[PP - F12] We're In Reel Trouble | <<Just for the Halibut>> [Assisted]

Recommended Posts

Another fishing quest? ...Alright. Ciela let out an exasperated sigh and got ready for the day. She was NOT a fisherman. But she knew two people she could get to tag along.

As per usual she always packed some sort of meal for everyone so she went ahead and prepped that. She planned to invite Freyd and knew he would most likely be come along so she packed a little something extra  for him and Persi.

To: Wulfrin & Freyd
From: Ciela

I've got a task for you both. We're doing another quest together. Meet me on Floor 12. Feel free to bring a fourth and your fishing rods. <3

She knew she'd most likely pique the interest of Wulfrin and Freyd with that message. She wondered who the fourth would be though. She knew this one would be interesting for sure. Ciela whipped up something quick for her to take on the go and handed a treat off to Perlita. She then packed away the groups snacks and meal to be enjoyed later. She and Perlita rushed out the door and headed to Floor 12.

When she arrived she was greeted by a marshland. She looked around and immediately realized she was lost. She had no clue where she was going. Great. As she turned around she was approached by two fishermen and began chatting with them as she waited for the rest of her party to arrive.

Papers lay scattered throughout Freyd's office; the mechanism of logistical planning strewn about the room as evidence of an impending raid.  Even their sheer volume belied the truth, as tenfold more information hovered in digital format above, invisible save to his own keen eyes.  A dozen exhausted saucers stacked three cups high apiece played hide and seek behind and beneath piles, some folded like origami in an effort to alleviate the maddening drudgery of coordinating so many unknowns.  Would they have enough tanks?  Or the right types?  How to mesh fractious personalities and volatile egos into viable teams?  What if Persi ate all the raid buffs again?!

*groan*

*PING*

An eyebrow raised, casually tossing aside floating windows in search of whichever one dared disturb his exhausted brooding.

"Ciela?  Halibut.  Hrm."  His first thought was to invite Elora along, truly motivated by a perfectly reasonable desire to see her in that swimsuit again.  Alas, that day had gone a bit awry and he suspected she might be keep on returning to their private beach again quite so soon, or without armor.

"I suppose I could... wait a minute."  A wry smile crept over the Whisper's face as he stared at the flame sizzling slightly in fear within the confines of its hooded lantern - he preferred to think of it as cowled.

Billowing smoke came from the fourth-floor house that sigaled that he was hanging out at his abode. Front of the house was darkened but the back of the house was lit up pretty well. He hadn't opened up his shop for quite some time. Most of his items were sitting casually behind a glass case and he sighed ever so slightly staring at empty glasses that sat there. The only thing that seemed animate in the house was Pingu the Penguin that seemed to be acting like she was a ninja. Per always she was snooping around trying to find a treat. Kil, on the other hand, was filling a glass of hot cocoa. "Stop messin around..." Caught! The penguin stared at her master and let out a whine.

"If you eat too much, you'll get sick." Not true in the least since she was pixels and the sort, but it worked about 60 percent of the time.

A message notification.

He blankly stared at the window pop up and let it sit there for a few minutes. Hand shook a bit as he had trouble trying to accept it. Who was the sender? He wondered a bit before giving into curiosity. The word Freyd popped up and a frown soured his face. Though being friends, he was reminded by the fire with the ship. This man, he thought. He read the contents of the message and there it was, the mention of being on fire. He would never live it down if Freyd had anything to do with it. He thought about declining the invitation, but the mention of a job and a new weapon seemed to catch his eye.

He patted the head of the penguin and stared at her for a second. "Stay here, okay? I'll leave out a few treats for you. You know how to open doors so just make sure you don't eat the shop out."

He vacated the shop and headed toward the teleport to find himself at the designated location. Little did he know, the naughty penguin followed.

