Freyd 0 Posted August 6 #1 Share Posted August 6 "We've been over this a dozen times, Abdullah. You owe me favours, not the other way around. I've been keeping this bloody menace in check for months now, to your benefit. Don't try to con me into thinking I somehow need your permission, or to pay some ridiculous tithe." Arms crossed as they sat opposite each other in a lavish parlour off the main square of Fortaleza, the place was truly hard to miss. A wretched desert town surrounding with desert in every direction and constant blistering heat, the village's only remarkable feature was its reliable well. Abdullah's abode rested directly above the aquifer and he maintained a chokehold on the rest of the residents for the privilege of their continued existence. Despite his defiance, Freyd maintained a civil tone and smiling demeanor, engaging because he knew what would happen if that beast was left to its own devices for too long: some poor local kid would get eaten, and Master Abdullah would find someone other than himself to blame. "Look. I'm in town. Why don't I help you out and take care of it again while I'm here. The beast has a ridiculously short respawn cycle, and I could always use the workout." It was true that he relished the thrill and battle, but Freyd hardly needed the exercise. Constantly on the go, engaged in some clandestine mission or other, grinding through waves of mobs for loot or else field bosses for goodies, he was rarely if ever idle. Though he kept himself covered up with dark garb and his trademark cowl, and belied by his slender frame, the man was no slouch in the slightest. "Why don't I see who's around and get going? I've taken up enough of your time, already." Excusing himself, Freyd was cursing the NPC's name the moment the beaded curtains had swung closed behind him, leaving him sweltering in the sun's presence once more. "What a git," he mumbled a little too loudly. *** @Acanthus @Typhoonflame Note: CS (Shades of the Gemini) is in use. Acanthus 0 Posted August 6 #2 Share Posted August 6 (edited) I can’t believe I’ve lost my way to the market. Again. Fortaleza refused to teach Acanthus how to navigate its winding streets. She had been down here three times for various errands. And each time, against all odds, she stumbled into the wrong building. Once, she accidentally left the city lost in thought. By the time the guards were done laughing at her, they made her pay twice the usual bribe to get back in. She watched as players traveled the town in bands. Acanthus regarded them with a light sense of envy. Maybe someday, I’ll strike up a little confidence. Ask someone to party up with me. It’s certainly safer that way. But not today, she concluded. Today is a simple errand. Ink quills, and it’s right back to the shop. She eyed a nearby beaded curtain. That looks promising; I’m sure I can ask for directions there. As she approached, a player in dark garb and a cowl exploded from inside. Acanthus took two quick steps back. "What a git," he mumbled a little too loudly. Acanthus was mortified. “I am so sorry. But she took a few odd jobs here and there, to gather materials, plants, run errands...anything to get some col and experience. Her latest travels took her to a desert town, where she was forced to shield her face from the sand winds. She was here looking for some rare gems she could sell, or something similar, seeing as she was planning on setting up her own little shop and helping people in the Town of Beginnings. As she was passing by, flicking her rapier gently as she walked, she heard a guy mumble something and a girl step back, almost as if shocked. Freyd 0 Posted August 7 Author #5 Share Posted August 7 Freyd froze, his lanky body contorting at the last minute to avoid barreling into an unfamiliar red-headed woman who'd suddenly materialized in front of him. "GAH! What the...?!" Blinking twice to refocus on the right reality, his brow furrowed in frustration, but only at having let Abdullah's foppish shenanigans so distract him from his surroundings. If this had truly been an ambush by the man's thugs, it could have ended badly. "Oh. Uh... sorry? My fault. I wasn't watching." Canadian instincts were tough to break. The apology reflex was exceptionally strong, even after being away from it for so long. "Wait. Trouble? What trouble. You mean you, and this? The whole near miss thing? Nah. No trouble. But if you're thinking to head in there, I'd recommend against it. The place is infected with leeches." A touch deep on the metaphor, but apt. Framed by his cowl, the man's face wreathed in shadows revealed little save a pale complexion, simple features and a pair of mischievous yet careworn blue eyes. "Bear with me a sec, will you?" Flicking his wrist