[PP-F22] The Lion, The Witch, and The Audacity of this... well... you know. | <<Witch of the West>> [Assisted]

Recommended Posts

Ciela had just closed up her shop for the day and decided it was the perfect time for her daily walk. Rather than heading straight home, she opted for a "shortcut" through the Forest of Memories, a route she often took because it reminded her of one of her favorite video games. Before entering the forest, she quickly messaged Wulfrin to let him know where she was, so he wouldn't worry. With Perlita by her side, Ciela entered the forest through one of the main paths. Almost immediately, she received a quest notification, but she dismissed it to deal with later.

As they walked, Ciela felt raindrops gently tapping her head. Looking up, she noticed a rain cloud forming above them. Not wanting to get drenched, she decided to head home. She started to pick up speed, but suddenly tripped over something and fell face-first into the mud. She let out an audible groan, What the hell did I trip on?!

She got up and inspected the object, which appeared to be a pile of leaves. After uncovering them, she was surprised to find a dusty old book beneath. Huh, a dusty book? She picked it up and sent out a message.

To: Wulfrin, Freyd, and Raidou
From: KnightessCiela

Hey, I just found this weird dusty book on the ground, covered in leaves. I think it might be connected to a quest, so I thought you all might want to help me figure it out. I'm deep in the Forest of Memories right now. Meet me here—I'll have Perlita guide you from the entrance closest to the teleport gate for Floor 22.

She could only hope they would arrive soon.  "Okay, Perlie, head to the entrance closest to Coral and bring everyone here." Perlita scampered off into the forest, heading to the spot Ciela told her to go to.

Wrestling with a single cup of tea, the somber stream poured through a nearby windowpane offering a glowing glare that offered the room some light. Hot steam escaping its top, it dances wistfully in the air, the nomad exhales causing it to twist and rush from its top. In his left a single leather bound book, on its bind the words 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe' yet its contents where nothing more then a vague retelling from memory. Authors in this place had to make due and reimagine their version of the tale, and Raidou couldn't help but taste the inconsistent recollection. The small cylinder in his hand clatters as he sets it down gently on an awaiting platter.

*plink*

The sound causes him to turn, seeking out what little of his HUD was visible. A small blue circle emboldened with an envelop flickers in and out, eluding to a message. Curious, the man removes his glasses and begins to wipe them with a soft grey cloth. A tap of his index sees it expand into a much larger window. "Ciela? Wrong number?" The man offered to the message as if it could respond to him, yet the confidants on its subject line confirmed his own guild member as a participant. "Perhaps Freyd gave her my contact details." The man comments to the empty room, lifting to his feet as the chair scrapes across the floor.

To his inventory, a singular red cloth folded neatly pulled from it in a flash of light. Grabbing a handful of the thing, he'd twist and cause it to flap like a flag in the wind. Around his shoulders, its tied and hangs there in its crimson blood red shade. The irony was thicker then water, as Raidou stepped but just out of the guild hall gate and found himself in the Forest of Memories. Activating <<Tracking>> on the name causes a massive 3 dimensional map to appear in front of him, showing the singular blue dot that a name hovered over, he'd find her but 30 paces to the south east.

*****

"You must be Ciela?" The red wanderer asked in calm and somber tone as if he was one of the many ghosts within these woods, light that pierced the veil finding itself on his lenses and shielding them from view.

Noting the names on the unexpected invite, Freyd dismissed the treasured black walnut bokken in his hands, allowing its fading form to retreat to his inventory.  He'd been practicing hard since he and Katoka began their lessons, keeping to himself in the guild hall's underused dojo.  Members of Firm Anima filled their days in the field, unless their passions tied them to their crafts.  The latter were also Kiluia's to manage, not his.  Operations & Intelligence had its hands full with other duties, including training up a crop of new recruits as agents.  He'd been spending what time could be spared from raid prep with them, and here doing this.  Though not affiliated with the guild, Wulfrin and Ciela were friends, and that was more than good enough a reason to answer their call, though part of him wondered where Ciela and Raidou had met.  The Red Wanderer would likely be there already, slipping about the world as he was wont to do; aptly named, and all.

