Down to three HP now. Had he not noticed being at only one earlier, he'd have said this was the lowest he'd ever gone. Still, he hesitated to click the button. Something told him that if he didn't wait until the genuine last moment possible, he wouldn't live to regret it. He needed to squeeze every last drop of value out of his health bar if we wanted to make it out alive. Or so he hoped.

Countless of the boars had been extinguished by now, their deaths progressively fueling a loot panel which had by now begun adding values faster than his eyes could follow. Now that he was paying it any mind, eyes glued to the health bar. But, in the back of his head, he couldn't help but wonder what his inventory was going to look like if he managed to pull out a survival at the end of all of this.

Two HP now. His finger was shaking as though he had Parkinson's. Never before had he felt such a mixture of fear and adrenaline. The boars that encircled him appeared to be gradually thinning in number, but it was difficult to tell for certain. His HUD was now obfuscated by red, an indicator that along with the breedling of the low HP chime let him know that he was so, totally and utterly, FUCKED.

Just a little longer. He had to make it efficient. He had to make it efficient. If he used it too early, what would he do if it was down to him and the last boar, and he only had 1 HP remaining? He knew he couldn't fight these things. Not in his wildest dreams. There was no way he could take one down with his blade, particularly without taking a hit himself. He had to wait for it to get down to only one, no matter how much the idea nauseated him.

He wasn't even paying attention to the mobs anymore. He was certain he hadn't so much as glanced at them in the past several minutes. His eyes flickered between his finger hovering over the button to summon the potion, and his health bar. He made no attempt to avoid them, no attempt to flee. His feet remained rooted to the ground, literally quaking in his boots, as he waited for the opportune moment to pop his consumable. A moment too soon, possible death. A moment too late, definitive death. There was no wiggle room. No room for error. His eyes continued to flicker back and forth as he felt the sweat drip from his brow, only having just realized how hot he felt. His boots were soaked, as though standing in a puddle.

Then, another boar hit him, and he watched the health bar dip down to one. NOW! His finger smashed through the ethereal display to summon the potion in haste, and a moment later the vessel with his life-saving liquid materialized.

He fumbled clumsily to uncork the vessel, seeing a board charging at him out of his peripherals. He could hear the stamp of their hooves approaching, feel the eyes of a predator staring down their prey while going in for the kill. He knew that if that boar hit him, this was it. He was done for. And for some fucking reason, he could not manage to get the cork free from the glass. Finally his slender digits managed to find purchase on the cork, and the thing flew from the vessel with wild abandon, and he immediately down the concoction just as the boar closed the distance between them to near zero.

To say he'd saved himself by a mere nanosecond may not have been an exaggeration. He could have sworn he saw the smallest glimmer of the number zero before his HP began to climb, finally settling on nineteen to account for the damage the boar had inflicted.

That had been way too close. There was no excuse for it. Why the fuck had he fumbled with the damn lid for so long? If there was any emotion he felt now, it was anger with himself for having almost been the cause for his own demise. This anger, however, was short lived, as another emotion quickly took hold. Relief. Euphoria. He was alive, and his lungs could still draw breath. He could still see, hear, smell, taste, feel. His faculties were intact. He was alive.

His eyes finally removed themselves from his health bar and he surveyed the remaining crowd. By now, he must have whittled them down by at least half. If he was doing his (rudimentary) math correctly, he should have enough HP between what he currently had and what would be provided by the final health potion during the eleventh hour to cleave through the remainder of these bastards.

There was something special about a scrape with death. Something that brought a new emotion to the surface. Pure, unadulterated adrenaline. It wasn't for him, but he was starting to understand the appeal. Was this the dragon all those crazy Frontliners were chasing? Was it what drove them to be able to reach the feats they had? Oz could hardly stomach it. His innards did flip flops over themselves, and he was literally vibrating with excitement. It was too much. This was why he'd never considered himself cut out for combat.

He just had to keep playing the same game with these assholes. Take damage, let thorns do the work, and take potion. As another couple of boars charged him and met their fates, he felt assured in his ability to see this through. He could make it. No, he would make it. There was no other way out than through.

Finally, he started getting a little more creative with it. Perhaps a foolish idea, but he wondered if he could glean a few more kills by throwing himself into the boars rather than just waiting for them to approach him. He may not have had the chops to cut them down with a weapon, but throwing his body into something was something he figured anyone could do. After all, these things must have been blind, as they were missing more often than they were hitting. So, he gave it a shot.

In a clumsy motion, he lurched forward and tossed his body toward two boars which had approached. In a vivid pop, both were reduced to nothing more than fractal ash. A third took the opportunity to take a swipe at him, seemingly avoiding the thorns damage, but this was a good start. This was a technique he could see himself sinking his teeth into.