summoned a large clapboard placard into existence - the sort of thing you might have found on your boulevard advertising the local greasy spoon or pizza joint. His read: Next Shark Bait Training Program starts in 15 minutes. Splaying it out on the few stray cobblestones still visible on Fortaleza's sand swept streets, Freyd then dusted himself off with satisfaction. It took him a minute to realize he'd nearly barged into a potential candidate. Awareness was struggling to dawn today, it seemed. "Uh... I don't suppose Marv sent you, did he?" Acanthus 0 Posted August 8 #6 Share Posted August 8 1 hour ago, Freyd said: "Uh... I don't suppose Marv sent you, did he?" Acanthus paused a moment to think. “No, I don’t think I know a Marv. I’m down here to buy some materials, and well... I’m a little lost.” She sighed. “I am guessing by your comments that the shop behind you sells leeches, and that is not what I’m looking for. I may just call it a day and do some more composing back in the shop.” Just beforehand, the man in dark clothes had flicked his wrist, and a large clapboard appeared. Acanthus now eyed the announcement with curiosity. “What is ‘Shark Bait Training’? It sounds interesting.” It sounds dangerous. Acanthus, what on earth are you doing? “And you asked if someone sent me. Then, is this maybe a quest?” She looked at the clapboard one more time, and swallowed her fear. “I don’t suppose you have room for one more in the party? I’m not sure if I’m the right level, or if you already have a ‘party composition’ in mind. But if there is any space for me to tag along, I’m sure I would gain quite a bit from observing.”
Typhoonflame 0 Posted August 8 #7 Share Posted August 8 Ty blinked in surprise as the placard appeared. What kind of spell was that, did it create real plastic, or was it just an illusion? And what the hell was shark bait training? They weren't hunting sharks, right? This wasn't something that sounded right to her...or safe at all. Even though she had a weapon and more col to buy armor, she didn't trust herself to be able to handle a quest of this caliber. And yet...she found herself walking over to the two players nearby. "Um...hello. I couldn't help but overhear what you were talking about. I'm only level six, but if you could explain what this is about and such...maybe I could be of help? I'm good at paralyzing my targets!" she said proudly, even though she didn't feel as brave. This would either go incredibly well, or absolutely horribly...and it wouldn't get her the gems she needed, but perhaps it would get her more allies.
Forgotten-Ember 0 Posted August 9 #8 Share Posted August 9 “Did that say training oh that sounds lovely right about now this might be just what I was looking for” ‘Finally, a chance to leave this ridiculous cycle I've somehow found myself in’ “Would any of you mind having one more I don't have much that I'm good at yet but another pair of hands usually helps. And it is just training it can't be that dangerous right ha… who am I kidding everything here wants you dead one way or another.” He fiddled with a loose thread on his jacket, trying to appear nonchalant, though his nerves were getting the better of him. “Only you’re up for it, I know having dead weight isn't what someone wants in dangerous situations like this. But, if you think you can handle it, I’d appreciate the help.” He let out a slow breath, his shoulders slumping slightly as he waited for a response. The street seemed to grow quieter, the weight of uncertainty settling heavily on him. The training might be a beacon of hope, or it might be just another challenge in a seemingly endless series. Either way, he was ready to face whatever came next, hoping that someone would join him in taking that first step toward change.
Freyd 0 Posted August 10 Author #9 Share Posted August 10 (edited) "Oh, it doesn't so much sell leeches, as it's simply full of them," came the odd man's casual response, a wave of his hand dismissing Abdullah's establishment with disdain. Two others approached, attracted by signage or spectacle, possibly both. The Whisper had a talent for showmanship, or maybe it was just that people could always be counted on to gravitate towards a freebie. "Ah. Excellent. This will make a full group. Welcome all." Party invites appeared before Acanthus, Typhoonflame and Forgotten-Ember, to participate in a quest labeled <<Bloodstained Land>>. As a show of good faith, Freyd lowered his cowl to reveal his plain-featured face, but more notably give them each a sense of reassurance. Signing up for a quest from a man who looked like he might assassinate you wasn't a tremendously popular selling point. "This is a simple quest requiring us to slay a beast known as Terra Firma: a mutated sand