A few brief taps swapped out his clothing for more traditional field wear, mandatory cowl included.  Tugging it into place, Freyd wondered how Raidou would react at seeing Wulfrin wearing his old armor, including the duplicate trademark.  Samael's Pride manifest around his hands, the hungry ribbon tearing at his digital flesh, as always.  Nothing was more insatiable than the void.  Only a fool or the most willful would consider wielding such a weapon.  He could practically hear Montjoy's voice ringing out from his shadow: why not both?!

Staring down at the shaded figure of himself, it waved back, reveling in refusal to follow the movements of its caster.  He chose not to yank its chain, seeing no purpose or need, and confident that he could if necessary.  Familiar woodlands were observed through the thing's umbra, Freyd tracking his friend with ease, and confirming his suspicions.  Ciela had found the book, which meant monkeys plus a highly irritable and often frazzled witch - one about to have yet another very bad day.

Stepping through that darkened neverland between worlds, Freyd reappeared an instant later, emerging to Ciela's sight as if he'd somehow been hiding behind Raidou all this time.

"Evening."  It was noon.  "Ever wonder how that thing is always dusty," he began, skipping all pretense and introductions, "especially given how its always left out in the rain?  Maybe it has something to do with that really nice dusty rain smell after a long period of drought?  Speaking of which, were we feeling the itch to spank some monkeys?"

His grin nearly split his cowl in twain.

Wulfrin was sitting on his small dock overlooking his fishing pond. The orders being placed at his shop had slowed down considerably, and he found himself more and more just wanting to enjoy the moments he had in the floating castle. After having spent the last several days getting ready for the raid, he was just looking for the chance to relax. *Ping*

A message hit his inbox. Wulfrin quickly scanned the contents once he saw who had sent it. Then he glanced at the names. A shiver ran down his spine when he took note of one of the names, Raidou. He had told Ciela of his recent adventure with Raidou, and if she included him in the invite, something serious must have happened. He quickly dismissed his fishing rod and donned his armor and weapon. With a hardy whistle, he summoned Solaris, his phoenix that liked to rest in his shop’s forge.

Wulfrin appeared from the shadows last. Not that he was trying to sneak up on the party mind you. Ever since Freyd had gifted Wulfrin the Fallen Angel Garb, he found him self naturally blending into the shadows. His blade being a dark black, save the silvered blade with a diamond edge that always had mist drifting off of it and hidden within its black scabbard, didn’t exactly help him radiate a friendly persona.

”Freyd. Raidou.” Wulfrin spoke making himself known. “Good to see you both again.”

”So,” Wulfrin said as he turned his attention to the dusty tome in his fiancés possession. “What’s with the book. I vote we just leave it behind. I’ve played DnD before and books like this always lead to some kind of evil witch or wizard.”

Ciela waved at Raidou with a smile. "That's me! Sorry for the sudden invite without an introduction. Wulfrin told me to reach out if I ever needed help with questing. I figured with you, Wulfrin, and Freyd, this whole thing would be a piece of cake."

Just then, Freyd appeared behind Raidou. Ciela greeted him with a wave. "Hey, Freyd-o! How's it going?" Moments later, Wulfrin joined the group and following behind him was Perlita. "So, I was on my afternoon walk and tripped over this book," Ciela explained, holding up the dusty tome. After a quick inspection, she realized it wasn't locked. She opened it and began to read. "Huh, there are pages missing," she noted, glancing up. "It looks like it's a recipe for a potion, but it's all torn up and incomplete."

As soon as Ciela closed the book, the storm around them intensified. The trees began to sway violently, and the wind whipped fiercely around them. She looked up just in time to see a funnel cloud forming overhead, and before she could react, it touched down and engulfed them. The tornado wasn’t painful, it was almost like it was meant to disorient them.

After a few moments, the tornado dissipated, revealing a towering castle on a cliff before them. The Forest of Memories was now far behind them. "Looks like we're not in Coral anymore, Perlie" Ciela looked to her otter then scanned their surroundings. "Well, the only way to go is up, I guess."

