Dodging the issue, largely because he didn't understand the system mechanics in the slightest, Foyle found himself facing a dilemma.  He'd contented himself for a time simply to remain in the background, waiting out his remaining days in seclusion.  Oblivion was expected to claim him and end this hellish existence.  Here was a man out of time, already faded into the background in his own world, now thrust into one impossibly unfamiliar.  Ancient teaching and pre-tech values seemed to have no place here.  Foyle was an old man, and an even older soul, lost in an age he couldn't really fathom, until he finally chose to deny fate its prize.

"If I'm just to wither and waste away, should I not do something more meaningful with whatever days remain to me?"  The question lingered long, waiting for an answer.  Sitting symbolically on the shore between the Lake of Reflections and Forest of Memories.  Floor 22's ambience suited his temperament best, and meditating in isolation upon the water-washed stones away from the busy fishing port of Coral granted him a modicum of peace.

Righteousness.  Loyalty.  Honor.  Respect.  Honesty.  Courage.  Consistency.  These were the virtues of his youth, lost to necessities of work and family in a modernizing world.  Traditions fell by the wayside faster than casualties on the battlefield.  His limited time of service in the Defense Force had taught him valuable lessons, even though no formal conflicts had ever been declared.  Yet, those core tenets remained, ever-present and more relevant than ever as all other sense of order fell by the wayside.  Aincrad was a place of pure chaos, populated by mostly children lost to their terrors, compounded by total loss of inhibition.  A furrowed brow relieved itself with a sigh.

"I cannot judge them, if I will not judge myself.  What am I prepared to do about it?"

Opening his eyes a sliver, those grey, careworn orbs fell upon the sheathed weapon set within arm's reach at all times.

"Maybe the old ways still have value?  I've heard rumours, and seen others carrying the blades of the samurai.  Could this be my path forward?  To find its inspiration in the past?"