shark dwelling in a nearby canyon. My name is Freyd, and I will be your tour guide this afternoon. Now, if you'll ensure that your seat backs and tray tables are in the upright and locked positions, we will be on our way." Talking while walking, Freyd led them out the main gates of Fortaleza, trudging along very familiar ground until they reached a low, sandy basin several miles away from town. The sun beat down relentlessly, though he effortlessly kept them hugging shaded areas, leaving no doubt that he'd done this many times before. "I regularly run players through this quest for two reasons. First, it's worth a heaping boatload of experience points, which really helps you find your footing. Second, there is no risk to you, provided you let me hold on to aggro. It has no area or multiplayer attacks and will stay focused entirely on the player it most hates. That needs to be me, without exception. The only risk to any of you comes if you attack before I call for it. If you pull its attention away, there is a very real chance this mob could kill you. I take it we're all on the same page?" He paused, glancing back to gauge the degree of fear in each of their faces. "Oh, and as a bonus objective, if we get lucky enough, we might unlock an extra skill for the lot of you." Coming to a halt at the edge of a large, roughly circular cliff face, the party quickly noted how it wrapped around to encircle a sandy bowl below. Swirling shifts in the sand revealed the presence of their foe, an occasional mottled brown fin cresting the surface as it moved. "Alright. Here we go. Maximum effort..." Like a meteor, Freyd dropped into the arena, not having noticed that the sand shark has leapt into the air intending to devour him whole. It was a sound tactic, and surprising from this mob, but proved a poor counter in face of a full on sword art. Instead of tasty nibbles, Terra Firma got a face full of fury-reinforced foot, right in the teeth and was smashed unceremoniously back into the sands. Landing without a sound, Freyd whistled to the rest of the group that they could move it. They were off to an auspicious start. *** Spoiler Post Action | AoE-I (x15, 11 EN, +2 shift, +2/hit): 15 EN - (Rested 2/2; Stamina) = 12 EN. Acanthus 0 Posted August 10 #10 Share Posted August 10 (edited) [You have been invited to a party by Freyd. Accept/Decline]. Last chance, Acanthus. You have no idea what you’re getting into. She looked up and saw that the man had dropped his cowl. His eyes were expressive: mischievous, but careworn. Looking at him, she couldn’t help but feel it was ok to trust him. I mean, sharks aren’t that big, right? Even if they’re mutated? As they walked out the main gates of Fortaleza, Freyd began describing the quest, and what they needed to do. Acanthus hung onto every word. She was getting a sense for how dangerous this was. One wrong move, and the shark could annihilate her. I've got to take some risks eventually, she kept telling herself. They arrived at their destination, a large cliff face overlooking the sandy bowl below. Acanthus had a hard time seeing anything going down in the bowl. But Freyd had apparently noticed something. He was on the move. "Alright. Here we go. Maximum effort..." Freyd dropped like a meteor into the arena. Acanthus' eyes bulged when she finally saw the shark. “It’s right und—” Terra Firma exploded from the ground, jaw open and barreling toward Freyd. Instead of being eaten, his boot connected soundly with the monster’s teeth, cracking a few for good measure. The shark dropped back onto the sand with a deafening rumble. Freyd landed lightly, then whistled to the group. That’s the signal! Without thinking, Acanthus lept over the edge and skidded down the cliffside. What are you doing, what are you doing, what are you doing— As her feet connected with the ground, she broke into a full sprint. “I’m on it!” She drew Wormwood in a single fluid motion and looked for a spot to strike. The legs seem less armored. I can get in and out before it gets back up. Her sword began to glow—Acanthus channeled a basic sword art and released it as she ran. But her strike was sloppy, and it bounced off the creature’s leathery hide without any effect. No luck. Not that she had expected much. The creature’s armor looked thick enough to stop a tank. Attacking the teeth was a brilliant move. Acanthus finished her charge well past the reach of the shark, and she turned to observe the battlefield. Hopefully, the others would have better luck. Typhoonflame 0 Posted August 10 #11 Share Posted August 10 (edited) When the strange guy said this would make a full group, Ty blinked. So he'd been planning to organize this, huh? Was it a death trap...It involved sharks, so maybe it was. Most things in