Wulfrin arrived to the location stated in the message. He had his fishing gear with him, but being uncharted territory for him he was also fully kitted for a fight. His attire consisted of his new armor, a set of tight fitting charcoal traveling leathers that seems to flit away at the edge of sight. He had the hood pulled up, but pulled it back as he approached the group. He hadn't realized how much the new armor made him look like Freyd, but that was to be suspected as this was supposedly one of his old armors. His sword Icingdeath hung from his hip with the subtle mist generated from its ice cold blade coming from the top of the scabbard. He looked more like he was going towards some big boss fight than a simple fishing trip.

"So I heard we were fishing today?" Wulfrin asked. "I managed to get caught up in my preparations for the raid, so now it's just grind where ever I can to get as much experience as I can before the fight."

His attention turned to the fourth player, one he did not recognize. "Names Wulfrin," He said extending a hand. "Welcome to our merry band of misfits, even if its just for the day."

Ciela was speaking to Renault as her other party members arrived. She waved them over. "Hi Honey! Hey Freyd! Who's the tag along?" Ciela smiled at Kiluia and extended a hand out to him. "My names Ciela, it's so nice to meet you." Ciela's attention was drawn away from Kil and went to Perlita, who went to a little penguin that seemed to be following their new companion. "Who's this little cutie?" Ciela got down on her knees and offered the penguin a little fishy croissant. After a moment she got up and addressed everyone.

"Well, this here fisherman is Renault. We had the option to help him or another fisherman named Derrick. Renault here is gonna help us catch the Lurker." Ciela gestured toward Renault. "Tell them what you told me."

Renault cleared his throat, "Well, first we have to make our way to Dayurga, where the monster is rumored to lay dormant." Renault motioned for the party to follow and led them toward the settlement of Dayurga. As they walked toward their destination Renault caught them up on the rumors and legends. "There's a legend passed between many fisherman, an angler fish that is known as the Lurker. The rumor is that catching, defeating, and offering the beast to the Gods of the Swamp will return peace and protection to our waters. I'm not strong enough to do it on my own so I've been seeking the help of adventurers to aid me in the catch of the century. So will you do it?"

Ciela nodded, "I'll help! Sounds fun." She looked at the rest of the party, waiting for their answers.

"Glad I packed up for a fishing trip!" Wulfrin said eagerly to the fisherman. "Lead us to the location."

It took a bit to get to the large open lake, but they did eventually get there. Renault set up his own fishing gear near a broken down pier and cast a line into the murky waters. Wulfrin followed suit, setting up a bit further down the bank to avoid tangling the lines. His bobber drifted up and down with the waves. There was definitely something churning down in the depths. After a few moments of watching, Wulfrin's bobber was pulled beneath the surface. Wulfrin pulled with all his might to bring whatever it was to the surface.

"Here we go!" Wulfrin shouted. "Something's coming to the surface be ready!"

With a massive heave Wulfrin pulled his quarry to the surface. Landing very angrily with Wulfrin's line still dangling from its horrifying jaw was what would best be described as an angler fish with legs. This new creature's name was not in fact The Lurker, but instead was a Fossil Fish. Wulfrin scrambled to prepare for an offensive, scrambling to juggle sword and fishing rod.

His eyes looked at the group forming and his little stowaway. Pingu had made her appearance since she had been stuck in the shop for quite some time with her master. A sigh escaped his lips as Ceila spoke up about his penguin and himself. "Pleased to meet you. I'm Kiluia. Or Kil. Guildmate and friend of Freyd. And this is Pingu. My little monster who has a mind of a child." He sneered at the penguin but smiled at her genuinely as she kept his sanity with someone to talk with.

Having been through this quest, he had looked at the NPC and still the dialog was still the same for fishing. It was indeed something that he was familiar with. As the introductions were done, he would make way with rest until they made it to the spot in question. Eyes lingered upon the group then noticed Wulfrin fishing. He stretched warming himself up before watching Wulfrin catch something. "And here we go!" He looked at the ancient fossil. Looked like this wasn't going to be the one and done.

His handwraps, despite being fragile, would ignite in a white light as he charged at the Ancient Fossil. Body would flash in a second in front of the creature and would blast the fish square in the face. Maybe he would call this move Blinding Fist.

