Just for the Halibut

His eyes flipflopped between the two fisherman. Derrick, the Spear Fisher, was one of two things: a liability or a really, really good shot. He carried a spear over his shoulder and a harpoon gun at his waist. Clearly, he was no amateur. The tip of the spear was stained with blood. Derrick didn't need to show a resume; his experience was up for display. Slung over the shaft of the spear were a dozen dead Fossil Fish, the very things Morningstar was hunting.

Renault was less of a combatant and more of a strategist. He was older, gruffer, and wiser with a knack for swamp water fishing. He carried a walking stick that Morningstar had mistakenly assumed was a spear. It wasn't his fault that the man held it over his shoulder. He had been mislead from the beginning.

It was a difficult decision, choosing between Derrick and Renault, so rather than think it through, he spat out an answer at random.

"Renault."

Morningstar almost wished he had chosen Derrick. He seemed like the quiet type, focused more on spearing the fish than casual chitchat.

For God's sake, Renault was not that.

"So there I was, alone, in the belly of a hundred foot alligator, with nothing but a spear, a day's rations, and a stick of dynamite."

He kept going on and on about his fishing tales, most of which were exaggerated or made up entirely. By the time he told Morningstar what he had done with the dynamite, he had all but tuned him out. Occasionally, he'd chime in with an "hm," or a "that's crazy," but he tried not to egg the fisherman on.

His savior tugged on the line, ending the story before they could get to the heroic ending. "Got something."

It wasn't strong enough to be the Lurker, and Renault let him know. "A Fossil Fish, probably. Nothing to worry about. Draw him up and we'll take care of the bugger."

It was as Renault had predicted. One Fossil Fish hung from the end of Morningstar's rod, flailing about. It squirmed, and Morningstar held it out far. Fish were not meant to have arms and legs. It looked like a demented anglerfish. Something went very wrong while it was being created.

"That'ns dinner," the fisherman grinned, imaging the feast they would hold.

"You eat these fuckers?" Morningstar scowled in disgust.

"You bet we do. A little bit of butter and garlic 'n you've got yerself a damn fine meal."

Morningstar, for a brilliant second, forgot that it had thumbs. The Fossil Fish pulled the hook out of its lip and jumped onto the boat. In between the two men, it gargled and grunted, spewing murky water from its orifices.

"Awww, that's not right," Star swiped at it, startling the two-legged fish. Droplets of water and saliva splashed onto his boot, and he groaned in displeasure.

"Get the bugger! Quick, before he escapes!" Renault shouted, swinging his cane around like a madman.

Morningstar would have been perfectly happy with the fish escaping, but obliged anyway. He shoved his blade into the gut of the Fossil Fish, heavily rocking the boat. Instead of disappearing, like most mobs did, it flopped to the floor, lifeless.

"WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEE," came Renault. "A mighty fine catch, sir, a mighty fine catch indeed."

Morningstar returned a grimace. He wouldn't have called his catch "mighty" in any way. Renault had already gotten busy, chopping off the arms and legs of the dead fish and tossing them back into the water. "Don't need these. All skin and bone, really. A bit of meat on the thighs, but it don't taste good."

"I can imagine," Morningstar said, hoping he wasn't invited to try it after Renault and his gang finished cooking. After looking at a Fossil Fish, he didn't think he could ever eat seafood again. The image was permanently seared into his brain.

Morningstar threw his line out once more, this time a bit further into the distance. All the while, Renault was providing unsolicited advice. "Bring your shoulder back more," he said, "and put your back into the toss."

His interest in fishing was so small that he wanted to throw the rod away and go home. He didn't, though, because he had a Lurker to catch. Morningstar leaned back while Renault told him the end of his alligator story.

"BAM! Just like that, I was out. No lizards have come by these parts since."

"Alligators aren't lizards," Morningstar muttered.

"What was that?"

"Alligators aren't lizards," he said a little bit louder.

"Well, then what are they?"

"I dunno. Some other type of reptile."

Renault scoffed. "They're scaly and slimy—they're bloody lizards!"

Before Morningstar could argue further, he felt another pull on his rod. This time, it was a lot heavier. It dragged the boat a bit, but Morningstar fought back, ripping it out of the water with a hefty tug. Renault stared up in awe at the Lurker, his village's perfect sacrifice, while Morningstar cursed at the horde of Fossil Fish popping out of the water behind it.