this game were, but she needed the experience points badly. Just as she was thinking that, the apparent party leader mentioned the amount of EXP gained, and Ty grinned. This was her chance to get stronger...even if the threat of death loomed, and she swallowed. "Y-yeah, understood." she stammered when the guy mentioned how easily they could die. Way to make them uneasy...Not a great way to motivate people at all, but she supposed he was at least honest. There was also an extra skill involved, so this had to be worth it. Ty glanced at every party member, wondering what their story was and how skilled they were. She was a more supportive fighter, so she hoped they were better than her. She followed Freyd into the arena at his signal, nodding to everyone. "Come on guys, let's do this!" Even though she was beyond nervous, she struck with her rapier, hoping to damage the shark, now that it was paralyzed. However, as she was dropping down, she missed in her panic and hit her knee instead. Amazing start, Ty... Freyd 0 Posted August 11 Author #13 Share Posted August 11 (edited) An auspicious start, to be sure, but the Whisper's luck ran out swiftly this time around. His fellow players scrambled down the cliff face into the fray, each taking aim with an expected degree of difficulty. Firm Anima was no slouch. "Nice hit, uh..." he needed a moment to check the party stats, having glossed over introductions a bit for the sake of expediency. After so many, runs on this mob were starting to blur together into one gigantic shark-tooth infested melee montage. "Typhoonflame... sound like TIFF, if I think it fast enough. Apologies in advance if you don't like nicknames, but that one might stick for awhile." Whirling left, rows of serrated teeth snapped shut where the Whisper should have been, only to reappear behind Forgotten-Ember's shadow. "Sorry, my bad," the cowl offered, patting the man on the shoulder as if passing through. "Nearly forgot you were there!" The other two might have caught a whiff of grin peeking out the corners of Freyd's lips. "Keep at him. He's tough and agile - a challenging enemy. Don't give up. Even the smallest amounts of damage can make all the difference in a fight, or even a raid." Spouting encouragement as he dodged through a series of acrobatic moves, Freyd practically danced around the basin with his monstrous partner, doing his best to lead it away from the others and expose it for their benefit. Acanthus 0 Posted August 15 #14 Share Posted August 15 (edited) The beast had lumbered onto its feet, and was now eyeing Freyd with a look equal parts furious and starved. She knew he could handle himself, but couldn’t help to worry a little bit regardless. She heard Freyd’s voice in the distance, and she snapped to attention. Quote "Acanthus! Look sharp. You've got an opening." If there was an opening, she couldn’t find it. She scanned the thick, trunk-like legs. Still the same tough hide that had deflected her first blow. Maybe he’d seen something near the head? But the beast was turning away from her, and she’d been instructed not to get its attention. No doubt going for the face was the fastest way to do that. She approached at a light jog, drawing her sword back again. As the sword art formed, she became distracted. Should I attack the legs? Maybe the tail is a weak point. God, the way Freyd picked out the opening immediately, it’s probably right in front of me and I’m just going to miss it. Lost in her own self-doubt, she let the blade swing lazily as the back foot crashed into the ground. The speed at which it came down surprised her, and threw off her timing. The blade connected at an odd angle; she felt more resistance this time, but the scratch was so shallow, the shark hadn’t even recognized it. It might as well have been a grass burr. Still, this strike was better than the last. Daring to stay close by the shark’s feet, she vowed that the next time he called an opening, she would find it. This shark isn’t dying without at least one wound from me. Spoiler Post Action: ST-1 -> Terra Firma Roll ID 224371 | BD: 6 + 3 - 4 - 1 = 4. Miss. Typhoonflame 0 Posted August 15 #15 Share Posted August 15 (edited) Ty felt like this fight was turning to chaos too soon. Wasn't the guy in charge supposed to be some kind of expert? Would an inexperienced player have out that placard out there? Was she a fool to have trusted him, and this whole party? That was what she had going through her mind as she missed her initial strike. "Typhoonflame... sound like TIFF, if I think it fast enough. Apologies in advance if you don't like nicknames, but that one might stick for awhile." said the leader of their party, and Ty almost rolled her eyes. "Can we talk about that later, trying not to die