Letting sleeping dogs lie, the wanderer looks back to the growing populous on his flank. Freyd, in some new get up? And a Mini Freyd which causes Raidou to make a double take. "Wulfrin?" the man beckons in inquiry as Ciela cuts through the confusion like a knife. With every phrase offered Raidou would certainly have an answer to their frequently annoying 'neighbor' who was about as subtle as living next to a super villain. It was 'new experiment' this or 'death-ray' that with her. "It is a recipe for a potion, one that I have had innumerable amount of trouble cracking." The man remarks as he'd offer a hand to each of the players, given their time constraints from before this would include @Wulfrin.

"Kuzunoha, Raidou." he'd remark to each even if his hand was left open.

Eyes would immediately dance to Freyd as Ciela pondered the book in her grasp further. "She just doesn't know when to quit. Does she?" The more vocal and honest flow of thoughts. "You'd think after losing 100's she would try something else. Why not dragons or lions, something that can actually find its way out of a wet paper bag." The nomad shakes his head 'no' removing his lenses with the most defeated slink of his shoulders, cleaning them again on his clothes as a form of habit. The winds begin and carry the lot to their most frequently visited location, and without warning Raidou's eyes would flare red denoting a skill being activated. Howl triggered, his voice takes several amounts in volume higher. Enough to make the tower tremble with every note.

"Susan! What is this? Third time this week!?"

He'd look to @KnightessCiela and offer the response as Monkeys began to pour out of the tower in droves. "You can toss that, you wont be able to keep it anyway." This would be the point his arms began to bleed out this red smoke that sinks to the floor like dry ice, and a singular gloved hand reaches behind his right shoulder and clasps an awaiting handle of two. A sharp pull sees an equally sharp sound of grinding, contrasting the screeching that loomed on darkened clouds above.

His eyes jump to Freyd and Wulfrin, "Time to spank the monkey." with the most serious deadpan, for that phrase only had one meaning to him.

A nod and smile sent Wulfrin's way while azure eyes beneath his cowl appreciated the fit of his old outfit on his friend.  It felt weird, but good weird.  "I should probably have mentioned, Wulfrin, to keep eyes on the back of your head.  You might not want certain people mistaking you for me, wearing that outfit.  If you take a close look at the fabric, you'll find it riddled with black on black bullseyes."  A joke, mostly, but also a warning.  Freyd's duties kept enemies away from his guildmates, but multiplied them in turn.  Spycraft wasn't great for improving relationships, yet somehow he'd managed.

"Hey Ciela.  Yeah, Rai and I have seen that book more times than I can count.  Think of it like a port-key, if that means anything to you.  It opens the gates to monkey hell.  Actually, now that I actually think about it, the missing pages probably contain the formula for cloning flying monkey minions.  FLY.M.M.s?  I dunno.  Let's workshop that."

Raidou took the more honest, direct approach.  He'd always been the better straight man in their duo, which was really saying something.  Wind whipped and snatched them from the ground, depositing them roughly in the quest instance before Freyd could conjure another random word.  There were always many floating about the Whisper's noggin, always eeking to get out without a proper context.  It made him seem quirky, to politer folks, or outside batshit crazy.  That unpredictability had its uses.

"Susan! What is this? Third time this week!?"

"Susan?  I thought it was Francine?  Or am I confusing her with the bear in the Scents of the Wild quest?  I'm so bad with mob names, but I never forget an avatar."  Dusting himself off after an exceptionally acrobatic dismount from their tornado-taxi, the Whisper wandered forward only to stall and nearly skip a step, fastidiously resisting the overwhelming urge to facepalm at Raidou's last words.  As the simian swarm closed overhead, Freyd's glance focused on the ground below.  Dozens of shadows broke off from the main horde, diving right at them in waves.  "Think we can fit them all back in the barrel?"

Leaping into the air, he became a shadow among a vanguard of flittering, flapping forms accentuated by monkey hollers, then the telltale sound of fractured and breaking mobs.  Somehow slipping back out from Raidou's shadow to rejoin their formation, only a smirk could be seen beneath the black trademark cowl.

"Nuts.  Missed one.  Guess the rest of you will have to tackle the rest of the flock.  Murder?  I like Murder of Monkeys.  It has a certain ring to it."