"She's adorable, and it looks like Perlita has taken quite a liking to her." Ciela grinned at Perlita, noticing how well she and Pingu were getting along—quite literally swimmingly. She chuckled softly at her own pun. After a moment, she remembered something. "Oh! Freyd, before I forget," she said, rummaging through the small basket on her hip. She pulled out a Fondante's Inferno tin. "I made some honey buns for you and Persi. No special buffs yet, but one day!" Ciela smiled at Freyd before tucking the basket away.

As Wulfrin set up his gear, Ciela grabbed the fishing rod she’d bought for trips like this and settled next to him. When he reeled in a hideous humanoid anglerfish, she gagged silently. Kil leapt into action, dealing heavy damage to it. Ciela let out a howl to draw the creature’s attention. "Come get me, you fishy freak!" she yelled, raising her shield and bracing for the attack.

"Oh!  Thank you," the Whisper replied, genuinely surprised and unexpectedly touched by Ciela's generous gift.  "I'll make sure to share them with friends after we're done here.  The swamp air doesn't tend to mix well with pastries, so please forgive me if I store them away for now."  Sincerity proved true as his eyes gazed longingly at the tin, before slender fingers banished them to the safety of his inventory.

"It's good to see you all again, and nice to have an opportunity to pull Kil out to enjoy... well, it's air, even if perhaps not the freshest."  A friendly and familiar nod greeted Renault.  The two were well-acquainted, Freyd having spent considerable time honing his own fishing skills under the man's tutelage.

Having also recently completed a variation of this quest with Elora and Katoka only just recently, Freyd found himself daydreaming about the lovely lagoon they'd found in the deep recesses of this forsaken swamp.  And the swimwear.  That had definitely been the best part, at least until the Lurker and his fossil fish crew showed up.  Ciela's cries soon roused him from his reverie, realizing that battle was already on.

"Just one?  Bah."

The moment the lone fish-man-thing turned to face Ciela, Freyd just bopped it on the head, causing its remaining health to crash. The mob itself just disintegrated, like someone spilling a bag of marbles on the ground, except as digital death bits.

"Oh, don't worry.  There will be plenty more."

Wulfrin gave up trying to enter combat when Freyd stepped up to face the humanoid angler. The Fossil Fish's fate was sealed as Freyd simply bopped the monster on the head. Wulfrin shrugged and cast his line back into the lake. He watched intently for any movement in the bobber, which considering the monsters lurking in its depths, was rather calm. The bobber sank beneath the surface a handful of moments later, a tremendous force pulling it down. Wulfrin once again was doing his own miniature combat with his catch, attempting to tire it out enough to bring ashore. With another heave he managed to get the beast up out of the water for his companions to decimate. Freyd looked a bit disgusted that the beasties were only coming up one at a time. Too be fair, he is an AoE specialist. Single target fights aren't really his thing.

"Another one for the slaughter," Wulfrin said, breaking the line free from the fish man's jaw. "Still not the one we're looking for though."

Seemed that the party was going for a long run after the second fossil fish. Perhaps a third time was going to be the charm. He glanced at Freyd listening to his comment about air and he spoke slightly. "Or the fishest air." Noting the marine animal that was before them. Not like he could help with a sorry pun, but it was begging to be stated. With Pingu occupied with Perlita, he wouldn't have to worry about the penguin throwing rocks or tripping around the party. She could be classified as a calamity of accidents if one wasn't careful around the penguin. No one really knew if the penguin was doing it on purpose or genuinely accident prone. No one but Kil that was.

Kil weaved between his fellow mates as the  2nd ancient fish had soon made its presence. With his eyes widened, he would perform the same attack previously with another blinding punch to the face of the fish. He hadn't really fought in such awhile, but he sure appreciated the upgrade in weaponry from Freyd. "Thanks for the new change." He looked over at Freyd. It was almost worth forgiving that fire incident. Almost.

Ciela glanced over at Wulfrin with an encouraging smile and a thumbs up. "You're doing great, sweetie! Keep it up!" she cheered. After Kiluia made a pun, Ciela couldn’t help but snicker. "That was actually pretty funny," she admitted, her attention drifting to her little otter and Kil's penguin as they hunted small fish and played together. She giggled at the adorable scene.

