Hanzoku

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

-- John 15:13

Hanzoku has brown hair that he keeps short, letting it grow out and then cutting it back when it starts to annoy him. He has a near-perpetual five o'clock shadow that no amount of shaving can remove. Older than many of the other players, he is a veteran RPG player and MMO player, and applies his experience in other games to the one he now finds himself trapped in.

Having served as his guild's main tank in WoWoW III, he likewise here has gravitated to heavy armor and a sword and shield. When he doesn't need to tank, he switches to using a katana as he cuts loose.

HISTORY

  Hide contents

James is a life-long gamer, both of the board and virtual variety. As World of World of Warcraft III was winding down operations, he heard rumors of Sword Art Online and applied to beta- test, though he failed to make the cut. He thought his luck had turned when his long-time guildmate and Japanese friend Abe scored two slots in the opening ten thousand players for game day and offered the other slot to him.

Taking a week vacation to Japan, the two of them  had eagerly logged in and spent the first day wandering the Town of Beginnings. When the trap was sprung and they were locked into the death game, he was initially optimistic that they would shortly be freed.

But he had underestimated the twisted genius of Akihiko Kayaba, and as days passed they realized that there would be no outside assistance. The two joined the initial rush of players venturing out into the world, but quickly ran afoul of the foul-tempered boars outside town. Getting in over their heads, Abe was killed, while James survived.

He limped back into town and fell into a deep depression. Years passed as he became little more than another NPC in the eyes of other players. His fortieth birthday came and went, and he realized that if he ever wanted to escape the game, he would need to do his part. Mustering his courage, he stepped forward once more - older, sadder and hopefully a bit wiser, he puts himself on the front lines to protect everyone who like him, needed time to find their own spark to rise.

VIRTUES&FLAWS

  Hide contents

Virtues:

Solid - Hanzoku is a reliable teammate and is quick to support others and doesn't back down easily. A veteran tank, he’s used to swarms of monsters or oversized raid bosses and doesn’t panic in a fight. He might not do the right thing in a pinch, but he’ll certainly do something.

Generous - Only by improving everyone can we get ahead. He doesn't fight over loot, looking to what is the largest improvement to the team. This extends to acts of charity to civilians. He has a soft spot for the youngest players in the orphanage.

Athletic - Athletic out of the game, he is always one of the first to step forward when something physical needs doing. He uses his athleticism for humor as well, showing off in good fun when he lifts something improbable. He can come across as a bit of a meathead as he insists on exercising even though its unneeded.

Flaws:

Dogmatic - He tends to think the game world of SAO should follow the rules of AD&D or WoW, and tends to use terms from those systems to describe the one he's currently in. This can cause confusion with other players, as Hanzoku has trouble adapting. This most often comes out in combat as he drops into old raiding habits.

Morbid - Having already lost a RL friend in the system and come to terms with being trapped in a death game, his sense of humor is more than a little morbid. His jokes tend to be dark, and he’ll face certain death with a joke on his lips. He obviously isn’t fully over the loss of his best friend.

Blunt - He doesn't always pick the best way to phrase things and can offend others with his opinion. People say they appreciate bluntness, but not when its turned their way. He doesn’t make many friends this way, but counts it small loss.

NPCs and/or AIs

Sin(dragosa) - a voice that talked to him through the Demonic Shard he found during his first <<Earning a Living>> quest. May or may not be a hallucination, or one of the system AIs taking an interest in him. He taught her to repeat famous lines from boss fights.

Story So Far:

Having awakened from his long fugue, Hanzoku has started working to make himself ready for the front lines. He takes advantage of the generosity of those who outfit new players to gain equipment, before embarking on his first quest. He forms a group with Nymoria, Foyle and Kingsley to tackle one of the games' earliest quests, working on profession quests on his own in the group's downtime. With those quests under his belt, he opens a small shop in the slums of the Town of Beginnings, though it is unfrequented.

While he was learning the <<Forager>> skill, he found a Demonic Shard that actually started interacting with him. He names the shard Sindragosa, having bullied it into learning to shout quotes from famous bosses from WoWoW III. Whether the Shard is truly an AI reaching out for contact or a sign that he has become delusional is an open question.

More comfortable with his skills, he starts venturing onto the eighth floor in search of materials and hoped-for shards and scales. At the same time, he has begun taking lessons at the Shirajishi-ryu Dojo on Floor 22 and seeking out a renowned martial artist as he seeks to refine his fighting style and learn to fight independently of the Sword Art system's guidence.