"I will definitely make this into a murder," Wulfrin smirked as he drew Icingdeath, its cold mist chilling the very air around it. The already slightly blue tinted blade began to shine an even brighter cerulean light as Wulfrin charged forward. He cut a massive swath through the monkey horde. As he cut through his third target though, it didn't shatter like the others. This one froze into an ice sculpture of a flying monkey trapped forever in its final moments, only to shatter upon collision with the ground.

"I love this blade," Wulfrin said with enthusiasm, pointing at the shards of ice. "It always finds its mark and when it does, it does so in dramatic fashion. I have a feeling this is going to be a cake walk. Also Susan? Francine? I'm pretty sure those are just random NPCs in the Town of Beginnings that y'all are confusing for bosses."

Ciela shook Rai's hand, "It's very nice to meet you, I've heard good things." She followed Rai's instruction and threw it off the cliff. YEET. They walked into the Witch's lair. Ciela laughed as Rai and Freyd came up with names for the witch. "Susan? Francine? Which is it? There's gotta be someone out there who knows what her actual name is."

Before she knew it, monkeys were flying out from every nook and cranny. Freyd dispatched of three of them while Wulfrin took out the straggler. Before she knew it, four flying monkeys had surrounded her. Without skipping a beat, she spun around like a beyblade and managed to hit and stun them all. Call an ambulance, but not for me. "I see why you said time to spank the monkey Rai, how often do y'all fight these guys?" She could only assume it was often due to Rai saying the witch had lost hundreds of times. She was impressed honestly.

OOC: Mobs Reordered, Flying Monkey 1-3 were slain on Wulfrin's Post, meaning that Ciela's are 4-7. Wulfrin's EN fixed from his AOE-I, Ciela's EN fixed from her TECH-F

Lifting his weapon high, the storm above rolls as it responds. Flashes that loomed overhead elude to power jumping between the clouds. <<Forgotten King's Authority>> triggers and sends a singular bolt down and catches on the blade like a lightning rod. "At least two or three times per week." The man quips toward the girl, as electricity jumps down and back the length of his blade. His stance widens, as Monkies are flung to the dust by a rather elegant twirl from the girl. Tucking the blade under his right arm he rockets forward and dumps that bit of steel into the ground with a clap of thunder. The power trapped within discharges, sending bolts bounding across the ground as they fissure and tear through. Electricity detonates out in a ring finding the grounded targets and causing them to seize violently before popping like confetti, sending showers of data airborne. Those fragments glimmer like astral rain before vanishing completely. The final beast rushes in, a last ditch effort to avenge his now deceased companions. It aims for the throat and yet all it finds is the clatter of steel, halted dead upon the Ebon Vanguard.

Raidou cannot help but tilt his head, perplexed at the attempt.

"Really? I could have sworn her name was Susan...."

"How kind Rai," Wulfrin said as he took aim at the remaining flying monkey. "You left one for me. Very thoughtful of you."

Wulfrin leapt into the air with his sword art glowing a vibrant emerald. With one well placed strike, Wulfrin watched as the monkey froze over from the effects if Icingdeath. The sad part was, he wouldn't get the chance to follow it up with anything. The now icy statue of a flying monkey lost all its lift an fell with the full force of gravity. Once it hit the ground, it shattered into a million tiny icy pieces that melted away in the noon day sun.

"Well then," Wulfrin said as he returned Icingdeath to it's scabbard. "Now that the welcoming party has been culled. Shall we pay this witch, whatever her name may be, a proper visit? She practically rolled out the red carpet for us."

Concealing a modestly prideful smile at Wulfrin's praise for his blade, Freyd knew full well the weapon's potency.  The swordsman bore it well as he faced off against their opponents, flaying the one that had gotten by him.  Ciela bore the brunt of the next wave with ease, in her usual, casual style.  Thankful for his cowl, a tiny chuckle still eeked out at her comment about hearing good things.  Few in Aincrad hadn't heard of the Red Wanderer, one way or another.  Sparing his old friend a grim grin, the Whisper darted for the shadows, opposite the main and heavily fortified tower entrance.  Slipping through the darkness, he vanished, only for the rest of them to hear the rub of heavy timbers and grinding tumblers as the portal seemed to unlock itself from within.

