[PP-05] Sharkbait, the Third? <<Bloodstained Land>>

Recommended Posts

"Awwww crap!"

Fingers sliding along the strangely rubbery texture of the sand shark's digital flesh, Freyd had just failed again to cull the damnable beast from existence.  Cardinal was being a bitch again, or it's RNG.  The distinction was immaterial.

"Fine.  So, we'll change things up."  Hearing the tension and frustration in the voices of of his team members, he knew they needed reassurance. They also needed to feel a sense of worth in this endeavor.  It wasn't good enough to fight Aincrad's battles purely for the sake of others.  These players had already stepped up, or they wouldn't be out here in the first place.  No, this was about learning to rely on each other - a lesson he sometimes forgot in his solitude.

"Listen up," he called, keeping Terra Firma distracted with a series of flips and feigned strikes.  "Jaws, here, is being a royal pain today, so I'm going to need your help." The ribbons of pure blackness wrapped around his fists unraveled, flailing like a wet noodle-shaped hole in the fabric of existence, only to be replaced by a sickened purple miasma that bound itself to Freyd's flesh in the same way as its predecessor.  "Keep hitting it with everything you've got.  Even a basic attack can trigger it's Assault Mode, which actually makes it easier to hit.  But we'll need to get our timing right for this to work.  The weapon I've equipped has the absolute accuracy enhancement, to help improve our odds.  If even one of you can find and hit a weak spot, we'll take it down, together.  I'll keep its attention on me.  Got it?"

Sparing only a second to catch their faces, he whirled and flung himself once more towards danger's menacing maw.

This had better work.

Note: Terra Firma stun immunity would have ended on Forgotten Ember's last turn.  Stat block updated.

Freyd’s hands started to act oddly. Something about the space around them seemed to, well, it disappeared entirely. Acanthus had the distinct feeling she was watching something that she should only observe indirectly, because her mind was having a hard time understanding it. Finally, the paradox seemed to settle, and his hands glowed with a purple miasma.

Acanthus felt both relieved and concerned. Freyd’s adjustment meant that things weren’t out of control just yet. Although… the edge pressing into his voice was noticeable. Maybe it was anger, or annoyance—Acanthus had a hard time deciphering people’s tone.

Terra Firma seemed to be slowing down to focus on Freyd yet again. Acanthus rushed in without much more than a prayer to finally, maybe, possibly land a hit. Her sword barely started glowing before she swung it like a baseball bat. The shark’s leg was already gone.

“God DA–” she choked down the second half of the word. If Freyd can be calm and collected, then I can too. Although at this point, I’m prepared to do something drastic just to finish the fight.

Ty got a sense of foreboding when Freyd said it was time to change things. Change how, what was he planning to do? She didn't have time to think about it, though, as he'd already set his plan into motion. She just hoped it would work. All they had to do was land a hit, right? That shouldn't be too hard, surely? She'd done it before, even though it hadn't done much damage, so she could do it again. She had to.

"Yeah, I'm on it!" Ty called out to Freyd, nodding. She was gripping her rapier so hard that her knuckles had gone white, so she took a deep, long breath to refocus.

It was now her turn...Arcanthus had just missed...so she had to hit. This fight had to end or they wouldn't last. But in her stress, as she swung at the creature yet again, trying to hit it in an arc as it passed her...she missed.

No, come on...why now? Dread filled her heart, especially since she noticed one of the party members was missing...Where had he gone?!

  • 2 weeks later...

Typhoon managed to score a critical hit on the stampeding shark, and it became noticeably more agitated. It careened off to the edge of the bowl before turning around and pawing the sand with a snort.

“Freyd?!” Acanthus yelled nervously. “I think it is about to get angry again.” Terra Firma bellowed and charged the group, jaw hanging wide with a mouth full of broken teeth. This isn’t real, none of this is real, she told herself in a near panic. So it’s not going to matter if I do something drastic. As Terra Firma came closer, she took one deep breath. You’ve had your moment to worry, now it’s time to work.

