After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps. After being released from active duty, he decided to remain in Japan and naturalized, becoming a full Japanese citizen. In time, he eventually joined the company that developed SAO, but was unrelated to the development of SAO. Due to his connection to the company, he gained a NerveGear rig and a copy of SAO. Once inside SAO, he quickly realized that he didn’t like how using sword arts felt, disliking the feeling of being stuck in an attack pattern. Due to this, he decided to use his real world skill instead, relying on sword arts at the bare minimum. Due to this decision, he ended up having to go solo, grinding away on each level until the enemies there were too easy to defeat. For the most part, the skills he relied on were the skills he gained from his time in the Marine Corps, especially the skills from the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, or MCMAP. He also made use of his scouting and tracking skills. Virtues: Adaptable Due to his time in the Marine Corps, he has become extremely skilled at adapting to whatever situation he finds himself in. The Marines follow the unofficial motto Semper Gumbi, or Always Flexible, as it translates from Latin. In following this motto, Jeremiah keeps his head on a swivel, and ready to react accordingly to his situation. Freethinking Following the training he received in the Corps, Jeremiah has gained the ability to take in all the information about a situation and come to a decision unbiased by any outside view points. Having been a small unit leader, he had to be able to make decisions for his squad at the drop of a hat, decisions that affected the lives of his men. As such, he kept the goal of his mission in mind, added the details of the situation, and came up with the best course of action that allowed him to bring his men home alive. Good-natured Despite the trauma he experienced during his time in the Corps, Jeremiah has always remained kind, friendly, and patient with the people that he meets. This comes from his upbringing, as his father always said: “A true gentleman is always chivalrous.” Adapting this to modern standards enabled Jeremiah to remain true to his father’s teachings. Venturesome Part of the reason that Jeremiah joined the Corps in the first place was to go on an adventure, as wonderlust and the unknown called to him. Applying these desires to his actions in the Corps came quite easily to him, since he usually found himself on one battlefield or another. This leads him to dive into sticky situations in order to save his men on multiple occasions throughout the eight years of his enlistment. Flaws: Calculating Despite being good-natured, Jeremiah tends to be scheming and ruthless at times. He has found that in order to get his men home in one piece, he had to scheme quite a bit. There were also times he had to be extremely ruthless in order to save his men. Opportunistic Taking advantage of whatever opportunities come his way has also been second nature to Jeremiah. Sometimes this comes at inopportune times, and caused trouble for the men under him at times. He also has a nasty habit of being extremely ruthless when it comes to taking advantage of these opportunities. Petty Jeremiah has gotten quite adept at malicious compliance and sarcasm. Having to deal with the bs orders of his superiors in the Corps, he quickly became proficient in maliciously compliant to the bs orders that he received. He’s also inherited his mother’s skills in sarcasm. Tactless Outside of established chains of command, Jeremiah has little regard for what people demand when it comes to respect. Though he remains kind and friendly, if someone starts demanding a certain form of respect, he’ll refuse to give them that demanded form of respect. He also has a tendency to blurt out things that would otherwise be best kept quite.
