and that they needed to head forwards in order to get out, rather than backwards. As much as she hated the idea, she knew there was nothing she could do about it now. For now, just focus on the fight. She shifted her grip slightly on the sabre, stepping forward towards the bandit in order to take advantage of the fact that they were still locked in place. It would benefit her more, now, to put them down and move on with the boy, than to hang around here and potential run into more of the bandits as time passed. She no longer had the opportunity to take things slowly, especially with how many of the gang she had already put down – raised alarms would only bring more of them, and make her chances of completing the quest that much more unlikely. Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #38 Share Posted August 4 The sudden shift of motion caught Nymoria’s attention just as she was preparing to strike out at the bandit, their surprise attack planned poorly in comparison to Nymoria’s ability to react. Leaping backwards she dodged the shift of the halberd’s haft, the blow aimed once more for her stomach. Her own attack forgone, she instead focused on keeping distance between the two of them, leaping behind another counter as the halberd lashed out in an attempt to use the distance to its advantage. Nymoria knew that if she continued to keep space between them she would be at a severe disadvantage, but she also wanted time to think and consider her attack approach. She didn’t have the experience required to overwhelm her opponent – she was quick, sure, but the bandit seemed well versed in their own weaponry style, and more than a match for Nymoria up close or far away. She shifted around again, forcing the bandit to push further to the left side of the kitchen, hoping to trap their weapon against the wall in a desperate attempt to find some sort of leverage. Either the bandit didn’t realise Nymoria’s plan, or they were confident in their ability to overcome the limitations, each step bringing them closer and closer to the wall on the far side. Nymoria pushed forward, driving herself closer to the bandit as she attempted to close the distance that had been slowly opening between them, hoping to get in close enough to at least put the bladed end of the halberd out of commission for the moment. Nymoria 0 Posted August 4 Author #39 Share Posted August 4 Her feint worked, and as she pushed in closer to the bandit, driving the polearm down onto the floor and slammed the pommel of her blade across the bandit’s face, Nymoria felt a moment of satisfaction at her success. It quickly disappeared as she shifted backwards slightly to avoid the retaliatory headbutt that was aimed at her face, sliding around the right side of the bandit and driving the flat of her blade into the side of the bandit’s torso. The recoil was enough to give Nymoria the opening she needed, pulling the blade slightly she twisted it so that the sharpened edge cut into the bandit’s side, before disengaging and putting space between her and the bandit once more. Nymoria didn’t let her success sink in, instead launching back into a flurry of attacks meant to put pressure upon the bandit, who could only use the haft of their weapon in order to deflect the assault. I’m almost done. They’re a lot easier by themselves. She felt a small bout of surprise at the thought, the realisation almost stark against the reality. As soon as there were a pair of them, she’d become overwhelmed – not a good sign, considering she had wanted to focus on the area attacks. Musei had scoured the area, procuring items that Nymoria had originally missed during her quick scan of the kitchen area. Taking only a few seconds to catch herself, she moved back to the storage closet that she had left the boy in, confirming with a glance that he was still hidden behind the sack. This time, however, his eyes peered out, waiting for her return. Come on, we need to leave. More guards will come soon. We’re going out the front door, follow me. Whatever you do, don’t attract attention unnecessarily. He gave a quick nod, before collecting himself and exiting the closet. Nymoria noticed for the first time that he was a full head taller than her, and well built. She paused, realising it would be hard to continue calling him a boy, considering the image before her. The voice sounded squeaky and high to Nymoria’s senses, and not for the first time she was thankful that her hearing wasn’t strong enough to be assailed by the noises.
