[PP-F25] Dragon Hunter's Anth—No, Wait. Wrong Questline. | <<Trouble Brewing>>

Recommended Posts

URGENT!!!

Going dragon hunting. Need some help. Meet me @ F25 Labyrinth. 10:30 AM tmr.

- MS

Quest

Morningstar's message was posted sporadically on a few of the upper floors. A party of five or six would do. He'd have settled for two, though. He showed up early, and waited outside the entrance to the Labyrinth. He prepared his equipment, triple checking his inventory to make sure he had brought with him everything he needed. He planned for a long trip, aware that timing an expedition into the maze was futile. It changed so frequently that even plotting out a map would have proved impossible. For all he knew, he would find the dragon within the first hour.

Or, maybe, a month.

He was determined not to resort to eating spiders until at least the seven day mark, so his inventory was stocked primarily with meals. There was some room left over for necessities like teleport crystals and a book titled "Idiot's Guide to Slaying Dragons." The Librarian in Ronbaru had suggested it to him a few months prior, and he never went back to return it.

He chomped down on an apple, his morning rations, and stood by until somebody turned up for the road trip.

Chalk was getting everywhere.  As necessary as the sticks were when trying to navigate through this god forsaken maze, Freyd hated having to clean it off his black on black adventure wear after every foray.

"Here," he called, flicking one of them to a nervous looking Morningstar, the floor's perpetual morning gloom apparently bringing him down.  "Don't look so tense.  Finding this thing is harder than killing it, and I brought plenty of snacks."  A modest platter appeared, supplementing the party's needs and ready for others to partake as they arrived.  Freyd downed several additional items, thinking that most of whoever else showed up would be expecting him to tank and care only about how well they hit, and how hard.

Lastly, he summoned a steaming cup of coffee in a simple white porcelain mug, the scent of vanilla mixing with the more acrid liquid content to simmer down the bitterness and warm his insides.  Slurping its contents silently, the cup would vanish momentarily beneath his cowl, reappearing an instant later to the smacking of satisfied lips.

"Who else are we expecting?  Your message said it was urgent, so I assume this is pre-raid prep, but was rather vague on the invitees."

Note: CS (Shades of the Gemini) is in use.  If any other player objects to this, please state in first post and it will be considered inactive.

Dragon hunting was one of the few things that Pinball hadn't done. Partially because he'd just never gotten around to it. Partially because the only questline he knew about involving dragons had so much lore to navigate that just the thought of its undertaking gave him a headache. But this, he thought -- or hoped -- would be something different. The signature "MS" rang a bell. Pinball made the journey to Floor 25. He arrived just in time to catch sight of Morningstar, a face he recognized, conversing with someone else, a face he didn't.

"Morningstar," he greeted him. His eyes darted to Freyd and nodded. "Hello."

There was a brief moment where he stood there, waiting to gauge their reactions. It wasn't every day somebody with an orange cursor waltzed into a raid group in broad daylight. But he figured these weren't your every day folk. Assuming there were no immediate rejections to his presence, he'd help himself to his share of chalk and consumables.

"An urgent message from Morningstar huh?" Wulfrin said as he finished up his work at his forge. He looked over the message curiously. Outside of some basic coordinates, there wasn't much to go off. "Dragon hunting. Sounds fun and a good chance to practice for the upcoming raid boss."

Wulfrin packed up his gear and set out towards Floor 25. When he arrived he was shocked to see an orange player chatting with Morningstar and Freyd. From what he knew about the cursors, orange meant that player had done some sort of crime against another player or important NPCI suppose if Freyd and Morningstar are cool with it, there isn't much need to worry. Still better keep my guard up.

"So dragon hunting," Wulfrin said making his presence known. "This part of that Dragon Hunter's quest line?"

The swordsman looked strangely like Freyd, if you ignored the obvious hair and eye color difference. Wulfrin had inherited one of Freyd's old armors in preparation for the raid, a set of tight fitting charcoal travel leathers with a weather proof overcoat that seemed to flit away at the edge of vision. His sword Icingdeath, another gift from Freyd, emitted its trademark dry ice like mist from its scabbard at his side. His phoenix familiar, Solaris perched on his shoulder ready to hunt.