The horde approached, and as they neared, Morningstar blasted them with an arc of golden energy. The sword art faded, leaving four of the fish, the Lurker included, bobbing up and down in the water. The fifth Fossil Fish evaded, however. It lunged, clamping on to his shoulder with its gnarled jaw, clawing at him with slimy hands. He struggled, trying to push it off, and ended up flipping over the edge of the boat, into the opaque water.

He smashed against the fish's head with the pommel of his sword until it loosened its bite and swam off into the depths. Bubbles floated up from his mouth, and he kicked, pushing himself to the surface.

He loved to swim, but not in swamps. Renault gave him a hand, and he climbed back onto the rowboat, safe and sound. The stun was wearing off, and the fish began to squirm once more.

One at a time, the Fossil Fish regained authority over their limbs. Three of them dove under the water, swam beneath the boat, and jumped on top from the opposite side. They attacked in unison, and Morningstar hit back in one smooth swipe. Dying Sun finished them of cleanly, and Renault began dragging the limp bodies to his side of the tiny vessel. He was more interested in preserving his food than staying alive.

"You don't have like, a weapon or something?"

"Nope. Just this knife and my cane," Renault said.

"Those do count as weapons," Morningstar said, swatting away a leaping Fossil Fish.

"Knife's gotta stay sharp for cleaning up these bad boys, and my cane's antique!"

The Lurker emerged from the water, soaring over the boat. It's mouth was wide open, dozens of mangled teeth pointing out like daggers. It barely missed Star's head on the way down, and crashed back into the water on the other side. A wave caused the boat to rock.

It circled their boat from the depths, biding its time until another opportunity to pounce approached. The remaining Fossil Fish drew near as well, squealing at them. It spat up saliva-thickened water, disgusting as it climbed onto the rowboat. Morningstar blasted it with a stun, and it flew backwards, back into the water. It sunk out of sight. For now, all that the pair had to worry about was the Lurker.

Renault had quieted down, sensing that they had reached the climax of their fishing journey. The Lurker's next move would seal the deal. If Morningstar could catch it on its jump, they would be home free.

They waited, patient but on edge. It emerged from the water, and chomped at Morningstar as it fell. He sliced upwards, through its face, and it landed in the center of the boat, nearly capsizing it.

"That's... that's the Lurker," Renault said. "You've done it. You've bloody done it!" He cheered.

Before they could celebrate, the Fossil Fish that Morningstar had stunned reappeared. It jumped on Renault's back, strangling him, threatening to pull him under the swampy water. "He-help," he managed.

Morningstar sprung forwards, slicing off the creatures hands. It screeched and then fell backwards, disappearing forever. "Whew," Renault dropped to his seat. "Close one."

"Glad I could help," Morningstar rolled his eyes.

They rowed back to Dayurga, mostly unscathed and with a fair sized haul. Five of the six Fossil Fish remained on hand, and an enormous Lurker was pulled up into Renault's lap. He was sawing off its scales, giving them a rinse in the dirty water, and plopping them in a ratty bag.

When they arrived at the docks, they were surrounded by a horde of curious eyes. The catching of the Lurker was a historic event, apparently, and the entirety of the water town was excited for the sacrifice.

Morningstar wasn't going to stay to watch.

"Come with me," Renault gestured for Star to follow him, and explained that he had a gift to share. He took him to an artisan's shop, and introduced him to the NPC at the front counter. She smiled at them both. Much like the rest of the town, she was welcoming and excited for visitors.

"How may I help you today?" She asked.

Renault placed the bag of scales on the counter. "What can ya do with these? A necklace, maybe?"

She took a peek inside. "Ah! Lurker scales! A necklace will do just fine."

She got to work, taking the scales into the back and returning some time later with a beautiful necklace. Angler Scales, it was called. It was a nice piece to add to his collection, although he wasn't sure how much use it would get.

---

"Come back any time!" Renault and the villagers told him.

He had no intention of returning.

II
Hellscape

DmNKNwg.png

The image of Typhoonflame and Tolbana faded away, replaced by a fiery hellscape.

He swore he had sent himself home. What should have been a blue sky was a layer of red, smokey clouds. Smog polluted his senses, slowly suffocating him. Around him were crags of black stone and the cries of monsters. Rivers of magma flowed and fell over the edges of the cliffs, and he could feel the heat emanating from them. A castle, shrouded by shadows, vile and demonic, stood before him.

He was expected.

But by whom?

The large castle gate opened as he neared. Not ominous at all. His sword was already drawn, habitually. That happened more and more often as time passed and he grew comfortable in the world of warriors. He wasn't sure whether he liked it or not.