"She really needs better security." A spray of fragments still drifting through the air signaled the fate of the witch's final defenders.  "Shall we meet again topside?"

Freyd wandered through the void once more, reaching their quarry's quarters before the rest and finding her holding a buttered bagel, mouth half open and eyes wide with panic at the sight of an intruder.  Dressed in her petunia-print bathrobe and wearing a pair of fluffy bunny slippers, she still sported a severe case of bed head as her freshly brewed morning concoction slipped from her hand, followed by the vessel.  White ceramic shattered loudly upon impact with the slate floor, the mob still too agog to offer any protest before Freyd pressed his charge and sent her flying against the far wall.

"Oh dear," he chuckled, noticing how she'd been knocked right out of her slippers.  "This day might be off to a rough start... uh... what was your name again?  We can't seem to recall."

  • 3 weeks later...

Ciela looked at everyone in amazement. "That's pretty often, I mean I get that she's a boss but still." After the last of the monkeys was dispatched they continued through the castle. Ciela stifled a laugh at the sight of the witch mid-bite on a bagel. Not only that but she was wearing fuzzy bunny slippers, a flower covered comfy looking robe and her hair looked like she shoved a fork in an electrical socket. "Why don't we just give her a name that fits the vibe? Like Karen, or something." Ciela looked over to Freyd for a moment, then snapped back to the witch as her coffee mug shattered into a million tiny pieces onto the ground.

Freyd wasted no time preparing his attack, striking while she was still distracted. Once Freyd finished his attack toward Susan, Francine, whatever she's named, Ciela readied herself to attack. Little did she realize the fuzzy bunny slippers were in her path, she slipped on one and lost her footing for a moment. Ciela managing to catch herself before falling let out and angry sigh. Picking up the slippers and chucking them in the general direction of the witch. "Take that! You should know not to leave your slippers wherever you please! It's impolite!"

They were making exceptionally short work of the small army of monkey mooks. The witch herself would probably fall just as quick, Wulfrin guessed. Their target, a frazzled old lady not even done with her morning routine. Freyd opened up as normal, one massive burst of damage eliminating well over half the boss's hit points in a single strike. Ciela? Yeah she didn't fare to well. As she charged the boss, she slipped on the hastily discarded bunny slippers of Karen. Francine? Susan? Wulfrin was losing track of how many different names this mob was collecting.

"How bout just Witch of the West?" Wulfrin asked the group shaking his head. "I'm going to lose my mind trying to keep track of the boss's nickname at this point."

Wulfrin charged forward, his blade drawn and alight with the emerald light of his Florenthian Strike. In a burst of light witch was sent flying backward, a significant gash cut into her gown from which fracture marks spider webbed outward. Her armor was reduced and only a small handful of points remained in her rapidly diminishing bar. Wulfrin stepped back in line allowing for a clear path to their target for his companions, his familiar swooping in to harry the boss.

"Well Raidou," Wulfrin said with a smile. "Looks like the kill is yours."

Standard Recovery +3 EN, Recovery | 233120, CD: 4 (No Proc)

The witch recoils under the persistent assault and the look in her eyes would convey that she had some trick up her sleeve. Raising her right hand a burning ball of purple and cursed fire, the goal to light the party with one final attempt to purchase her safety. Winding back she'd prepare her spell saying the final incantation. Moments before she can release Raidou blinds into view, and the spell releases point blank. A blinding flash of color would conceal them both from view, and once that clears it would reveal the man still stood. Smoking with half his face charred black, Raidou stares her down in such a gut wrenching show of superiority. "Thanks for the meal." Raidou remarks with a smile as he slides behind her, as if space itself folds. Beneath his right shoulder, and through her abdomen a singular opaque blade protrudes. A sharp snap and it follows with a heavy thud, as Raidou inhales drawing some of that red mist into his mouth.

As he does, his face would reform at such a pace as if it had never occurred at all.