The shark’s rampage was easy enough to dodge. The difficult part was staying close enough to counter-attack. As the shark thundered by, just a few meters from her face, she felt like she was next to a speeding train. Right as the body passed her, Acanthus jumped, sword held high. Crashing into the thing’s tail, she stuck the sword as deep as she could. Instead of the satisfying roar of pain she had hoped for, the thing acted like it had simply stepped on a pebble. I guess I’ll have to escalate. People in movies always climb the back of charging beasts and slay them easily, right? Trying to ignore that Freyd was likely the man for the job, Acanthus attempted to hold on for dear life, whipping off the back of Terra Firma like a flag in a hurricane. Rather than any heroic climb up the beast’s back, Terra Firma shook its tail non-chalantly, throwing Acanthus like a leaf. She held onto her sword for dear life, and thankfully, it came with her, tearing a lengthy, bleeding gash in the shark’s tail as it sped away. Landing with a painful thud, she rolled four or five times in the sand. Acanthus stopped moving with a small groan.

Ty flinched when she saw Terra-Figma was now much angrier. She knew she should've expected it, but that didn't mean she was happy about it or that she wasn't scared!

"Arcanthus, please be careful!" she shouted when she saw her ally clinging to the shark, with her sword stuck in its tail. Just as she yelled, the girl was thrown off and rolled on the ground, only to stop moving after. "Are you okay?!" she shouted again, running over to her to shield her if the shark attacked again.
Raising her rapier, she tried to strike the shark's legs as it came back around, but her hands were shaking from the anxiety of seeing someone get thrown off the giant monster's tail...and she missed. Badly.

Facing Arcanthus again, she leaned down to offer her a hand. "Come on, I got you!"

"Freyd, please do some damage, we can't keep doing this for long!" she said to their leader.

"What the heck is she doing?  Did her weapon get stuck or something?"

Without the luxury of standing still for any length of time, the best Freyd could manage was tumble sharply to the left, forcing the mob to veer and shake his ally loose in the opposite direction.  Contorting his body like it was made of rubber, the Whisper snared the sand shark by the snout, if only barely.  It was enough.  The sword art unleashed shattered the forefront of the mob's avatar, granting him the greater purchase required for a better grip.  As his feet returned to ground, he whirled with momentum and flung the beast hard into the arena wall with a masonry-shattering crunch.

Peeling itself out of a personalized crater, Terra Firma looked significantly worse for wear, half its skin peeled off and exposing the glaring orange pixel core beneath.

"It's almost down," he cried, hoping the other two would keep out of its sights.  Frenzied as it was, who knew what rules the beast might be able to break.

Acanthus looked up to see Typhoon standing above her, shield raised. “Th—thanks, Ty,” she coughed as she stood back up. Collecting herself, she took stock of the battlefield one more time. Freyd’s last attack had done substantial damage to the shark, but it still held on, running after him like a rampaging bull.

The shark was galloping toward Freyd again. However Cardinal decided who to attack, it was working overtime; Terra Firma was locked in on Freyd, and no one else. She and Ty might have been nothing more than sand in the area. It hadn’t even tried to step on her as it ran past last time. And it gave her an idea. She thanked Ty, and began moving towards the shark. More specifically, in front of it.

What are you doing?! We don’t take risks.

It’s not a risk. The shark is going to ignore you. And if it’s focused on Freyd, then you’ll know precisely where it’s going and how it’s moving. “Freyd!” She yelled across the arena. “I’m sorry to ask, but do you think you can hold still for just a moment?! I think I can make something work.”

She darted away from Ty, aiming for the space just about ten meters ahead of their guide. It wasn’t going to give him much reaction time at all, but from what she’d seen of his reflexes, he wouldn’t need much. For the first time in this fight, she wasn’t chasing the shark, or avoiding it, or running away from it. I’m here now—come at me.

She knew in her heart the boss was looking at Freyd, but with how close they stood, its black, beady eyes seemed locked on her frail form. She nervously gauged the shark’s trajectory one last time. She couldn’t spare the moment to look at Freyd and make sure he was safe; she just had to trust in him. And so Acanthus stared ahead, resolved to her idea—the stupidest one she’d had so far—and began to channel a sword art through Wormwood. Holding the blade aloft, she waited to hook her fish. Bearing down on her, it was less a fish, or even a bull, but rather a massive, unstoppable freight train. And she was standing in its way. It’s just a game. Nothing is real. Nothing matters. It’s just a game, just a game—

Closing in on Freyd (or where he had been), Terra Firma reared its head—just like she’d anticipated. Acanthus barely cleared the underside of the rampaging beast and narrowly missed the thunderous feet. Her blade caught in the chest of the creature as it ran over her, and the force picked her up off the ground with a sudden, violent tug. Her pain indicators roared; her head began to spin from the sounds and sensations that poured through her.