Inside the castle were statues made of black stone. At first, he thought that they were gargoyles. Upon further inspection, he recognized that they were demons.

In the air, hung ashy smoke. A bridge lay in his path to the castle's gate, guarded by two demonic figures. They were clad in chainmail, and wielded black halberds. "Halt!" One demon commanded, pointing his spear straight at Morningstar. "State your business. Why have you come to Castle Oryx."

Star wasn't sure what to say. "Fuck if I know," he shrugged.

He wasn't sure if it was the fowl language or the lack of sense, but neither of the demons seemed to appreciate his response. One charged, while the other blew into a curved horn. Star deflected a few weak strikes before chopping the first demon into bits. The second volleyed jabs at him, taking advantage of his extreme range, while his backup made its way to the fight. Two more demons flew out from within the castle, their batlike wings poised as they hovered overhead. Star swiped up, cutting through the long halberd.

He twisted around, slashing in a wide arc and chopping the flying demons in two. The spearless fellow remained, panic rising up slowly as he began to realize how imminent his death was. Morningstar spared him the chance to cry out, slipping his blade through the winged monstrosity's abdomen. It shattered, and blue pixels spread out through the air before disappearing entirely.

Another day, another dead mob.

He waltzed across the bridge, double-taking as he glanced down at what lay below. Magma spat up, but came no where near the metal plates of the bridge. The body of a dragon poked out, trapped in a deep slumber. Red scales and a loud snore kept him from sticking around for too long. It was far larger than that which he had fought on the Second Floor, and he had struggled greatly back then. He would surely be devoured by this one.

Another wave of demon guards flew out of the castle gates before he could even take a step off the bridge, their twisted forms silhouetted against the blood-red sky. The air grew thick with the scent of sulfur as their shrieks pierced the night, echoing off the dark stone walls. He tightened his grip on his sword, swinging at the first of the batch to come close.

He clipped it on the arm, but his blade was deflected by its steel plating. It thrust its spear at Morningstar, the tip glinting with an eerie crimson glow. He sidestepped just in time, feeling the rush of air as the spear narrowly missed his chest. With a swift counter, he brought his sword down with all his might, aiming for the exposed joint between the guard’s armor plates. The blade bit deep, severing the creature’s arm with a spray of dark red

But there was no time to catch his breath. Another guard was already upon him, its jagged claws slashing through the air. Morningstar raised his sword to block, the force of the blow nearly knocking him off balance. He gritted his teeth, pushing back with a surge of strength, his muscles straining under the weight of the attack. The guard snarled, its fanged maw inches from his face. With a grunt of effort, he twisted his blade and drove it upward, plunging it into the demon's chest.

The guard let out a guttural howl as it crumpled to the ground, but the victory was fleeting. More were coming, a relentless tide of darkness intent on overwhelming him. Morningstar knew he had to move quickly, or he risked awakening the dragon below.

Before he could even take a step forward, another demon lunged at him from the side, catching him off guard. Its massive form collided with him, sending him sprawling onto the cold metal. The impact rattled him, his sword skidding out of reach. The demon, a hulking brute with a gnarled face and spiked armor, pinned him down, its rancid breath hot against his face.

With a snarl, Morningstar thrust his knee into the demon’s gut, his booted foot scraping against the bridge as he tried to gain leverage. The demon barely flinched, its clawed hand tightening around Morningstar’s throat. Spots danced in his vision as the world seemed to constrict around him.

In a desperate attempt at survival, Morningstar flicked open his inventory and materialized an alternate sword. In one swift motion, he drove the blade into the demon’s side, twisting it viciously. The demon screeched in pain, loosening its grip just enough for Morningstar to thrust his free hand upward, shoving the beast off him.

He rolled to his feet, his muscles screaming in protest, and switched back to his primary weapon. The demon was already coming at him again, but Morningstar was faster. He spun, using the momentum to bring his sword around in a wide arc. The blade connected with the demon’s neck, decapitating it in a spray of red pixels.

The demon’s body crumpled, but its head rolled to the edge of the bridge and over the side, disappearing into the chasm below. Morningstar didn’t watch it fall—his focus was on the next wave of enemies. But then, a low, rumbling growl echoed up from the depths. He froze, his heart skipping a beat.

The sound grew louder, reverberating through the stone under his feet. He turned just in time to see a massive shadow moving beneath the bridge, scales glinting in the dim light. The dragon’s head slowly rose from the river of lava, its eyes glowing like molten lava as they locked onto Morningstar.