NIGHT: ???
NIGHT: why's dragon hunting considered urgent

her messages did not warrant a reply.

night had leaned forward, on the edge of her seat as she rummaged through her inventory for the proper supplies. the twenty-fifth, last she checked, was particularly greedy in terms of what it beckoned from the player base -- either they went in with the right offerings, or they became one themselves. once she'd decided her stock adequate enough for the raid, she moved forward, towards the teleporter from her home, and dissipated with the light that consumed her.

in due time, she would find that chalk, her way home. the tint of orange caught her attention instead, as she was searching for star, but almost as though it was a marker towards where the gathering would be located at. then, night squinted, because she hadn't pinned the orange player as one to show up in such a group.

wasn't he... missing(?) for a while(??)

night only crept up behind him, to make sure she was certain she got the right person in mind. beyond that, there was the feast laid out for them to partake of. with a call to their ringleader, she squatted and began their preparation ritual.

Dragons?
Hunting?

Well, sign Koga up, you didn't even need to state that it was an urgent request. The man had hardly registered that part of the message before heading out the door, his snow-furred companion right on his heels, eager at the prospect of hunting, despite not knowing what their prey was.

Their arrival to Floor 25 was met with about as much fanfare as usual. Read as: negligible. Sure the main settlement was somewhat crowded with players and NPCs, but nobody paid much attention to the lone swordsman. His arrival to the Labyrinth entrance was only slightly more exciting.

Koga recognized Freyd among the tiny crowd almost instantly, as well as Morningstar. The other two though, Koga didn't know. Especially not the orange player, who indeed gave him pause.

But more importantly...was that NIGHT?

The woman was creeping up behind the orange player. Quite carefully.

And so Koga crept up behind her. Even more careful.

"Why are we sneaking?"

Also don't mind him as he sneaked some food into his mouth from everyone's respective feasts. If they were offering, why not right?

"Who's tense?" Morningstar grinned, glad to see that Freyd had received his message. He wasn't sure there was a more reliable player in the game, and was always happy to work with him. It wasn't only because he brought snacks every time they quested together (although, that fact was probably a contributor). "No idea who'll turn up," he munched down on a snack of his own, noticing another soon-to-be party member approaching, "but I figured my chances of getting lost would lessen in a group."

Pinball was an unexpected guest. The orange cursor continued to linger above the man's head. There was no getting rid of it, unfortunately. Still, Star saw no reason he should be unwelcome. "Hey," he said, unsure of what to say or how Freyd would react. He recalled the Whisper's pragmatic view on those who took to murder, and wondered if a reformed killer could change it.

A little bell rang in his ear, yelling at him to look at his messages. One missed from NIGHT. He didn't open it, but a quick scan of the first few words made him think it was something along the lines of "why's dragon hunting considered urgent."

Speak of the devil.

NIGHT crept up to the group at a snail's pace, with Koga not far behind her. Okay. Odd. "Urgent, remember?" He shouted to them, half-joking and half-hoping they would actually speed up.

"Thanks for coming. Lots of walking ahead of us, so I'll keep it short. There's a big dragon in there somewhere and we're going to kill it. My message said urgent, only because I'm on a time crunch. Beach volleyball in two days. Let's do this," he clapped, and took his first step into the maze.

They were greeted by quite the welcoming committee. Four zombified men dawdled towards them, groaning violently with each awkward movement. "NPCs, by the looks of their clothing. Sad."

Star knew that deaths in the labyrinth weren't necessarily the end, but he had never actually encountered any reanimated players or NPCs before. "Must have gotten lost in here or something," he said. With a succession of swings, he took down two of the four.

  • 2 weeks later...

He didn't enjoy the eyes on him, but then again he didn't like company, either. He was going a bit out of his comfort zone with this one, but if it meant getting another quest on his belt, he didn't mind. The others didn't seem super hostile towards him either, and that was a plus. The last thing he wanted was to get jumped by a group of frontliners. So far most of them hadn't even acknowledged his existence. Pinball took that as an absolute win.

No sooner had the party embarked on their journey were they jumped by a gaggle of undead dudes. And dudes was a pretty appropriate thing to call them. Morningstar wasted no time shredding through Jack and Jim, but he left behind John and Archibald. Pinball cleaned up, finishing the job. They barely had a sliver of health between them. He put a blade between the eyes of each. His knives disappeared again beneath his cloak, and he continued on.

"Two days?  How lost were you planning to get?"  Before Freyd could press further, a gaggle of other players had gathered.  All but one rather glaring exception were already familiar to him.  The fact that NIGHT was creeping up on him from behind made him instantly tense that things were about to go sideways.  Koga's less than sneaky sneaking, by comparison, was confounded by his endlessly grumbling stomach.  You'd think he might have been Crozeph in disguise, but no.   Freyd had already checked.

One eye on their surroundings, another on Pin, whose name only became known once the party was officially form.  He'd had to borrow a third spare from the now-defunct One-Eyed Jack while Star was busy dispatching him, just to keep up with everything going on.  Their goal was obvious, easily visible high above, yet stymied by the maze doing its thing to turn them in every other direction.

