Fielding The Front
[T2 Lock Down]

Quote

The stage was set for the next floor boss raid to begin, and in it's wake came the rush of activity known as "boss rushes".  On the many floors of our castle Aincrad, there exist beings of great power and greater renown.  Monsters that, at one point, were confined to dungeons and quests as boss monsters.  However, after the Dark Tide, these creatures have broken loose from their captivities and now roam the lands of their respective floors.  They prey upon those that find themselves venturing into their rather large territories, forcing their stats to plummet just from entering their radius.  Though, that does not mean to avoid them, as they hold treasures that are not easily obtainable outside of their demise.

These are <<FIELD BOSSES>>

Be warned, travelers!  Though they may have treasure beyond one's understanding; it is in good faith to respect the power that comes with these majestic creatures.  For in this game, one should not tread lightly into the domain of the beasts.  If you wish to join in the fight and procure the treasure from these bosses, then join us.

As the jade haired individual looked upon the poster that he slapped up, he sighed heavily.  There wasn't any good way to do this, but his hunter for hire posters were all but expired, and heavily useless.  He wasn't a proper hunter anymore, just a healer that could keep people alive in most senses.  His overall appearance didn't help in that manner either, as his main set of armor was made to look like a great knight, or something.  He couldn't even use sword arts anymore, except maybe the more useless ones.

"And they wanted to put these things up."

Looking beyond, he wasn't alone in this venture.  Another player that he had gotten to raid with, but never really associated with.

" @Morningstar!  How's it going on your end?  Get anyone to come around?"

Morningstar looked up from his messages. "I've got one," he replied. "It'll be his first raid. He'll need to bump up his level a bit before game day."

He typed out a string of coordinates for Wulfrin to follow and hit send. Star recalled the pressure of the days leading up to the raid and wondered if his friend was experiencing the same. He was reliable, and a good man, but his numbers weren't yet favorable. They'd need to whip him into shape.

Star wandered over to Hirru, looking over the list they had put together. "Hellfire's popular. I'm thinking we start there and see how much daylight's left. Any luck with your postings?"

For efficiency's sake, they needed a fourth. Six sounded better, but groups had already formed throughout the floors and the number of available frontliners was dwindling. They would need to dig deep if they were going to find anyone. He sent messages to NIGHT and Freyd, and tried not to be offended when they told him they'd built a team without him. Nari declined, lacking the free time to join them, and there was no word from Rebekah. His pool was running dry.

"Hey Morningstar," Wulfrin greeted his mentor with a smile. "Been trying to power level as best I can since I saw the Lab boss was defeated. With any luck I'll be ready to join up for the Floor Boss Raid. In the mean time though, I'll help in anyway I can to gather resources the needed for the party." He gave a firm salute like a soldier reporting for duty to a commanding officer. His small statured phoenix familiar, Solaris circled in the air above him.

"I don't think we've met," Wulfrin held out a hand to the unfamiliar player with jade hair. "Name's Wulfrin. I guess I'm Star's plus one for this little boss rush. I'm a Straight Sword user with a focus on damage output. I look forward to working together."

"Will it just be the three of us or are we expecting someone else," Wulfrin turned his attention to their surroundings, scanning for any other players heading their way. "Also what all are we hunting?"

a poster?

"out of the way."

she'd brushed a curious witness aside, hand on their shoulder, pushing herself forward. something on it in capital text highlighted some sort of strange importance, especially when it was put up by an individual that looked nothing like the average serf. in fact, to put it lightly, it seemed like an odd number of stronger individuals had congregated for one reason or another.

field bosses, it read.

nian had stolen the kill of one before.

before this, it had been an ordinary day. nian rarely decided to don her business suit in town -- it commanded attention, and amongst the rabble it would be too much. so a red shirt and slacks with that (un)notorious cap would be enough. it was anyone's guess if she'd just woken up from a nap or otherwise.

"hellfire's popular," one of them had said. and how strange to think that they were recruiting publicly for something known to be so dangerous. nian stared at the poster, hands in her pockets, expression bordering on irritation for several beats before glancing over to the players around it.

then, she pulled out her own hellfire and bounced it in her hand. "are you numbskulls talking about this?"

"it was easy," she recited, partly through gritted teeth. lying was way easier when you looked the part. "i'd practically solo-ed it. what's the big deal?"

"Pretty sure that Phoenix is gonna take us quite a while.  Not that it's gonna be hard, but it comes back after death.  We'll be fighting twice as hard, to get multiple of these things."