The beast let out a deafening roar, shaking the very foundations of the bridge. Morningstar could feel the heat radiating from its maw, the sheer force of its presence enough to send a shiver down his spine. He backed away slowly, but there was nowhere to run—the demons were closing in, and the dragon was fully awake.

Creativity struck him, and he thought of an idea to use the red dragon to his advantage. He took a few slow steps back, leading the flock of demons onto the bridge with him. Once everyone was near the center, he charged forwards, dodging and parrying blades while pushing through their defenses. They were on opposite sides now, with Morningstar closest to the castle's entrance and the demons trapped on the bridge. The dragon tore throw the air, level to the bridge when it came to a halt. It snorted, eyeing the five of them. Morningstar kicked the nearest demon back, before charging away. The dragon roared, letting loose its fiery breath and turning the demons into crisps and ash.

Morningstar ducked inside of the castle before the dragon could reduce him to cinders as well. Too many close calls for one day, he thought as he wandered down the fire-lit halls.

Morningstar's boots echoed off the obsidian walls as he moved through the castle's dim corridors. As he rounded a corner, the sound of clanking armor and guttural growls met his ears. He slowed his pace, his sword held at the ready. The hallway ahead widened into a large antechamber, the ceiling disappearing into darkness. The walls were adorned with tattered banners and ancient symbols written in a language unrecognized by the system's translator.

In the center of the chamber stood a squad of demons, more heavily armored and disciplined than the ones on the bridge. Their leader, a towering figure clad in obsidian-black armor, wielded a massive, glowing axe that pulsed with an unnatural energy. The leader’s red eyes narrowed as they caught sight of Morningstar, and a cruel smile spread across its face.

The demon leader raised its axe, and with a barked command in a harsh dialect, the other demons charged. There was no hesitation in their movements—they were well-trained, efficient killers, and they were intent on making him their next victim.

Morningstar braced himself, his mind racing as he calculated his next move. The demons closed in, their weapons gleaming in the firelight. He swung his sword, parrying the first blow, then quickly sidestepped another. But they were relentless, pressing him from all sides, forcing him back step by step.

He ducked under a wide slash from the leader’s axe, the blade whistling just above his head. The air crackled with dark energy as the axe embedded itself in the stone floor, sending up a spray of sparks. Morningstar seized the opportunity, slashing at the exposed side of one of the lesser demons, sending it crumpling to the ground.

But there were too many. He felt a sharp pain as a spear grazed his side, drawing blood. Another demon swung its mace, and Morningstar barely had time to bring his sword up in defense. The impact jarred his arm, nearly knocking the weapon from his hand.

Morningstar gritted his teeth and shoved the nearest demon back with a powerful kick, creating a small opening. He needed to end the fight quickly before he was overwhelmed. His eyes flicked to the leader, who was already pulling its axe free from the floor. That was the key—the others would fall without their commander.

With a burst of speed, Morningstar surged forward, weaving through the onslaught of attacks. He feinted left, drawing the leader’s attention, then twisted his body and lunged right, driving his sword deep into the gap between the leader’s armor plates. The demon let out a furious roar, but Morningstar didn’t stop. He twisted the blade and yanked it free, red floating from the wound.

The leader staggered, its strength fading as it tried to raise its axe for one last swing. Morningstar stepped back, watching as the life drained from its eyes. The other demons hesitated, their formation breaking as their leader crumpled to the ground.

Morningstar took advantage of the momentary chaos, cutting down the remaining demons before they could scatter.

Breathing heavily, Morningstar looked toward the massive doors at the end of the chamber. A throne room.

He pushed open the great doors, greeted by a gigantic demon in a crystal throne. Oryx, King of the Demons, grinned evilly from his seat. He was triple the size of the foot soldiers Star had fought, and the only armor he donned were a pair of spiked plates that he strapped to his forearms. It was a testament to his strength, or at the least, to his confidence. His skin was blood red and his blue horns were like halberds. He did not challenge Morningstar. He did not leave his throne.

"At last, a human," Oryx spoke in a low growl. "I wondered what kind of person would make their way to me. You even disposed of my guards. How impressive."

"And who are you?" Morningstar squinted, his sword primed. Dungeon bosses didn't normally have much to say.

"Some call me Conqueror. Some call me King. Alas, I am Oryx, the Great."

Star's blade burned gold as he readied a sword art.

"Now, now. I have no intention of fighting you here today. Perhaps we will meet again, young swordsman."

Morningstar activated Charge and rushed towards the demon king, but his blade was met with nothing but a plume of smoke. Oryx had vanished.