"Err... nice work," he offered, as the last of the wayward zombie mobs fell.  "Look, no offense, but this is hardly the place for certain kinds of uncertainties.  I'm thinking it might be best of we clarify the spinning orange elephant in the room.  Some of you seem like you might know this guy.  Anyone want to vouch for him, before we keep moving?"  He kept to himself that the bells rung by that particular name were not associated with the most stellar reputation. Quite the opposite.

Wulfrin silently listened to the, rather vague in his opinion, plan for this quest of theirs. It wasn't long before the group had set foot into the maze before them. Wulfrin pulled out a piece of chalk that he had picked up coming in, having figured they would be entering, and began to mark symbols on the wall that would help lead them out once they were done. Solaris was keeping just below the top of the walls, their normal trick of tag teaming situations like this proving to be unusable. Wulfrin pushed to the front of the group as the last undead fell. Maybe the orange player wont be so bad.

"Never met him before," Wulfrin responded to Freyd's question. He peered down a nearby corridor taking a sharp left from where they had entered. In the distance, Wulfrin could spot a massive tower with an entrance at its base down a web filled corridor. "On another note, I think I found that tower we're looking for."

Just as he said that Wulfrin spotted movement amongst the webs, followed by a freak shift like something teleporting. It was arachnid in form and the inner Dungeon Master shuddered.

"And it looks like we've got a few phase spiders between us and it."

"why are we sneaking?"

she'd almost fallen over at the sudden surprised. instead night simply jumped, turned to notice koga, and then shoot him a glare. not that she was going to hold him accountable for anything, but beyond partaking in their ritual, the group started to head down the labyrinth.

the lone orange in the group proved himself, once again, to be just as efficient as she'd remembered him being.

no one else had sounded off on the worries of being around the said crystal, except freyd. night shot her hand up. "sure. pin it on me." the last time they'd been in proximity, he hadn't done anything else either. just the item. it would probably be the same today.

then there was the other stranger in the group, the one she was concerned with the most out of all who'd showed up. he'd pointed out the towers fast, though to be completely honest, she would've started looking for dragons instead.

the spiders were the unwelcome surprise though. with a help, she'd cut through them, eyes shut -- when she opened them, they were gone. almost like they never existed at all.

"no we don't," night corrected, trying her best not to think about what else was about the labyrinth. how did yuki manage to hide in here for so long? "no we don't. let's keep moving. star was right, this is urgent."

NIGHT jumped, and shot him a glare. The man suppressed a chuckle in return. He didn't feel like getting stabbed. Yet. Who knew what their prey had planned for them. Hopefully Morningstar did, considering he was calling the pair over. Koga waved back and made a little bit of effort to quicken his pace over to the others.

Before Koga even had a chance to comment on the 'time-crunch' though, Freyd beat him to the punch. No matter, Koga was aiming to get all this over with before dinner time. Maybe even elevensies, if they were fast enough.

Skele-bois, spiders, the tower. If Koga had known this quest was going to be so involved he might've come a bit more prepared. But with a group like this embarking on the journey, the whole quest seemed to breeze on by. He couldn't help but take a quick glance over at NIGHT though, as she dispatched the creepy crawlies. Though he teased her about it often, he knew she had a very real fear of insects. Or maybe it was just a serious amount of discomfort. Either way, they things were dust now, and she seemed fine. Hell, she had even vouched for the orange player only moments earlier. Up until then, Koga had kept a cautious hand on katana. It was still there now, but at least not in preparation to defend himself against another player.

"Alright then, we're tower-bound," Koga said, looking up in the direction that Wulfrin had indicated. That'd been easy. The climb was not. "I swear to God, if I see another staircase in my lifetime, it'll be too soon," Koga had panted after they'd finally reached the top. Okami collapsed beside him. How many steps had that been? He'd lost count after about four-fifty.

"So...anyone see the lizard we're hunting?" Koga asked after catching his breath and lifting his hand to shield his eyes from the sun.

And the dust cloud that the dragon kicked up as it landed. Koga craned his neck upwards to look at the massive being as it spread its wings and looked down at the players with the menacing glare only a forty foot tall reptile could. "Found 'er."

The matron roared at them, and the battle began. Okami and Koga dashed forward together, each chasing after their own targets. The white wolf sank its teeth into the minimally guarded flesh of the dragon's heel while Koga launched himself straight towards the dragon's face, hammering the pommel of his katana into its snout as he drew the sword.