Freyd had sent them a list of field bosses that were around specific tiers to hunt.  The ones that they were going for were the tier two based field bosses, which was mainly why the hunter was here.  He needed a few more of the Wicked Woods barrier.  Though, that was only for him, there were other buffs that were out there they could get.  Hellfire was definitely one of the few that came in handy in the last boss raid.  Hirru could only sigh silently to not let on how much he missed being able to fight.

The one that Morning was talking about seemed to walk in on them then.  A disciplined individual, which made the jade haired hunter smirk.  It reminded him of the days of KoB.  Mack and Opal would have liked this one.  The hunter grasped their hand with their heavy gauntlet.  Although he probably didn't need it, the presence of the holy armor was becoming part of him.  Paladin, or so someone said.

"Jade Hunter, Hirru!  Glad to make your acquaintance.  If you're joining us, we'll be.."

Just as he was about to explain what they were doing on the ninth floor, a rather rough around the edges player interrupted him.  They seemed to have some experience with one of the field bosses they'll be facing today.  The hunter nodded.

"Indeed, that would be one of them.  If you're as experienced as you say, we'll be doing more than just Phoenix hunts."

The hunter looked over to Wulfrin's familiar.

"Not yours, of course."

Back to the newer player, he would nod to them.

"It would be a worthwhile endeavor, if you wish to join us."

Morningstar raised a brow at the newcomer. He didn't recognize her; she wasn't a frontliner, as far as he knew, and she didn't look particularly strong. Looks could be deceiving, though. "Make your choice," Star told her. "We should head out now. We're losing daylight."

-----

He had killed the Phoenix once, before the previous boss fight, alongside members of his raid party. He could remember the general vicinity it spawned in, and thankfully it took them little time to locate it. He cleared his throat. "I don't think an extensive strategy is necessary, but don't fight too recklessly. Hirru's good, but even he's got a limit."

He sent a smirk in Nian's direction. He was curious to see if she would live up to her hype. He wanted to say something clever but the angel on his shoulder told him "no."

Taking aggro, Morningstar b-lined towards the bird. His attack was quicker than it could react, and he caught it with strike to the center. Paralysis coursed through it, shutting down its limbs like a virus.

"I'm never reckless Star," Wulfrin smirked as he charged into battle on The Lightbringer's heels.

Like a well trained duo, Wulfrin and his familiar danced around the larger phoenix. Both of them had something to prove. Wulfrin was proving not just to the other players present, but to himself as well that he could play in the big leagues. Solaris wanted to prove they were the superior flaming mythological bird. In tandem the two struck towards the bird's head, Wulfrin throwing off the stunned beast's aim and Solaris putting on the damage over time with his rend. Wulfrin's delaying strike left some residual damage of its own in the form of a deep bleeding wound. Wolf's Bite had lived up to its name yet again. Wulfrin landed gracefully at the end of his combo and left the floor open to the next combatant.

"Nice and clean opening," Wulfrin said preparing for his next attack. "Nice and large opening for for whoever wants the next swing."

in the same way that star had questioned her, so too did she narrow her eyes at the group. the hell was this? peer pressure? nian didn't play well in dynamics as such -- honestly, she'd expected them to just move on from the post without batting an eye.

so finding herself on the ninth with them was something she couldn't exactly attest to expecting. a varsity jacket was the closest thing she'd put on to armor that day besides strength. the player did eye the party's movements as they strode up to where the field boss was located -- supposedly -- and charged in as though they hadn't a second thought.

this time, the emperor needed a moment to think.

nian snarled. when she rushed in as well, it was the opportunity cost to end the fight sooner that leant reason to her strike. and here she'd expected to put on a show to begin with. maybe the fate's hand this day was for her to take it slow?

There wasn't much to it.  They were already on the burning, coursing, heat death that was the ninth floor.  Phoenix wasn't even an issue to find, as Morning had the tracking capabilities to find the beast.  The players before him looked to be ready for an onslaught, though that was only one of them.  The other one that came to them in, what could only be stated as, arrogance?  If they had taken care of the field boss here before, then there was no reason to doubt their strength.  More so, he and Morning were there to take care of anything that happened during the hunts.  It was only unfortunate that he couldn't give his food to the growing players, but his Gungnir was made for the front liner in mind.  He would just have to keep them safe.

Though, that's what he thought until he saw them in action.  Morning, he had already seen in action and could attest to his battle prowess.  Wulfrin seemed to be following along well, but it would seem he still should look into coordinating arts.  Delay is a fine debuff, but doesn't help against a stunned/paralyzed foe.  The arrogant one, though, was slapping out some raw damage.  Though the art, he could see, was definitely something that would work better on groups of mobs, instead of a singular enemy.  Hirru smirked.

We're gonna have some good ones, guys..

"Keep up the pressure!  We've still got a quarter and some left! Coordinate arts that don't clash, so we're not wasting energy."