It wasn't perfect, by any means. Throwing ones fragile body into a sea of boars and hoping a few would pop. But, in a weird twist of fate, it seemed to actually be working. His health was ticking down much faster than before, having reached the yellow this time much earlier than in previous instances, but that was almost a good thing. He was uncomfortable with the concept of his ever impending mortality in the predicament within which he found himself, but his HP draining faster also meant that he was thinning the her faster, too.

He'd found his groove. Clumsily throwing himself at boars like a low level Pokemon trying to glean its first scraps of EXP from the unsuspecting wild Pidgey lurking in Route 1. Tackle was his new move. Brilliant.

He'd be laughing at himself if his situation weren't so dire. Perhaps, when it was all over, he'd find time for a chuckle. But for now, this was life or death.

BAM. Just like that, he'd found himself in the red once more. He had to stop throwing himself into the mobs and adjust himself back to staring at his HUD, taking a small moment to summon his battle-ready inventory and lay eyes on the final potion which separated him from certain death.

From the looks of the thinning horde, it appeared that his math had been correct before. If he was efficient, he'd be able to squeeze out just enough HP to send all of these asshole swine to their maker. He hoped that somewhere, Kayaba had to explain to each and every one of these cretins why he'd sent their entire village to kill themselves against a noncombatant. It was the most ridiculous visual one could imagine, but Oz had hope. He really hated the fucking guy right about now.

Even if not that, perhaps they'd already locked him up on the outside.

Wow, that hadn't taken long at all. By the time his eyes flickered back up to his health bar, he saw that he was indeed at only one remaining HP again. The incessant breedle of his HUD signaled sure death, but he wouldn't accept that. His finger once against smashed through the panel and brough his life-saving elixir to life, which this time his slender digits were (thankfully) able to ungraciously clasp and force open in the blink of an eye. He down the concoction and eyed the remaining boars, trying to count the remainder in his mind as the health bar ticked back up to full.

If he was counting correctly, there were only ten left. Between the occasional unexplained hit which didn't kill them, Oz felt confident that he'd done it. He'd managed to make it to the end. Now he just needed the rest of them to kill themselves on his thorns and he'd be home free.

Thinking back to the previous topic, Oz couldn't help but fantasize about Kayaba behind bars at this moment. Waiting for the day they sent him to the gallows and executed him for his crimes. Would he get lethal injection, or would they go more medieval on his ass? He'd have loved to see that asshole strung up by a tree. Or, perhaps, go straight back to the guillotine. Roll his head across the floor as a warning for anyone else who would dare to fuck with people like this again.

Did they even have the death penalty in Japan?

It didn't matter. That guy wasn't making it out alive. The others in prison alongside him would see to that. How many children had been wrapped up in this bullshit, who had already met with their fate by now? How many fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, uncles, aunts, sons, daughters? Loved ones? The number must have been insurmountable.

This was it. He was coming up on the last of them. The dozens that had previously surrounded him were now reduced to only seven. It had gradually become easier and easier to pick them out, and now he could make out each and every last remaining boar individually. It had been a long road. A terrifying road. One Oz hadn't deserved. But he had persevered, for better or worse, and now found himself at the tail end of his death sentence. Seven boars left, and 15 HP with which to dispatch them. He was so happy he could have cried right then and there. Perhaps he would, just so as to make himself appear an easy target, and entice the animals to charge headlong to their deaths. Nothing would have made him happier.

Just seven more, and he'd be free. Just seven more, and he could make his way back to town an put all of this bullshit behind him. Just seven more, and he'd never have to deal with another boar for as long as he lived, or so he hoped.

"Come on, dickheads!" he taunted. "What's the matter!? Not as palatable when there's not fifty of you goddamn things to chunk me down? Have some balls! Come get some! I'm right here."

Not that the goading would work on these AIs anyway, unless somehow provoked through a skill or some other mechanism of earning their ire. Not like he hadn't already managed to do so, anyhow. There was still a nagging feeling that something about this encounter just hadn't been right. Was Cardinal finally glitching out, after all this time? Who was on the outside making sure the damn thing wasn't falling into a state of disrepair? Did anyone even care? He felt like, if they did, someone would have found a way to break everyone out of this mess by now.

When he got out of this prison, he had every intention of ripping everyone a new asshole. The regulatory committees who allowed this to happen, as well as the folks who sat on their hands while children and loved ones died because of horseshit like this.