Spoiler

Dragon’s Scales: The Matriarch’s scales protect it, not allowing its MIT to drop below 110.
Pureblood: The boss is immune to Hypnosis, Lullaby, Misperception, Paralysis, Freeze as well as the Familiar’s Grappling Skill.
Tail Swipe: When rolling MD 9-10, the Matriarch will use its tail as a whip to attack all of the party, dealing 120 unmitigatable damage and lower everyone’s energy by 10.
Piercing Gaze: On a CD 10+, the boss will paralyze the player with the lowest hate for a turn before attacking normally. This skill cannot activate alongside <<Tail Swipe>> or <<Hellfire>>.
Vicious Stomp: In the case of a CD 6-9 and LD 10+, the Matriarch will stomp the ground, lowering the entire party’s EVA by 1 for two turns. This effect does not stacked and any further activations will refresh its duration.
Preparation: Every four turns, the boss will attack the player with the highest hate for 100 DMG before flying up in the air, preparing to bombard the players with fire on its next turn.
Hellfire: After staying in <<Preparation>> for a turn uninterrupted, the boss will breathe out fire on the players, dealing 300 unmitigatable DMG and applying 24 Burn DMG for the next two turns.
Bring Down The House: If the Matriarch is still in <<Preparation>>, players can deal 750 DMG to it to knock it out of the sky. Doing so will prevent it from using <<Hellfire>> and deal an additional 250 unmitigatable DMG to it.

Zombies, and spiders, and staircases; the worst of it was behind them. If NIGHT was willing to vouch for Pinball, Star imagined that nobody else would find it worthwhile to argue. Now, all they had to do was kill the big scary dragon. It slammed into the ground, flinging dirt and dust their way, and causing a mini tremor. "Hm. Bigger than I imagined."

Koga and his wolf wasted no time strategizing, instead opting for the no nonsense hit-it-till-it-dies method. Star liked his style and followed in his footsteps (although without a familiar of his own). He bolted forth, speeding around the other two and prioritizing a separate target altogether. He aimed for the dragon's back leg, thinking that without anything to stand on, it might not be capable of fighting back so easily.

He swung wide, but the impact of his sword left little more than a weak scratch. It's scales would take time to cut through.

He wasn't sure why NIGHT vouched for him. His presence had been mostly glossed over, so when Freyd brought him up, he figured there was going to be a good chance he'd be asked to leave. That would have been fine, too. He couldn't - wouldn't - ever complain about that. He'd never met half the people gathered, he'd only met Morningstar once before, and it was fairly presumptuous of him to show up for a quest like that in the first place. But NIGHT spoke up for him, and that settled that. Pinball himself said nothing in response, and continued on to the fight.

The dragon was massive, and had the HP to boot. He momentarily wished he'd packed crystals before vanishing in a cloud of shadow, and reappeared elsewhere, hurling knives into its flank. The blades landed clean, inflicting the Shadow Dragon Matriarch with a dazzling array of status effects, and stunning it, too. Gone were the days of Pinball's burst... but he'd assist in other ways, if he could at all help it. He danced backwards. With one hand, he equipped a new weapon. With the other, he spun the fresh blade into his palm.

Wulfrin knew only two other people on this quest, but if they were willing to accept the orange player, that was good enough for him. He turned his attention to the fight ahead as they ascended the stairs of the tower. Before long they were face to face with the dragon. Believe it or not, dragons are way more terrifying in person. Wulfrin watched as Morningstar, Koga, and Pinball leapt into action. Koga and their Wolf attacked from the front, Morningstar scurried around the back and slashed at what would be the dragon's Achilles heel. Pinball vanished and sent several knives into the dragon's hide. Wulfrin took the opening and slid under the beast, burrying the blade of Icingdeath into the dragon's underbelly. Wulfrin finished his slide just behind the dragon. He watched as ice completely encased the Matriarch.

"I think it's safe to say she's not having a good time," Wulfrin said as he readied another attack. "I don't think I've seen this many DoTs in one place before."

"what was the size of the dragon you were imagining...?"

the shadow matriarch was no larger than any of the dragons she'd seen before. this might as well have been part of the dragon hunter's anthology quest line after all. with three stacks of shatter, and an envy for the dots she hadn't thought to carry along, there was little reason for her to try and hold back her oath. so she rushed in, as the dragon staggered, head lowered as it started to skid to a half across the top of their tower.

night had hesitated, trying to figure the best distance to be away from the dragon to prevent a self-stagger if it ever got up before she thought possible of it. in her calculations, she'd nearly missed her strike. what echoes from her blade merely faded off in a haunting manner, longing to be forgotten, as she took to the sides to keep herself safe.