"It almost seems tragic, doesn't it?"  Even with an army of avian-simian-doohickeys outside, this particular quest mob never put up much of a fight.  "Honestly, I'd leave her completely alone if the monkey's didn't periodically spawn out of control and start shitting all over the guild hall lawn and stealing roof ornaments.  And if Rai hasn't managed to duplicate her special brew after all this time, then it probably can't be done."  Rifling through the lair's reams of useless kitchenware and miscellaneous sundries, he arrived at the same conclusion.  Still nothing.  A sideways glance spared for Raidou, the man's aggressive waxing towards the end of the fight causing something unspoken to be exchanged.

"One thing always bothers me about this place, whenever we get to the end of the quest.  Where does that go?"  Pointing at an inactive portal built into the ambient decor, it was easily missed by anyone not looking for it.  Freyd had found it during earlier runs, but never managed to activate it.  "There must be a key around here somewhere that triggers its activation."

"Is that what's been tearing up the roof of both my house and shop?" Wulfrin said in astonishment. "That makes so much sense. I really should have paid this rowdy neighbor a visit sooner. At least this isn't an HOA. I think I would actually rather deal with this over one of those." Wulfrin shuddered at the mere mention of the literal Karen farms. He turned his attention to the room and the portal pointed out by Freyd. He immediately went into loot goblin mode pulling on books, thumbing through journals, and even looking up the chimney in hopes of finding something worth pushing to start the thing up. How long would it take to find an activation switch? Will they have to face a respawned Witch? Who knows. The simple act of searching served as a good time sink while they waited for energy bars to refill.

"Gotta be something around here," Wulfrin said quizzically as he started reading from a journal sprawled at a near by table. "I just hope it wasn't in that book Ciela threw away."

Ciela brushed herself off, not that it made much difference. She had completely missed the goddamned boss. The best she’d done was serve as a distraction while the others got their hits in. Once again, she felt that familiar sting of disappointment, but this time, she refused to let it show. With a steady breath, she rose from her stumble, keeping her composure intact.

When Wulfrin mentioned the book, her jaw clenched. Wulfrin's words had cut her a bit deeper than Ciela would usually admit. The glare she shot him could have pierced right through him. "I threw it. Because Raidou said we didn’t need it. Sweetheart." She forced a tight smile through gritted teeth, unnerving as it was, it was her way of staying calm.

Turning to Raidou, Ciela hoped Freyd was right. She desperately hoped he had brewed that potion enough times that her screw-up wouldn’t matter. Fucking hell.

"Nah.  I wouldn't worry too much about that.  The book is always there as a trigger for the quest, serving as a portal key that brings you to this particular instance.  When the monkeys overpopulate, they just seem to eek out and cause trouble. As much as I think we'd all like to manufacture her potion, and spare everyone this unpleasantness, this is likely the only viable option."  Examining the frame in greater detail, the Whisper muttered something to himself about a certain familiarity.

"This looks like the elvish script they use in Kalanaes, or more specifically the older dialect used in the Vale of Ruins, above."  Sparing a sideways glance to Raidou, the two share an unspoken connection of dots.  This was where Lun'Rael fell, twice.

"Could the witch have been trading with the elves in some way?  They might have benefitted from her alchemical... Shit.   You don't think she might have had a hand in creating the plague that became the Sundered Spire, do you?"  His guildmate was the best player alchemist in the game, as far as he knew.   If anyone could find a potential link, it would be the Red Wanderer.

The script was incredibly unfamiliar to Wulfrin. The way Freyd was talking, he was likely acting off of knowledge from a quest Wulfrin had yet to undertake. Wulfrin did know one thing, a witch possibly skewing an ongoing conflict to one side or the other was not likely to be a good thing. Not to mention that it was likely the side of the less than reputable people. This was not an outcome Wulfrin was wanting to see come to fruition.

"Sorry but you're losing me on that one," Wulfrin shrugged as he looked over the portal frame. "I'll just have to add that of my list of potential quests to go on once I'm through grinding for the raid."

Wulfrin turned his attention back to the shelves of books that lined one of the walls. He was carefully thumbing over each of the books in a desperate search to find any information on the subject that may help them. There were tomes on almost every other language except this elvish script before them. Even less so info on portals.

"Hey odd question," Wulfrin said with a genuine curiosity. "What if that portal frame is the entrance to a dungeon?"