Cardinal’s physics engines seemed confused. In the real world, the force might have dislocated her arms. But this wasn’t real life, and the Cardinal was uncertain how to handle the damage from a sword art that had barely begun, or damage to a player that only loosely resembled falling. Everything above her chest buzzed violently as the pain indicators urged her to stop what she was doing. But Acanthus clung to Wormwood, hoping to score another bleeding gash on the creature. And it was working—the blade pulled slowly at the shark’s underbelly as its own speed forced the blade backwards. The gash appeared even more grievous than the previous one, and Acanthus was satisfied to finally hear a pained howl from the beast.

Right as she thought the worst of it had passed, her pain indicators spiked, and the sensation became too strong for her to bear. She lost her grip on Wormwood, flying off of the shark for the second time in a short span. She flew out from underneath Terra Firma and skidded to a halt. She hoped it was for the last time. Her entire body felt numb as she laid motionless, spread-eagle in the sand. With the sound of Terra Firma growing more distant, she didn’t feel the urgent need to move. Freyd and Typhoon would have things under control.

She closed her eyes. What was it the veterans said in boss fights? “S-switch,” she whispered to the air, her own little joke to herself.

Hearing Freyd shout that the shark was almost down made Ty look up. She felt a surge of adrenaline and anxiety. This was it. This had to be it. They couldn't keep this up for much longer, after all. It was almost unnerving to see what was under the monstrosity's armor, but Ty couldn't allow herself to be afraid now, or to lose focus.

Arcanthus moved towards the shark all of a sudden, and Ty was too slow to stop her. She could only stare in pure shock as Arcanthus stood in front of the shark, then struck at its underbelly from below, holding on tight. Her breath caught and she didn't even have the words to call out to her. Then Arcanthus flew backwards again, landing in the sand. Gritting her teeth, Ty cursed. How is she so brave while I'm just sitting here?! MOVE IT! she screamed at herself, running forward for another attack. She had to help finish it off!

And yet...she couldn't. Just as she ran closer to attack, the monster veered to the right and she completely missed. Tears stung in her eyes. Could she survive this?!

"Holy shit... they actually did it!"

Freyd's initial reaction was to watching Ty take up a defensive position over their floundering teammate - an impressive feat in the desert, yet apt to their foe.  A single hit from the vicious sand shark would have obliterated her from existence, and she knew it.  She'd been warned, and chose to stand anyway.  Acanthus, meanwhile, shows off one of the gutsiest moves he'd ever seen by a newbie across all the many runs of the Sharkbait training program, using herself as an improvised spike chain for the beast to rake itself across.  Essentially, she'd used its own speed and strength against it.  Simple in concept, but beautifully executed, and exposing the sort of daring he someday hoped to see on the front lines.

A deep bleeding wound set Terra Firma into an absolute frenzy of chomping teeth and flung spittle, barreling down on the Freyd faster than he could clear ground.  Poorly positioned due to an ill-timed, but totally worthwhile pause, Freyd was left to brace as Jaws the Third leapt fully out of the sands intending to devour him whole.

"Ack... dude.  Breath mints!"

Feet skidding back as as the mob's insane momentum and weight shoved him back towards the arena wall, Freyd caught its open mouth with both hands gripping the only things available to him: it's teeth. Serrated chompers bit deep, but the Whisper managed to turn and twist, pivoting its massive body overhead and slamming it into the sandstone wall, scouring its beleaguered body against the cheese-grater surface.  Already on the verge - thank goodness - their enemy collapsed under the strain and spilled its sparkly guts all over Freyd.  Its sudden disappearance threw off his balance, landing on his ass, relieved and oddly laughing.  It had been a tediously good fight - well matched and hard fought.

"You did well, all of you.  And thanks for the assists at the end.  That was some good team work.  You should both be proud."