A pun?  That was supposed to be some sort of proof?  Freyd didn't much appreciate the casual dismissal to such a potential threat, but he also wasn't going to turn away a possible ally.  It was his nature to assess and mitigate threats.  He didn't know Pinball, or whether he ought to be treated as one, but Mari had changed his perspective on such marked players long ago.  Ever the pragmatist, he'd accept anyone in a group, provided they worked towards the common goal.

As the others piled on against the overgrown shadow gecko, he hung back, waiting for an opening to grab aggro.  Pin's surprise attack rendered the point moot and earned him a notch in the 'useful' column of Freyd's ever-growing mentally sheet.  It also meant he could afford to cut loose, at least during the initial assault.  Racing through the quickly-fading cloud of shadows left by Pin's disappearing trick, Freyd burst into a full, flat-out run, leaping high at the last moment to catch the dazed dragon in middle of the chest with enough force to compel it to regurgitate a small jet of stomach bile.  Bouncing off the giant beast's chilled, crackling, burning, sizzling, blighted and otherwise miserable hide, he skid to a stop a few feet away from Wulfrin, fingers dragging behind to slow his momentum and be ready to trigger another run.

"Dragon indigestion, granted!  Can we call that a new DoT, even if it doesn't last more than a turn?"

  • Pureblood | The boss is immune to Hypnosis, Lullaby, Misperception, Paralysis, Freeze as well as the Familiar’s Grappling Skill.

  • Vicious Stomp | In the case of a CD 6-9 and LD 10+, the Matriarch will stomp the ground, lowering the entire party’s EVA by 1 for two turns. This effect does not stacked and any further activations will refresh its duration.
  • Preparation | Every four turns, the boss will attack the player with the highest hate for 100 DMG before flying up in the air, preparing to bombard the players with fire on its next turn.
  • Hellfire | After staying in <<Preparation>> for a turn uninterrupted, the boss will breathe out fire on the players, dealing 300 unmitigatable DMG and applying 24 Burn DMG for the next two turns.
  • Bring Down The House | If the Matriarch is still in <<Preparation>>, players can deal 750 DMG to it to knock it out of the sky. Doing so will prevent it from using <<Hellfire>> and deal an additional 250 unmitigatable DMG to it.

"I dunno, like, a medium?"

It was bigger than his old friends on Floor Two, but considerably smaller than his not-so-old friend, Wushen. He arbitrarily put it at an XL; a Starbucks Trenta, one might say.

He had to remember to thank whoever it was that stunned the big dinosaur, since it narrowly saved him from being squished by a scaly foot. He winced, feeling the wind push him back as the winged beast fell. It made for a good chance to attack, too, since it couldn't really move anymore. He hacked at it with his longsword, chuckling a bit at Freyd's quip. There was something about the scene that just looked terrible.

Note to self: neglect to tell mom about the time you sawed off a dragon's leg. It doesn't look good for you.

Pin's DoTs seemed almost more effective than Star's attacks. He was a little bit jealous.

With Star and Pinball, the three players unleashed the opening salvo against the dragon, chunking the flying lizard's HP bar for almost a quarter of its health. Wulfrin, NIGHT and Freyd were close behind with the follow-up, reducing her HP almost into the yellow.

All in all, a good start. And with the dragon only just recovering from Pin's stunning blow, she was going to go come crashing to the ground before she even had a chance to act.

Tsuki no Hikari returned to it's sheath for just a moment, as shadow and smoke gathered around Koga before he all but disappeared, rushing forward almost faster than the eye could see, and his sword cleaved into the dragon's forelegs. Despite the hard armor of it's scales, the angry red glowing mark appeared, signalling a successful attack.

"Dragon indigestion sounds like more of a problem for us than for for her," Koga said, a disgusted frown on his face as he reappeared near Freyd, and imagined just what that would look like. "Welcome to the big leagues," he added to Wulfrin. 'Where we joke about dragons having the runs. Very serious. Very professional. Very demure.'

Shadow Dragon Matriach takes 550 fallen damage

The Shadow Dragon Matriarch was fairly underwhelming compared to the amount of preparation they had put into hunting it. It was better to be safe than sorry, sure, but the big scary beast was nearly dead after just two attacks from each player. Pinball's knives flashed into his palms. The Matriarch was far, so he threw both blades. They landed where he'd wanted to, but not for as much as he'd hope. Fallen and Holy only activated when they felt like it, it sometimes seemed. He leaped backwards, keeping as much distance between him and the dragon as he could. He was sure there was some fire breath AOE he could get hit by, but he'd rather not be within range to get gobbled up and digested by the Shadow Dragon if he could at all help it. He was squishy, and he was used to playing around that limitation. Especially in a party full of strangers, it was best that he just focused on sticking with what he knew best.