When Kiluia unleashed his attack, Ciela took a moment to focus. She managed to distract the fish and then released her own attack, which seemed to do significantly more damage than before. A surge of pride filled her, and she puffed her chest slightly, pleased with how far she'd come.

Turning to Freyd and Wulfrin, Ciela smiled softly at the two. "It’s on you two now. Let’s make sure we fish up the big boy next time, yeah?" She gave them both a thumbs up, preparing herself for the next attack to come, whether it was the Lurker or another fossil fish.

Groaning at Kiluia's joke, he couldn't keep a smile from creeping onto his lips. Ciela seemed to appreciate it more, also demonstrating her prowess for the group and striking their enemy for good measure, her bubbly personality already egging the rest of them on.

"What the?  You still have the penguin?!"

Pivoting on the spot, his one leg not appearing to shift, but planting his position firmly on the ground, Freyd's other foot whipped and spun to catch the man-fish in the gills to a horrible horrible warbling sound mixed with the shattering of glass, mere inches above the cuddly tuxedo-wearing bird's oblivious head.  Blue crystalline shards sprayed in a wide arc over the water, shimmering like the dying vestiges of fireworks before dimming down to non-existence.

"Am I actually going to get to fish here," he grinned back Wulfrin's way.  "Or do you get to have all the fun?"

It took a subtle clearing of the NPC's throat to remind the rest of them that Renault was even still present.

"Oh, right.  You.  What do you do here again?"

The grizzled fisherman balked, then grunted, accepting that he wasn't much use in combat.

"The Lurker tends to appear along the western edges of Dayurga village.  We might try using the bird as bait.  Doesn't look like it's good for much else."

"Depends," Wulfrin said with a shrug and a sly smile. "You gunna step up and cast a line?"

Wulfrin moved further down the bank towards the town's western edge. Perhaps it was the poor choice of locale. Then he cocked his head and turned his attention to their less than helpful NPC tag along.

"Which bird?" Wulfrin said with a fire in his eyes. Solaris was sharing in his frustration. "Not that it matters. I'm not using either of them as bait."

Wulfrin sent his line flying into the lake before them. There was little movement from the bobber as the lake's surface fell eerily calm. For a moment it seemed like Wulfrin had maybe blundered enough to let someone else take a crack, but just before he went to retrieve his line, it began to tug violently. With a labored grunt he brought up yet another singular fossil fish.

"Apologies Mr. AoE man," Wulfrin said with a smirk. "Looks like we're going for the slow burn on this one."

The penguin ran in dear fright as she witnessed Freyd's leg fly pass her head. It squealed hiding behind her master and he couldn't stop laughing at the penguin. Tears almost ran down his face as he had to take a moment to absorb the penguins terrified face. Taking a breath, he would look over at Freyd. "Of course, she may not look like it, but she is fun to be around. Often finding herself in snowmen when the kids roll her around."

Red hues would watch over Wulfin fishing before he reeled in another Ancient Fossil. Well, at least he was consistent, he thought. "Slow burn it is!" He kicked off the ground with a little dust forming behind him.

Just as the fish made land fall, his fist collided in spectacular fashion striking the face of the creature with a right hook causing a flash of light to daze the creature in its spot. He watched as it tumbled over stunned from the sudden attack. Too bad for you little fish, he thought as he stood there from the dust cloud while his fist finished emitting a light.

Ciela let out a deep sigh of frustration as Wulfrin pulled up yet another fossil fish. She was starting to suspect that all his boasting about being a great fisherman was just him inflating his ego. It was beginning to seem like they were in an endless loop of reeling in ancient fish without making any real progress.

With a weary sigh, Ciela launched another attack at the fossil fish, landing a solid hit. She stepped back, shaking her head. "A slow burn, huh? Have you been sneaking peeks at my romance novels again, honey?" she teased with a giggle, trying to lighten the mood. Glancing over at Freyd, she rolled her eyes playfully. "Well, here we go again. Time to take down a third one! This totally isn’t repetitive at all. Nope. Not. At. All." Her sarcasm was clear, she decided to use the frustration as a way to stay motivated. No matter what.