There he was, back in the yellow again. And, strangely, there were more boars remaining than he'd expected. Had he done the math wrong, or were they simply getting luckier with hitting him without thorns activating? Was the immolation potion he'd taken on his way down to the lake starting to wear off? How long ago had that been? He couldn't remember, as everything up to this point seemed like a blur. The adrenaline clouded his thoughts and made it nearly impossible to focus on anything other than what was happening in the moment. Probably some sort of evolutionary trait which compelled him to pay attention to whatever was threatening his life at the time. It made sense, he supposed, but it was still annoying to be seemingly incapable of organizing his thoughts into anything more coherent than the smattering of obscenities that kept looping through his mind on repeat. He was so damn ready to be done.

It was finally down to the last four. They surrounded him, eyeing their prey precariously, none seeming to be willing to take a step closer to their foe. It pissed Oz off, that they could ambush him in a massive pack like that, and then start to back off once they realized their little war of attrition wasn't going to pay off. It almost seemed as though none of them wanted to continue, but their programming compelled them to continue the attack. He was sure that any self respecting boar in real life would flee if they saw a man with the corpses of forty-six of their buddies laying at his feet.

But, of course, this was Aincrad. There was no real logic to be had here, only whatever the Cardinal system deemed true. Oz half expected another fifty to show up right after he finally made his way through these last four, just to spite him.

Then there were three. And then, two. It was possible that Oz could escape by now, but why would he? He was still in the yellow, and with only two mobs left, it almost seemed like a waste to give up now. May as well clear them to get whatever col, mats, or loot he could from them. He no longer felt afraid. At this point, boredom may have been a more apt description for what he was feeling. That, and exhaustion.

The adrenaline had long wore off. He considered himself 'safe' now, so long as things didn't degrade into another ambush or a series of unfortunate critical hits, which he had finally identified as the reason for why they sometimes survived after scoring a hit. He simply hadn't noticed the difference between a normal hit or a critical hit, because either drained the same quantity of HP from his health bar.

And then, as Boar 50 fell, there was one. Boar 41, which had seemed to have held on long past its expiration date. Oz stared the creature down with utter contempt in his heart. "You know, I may have felt a little bad for you assholes, if you hadn't ambushed me FIFTY STRONG." He knew the thing couldn't understand what he was saying, but this wasn't really for the boar. This was for him. He needed some sort of way to express just how fucked up this entire situation had been.

"I mean, really. Fifty? FIFTY? WHAT SORT OF LEVEL ONE CAN HANDLE FIFTY BOARS?"

There was a hint of irony in the statement that hadn't escaped Oz, but he didn't care. He was livid. Yes, he'd managed to survive, but by the skin of his teeth. He was in the red again, for fuck's sake, and that was after gaming the system with everything he had.

"So, come on. Come at me. Your ambush failed. Oz lives. And I hope each and every one of you putrid fucks, if you're even capable of it, felt some sort of shame with every death. I hope you all realized how stupid you were in the end, to charge headlong into the same death felt by dozens of your brothers. And I hope you, mister forty-one, feel the most foolish as you take that last breath and find it doesn't even make it to your lungs before they're crystalized into pixelated vapor. I hope, from the bottom of my soul, that you feel like a total IDIOT for having ever staged such a ridiculous assault."

As though through sheer provocation, the boar squealed, and then charged headlong toward its fate. It made contact with Oz, whimpered, and then burst into countless fractal shards.

"Fuck you."

And that was it. He'd done it. He'd defeated them. No more boars remained.

He collapsed backward, rump meeting with the soft earth in a jarring thud as his body nearly gave out on him. Sure, he'd thought the adrenaline had waned, but perhaps a more accurate way of putting it was that he'd simply gotten used to what it felt like by that point. Now that the hormone really had stopped, he felt like he could barely move. Was that normal? For ones pixelated avatar to feel like it couldn't possibly move another muscle? Perhaps the connection between mind and body was more firm than he'd previously believed.

His grey hues peered out over the horizon, now painted a brilliant orange as the sun slipped ever slowly out of sight. It would be night soon, and that would be when the real mobs would come out to play. If he wanted any hope of making it, he needed to leave now. But still, he found it difficult to will his body to move. The sun had been high in the sky when he encountered the first of the boars. Just how long had he been wrapped up in that skirmish?

Seeing as he hadn't really kept track during the battle, and how his legs felt like jelly, he figured now might be a decent time to take a gander at his spoils. His eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw everything that had accumulated in his inventory. Countless armors, weapons, consumables, trinkets. And moreover, he'd managed to take home a few real treasures in the form of Demonic Shards and and additional Gleaming Scale, over the one he'd plucked from the fish he caught earlier.

Wow. That almost made it feel worth it. But not really.

As the blues and violets began to overtake the vista, Oz wearily made his way to his feet and started the long trek back to the Town of Beginnings. He'd be damned if the night mobs spawned and trapped him in some sort of fifty-strong ambush once more. He wouldn't survive a second one.