He would say as a yellow light would encircle his arm, but would shortly fall over to the arrogant fighter.  The tactician in him started to speak more.

"Don't drain yourself from too many of your strongest arts.  You may never know when you can properly take a break."

He was more or less familiar with Wulfrin's capabilities, but their new recruit remained a mystery to him. He was pleasantly surprised to see that she at least knew how to use her weapons.

Claws. He had never seen them before—not in use, anyway. He knew they existed, but they weren't popular among the masses. Maybe it was the range disadvantage, like daggers. The aesthetic was cool, so it couldn't have been their appearance.

He listened to their strategist and alternated sword arts, even if it only reduced his energy usage by a sliver. The phoenix burned up as Star slashed through it, falling to a pile of ash on the ground.

"One of you got him? He'll pop back up in a sec. Get ready."

It did just that. The ashy pile began to sparkle with embers, erupting into flames as the ashborn creature respawned. It let out a screech, its health replenished and its damage increased.

If only I had more arts to coordinate with.

Wulfrin shook his head to clear the negative thoughts that would impede his battle focus. It was a neat little trick he had picked up fighting The Gemini. Wulfrin wasn't necessarily using the skill he had acquired, but the encounter had taught him to keep his head in the game. As The Phoenix burst back to life from it's ashes, Wulfrin noticed its debuffs remained. As if by happen stance, he had also set himself up for a massive blow using Nova Ascension. He charged forward, his blade shining a brilliant crimson as he raked it across the boss's body in multiple strikes eventually forcing its HP down to 0.

Wulfrin landed and almost lost his footing briefly before catching himself as the Phoenix burst into fractal motes of light. I really got to work on those landings.

"Well that's one down," Wulfrin said to the group trying to pull attention away from his near fall. "If we're planning on farming this thing we may want to come up with something else to do while its respawn timer ticks down. I have a dungeon map if that's something we want to do."

The field boss was not long for life, nor rebirth.  That is just how the battle goes against some of these lower tiered bosses.  Enough firepower could easily burn through them, but that could also be the players downfall.  As the Phoenix's death cries faded with its crystalline shattering, their rewards would be brought up.  Each one of them would gain a Hellfire consumable, meaning they had farmed 4 consumables.  There was a slight issue though.

The group was made up of only three that would probably be part of the front.

If Morning was vouching for and had invited Wulfrin himself, then it could be said that he would be a high enough level to join them on the front.  The other one though, this arrogant one.  They may have the skills, but it felt that their energy usage to maximum energy didn't add up.  At least, not to someone that was a high enough level.  Still, if players are as they are, then they would probably not be willing to relinquish the hellfire consumables they gained to the front.  It wasn't proper to question, but it was rational to understand.  In total, they made 4, but in reality the front will probably only get 3.  Taking out a little bronze tube.  He would break out his searching skill to magnify his viewing capabilities.  Though, his search was really only for his spatial awareness, not fine tuned awareness.

"Let's not waste too much time.  If your energy reserves are in question, then we can hold on for a moment.  Remember though, breaks aren't always found when needed."

His hand would come aglow of yellow before fading without a proper target.  It was unfortunate, but he couldn't target himself.  Not that it would help.

"I can keep you going for as long as needed, but I am finite as well."

Star stuck his sword into the ground and leaned up against a craggy magma rock. Hirru made a good point. Their list of field bosses was long and the hunter had his own stamina to worry about. He peered at his energy bar. He had more than enough for a few more rounds. It was Nian's that they needed to worry about. Her level was lower than the rest, and that meant her energy supply was smaller too. He estimated that she would have plenty for the next Phoenix that spawned, but beyond that he couldn't count that she'd have any left over. She had impressed him, though. Behind her rough exterior, she wasn't such a bad fighter.

"Hey, Wolverine. Nice work," he said to Nian, his arms crossed. "Call me pleasantly surprised. Need a break or are you ready to go? Next Phoenix'll be spawning in..." he glanced at his watchless wrist. "A bit."

she'd been poised to take down the phoenix if need be, right as it pulled itself from the ashes in a brilliant inferno. not that it mattered, given its destruction at the hands of one of the other players. the withdrawal of strength came with the creak of metal and a sigh.

when she was spoken to, nian figured today was a day she was playing mercenary. again. she avoided turning her head much, her weight on her weapons to hold her upright as the man checked a hypothetical time. wolverine, like the marvel movies? the comparison sailed right past her head, and she shot the blond a puzzled look. "won't need a full bar," was all she said, before glancing to the man in the red coat. if there were other targets, her bluff wouldn't hold up -- but with all things considered, nian could always turn tail and run.

it's not as though she hadn't done it before.