A sweeping kick sprayed the last vestiges of the previous fossil fish in a high arc, squarely into the new one's bulbous eyes, sparking as they hit whatever that weird dangly lantern thing was meant to be.  Changing the trajectory of his movements at the last moment, he whirled and slammed his fist full force into the thing's left knee, causing to explode.  The mobs flailed, unable to maintain any sense of balance as it toppled and fell onto Renault before the rest of its crumbled into yet another cloud of sparkly death dust.

"Moar," he roared, before dropping his voice back down to normal levels.  "No, seriously.  This is gonna take forever if we keep lining them up single file.  Maybe... I dunno... actually use some bait?"

Eyes burning with sudden inspiration, Freyd reached into Ciela's shadow like it was some sort of portable hole, drawing out the tiny, shriveled husk of a golden glove with red, painted fingernails for feet.  Any other fishers among them might recognize it as a pale imitation of a gilded hand from Nemo's wandering wonderland.

"Here.  Try this.  Maybe they're attracted to money?  Or shinies?  Or have some sort of weird finger fetish?"  Spoken like a true appraiser, and complete nutjob.

Begrudgedly, Wulfrin took the offered bait. He wasn't sure what exactly a glove was going to do in this situation, but he figured it was worth a try. At this point Wulfrin was just getting way frustrated. He had already attempted thrice to catch this damned Lurker and thrice he had failed. Now he was on his fourth and pretty sure Kayaba was watching him from somewhere laughing at his terrible luck. When the line began to tug Wulfrin knew what it was without even having to bring it to the surface. Without a word or strain, he pulled up the single Fossil Fish. In a huff, he dismissed his fishing rod and moved away from the shore.

"Tried the bait," Wulfrin grumbled. "Didn't work. Tried moving down the bank, didn't work. All I have to show are these damned fossil fish. Anyone else wanna take a go once this clown is taken out?"

Wulfrin drew his blade and prepared for combat. He knew his chances of getting to blow off some of his frustrations would be slim, but at the very least he could catch the next one that comes around. If he couldn't fish up the beast, he at least wanted to get one hit in on something this trip.

Rinse and repeat. That was what Kiluia was used to doing when it was this type of quest that brought up a single target of misfortune. It didn't disappoint when he saw another another ancient fossil fish appear. However, at this rate, he might burn out of his energy before actually getting to the Lurker that they needed. It was a good thing Freyd was there too as he helped smash the sea creature just as well.

The young man repeated his action only to slam his left foot into the side of the creature igniting another blow fused with light to stun the beast. It caused the same damage as prior with a blow to cause it to stun as well. After fulfilling his strike, he wouldn't interject with Wulfin's ability to fish. The other two were doing just fine without his little remarks. Poor guy was hearing it from most of their group already.

"At least it's productive?" He thought positively in that direction. They could have been bored. The penguin wandered over to the open water and peered into it with her flipper touching the ice-cold water. She was stirring trouble to see if she could get the Lurker to come play as well.

"What the...?"  Freyd was starting to feel bad for the poor red-coated party mascot, his fishing skills suffering their own brand of self-named tale.  Had Wulfrin taken the Foraging quest by accident, but no one had the heart to tell him the truth?!  Kiluia was in fine form, though, slapping each fish out of the water like a hungry bear eager to get its pesky kids off its back.  This latest one was practically hurled right at him, leading Freyd to speculate that his old friend might be having a little fun at his expense - which was completely fair.

Sidestepping at the last moment, the Whisper snagger the thing's bottom lip, yanking upward with as much strength as his sword art could must - essentially jersey-ing the thing with its own super-stretchy gullet.

"Whatever you do," he offered by way of advice to the mob, "don't swallow."

A hard downward strike drove the thing's own lower jaw into its skull so hard that both shattered, the rest of it disintegrating instantly with an awkward, garbly warble.