here!" she shouted, glaring up at their enemy. Her first harder quest...she had to regain her composure and strike. Breathing in, she ran towards it again, still not really used to actually having balance, and struck again, just as Acanthus missed. she took her chance, knowing the monster was distracted by her ally. This time, her hit landed at the side of the creature and she grinned. "Take that!" Spoiler Post Action: Basic Attack-> Terra Firma Roll ID 226374| BD: 9 + 1= 10. Forgotten-Ember 0 Posted August 16 #16 Share Posted August 16 (edited) After learning his lesson and a quick search for a makeshift weapon, he grabbed a nearby stone, hoping it would serve as a sufficient stopgap. he swung at the beast once again, but the lack of experience with such an unwieldy weapon caused a bad miss, the stone sailing past its intended target and skidded once across the ground before coming to a halt. A hefty thud sounded into the ground. I knew I shouldn't have skipped the market, frustration boiled over. But no, the flyer said “come as you are, you'll be fine it said. Fine, my ass. I can't hit a damn thing here, and everything around me is more than capable of ending me.” The beast, recovering from the impact, locked its focus on its attacker. Its eyes narrowed with renewed aggression as it charged forward at freyd thrusting itself towards the man, its open maw lagging behind the acrobatic movements of its next meal. Freyd 0 Posted August 20 Author #17 Share Posted August 20 (edited) "Goddamn. How is something so dry also so slippery!?" Playing an unhinged game of cat and mouse with the sand shark, Freyd kept missing the thing by a hair's breadth while its jaws had the same luck against him. The other players did what they could, but it was a given that the onus to end this fight rested with him. "Just mind your hate. Terra Firma won't be forgiving if any of you accidentally pull aggro." Bending backwards in a bone-wrenching arch, he barely dodged the thing's latest serrated snap and had to pivot and flip off his left hand as the mob's tail swung wide with the hope of knocking him off its feet. Freyd knew he could take a couple of nibbles, if it came to that, but the longer this battle dragged on, the worse slim chances got that some might actually get hurt. An attempted charge fared no better, his fingers not even close to the mark as he streaked from one end of the bowl to the other, a cloud-like sandy wake billowing out behind him. Acanthus 0 Posted August 20 #18 Share Posted August 20 (edited) Acanthus echoed Freyd’s frustration. She knew he would have to do the brunt of the work, but even still. Why am I so useless?! Half-forming a sword art, she discharged it too early to even release properly. And despite the early swing, the shark lept out of the way as it pounced for Freyd yet again. Her frustrated yell was lost in the chaotic sounds and movements of the fight. The fight needed to finish, and it needed to finish soon. The longer it went on, the more danger they were all in. Freyd had not landed a hit since his initial strike. Not that she blamed him—he was busy narrowly avoiding the full brunt of the boss. He shouted, "might be time to change tactics. Just keep moving!" Doing her best to keep up, Acanthus followed behind, in the Shark’s dust cloud. This isn’t going to be enough. Keep on its tail, and all you’ll hit is air. Freyd was right—it was time to change tactics. She gulped nervously. Today was turning into a lot more than she bargained for. With a burst of speed, Acanthus sprinted past the dusty wake of the shark, and alongside its front feet. Now that she was next to the beast, she could see its slavering maw (less a few teeth), and she could hear the heavy breathing at it raced after Freyd. Typhoonflame 0 Posted August 20 #19 Share Posted August 20 "I had to pull aggro!" Ty argued back when Freyd said to be careful with the hate they were receiving from the shark. It wasn't like she had a choice, she had to attack while she had the chance! Freyd told them to keep moving and she sighed. Movement was the worst thing for her because she still wasn't used to having a non-disabled body. But whatever, she'd try and stab this thing again. she just had to. But seeing everyone miss again discouraged her. Would she even come out of this alive? Would any of them? And if they didn't...what was all of this for? Just for naught? With a deep breath, she swung her rapier again, aiming to strike and hopefully paralyze her target, but because she was also trying to be evasive...she fumbled it, stumbled and had to catch herself before she faceplanted. Cursing, she righted herself and awaited the next attack. Spoiler Post Action: Basic Attack-> Terra Firma Roll ID 227410| BD: 2 + 1= 3 Miss.