"I should be good to go," Wulfrin said as he took a breather on a bit of rock nearby. "I'd like a chance to recharge if we have the time. If not guess we ball with the hands we're dealt."

Solaris fluttered down and began to bathe in a nearby lava pool. The idea of bringing a small phoenix to take on a much larger field boss of a phoenix kind of made Wulfrin chuckle a bit. He had assumed Solaris was the only one of his kind, and he very well could be. The only resemblance Solaris and the field boss shared was the fact they were both flaming birds. The field boss was much more terrifying than his familiar.

"Is there anything else on the agenda?" Wulfrin asked turning his attention back to his party. "Like are we planning to just farm the phoenix or do we have more targets on our list? The postings were kind of vague on the gameplan front."

  • 2 weeks later...

"Well.."

Pulling out the message from Mina, he looked at the list of things that they needed from the 2nd tier field bosses.  There were quite a few, but mostly the hellfire was needed for now.  He did want to go up to the eleventh floor, but would be up to the group.  That, and they had several other bosses on several other floors to get to.  In fact, the list was mostly on the T2 groups part.

"..We just got roughly four from that.  Depending on certain things, we may need to kill it a couple more times.  That's just the main target.  We also got..."

A long pause before while reading the list.

"..one fight on the seventh floor.  One on the eighth.  I would prefer two attempts on the 11th floor, but that's my own request.  One fight against the 12th floor's boss.  An attempt on the 13th and 14th.."

As he continued, the droning of his voice could be heard before the screeching and flames erupted a short way from them.

"And that's about it.  Oh!  Just in time too."

He pointed towards the newly spawned Phoenix's new location, which was not too far from them.

As if timed to the conclusion of Hirru's informative rundown, the phoenix respawned. The pile of ashes caught fire, exploding into the shape of a bird and screeching wildly at the party. Morningstar, once again, acted first. He was eager to stun the creature and stop it from acting while they pummeled it a bit. He envisioned each movement before he took it, theorizing how best he could maneuver around the bird's spitfire and white hot aura.

He thanked his quick feet as he evaded a blast of inferno, dashing straight into the creature's volley and lunging beneath it. He closed the gap between them and struck true, a sharp red line marking the spot his sword sliced through.

The phoenix sank, losing control of its motor system as his stun weaved its way through its virtual form. It crashed to the ground, flopping over in a state of lull.

Wulfrin listened to the plan intently. There was quite the shopping list and all of the bosses talked about Wulfrin had never seen let alone fought before, so needless to say he felt a little overwhelmed. He was sure it was plastered all over his face as well. Then he heard the screech of the Phoenix spawning and Hirru's call to action. His blade leveled towards the phoenix, he rushed forward and landed a well placed strike right into the beast's gizzard. The gash he left behind seemed to be deep enough that even a phoenix's healing factor couldn't stop the bleed, a sign he had hit a vital spot. Wulfrin darted backward so he was out of the line of fire. He and Star had left quite the opening in the beast's defenses. The only thing Wulfrin wish he had access to was more ways to use his Tech shift. For now though the basic sword arts would have to do.

"Another solid hit from me," Wulfrin said as he prepared to strike again. "Let's make this one fall faster than the last."

seventh and eighth. why did they start on the ninth then? with the group also meant to head to the eleventh and onwards, nian's attention faded, trying to recall the net rewards from those bosses: blessing of the wood, lightning rod, darkness salve, light of the--

as far as she knew, there wasn't a threat in aincrad worthy enough for such preparations. except...

she let the puzzle pieces slot themselves together, as the respawned phoenix burst into reality and laid waste to the ground before them. so it was *that* sort of party for such a cause. nian scoffed, holding back a laugh of distaste, before chasing the other red coats into combat.

two arms out -- the digits of her claws sank into rock, and she pivoted her linear dash to the phoenix to a side-step, skidding to a halt by the bird's flank. with luck, it was past the vanguard's initial blows that she delivered a scratch of her own. nian stayed close, teeth barred, readied for the phoenix's attempt to return from its slumber.

They didn't need any push nor any advice more than what he could have given.  They all had already defeated it once before, so the fight was nothing more than routine.  Things could happen and someone could miss a hit here or there, but experience is always better to have.  The hunter could only wish that he could join them more on the damage front, but he had his job and they had theirs.  Speaking of his job, there was a claw user that needed another pep up.

Was it always like this back when he was less experienced?  He couldn't remember having used up so much energy with his arts, but that may have just been his build.  Though, he also didn't have all of the bells and whistles that they had now.  There was always something new coming around that seemed to change how things were done.

Wonder how things would have been if we had these back then?  Would..

There was no need to think of that.  They are gone.  They are..
